Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--EugeneZelenko 18:16, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

An administrator User:Nilfanion has very promptly deleted these covers. William Avery 21:09, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
I have read your note now. This is highly unusual and needs a clear note on all those images. 99.9% of covers uploaded are copyvios, no matter what licences the uploaders claim. William Avery 21:19, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
All I can see is that GFDL is claimed on the nl image page; just because it is claimed on a different project does not mean that that license is valid - where does it say that the cd cover was freely licensed? I tried following the link to the forum mentioned on the nl image but all that gives is a 404 error. If you can give evidence that the GFDL is correct I will undelete.--Nilfanion 21:38, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Commons does have undeletion (finally it only got implemented for images a couple weeks back). Mind you is it really needed, I'd have thought it would be easier to go back to the original images on nl. However, if you would rather upload from commons I'll undelete for you. As an aside with these images, you would need to provide a direct link to the source of the image and the permission; if the dutch image was deleted as now on Commons, how can the info be verified easily?--Nilfanion 21:55, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Having reviewed this a bit I suspect you might well be lucky and find the release agreement. If you do so, if you forward it to me I'll be happy to undelete the images. However, as they are not currently permissible I have deleted them all. Cheers.--Nilfanion 23:17, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Deletion of Image:SDekker.jpg
Adnergje 08:56, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

re: Wikinews
[edit]Hi Steven,
Sounds like a cool project. :) How often are you planning to update the template? Every day, every week?
I don't think announcing the project on the VP is likely to yield many ongoing results. I will mention it on the admin board for those doing new images patrol.
I wonder if using CatScan in some way won't be useful...hmm...
--pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:59, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hi,
- We could put something in the sitenotice but it seems a bit off-target to me. It will show to everyone when you're only really trying to target admins/new images patrol people, correct? So it's a little bit "spam" like... how long do you want such an announcement for?
- As for CatScan, you can choose to see the most recent edits to items in the category, so you could find items recently added to the category (and presumably recently uploaded) - "Self-published work" means you're only seeing "Self-made" work. It might be helpful, or not. I dunno.
- Anyway after some thought, I have to say it is likely that if Wikinews wants to keep this alive, it will have to be Wikinewsies who do the bulk of the work (or perhaps Commons starts publishing it on the main page too and that will motivate people :)). But you can post on the admin's noticeboard right? You don't need me to do that... COM:AN. cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 15:04, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Dag Steven. Hey Steven,
This is a cool image, nice work.
However please keep in mind for the future, that you should never use just the CC "some rights reserved" logo to indicate a specific CC license. Either use the little icons that indicate specific license components (little person for "BY", circular arrow for "SA"), or specifically write the license by name ("CC-BY-xx" or "CC-BY-SA-xx" where xx is the number version). thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:51, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- I like the new logo a lot.
- As for voting, I would prefer to see more participation from Wikinewsies first. Also, I don't like the requirement to register an account. :P
- BTW, if you do this again in the future I think it would be considerate not to do it at the same time as Commons. Also, is it Wikinews or only English Wikinews competition? I didn't notice any input from other Wikinews language editions.
- cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:59, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Sint-Janshuismolen Brugge

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 02:34, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Regions and language areas of Belgium
[edit]Hi,
unfortunately, you made a mistake in the Map of belgian regions [1]. It looks like there is a bilingual German/French area in the east of Belgium. This is wrong. There is a French language area, making up most of the region of Wallonie and a German language area, the east of Wallonie. This latter one therefore must be in blue color, not striped. [edit]Hi Stevenfruitsmaak, your map is nice but misleading: the text below says "blue = German speaking", but the (monolingual!) German speaking area in the map is hashed blue/red. Maybe you had in mind that red may depict both the french language region and the wallon region - but this cannot be depicted like this. There should be 4 colors: yellow (=Region Vlaanderen = monlingual dutch+french), orange (=Region Brussels, bilingual), red (=french-speaking part of Wallonia), blue (=german speaking part of wallonia). Then also the colorful table in [2] can be simplified: the table cell "german speaking" needn't be splitted! 95.113.220.219 10:07, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
File:Performing shoulder arthroscopy.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Thanks for uploading File:Pontocerebellar hypoplasia MRI images 1750-1172-6-50-1-l.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Pontocerebellar hypoplasia MRI images 1750-1172-6-50-1-l.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Circadian rhythm labeled.jpg
[edit]I'd like to thank you for your lovely image.
However, 400 × 267 pixels is a bit small for my purposes (full-page print for personal reference) and there isn't a larger version available on the item page.
- Could you add a larger version of this image? If possible, one approximately 3 times the size (cropped to page proportions) would be ideal.
Also: Are you aware that Wikipedia's article on the Suprachiasmic Nucleus has no other diagram clearly showing its location in the brain?
- You may want to adapt your source image, removing the circadian info, to provide a clear diagram for the SCN article.
Thank you for all your hard work. --SoSaysSunny (talk) 08:37, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Fordyce.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Fordyce.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
