Categorization of griffins in heraldry
[edit]Hi,
Recently, I removed the "griffins in heraldry" category on the File:Coat of Arms of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists.svg. And you reverted it.
Why I removed this category? Because, the griffin is a supporter and the specific category "griffins in supporters" is already set. Moreover, "griffins in supporters" is a sub category of "griffins in heraldry".
Thus, it is recommended in Commons to use the most precise category. And, in this case, "griffins in supporters" is more precise than "griffins in heraldry".
Best regards. Jpgibert (talk) 20:06, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
- Understood, appreciate the explanation :) ProfAuthor (talk) 22:37, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Coat of Arms of Borough of Halton
[edit]Hi @ProfAuthor, I wonder if I could ask for your help please. I've had a go at creating an SVG of the coat of arms for the Borough of Halton but frankly it's a mess. There are just too many unusual elements in it for my skill set.
https://www.heraldry-wiki.com/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=Halton_(England)
I wonder if—when you have a moment and if you would like to—you might consider creating one please? I've seen your work on other arms and it really is excellent! Dgp4004 (talk) 15:35, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- More than happy to create this! Thanks for thinking of me :)
- I shall let you know once I've finished.
- Thanks ProfAuthor (talk) 15:38, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- That's wonderful, thank you so much :) Dgp4004 (talk) 16:35, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hey! Just letting you know I've finished and uploaded this here: File:Coat of Arms of Borough of Halton.svg. Thanks again :) ProfAuthor (talk) 00:39, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
- They look fantastic, thank you so much! I always love your motto scrolls in particular.
- Just based on the blazon though, I believe the wreath in the crest (and therefore the mantling I suppose), is supposed to be red and gold rather than red and silver?
- 'Crest: On a Wreath Or and Gules'
- I think the logic was to reflect the old county of Lancashire by using red and gold:
- Also, good find on the abbots' crozier! I had no idea they were often wooden. Although I've just noticed that other depictions show it with what looks like a wooden staff but a golden crook. I've no idea which is correct. Dgp4004 (talk) 11:20, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oops! Excellent spot, finished this at 1am this morning so must've overlooked that! I'll get it changed. Thanks for noticing haha. ProfAuthor (talk) 11:25, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you :) The other thing that just occurred to me—I wonder if it would be worth mirroring the two rivers in the shield? So that one doesn't appear to be longer than the other because of the angle of the shield. What do you think? Dgp4004 (talk) 12:09, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
- Uploaded the corrected torse and mantling! I tried mirroring the pallets but it ended up looking strange so just left as is. ProfAuthor (talk) 20:42, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

- Unified reply at here (because the talk pages will also be deleted should the files are subject to deletion):
- Please do so. I think the current logo will probably end up as a fair-use file on Wikipedia, as the threshold of originality in the UK is extremely low. Also remember {{OGL3}} doesn't cover coat of arms.廣九直通車 (talk) 08:26, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
- Are you able to change the files to a non-free? Or do you have a guide on how to that I can follow? Thanks ProfAuthor (talk) 08:33, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
