This image is mis-labeled. It is not "Brittany Women" by Émile Friant, but "Arrivée du pardon de sainte Anne à Concarneau" by Alfred Guillou (his signature is clear in the lower right-hand corner). It is in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay. Innisart (talk) 02:22, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

This file was tagged by Ytoyoda as Copyvio for the following reason: The Flickr account is just a guy who photographs other people's photographs. This particular one is an iconic photo shot by Walter Ioos: http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0808/iooss-bp.html Morning Sunshine (talk) 11:30, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

COM:DW of a sculpture (and {{Personality rights}} does not apply). /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 09:39, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- The {{personality rights}} are there because I uploaded pictures of this event in a batch of 200+ images, most of which included people. They themselves have published a very nice picture of the trophy under CC-BY-SA. --Vera (talk) 23:23, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- These images are pictures of a bronze sculpture, which although used as an award, still could/should be considered a work of art. It seems to me extra permission of the artist is required. Now you are right about that there is a very nice picture on flickr, but that doesn't give you the permission for your pictures. -- Mdd (talk) 02:46, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
- The copyright holder of the statue is then perhaps willing to grant a similar permission for these photos through OTRS. --AFBorchert (talk) 07:14, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
- We can only assume the copyright holder of the sculpture has granted permission for the publication of that Flickr picture under CC-BY-SA. There is no prove of that. It is only my experience that with such a prestigious prize, sculptures are made by artists with some name. I think we should track down the artist, and let the artist decide. I have given this a try myself looking for that artist online, but was unsuccessful. I guess contacting the TEDx Amsterdam organization should be an option here, if Vera wants to keep these images here. -- Mdd (talk) 23:01, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, yes I will try and contact the TEDxAmsterdam organisation --Vera (talk) 23:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Got word back from the organisation. The guy responsible for the award had re-purposed an award he had gotten himself over 10 years ago for the TEDxAmsterdam award, adding a layer of gold foil and the logo to it (oh, how Dutch). So now we have multiple layers of derivative work. We've got the the original creator of the statue, which might be hard to track down now, and the TEDxAmsterdam guy. Is it enough to let him agree with publication? --Vera (talk) 12:42, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- ROTFL. But he does not own the copyright. The images should be deleted. But thank you very much for the story. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 19:26, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

- @Vera, if that guy is willing to cooperate, you could ask him where he got the award and you can further investigate. It's not just a funny story. It is also a good example of recycling, which is a hot item in art nowadays. I agree with Pieter, so far, that we should stay on the save side. If we cannot find the artist, or cannot get his permission these images should be removed. -- Mdd (talk) 22:42, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Still haven't heard back. I guess it's a bit embarrassing to ask the people you got an award from who made it because you gave it away again. I suppose this means my pictures will have to be deleted in the protection of the copyright of the unknown author. --Vera (talk) 15:57, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

No evidence that this is a Swedish photograph or that it is free in the United States. Author is unknown (the image may be used by the Nobel foundation, that doesn't make them the author). Image date unsourced (1930 assertion only based on Nobel date which is not rationally related to the image). We can't host an image lacking vital information on its copyright. - Comments
- (i) The Elsevier reprint can be downloaded at the nevis.columbia.edu page (search for "Nobel Lectures, Physics 1922-1941 site:nevis.columbia.edu"), and surely it does not contain laureate photos - they are only printed in Les Prix Nobel, the note on the nobel.org site refers to the text only. I haven't seen yet any hardcopy reprints of nobel bios with photos, though there are many text reprints.
- (ii) It does not matter for Swedish copyright who and where took the photo; it should be first published in Sweden. AIP attributes this image to A. Bortzells Tryckeri which is a Swedish printing company in Stockholm (Tryckeri = Printing house in Swedish), indirectly supporting the PD-Sweden claim. AIP also puts a copyright mark at the page bottom, but this is a routine blanket protection of the overal site content - many dozens of other sites host this image and do the same, though they obviously copied the image from nobel.org.
- (iii) The photo is taken before 1930s (cf. this)
- No website identifies the image author/date; there is some circumstantial evidence it was printed in Sweden, long, long ago (apparently A. Bortzells was only active in the early 1900s), and there is no evidence anyone else published it untill the advent of the internet. - It is not that circumstantial: AIP Visual Archives is a serious image library, paying much attention to copyright and authors (nearly all their images are credited, often to non-trivial sources); its crediting the image to Bortzells Tryckeri does mean it was published in Sweden, and there is little doubt it was published before 1969, in Le Prix Nobel. Apart from the fact that it's hard to tell whether this was really published in 1965 (note that 1965 photographs are PD in Finland, while 1966 are not), there are also quality issues that make it questionable whether this image is useful in depicting Urho Kekkonen in an educational purpose. Both versions of the image clearly have parts of the suit drawn on top of an existing image, with a painted single-colour background. We have a fair number of actual photographs that can be used to illustrate pages about Kekkonen. Jafeluv (talk) 14:51, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

- Hmm, good point. I can't really prove the date right or wrong without browsing through every issue of Helsingin Sanomat from 1965. The uploader does have a history of copyright violations, but afaik not of outright falsifications, so I may have been a little too quick to doubt the license. The unlikely-to-be-useful-for-an-educational-purpose part still applies, though. Jafeluv (talk) 00:33, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- I'm far from a friend of the uploader, I am well aware of his history. But I don't see a reason to doubt the age, at this stage anyways. It's not in use however, so that is something to discuss. Fry1989 eh? 00:53, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Keep These buildings are part of UNESCO heritage, they have a value all around the world so, beyond the copyright, there is a real need for wikipedia to keep a picture of these buildings. It says that the photographer died at least 70 years ago yet he is unknown. Has a copyright notice on the source web site. If unpublished, the British copyright expires on 1 January 19402040 or, if published before that date, 70 years after publication. Stefan4 (talk) 22:20, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- We know that the photo was produced in 1891. Assuming it was published at that time (it is regularly featured in various publications) if we add 70 years the copyright expires in 1961. This leaves considerable margin for error if it was published a bit later. Dormskirk (talk) 18:11, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

It pretty clearly says district court which makes it a federal court, and it is also on the federal court website as you posted. I am confused how you could think this is from a state court. Thus, it is clearly within the public domain for the reasons stated on the file (Fed. U.S. Gov).Boaltie (talk) 17:40, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
