Ignore all rules
I'm surprised you support the existence of such an essay. It would cause havoc at Wikivoyage, and in fact similar sentiments that used to be part of Wikivoyage policy did cause havoc until we finally got rid of them and blocked R.Frank et al. So why is it good for it to be here? I'm just shocked anything with that title was ever here, let alone still is here, having been deleted and apparently recreated without an undeletion request. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:24, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Ikan Kekek: I should start out by saying that the former global policy (it was one before m:Special:Diff/23831449) will still exist even if/when this essay is (re)deleted, but because that's way simpler to analyze: "[i]f a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining a project, ignore it". A disclaimer that I'll also be using "IAR" to denote "ignore all rules" to save some keystrokes.
- A few things to note here:
- "rule" exclusively refers to Wikimedia policies – it does not include anything in the Terms of use or any other legal implications.
- "improving or maintaining" means that the action should be a net positive to the project; general consensus should agree that whatever rule was broken was for the benefit of the project.
- Regarding Andre Carrotflower's use of this rule: it boils down to "improving or maintaining" – general consensus, as concluded on COM:ANU#User:Andre Carrotflower, was that those deletions were not net positives.
- Likewise with Frank and their socks, their actions were not net positives and consensus disagreed with their actions, therefore, misusing IAR (I wasn't active back then, but I believe they went against policy and did their own thing similar to what Veillg1 did?).
- To give an example of how IAR could be used in an appropriate way: voy:Presidents of the United States requires a discussion before any copyedit – there's a good reason behind this, but ignoring the rules to fix typos or adjust time formatting, is how this is supposed to be used. --SHB2000 (talk) 04:08, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- Frank et al. violated rules for years before finally being blocked, because the original view of Wikivoyage was that endless discussion was the right approach toward people who refused to follow consensus. Therefore, we deleted all language suggesting that it was OK to deviate from consensus on Wikivoyage. Making minor edits to that article is not a violation of a rule. Also, if there's a consensus that an action was positive, that is a consensus, which is the Wiki way. The danger is the license to take unilateral actions. But I don't feel like trying to argue more. The problem was that bullheadedly insisting on their own way and arguing about it at length created a hostile work environment. I actually think the contents of IAR are OK now, but it should be renamed to something that does not put the idea of ignoring all rules into anyone's head. "Rules are not etched in stone" might be OK, but the more I think about it, "Be flexible" might be best. FPC closure
Hi there. Just saw the confirmed results at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Madrid - Edificio Grassy (Gran Vía_1) - north facade - relief over entrance.jpg and I don't think they're right. I opposed the promotion, as you did, but I think it had enough votes to pass. It seems that PalauanLibertarian (talk · contribs) changed their vote from "Oppose" to "Weak support" after the filename was changed, but forgot to strike out the old vote. Look, I don't hold a grudge against you, but I do have a problem with you. Let's resolve this right now. Languages of Africa image

Hi SHB2000,
I'm Kontributor 2K, we met recently at the RFR page,
I'm contacting you because I have a question related to my activity: sometimes, wanting to categorize files, I realize that some of them appear twice in the category pages, this beacause a redirect was categorized after a file was renamed.
I found this today, for an example, this redirect had been categorized, which I canceled, but should I remove the categories in redirects or let them as is ?

- Well, I'll take care of it then, although this has no serious impact, eventually, and that the consequences are only visual, and not serious, at least as long as the category is not overloaded.
- Aside from that, do you think you'd have some time to process the pending rename requests of the three CoA SVG files (Adhémar, Warsberg, Dupuy) in R4 ? (There's no need to correct the links, I have them backed-up, if any, and can process myself later)
- That would allow progress on the subject

Without Commons Delinker
Hello SHB2000! As you are senior to me regarding file moving experience, I want to ask you something. Is there any way to stop my automatic edit of request to the Commons Delinker for global renaming of already used files (that i recently renamed)? Isn't it also possible for me to move them all by my user account (which is automatically done during the moving process)? Then, why additionally requesting Commons Delinker? - Hi, Haoreima, from what I can tell, there isn't a way to stop CommonsDelinker from replacing files – I'm not exactly sure what algorithm it uses, but as a general rule of thumb, if a file is used on Wikidata or is used on at least 10 or so wikis, CommonsDelinker will replace the file. I usually just let the bot do its job, so I'm not exactly sure how to stop CommonsDelinker from moving the files. --SHB2000 (talk) 21:22, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks. I didn't see or vote of the regions map of Finnish Lapland above. However, looking at it while waiting for your reply, it seems that Finland has Municipalities and not Regions. Your regions do not match the Municipalities.
I've had a look at the two Australian maps and I pointed out factual errors (you corrected one). It is dangerous to create maps unless you add a disclaimer that they are not intended to be accurate.
