Thanks for uploading File:Reflex camera simple labels (uk).png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 16:16, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About File:Olga Monument.jpg, you can't just overwrite a file. You can upload it as a separate file. Evrik (talk) 21:43, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

[edit]
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Piramidion,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
File:Lindsey performing on her world tour on June 2014.jpeg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid. Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

Aloha!

Not judging either way, but I must say that your changes stirred up quite some dust. The discussion aside, I like to advise you to announce changes on sensitive pages - for that use your best judgement - on the Com:AN and / or here. Then WAIT 12/24 hrs. Again, use your judgment. Add that you resume work @ 58:00 pm or whatever. It should prevent at least some of the time wasting discussions we have now on several pages. We guard our pages with some jealousy♨, as you may have noticed. Thanks for doing some much needed legwork. C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 09:35, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for your feedback on the situation. I'll try to apply your suggestions next time, but not sure if it would help: I lack some experience in working with translatable templates, and the pages I edited would be messed up for some time in any case, at least until I fixed them. It's just that here on Commons everything works a bit differently than on other Wikimedia projects. I'm not used to such situations when someone's just boldly reverting my changes this way, especially ignoring the edit summaries that I wrote explicitly to prevent people from reverting. Perhaps it's a normal situation for Commons, but to me this doesn't comply with assuming good faith. Btw, right now my changes remain reverted by another user, but I hope he just didn't get the full understanding of the situation, and will revert back after he's sorted everything out UPD: Everything is back already . Thanks anyways.--Piramidion (talk) 10:41, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we play ball a bit differently than most wikis. I try to leave a note if I suspect good faith edits and / or someone like a translation admin. Doesn't always work tho, we all forgot stuff from time to time. I do think it would help to let peeps know what you are doing. But that is totally up to you. As long as everything works nobody will complain, I guess. Get a coffee and then back to work! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 11:23, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
File:Nykula.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Template Questions

[edit]

Hey Piramidion! I posted a response to your comments on my talk page there. Please check when you get a chance. In addition, I have a question. If I respond to a topic you create on my talk page, do you automatically get a notification for that, or do I need to do something to make that happen? Thanks! MtDu

LrMediaWiki

[edit]

Dear Piramidion,

two weeks ago you marked a version of COM:LRMW for translation. Thanks a lot for doing so!

I am not familiar with the translation system and maybe, you can help me. Recently, I added a new section COM:LRMW#Placeholders. It includes a table and I know, the table isn't prepared for translation. Do you know, what has to be done to prepare the table for translation?

Any kind of help is appreciated.

Kind regards, --Hasenläufer 05:36, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I've started to prepare the table for translation. I'm leaving the parameters names unchanged, as I don't know if the Lightroom has any translations to other languages. Is that OK? And one more - does LrMediaWiki have any translations? Because if not, the file names shouldn't be made translatable.--Piramidion (talk) 08:30, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Piramidion, thanks a lot! Yes, the parameter names should not be translated. To give an idea, how the table could look in German and French, visit User:Hasenläufer/LrMediaWikiPlaceholderSandbox. Yes, LrMediaWiki has a translation: German. See e.g. the 6 files "LrMediaWiki 0.5 ... [English|German].jpg] at Category:LrMediaWiki screenshots. Maybe, in future I will take further screenshots – then I will name them in the same manner. Maybe, LrMediaWiki could be translated into further languages (Lightroom supports 12 languages) by further localization dictionary files. They would look like the German localization dictionary file. --Hasenläufer 09:48, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks! As for Lightroom fields in other languages – I can see that they're translated in your sandbox. I didn't make them translatable so far, should I?--Piramidion (talk) 10:03, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please! --Hasenläufer 13:43, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One additional remark: At some fields of the second table column I added an example. I did it, if the output format depends on localisation settings. E. g. placebolder <fileSize>, English: "23.27 MB", German: "23,27 MB", French: "23,27 Mo". --Hasenläufer 14:11, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So the whole example should be made translatable, not just the word "Example"?--Piramidion (talk) 14:25, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I tried to explain. --Hasenläufer 14:31, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe, you are interested, how Adobe handles localization. They call it "ZStrings", see page 148 of Lightroom SDK guide. LrMediaWiki currently provides only one translation, it's the German localization dictionary file "TranslatedStrings_de.txt". The English "master" of the strings are distributiv in the *.lua files. Currently there is not a master file "TranslatedStrings_en.txt". To support further translations of LrMediaWiki, I'm thinking about an automation: An English master file "TranslatedStrings_en.txt" could be automatically generated by searching the Lua files for calls of the function "LOC", which has as parameter a ZString key to an entry of the localization dictionary file. An Unix shell script should be able to do it. E. g., someone will support a French translation; then an English master file might be more of interest as the German version. --Hasenläufer 14:31, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info (I'll need to read it more carefully to understand everything). I think I've done everything needed, but will check it while translating later. If you find any errors or need assistance with preparing some other pages for translation – just let me know.--Piramidion (talk) 15:19, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for your support! --Hasenläufer 20:53, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zh variant trans issue

[edit]

Hello, regarding the Chinese variant translations issue, I posted it at Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2017/03#Chinese_variant_translations_should_not_be_disabled and it was soon archived at the end of month without any helpful response. I posted it at User talk:MtDu#Chinese variant translations should not be disabled, but he hasn't answered and you said translation admins are not responsible or able to do anything. I cannot find any issue tracking system for Commons' new translation system. Could you tell me where I should post this issue please? There must be some techniciens who are responsible, right? I would just like to enable zh-hans and zh-hant, just as translatewiki.net does, and restore and move deleted zh-cn and zh-tw translations to zh-hans and zh-hant respectively. Thank you very much. --Tomchen1989 (talk) 11:51, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps @Nemo bis: has some info on that issue. Otherwise you may try to file a task on Phabricator – perhaps you'll find someone who can tell what story is behind all this.--Piramidion (talk) 17:12, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Tomchen1989: I have found this ticket: phab:T39338. It says that there's some language converter which makes manual creating of zh-* pages unnecessary. I, personally, don't know what that means, as I don't know what's the difference between all these languages. --Piramidion (talk) 20:19, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
