Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:06, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze
[edit]Hallo RaveDog,

Mass deletion of your uploads
[edit]If you don't like the way the files sound; you can always create a new version and re-upload the file instead. All those files are in use and removing them would damage several projects. Cheers, Ruthven (msg) 19:06, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Fernmeldeturm Bitburg 2022-02-05.jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Things named after
How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with C2 if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or C1 if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Landkreis Heilbronn in the 20st century. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 04:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Kategorie-Editions-Tipps
[edit]https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Structures_in_Landkreis_T%C3%BCbingen_by_function u. a. Such-Umschaltung nach Kategorien
Hi, Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function ist mE etwas konfus. Erstens ist da eine infinite Kategorienschleife: Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function beinhaltet Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function beinhaltet Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function ...
Richtig wäre mE Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function gehört zu Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Category:Doors in Baden-Württemberg by building function (eig. Category:Doors in Baden-Württemberg by building function by district).
Gruß -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 12:28, 7 April 2024 (UTC)
Alles abgeleitet vom Main-Tauber-Kreis.

This is probably OK, but it seems a little odd to me to have a street in Seattle named after Austin A. Bell classified the same as a "Glockengasse" or "Calle Campana". Sort of as if we threw Engelsgarten in Wuppertal in with something about angels. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
MHM (talk) 15:24, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
Grenzverschiebungen in BaWü
