Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Simple coat of arms images that should use vector graphics
[edit]Can you explain to me what is your treshold for simplicity? How in the world is File:Armas duques vila real.png or File:Armas de Sancho-Miñano.png simple, compared to actually simple designs like File:Armas Champaña.png. - Hi TFerenczy, thanks you to report me these files. I agree, the composition is complex but the number of charges is limited and it is not so difficult to recreate them in SVG format by using the c:Category:SVG coat of arms elements - charges.
- However, I think that I misunderstood the "simple" word in the category name. For me, "simple" refers to the shield without external ornaments. You think it is a reference to the complexity of the shield itself.

- @Thcollet: Heureux d'apprendre que vous vous lancez dans le blasonnement. C'est un art subtile qui peut être complexe mais auquel je trouve une poésie particulière à ce mélange de néologismes et de langage délicieusement désuet, à cette syntaxe sans verbe et méthodique. Ca nécessite malheureusement une connaissance importante des définitions. Je vous recommande à ce sujet, deux sites intéressants : Au balson des armoiries et Euraldic qui fournissent des définitions de qualité (le premier à cet avantage de fournir des exemples visuels). Vous pouvez également jeter un coup d'œil sur le Wiktionnaire que j'enrichis chaque fois que je peux : wikt:fr:Thésaurus:héraldique/français. J'ajoute également des exemples visuels pour un maximum d'articles et j'homogénéise la forme des définitions. Depuis peu, j'essaie de mettre un lien dans les articles sur les termes vers les catégories sur Commons mais ce n'est encore qu'une ébauche (section : Voir aussi).
- J'ai encore beaucoup à apprendre .
- Concernant les armoiries que vous m'avez signalées, le blasonnement est correct pour moi.
- J'aurai juste une suggestion qui n'a rien à voir avec le blasonnement, n'hésitez pas à catégoriser techniquement les armoiries qui ne le sont pas ou peu. Ca aidera ceux qui cherchent des exemples (et même ceux qui veulent identifier des armoiries). Ce n'est pas toujours évident à faire parce que les catégories sont en anglais. Pour vous aider, vous pouvez regarder cette page : Illustrated atlas of French and English heraldic terms. Elle offre, une traduction français/anglais des principaux termes, mais tout n'y est pas.

- Bonsoir Brookford. Ce dessin a été réalisé sur la base d'un blasonnement. La famille n'a donc aucun droit en quoi que ce soit à nous demander de supprimer cette image. La famille peut détenir des droits sur une image qu'elle a fait réaliser, mais pas sur le blasonnement qui est un texte. C'est pourquoi on fait nous-même les images pour contourner un éventuel droit d'auteur sur les images pré-existantes. Je ne vois donc pas de raison de faire une demande de suppression. Dragon en cimier

- Bonsoir Brookford. Le blason (grammaire) ne s'applique pas aux ornements extérieurs. Habituellement, il y a un respect de ses règles mais avec une certaine souplesse pouvant aller jusqu'à du je-m'en-foutisme éhonté. C'est pourquoi je préfère me focaliser sur les armoiries plutôt qu'aux ornements extérieurs.
- Je ne pense pas qu'il soit vraiment nécessaire d'entrer trop dans les détails. Pour moi, il s'agit d'un dragon éployé issant de la couronne.

- Brookford, ce n'est pas uniquement le cimier mais bien tous les ornements extérieurs (casque, couronne, supports, tenants, devise, terrasse et j'en passe) qui ne sont pas soumis au blason. En fait, la pratique de transformer des armoiries personnelles en armoiries familiales stabilisées a rapidement posé problème puisque les héritiers de la famille n'avaient pas le choix de leurs armes (à la brisure près). Mais une fois l'héritier devenu le responsable de la famille, il perdait ses propres armoiries pour récupérer celles de la famille. Or il est humainement naturel de vouloir faire partie d'un groupe tout en se démarquant. Ces armoiries ne permettant pas de se distinguer, les gens ont adopté les ornements extérieurs moins rigoureux et aisément personnalisables avec profusion de possibilités de mettre en avant son narcissisme autant que sa superbe réelle ou fantasmée. Evidemment, les confréries, ordres divers et compagnie ont exploité les ornements extérieurs. C'était plus simple de mettre un collier de jarretière ou des crosses derrière un écu plutôt que de modifier des armoiries déjà chargées par les écartelés et autres partitions destinées à accumuler les références aux alliances et suzerainetés diverses.
- Historiquement et généalogiquement, ces éléments sont intéressants et fournissent plein d'informations sur les prétendants à ces éléments. Mais héraldiquement (au sens armoiries), ça n'a aucune importance, c'est du décorum.
- La preuve, seules les armoiries sont reconnues juridiquement, c'était comme une signature (à l'époque où elles étaient utilisées en France, mais c'est toujours valable en Angleterre par exemple). Jpgibert (talk) 20:16, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

I removed the metacat template you put on some categories
[edit]Hello, Jpgibert. I noticed that you put a metacat template on some categories that are not metacats. One of them was Category:2 church bells in heraldry. You put {{MetaCat|number}}
on that category. That is not correct, because the subcats in that category are not grouped by the number of church bells. It does appear that they are supposed to be grouped by tincture, but this is not a metacat by tincture, either, because the category name doesn't indicate such a grouping.

