Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 12:10, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Superb photograph which not only brings out the peculiar quality of that bridge but shows us what Bobbio is like and its topographical context. Beautiful composition. Exquisite tonal values. Congratulations, and thanks for uploading it! —Ian Spackman 08:26, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. You say this is own work, but list author as one Noel Walley on en.wp, who apparently doesn't exist. Could you please clarify where the photo is from please? Thanks. Oh, and ditto for Image:Porthmadog6293229.JPG-mattbuck (Talk) 11:33, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, never mind about the original author, I found that it was just linked wrong, but it would help if you could tell me if they were transwikied or what. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:51, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
NoelWalley just got back to me. Please do not claim others' images as your own. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:56, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This wasn't my intention indeed. Just a little error with transwiki in my earlier times. I copied the information from en without changing. --Herbert Ortner (talk) 21:29, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Herbert,

CPPbHC|AT

[edit]

Also besser delete statt edit.

-- Herby (Vienna) (talk) 19:38, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

-- Herby (Vienna) (talk) 21:14, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Da du offenbar teilweise ziemlich massenhaft umkategorisierst (noch einmal danke für deine viele Mühe!): Kennst du Cat-a-lot? Vielleicht kann das deine Arbeit etwas effizienter machen. darkweasel94 Diskussion/talk/diskuto 11:49, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Gruß --Eweht (talk) 05:53, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Eweht! -- Herby (Vienna) (talk) 20:00, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

--Manuela (talk) 19:37, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Picture of the Year 2013 Results

[edit]
The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Herbert Ortner,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.

Wiener Straßenbahn: Streckenkategorien

[edit]

Hallo!

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the name File:475 111 by Hugh Llewelyn 05.jpg. A file by this name already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you. For more information, please see Commons:Overwriting files.

I answer in english: For some odd reson this file was overwritten just the next minute after my first upload. As you can see it was myself who uploaded it in the first place. Must have been some hiccup of flickr2commons since I transfered the whole album from Flickr. Shouldn't it usually refuse to overwrite a file already available on Commons? -- Herby (Vienna) (talk) 16:59, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Categories in English, articles in native language

[edit]

Hallo Herbert,

Categories are normally in English but articles can be in native language. Gryffindor (talk) 20:22, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
I'm absolutely not convinced! This is not a descriptive category name but an established company name. Just take a look into the upper Category:Defunct rail transport companies of Austria and it's upper category – everything in original language! There's a reason why for example there is a Category:Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Est but no "Eastern railway company"‎ and many others. In printed English literature kkStB is the most common term and Imperial Royal State Railways a very rare occurrence there. I hope nobody considers renaming Category:Österreichische Bundesbahnen to something like Austrian federal railways. Was there a renaming discussion beforehand? I strongly recommend to name this category back to the established German name. -- Herby (Vienna) (talk) 15:31, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:JZ class 32 Mallet locomotive in Split ca 1952.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

John Swain

[edit]

Thanks for identifying the author in those crane engravings. [1] [2]

Can I ask, how did you find the author? It's not a name I recognise and although the cranes have an (incomprehensible) signature, the station drawing doesn't. Is he any connection to Joseph Swain? Andy Dingley (talk) 17:08, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I found a few drawings I could use for a project of mine on Flickr and checked Category: John Swain here. There were some of his drawings only in the Engineer's category. Signatures are tiny but readable (kind of) and there's a signature SWAIN ENG (probably for Swain engraver) on the track plan. John had a son also named John who ran the business after his death. [3] This article may be a good start for an entry John Swain (engraver): [4] But I can't find a connection with Joseph who had only one son named Joseph too. Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
