First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:TendringAgroShow.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hi,
I put better description. When you upload from a other Wiki, you have to put all mentions of original upload with same license and history of file. it exists a tool to assist transfert CommonsHelper (V2.0) which transfert all informations of file. Oxam Hartog 21:37, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Where on Flickr did you find this image? Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs|Flickr review status nom) 18:10, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The same goes for Image:Roast Guinea Pig.jpg. We need a proper source for images, or they will be deleted. --Ranveig 11:33, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:ChenFake.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Nice to see you around here! --Boricuæddie 23:49, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I know the feeling (I've failed RfA twice) :-( But, don't worry; the opposers are just trying to make sure that Wikipedia's admins are only of the best quality. Just try to stay calm at all times, so you can demonstrate to the Community that you are perfectly capable of remaining civil, and request adminship again when you feel you're ready. I am sure that, someday, you'll be a great asset to the Community as a sysop. Meanwhile, feel free to keep uploading images here :-) Happy uploading! --Boricuæddie 00:32, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Start small, close obvious deletion discussions. Get bolder with experience. Pretty soon Commons will have ten thousand images! (giggles, flees) ;)

Recent flickr uploads

[edit]

Hi Steven! Thanks for uploading the great photos of produce and farm markets. One small request...when uploading photos from flickr, will you please choose the highest resolution image available? You can do so by clicking on the all sizes button that appears just above the flickr photo, then clicking on the highest file size listed...then uploading to Commons! I've already gone ahead and uploaded the highest res files when I was doing flickr review, so don't worry about the uploads till now. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 00:13, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven. I wonder if you have contact details for Matt, since you uploaded his "chicken feeding" photo?
I used it in my video Il est bel et bon (duly credited)
Il est bel et bon
If you can contact him, please let him know about it :-)
(or maybe you can send me his email address? Mine is dwsolo@gmail.com [that's the one I use on public fora anyway!]) Thanks
Kind regards

This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Cfkyoung.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Cfkyoung.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

After discussion in bureaucrats mailing list I closed you nomination as unsuccessful.

I think will be good idea if you'll increase activity in areas which may be noticed by other (new files patrolling, deletion requests, help desk, etc.). Wiki-gnomes help needed there too! Then after couple of months you could re-apply again.

About OTRS

[edit]

Hello Steven, how are you. I need your help in checking a permission mail in the otrs system if you could. The file is EarthAngels.jpg I mailed the owner explaining him everything about our privacy policies and about the otrs system and he sent a mail with the template and all the details straight to the address provided and also a copy to me. The only thing wrong is that the url is a facebook account album and its not opened to the public but for his friends. He is called Christian Carrasco, one of the members of a spanish doo wop band called Earth Angels. Earth angels But im not sure if you have a facebook account and if you will be able to check. Also, the url of the album, which is the one included in the permission template is not the same of the url of the band, but you'll be able to check by the pics they have in their main page which is wide opened to the public. I need to know if this is ok because theres more pics of the band i'd like to upload as they come out with the greatests artist of the american doo wop apart from pics from pittsburgh and the Hilton hotel that could fit in some articles. Excuse my english as i am spanish. Thank you very much indeed for your help. rafax (talk) 23:27, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
File:Pilobolus dance.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid. Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Steven Walling, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Hello, Steven Walling!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

It's a cartoon drawn by some German

[edit]

Hi Steven,

I am not a native English speaker, but when I read this sentence of yours regarding the manga nomination of User:Niabot, it seems (in my perception) as a disrespectful sentence, which is not needed addressing a person and not what the nomination is about, the image. Especially the use of the word some in front of German. The user has spend a great deal of time preparing a nomination. We do not have very many illustrators being prepared to license their creations under a Commons compatible license. Whether you like it or not is one thing, but I think it is clear that it is a person with a significant amount of skill, who has made the creation, and not some German. Assuming my understanding of the tone is right, and if it was me, I would consider apologizing to the user.