- Hello, Auntof6. Before all thing, thanks a lot for your attention. Commons is a very big project difficult to maintain.
- I understand your explanation. Maybe my choice is not good (inspired by another category). I used this template to encourage users to avoid image categorization in these specific categories. This in the goal to respect the usage principle of the most precisely category (I'm not sure to be clear, sorry, my english is not very good). For me, these categories are here only to group another categories.
- If you think that is not a good idea, I note this and will avoid to repeat it in future. Maybe there is another method to do that or another template ?

[edit]Bonjour Jpgibert, concernant la famille Janssen, le blason appartient au Baron (Léon) Janssen anobli en 1910. Il a choisi RECTITUDO comme devise.
Le blason appartient au Baron Emmanuel Janssen, anobli en 1930. Il a choisi la même devise que celle de sont cousin léon. Ses descendants présents sur Wikipédia sont Charles-Emmanuel Janssen, Daniel Janssen et Nicolas Janssen.
Les autres, comme Charles Janssen, Albert-Edouard Janssen etc ne portent pas ces blasons.

[edit]Hello, thanks to your corrections to among other files, File:COA-family-sv-Brummer 1772.png, I have now started a renovation of my uploaded files, where I will collect the corrected versions I changed with Commons:AWB in Category:CoA_Lab-sv, which is presently my end station for corrected files, both considering recommended tincture hexadecimal colors, as well as proper descriptions. All further input from you very much appreciated. I think the Heraldry project pages should be updated, and more informative, so active contributors save time, and I think it could be a very active section, if taken care of better. Again, thanks, and if you have time to check how I work, please considerate giving more advice. It seems many people worked a lot to improve heraldry on commons before, lately I have not seen many... - I sorry for my poor english. I'm not sure to understand all your comment. I hope my answer will help you.
- I don't patrol on heraldic drawing but I check sometimes a set of categories (bells for example) and I try to keep them clear by precise categorization (colors and numbers). When I see images without french description, I try to provide one and convert to COAInformation template as recommended by the Heraldry project.
- I don't know what is your knowledge about heraldry concepts. Don't take offense if my explanations seem trivial to you.
- Regarding the tincture, the {{Tincture}} template provide some hexadecimal colors. But these values are not official and mandatory. Each heraldic project uses its own hexadecimal values (historic legacy). In French Projet Blasons we use some values not used in swedish heraldry. And it is not a problem. The heraldry uses tincture concept and not real colors. If you are able to recognize a blue tincture, you have azure tincture. The variation around the blue color is considered as azure. Idem for other colors. So, you don't have to use the recommended hexadecimal colors if you work for a specific heraldry (germanic, british, french, spannish, italian...).
- Personally, I use french recommended colors to provide homogeneous representation in the same version of the french Wikipedia.

- Hi Soap Boy 1, I created a first insignia. But I can see in the original file on the english Wikipedia a non-free restriction on the file. The definition is deliberately low to be used on wikipedia. So I think that a recreation is not allowed especially on Commons. I propose to wait to see if someone ask to delete it for copy violation. The reason for non free restriction on the files are probably because of the reason that these images are being used without the permission of the author.
But most of these insignia are over 60 years old and according to Indian law works enter the public domain 60 years after the date on which they were first published. So if you are creating the insignia yourself, they will be free to use.
I recommend you to use following licensings in your file:

- {{insignia}}
- {{PD-India}}
- {{PD-EdictGov}}

No one deleted the first file you created for copy violation. I even added it in the Wikipedia article page. So I think it will be okay to create others.

I stumbled upon one of your image which led me to your talk page, where I found you were requested to make the logos for the regiments. P.S. - You would easily find logos of regiments by searching on Google, as most uploaded to Wikipedia are of poor quality.
Also most of the regiments were raised during British rule as a part of British Indian Army so they have similar logos as some of the regiments of the British Army (just the crown swapped with Indian emblem after independence). You may use already uploaded British army logos to lessen your work. For example- Royal Corps of Signals and Indian Army Corps of Signals, Royal Artillery and Regiment of Artillery, The Rifles and Rajputana Rifles and many more.

