Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:22, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Supa Strikas
[edit]Hello TFCForever! Thank you for all your help - the categorisation of the images helps immensely. Although I am still quite new to the wikiverse, every day I appreciate the network of administrators and contributors more and more, and I find it amazing how well self-regulation works! I will make sure that all future image uploads go through the Supa Strika category. Thanks again! 196.31.70.10 11:14, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'm glad I could help, and even more glad that you are enjoying your experience here. Thanks for all of your hard work uploading the images and take care! TFCforever (talk) 03:42, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
If you want to redefine the scope, why leave the old description and add no new categories? Shouldn't the moved images be placed in a new category for the club? Richard001 (talk) 21:09, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry about that: I left it half-done about an hour ago, but now I've finished it. The old description has been removed and the new images have been placed in a new category, which is at Category:Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. I'm sorry about the confusion that I've caused by my general lack of speed on this issue. Thanks for the heads up, and take care. TFCforever (talk) 21:22, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

SVG conversion made per your request, translation still needed
[edit]See Commons:Graphic_Lab/Illustration_workshop#Integration. I made an SVG conversion, but you need to supply a translation. Thanks. -Andrew c (talk) 14:04, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry about the delay, but here's the translation into English...
Autokäufer = Car (automobile) buyers
Garagisten = Garage owners
Autoimporteure = Car (automobile) importers
Autohersteller = Car (automobile) manufacturers
Zulieferer = Suppliers
Rohstoffproduzenten = Commodity (primary) producers
Vertika = Vertical
Horizonta = Horizontal
Vorwarts = Forwards
Ruckwarts = Backwards
Also, I am not skilled enough with a program like Inkscape to insert the English words into the image. I am willing to learn, but I also don't want to waste the time of anyone here at the graphics lab. Thanks so much for all your work!
TFCforever (talk) 14:33, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- You can do it with a text editor (such as notepad). The XML coding may be a bit overwhelming when you first look at it, but if you do a simple find and replace for the German word for English, you can tackle it that way. Just FYI. I'm more than glad to make the English version now. -Andrew c (talk) 16:05, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, just give it a shot. If you want to create a Spanish language version, or any other language. Just try it out. Open it in Notepad (or an equivalent). And it shouldn't be that hard to scroll down and locate the section that has "Garage owners" "Car importers" etc, and just make a one for one replacement, then save it and upload it under a new file name. If you run into any problems or have other questions, I'd be glad to help (assuming this is something you'd like to try one day. It's ok if you don't). That said, I left out the parenthetical parts of your translation due to space limitations. If you feel like any of the phrases could be reworded, or need the parentheticals, I'd be more than happy to make those changes (or again, you can try it yourself, if you are up to it!) Thanks for working on the translations. -Andrew c (talk) 01:22, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Adding Files like File:Img-071129152243-0001.png to Cat:Files with errors is pretty useless: The respective PNG files don't have any actual errors; it's a temporary limit of the mediawiki renderer for resource reasons & adding Category:Files with errors doesn't really justify the removal of Uncategorized--DieBuche (talk) 10:21, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry it took so long for me to reply; You're right, maybe we should categorize them; I'll create a sub-cat of Broken files, Category:PNG files affected by MediaWiki restrictions--DieBuche (talk) 09:10, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Category changes
[edit]I see you've made a great many category changes using HotCat. I suggest you take a look at AWB, which makes repetitive changes to items in categories and other lists much faster than HotCat. Its speed comes primarily from the fact that it loads each page only once and then can search, search and replace, or many other things. When you're done with a page and hit SAVE, the next page in the list loads immediately.
It requires permission, but, given your experience, I'd be happy to put you on the list if you'd like to try it.
I thought about asking you to think about putting in an RfA. We badly need help and anyone who can do 100,000 Commons edits and have only 25 items on his or her talk pages has got to be both competent and mellow. I note, though, that you've walked a very narrow path here, with virtually all of your edits on Files and Cats. If you ever get the urge to spread out a little, drop me a note. Jim . . . . FC or F.C.
[edit]Hello TFCforever. Can you please stop moving Players of Team FC to players of Team F.C., as you have done with Category:Players of Chelsea F.C. as you can see from Category:Association football players by team in England, the convention is to leave out the full stops with these categories. Personally I don't mind whether we use FC or F.C. but I don't think we should use a mixture as this leads to confusion and difficulty when creating player categories. Thanks --Kafuffle (talk) 15:03, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I noticed that there were a couple files and categories in a redirected category and I was trying to help the bots out a bit. I think that this category may be the bigger problem: it is being redirected to the category with full stops. To solve the problem, I think you'll need to reverse the current situation and redirect "Players of Chelsea F.C." to "Players of Chelsea FC" (if you have consensus to do so, of course). Thanks for stopping to chat and take care! TFCforever (talk) 19:22, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