Best wishes from Denmark,

--Slaunger (talk) 21:50, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven,
Thanks for your swift reply. Niabots reply seems to indicate to me that this is not quite how he perceives the situation though. We have recently had a lot of unpleasant conflicts on FPC due to multilingual and -cultural miscommunication, and IMO there is a good point in keeping a good tone even when a comment by another user is found to be "idiotic".
I accept if you do not think an apology is relevant. However, you might what to clarify the intention behind that comment though, as it appears that several editors has perceived it differently, that what appears to have been your intention.
Best wishes --Slaunger (talk) 22:07, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see you already have. Case closed and thanks. --Slaunger (talk) 22:09, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The sexual content poll

[edit]

I understand you are a staff member, so you are presumably familiar with Wikicommons policy, but this:

"a softer, early-stage policy is better than none at all. "

appears as if you are unaware that current policy is already in place. See COM:CENSORSHIP, COM:PS#Must_be_realistically_useful_for_an_educational_purpose, and COM:PORN. Also, the concern is not that this policy is too soft, but that it is to strict by extending existing policy to make all sexual content media subject to a "speedy deletion" without discussion if any admin determines they have a questionable legality(despite said admin not being a lawyer) or questionable relevance(again determined by a single admin).
Areas that deal with complicated issues of legality and scope need to be handled on a case by case basis, and already as it is obvious examples of illegal content/vandalism are already speed deleted. If you were already aware of existing policy then please feel free to disregard this post. --AerobicFox (talk) 04:34, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm of the personal opinion that existing policy Commons has is not comprehensive or detailed enough to handle what is obviously a special situation, based on how controversial the issue has been in practice. Also, I wasn't saying that the currently proposed policy is soft, I was saying that it would be fine to edit it to be softer if that would garner more support. Steven Walling 03:47, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I apologize for the redundant information then. ^_^ --AerobicFox (talk) 19:56, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Best regards --Neozoon (talk) 23:21, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I don’t want to add more fuel to the already-too-hot debate around the POTD, but I really do not see a single use of the file on other projects except its use by virtue of being a Commons POTD (i.e. user pages, POTD templates and Main Pages). Cf. also “An otherwise non-educational file does not acquire educational purpose solely because it is in use on a user page”. I guess reopening would not be a good idea, the topic is just too hot and even though I would be glad to have the file removed (because it is out of scope, not because of any nudity), I just can’t imagine that happening now. So… just saying.

Ad “it was mirrored on the main pages of a couple Wikipedias” – sure, you misunderstood my point. It was being displayed on the main pages of a couple Wikipedias because and only because it was the current picture of the day on Commons. Many Wikipedias leave the choice of their Main Page picture to Commons, showing the Commons’ POTD (cf. todays POTD), no editorial discretion there, nobody has chosen the picture to be shown on those Wikipedias, it was done automatically (see e.g. es:Plantilla:IDDC/Imagen). --Mormegil (talk) 10:23, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What license should I use?

[edit]

Dear Steven Walling, I would like to upload media from The Institute for Solar Physics but I don't know which license to use. I was looking for an administrator to give me some advice and I was hoping you could help me. Their media usage policy is here. I have also contacted someone from the website and they have told me via email that they have no problem with commercial use as long as proper credit is given. As far as I can tell it should be fine to upload some of their content to the commons but I don't know which license to use. What would you do if you wanted to upload some of their content. If you have any advice I would be really grateful. Thanks, Originalwana (talk) 10:03, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Speedy Deletion - Questionable Tag and Free Use claim

[edit]

Candidate for speedy deletion - This Molodava stamp is a non-free derivative work. The free use tag associated with it is questionable per at least 3 editors - no one is able to validate free use claims - all limited to assumptions. Image in question is ::File:Stamp_of_Moldova_012.jpg Also see http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=126275 - this appears to be the original stamp from which the Moldova stamp originated. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Acer_Chromebook.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

De-adminship

[edit]

Hi Steven! This is just to inform you that earlier today, you had your adminship privileges revoked on Meta by a Wikimedia steward; after that, I restored the rollbacker rights you have held previously on this wiki. Thank you for you service as an administrator, and I hope you will stay active on Commons as a regular contributor. Of course, please do feel free to re-apply for adminship when you get more active :-) Thank you! odder (talk) 14:04, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Chromebook launch.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