@Cookersweet: I know I have skipped some of the regiments (of infantary) as their insignias were not same like the others. I only requested golden insignia as they were uniform in nature. I requested you to draw the Coat of Arms used by the Company between 1600-1709. Yeah, the request was completed but the SVG versions vary a lot from the original, as they were made by just combining different elements available on commons.

- Heraldically, the coat of arms provided by the contributor is correct. There is just one little error, the leopards must be langued and armed azure. On the image, the leopards are langued gules and armed argent.
- So, I think you want particular external ornaments.
- External ornaments are problematic in heraldry. There is no real heraldic rules on them. It is more a decoration than anything else. So, this is why we can find a lot of variation about them for the same coat of arms. Personally, I am not interested in these elements.
- But, if you want a specific set, indicates me which image is the reference for you (perhaps, heraldry-wiki one?) and I will try to adapt the image to obtain the rendering expected. Jpgibert (talk) 20:15, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

- For your information, I don't convert to SVG, I redraw images for better rendering and create lightweight files (and, incidentally, I try to limit the carbon impact of my images).
- Moreover, the requested images contain the Lion Capital of Ashoka. The only SVG version of this sculpture on Commons is very beautiful and heavy! I'm working on a lightweight version of this file but it is not available yet.

Fichier Michel de Cambernon
[edit]Bonjour jpgibert, l'aperçu du fichier Michel de Cambernon.svg format 1681x2048 pixels a été altéré: il manque 2 coquilles cantons 3 et 4 alors que tout était bon au départ en 2019. Bizarrement, on avait relevé ce même problème pour le fichier "Michel de Vesly" qui a été corrigé depuis par l'auteur. - Bonjour Matchikoul, ce problème d'éléments SVG qui disparaissent par moment mais qui sont toujours corrects sur l'image SVG elle-même (je ne parle pas des aperçus) est généralement dû à des problèmes de clones. En effet, le format SVG permet de créer des clones de clones, ce qui est très utile, surtout quand on fait de feuillages. Sauf que l'outil de génération de PNG utilisé par Wikimedia Commons est aux fraises. Il ne gère pas cette opération. J'ai déjà corrigé pas mal d'images (miennes ou pas) et je fais attention pour les nouvelles, mais il en reste.
- J'ignore pourquoi la fondation ne change pas cet outil merdique pour le remplacer par un valable. Les navigateurs embarquent tous un convertisseur SVG qui fonctionne bien. Enfin, faut faire avec.
- Le problème est corrigé. En fait, il semble qu'une version du logiciel de conversion PNG ait bien fonctionné pendant un temps. Les aperçus des images étaient correctes et en cache. Mais celles qui n'étaient pas en cache présentaient le problème. Une fois mis à jour, les images en cache ont été recalculé et le bug est apparu là où il n'était pas visible (cf. historique du fichier).

- I agree with you, charges can have a tincture, but a charge or ordinary, alone, is just an element to use in coat of arms and its color (or transparency) is not important in heraldry point of view. For me, indicating a color on a charge or ordinary is not relevant.
- Another thing, I can see the category SVG coats of arms of France on the indicated gallo-roman sigillated chalice. But elements are not a coat of arms. For me, this is an error to categorize a charge as coat of arms. Moreover, these elements are also used in other countries coat of arms.

Blason Castelbajac

Passant par ici, je souhaitais vous informer que ce blason est probabement erroné…
Jougla, qui a servi de référence lors de la demande, est peut-être coupable d'une mauvaise lecture (ce ne serait pas la première fois) car il est bien le seul à ranger les fleurs en fasce alors que les autres sources (Armorial toulousain, Armorial des Landes, ou simplement Rietstap) les rangent 2 et 1, positionnement par défaut que Jougla, donc, appréhende parfois difficilement.
Par ailleurs, des modifications ont été faites sur la page de la famille qui ne paraissent pas relever du vandalisme, malgré le récent verrouillage, mais semblent bien corroborer le blasonnement 2 et 1.
Il va de soi que le blason de la commune est probablement également fautif, son « statut officiel restant à déterminer »…
Je reste curieux quant à votre opinion, il y a peut-être d'autres sources, et si vous le souhaitez je pourrais facilement m'occuper des deux le cas échéant.

- @Soap Boy 1: some figures are not a representation of attitudes: coward, baillone, morne, defamed, disjointed and the following.
- These figures are illustrations of lion's properties. The queue noued (knotted tail) is available for all attitude (rampant, couchant, dormant, passant...). Technically, it is possible to find on shield a lion coward statant guardant.
- So, if you want to keep all the images currently present in your page, I think it's better to rename the page to reflect all the lion's properties in heraldry. Something like Heraldic lion's representations for example.
