HABS

Hi. Could you explain the thinking behind your category changes of HABS-related images, because I'm not understanding them, and I'd like to do it correctly next time I edit an HABS image. Should the HABS category only go on the actual HABS image, and not on the category for the building? And why did your bot move HABS images in NYC into "Historic buildings in New York City"?

Ditto here. Who is it that prefers a giant, packed category such as "Historic buildings in Knoxville" as opposed to the narrower "Historic American Buildings Survey in Knoxville"? The term "historic building" is meaningless and subjective. Bms4880 (talk) 19:13, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for not finishing this. I got sidetracked. So at the moment we have three things combined:

• The source of the image (HABS)
• The topic of the image (historic buildings)
• The copyright status of the image (PD-USgov)

Here at Commons we generally don't intersect topic categories (historic buildings) with source categories (HABS). I'm currently untangling this.

I'm doing this in preparation of Commons:Batch uploading/HABS.

So you might wonder why these kind of intersections are not useful: People are looking for a photo of a certain topic. The source is not really relevant. Intersecting the topic will the source actually makes it harder to find the images. I expect the tree to become much bigger (probably per county) when the bot really starts to upload a lot of images. You realize people search for HABS photos specifically, right? All this will do is create one big over-populated category. What is a "historic building"? You can argue any building is "historic" and thus belongs in the category. Having been documented by HABS gives it a special status. Bms4880 (talk) 22:05, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

A agree with Bms4880. I think the problem is the perception that HABS is only a "source" category, when, in fact, it is both a source and a topic, given the survey's significance. I don't think that the re-categorization you're doing is all that helpful to the reader searching for HABS material. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:44, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Anyway, we need a category structure that can fit all historic and disappeared items that are not covered by Category:National Register of Historic Places. What status (and permanent) ID gets an item when in HABS, and how many organisations and libraries have similar related parallel classifications and projects ? I agree with Bms4880 and Beyond My Ken, HABS is both a source and a topic category. Also, in U.S. building/history image categorization there is a precedent for intersecting topic and principle source categories, such as LOC, library-university Photography Collection, or NARA. Kategorisierer

ich kategorisiere mehr schlecht als recht seit langer Zeit und habe zwei Fragen/Vorschläge:

1. Gibt es eine Abfragemöglichkeit, um User, die viele unkategorisierte Dateien hochgeladen haben zu finden; um die Dateien einfacher zu kategorisieren (meistens sind schon einige Dateien kategorisiert); z. B. [1]

2. Kann man auf commons die Gruppe der Kategorisierer einrichten, die sich gegenseitig Hinweise gibt und hilft. Ich verstehe z. B. bis heute nicht den Unterschied zwischen [[Category:| ]], [[Category:|+]] und [[Category:|*]]. Es gibt ja schon die Gruppen Patroller und Rollbacker.

Please, Maarten, the licence text above doesn't let any room for interpretations. a copy of this licence or its full internet address. A link to the deed is not the full adress of the legalcode. You may like or not like my additional explanations, but I think the licence requirements are not discussable. I do no touch Commons' CC-templates as there is no consensus about changing them, but I think nobody should change correct licencing of my own pictures. --Martina talk 16:50, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Just some evidence for my and Martinas claim:

• Sie müssen dabei stets eine Kopie dieser Lizenz oder deren vollständige Internetadresse in Form des Uniform-Resource-Identifier (URI) beifügen.(sections 4a and 4b in [2])
• Diese "Commons Deed" ist lediglich eine vereinfachte Zusammenfassung des rechtsverbindlichen Lizenzvertrages in allgemeinverständlicher Sprache.(header of [3])

Besides of this legal aspect, it's the more important as CC's deed does not correctly represent their own license term "communicate the license terms" (together with the credit), as the deed presents this only as a sort of footnote at the bottom of the deed page saying "Hinweis — Im Falle einer Verbreitung müssen Sie anderen alle Lizenzbedingungen mitteilen, die für dieses Werk gelten. Am einfachsten ist es, an entsprechender Stelle einen Link auf diese Seite einzubinden.", whereas in the binding legalcode this condition is presented even before the "author credit" term. bot adding incorrect categories especially Walton (Walton, Liverpool)

Do not start this again please. I have already questioned this a few months ago about images being put incorrectly in to Liverpool districts, including that of Walton in Surrey which is nothing to do with Walton in Liverpool. This query returns "Walton on the Hill". Category:Walton on the Hill redirects to Category:Walton, Liverpool and the bot follows that. Deleted the redirect. Is Template:PD-Art/sandbox ready for prime time? There is a request to add an extra parameter which can be passed to template in , allowing merging of templates like {{PD-Art}} and {{PD-old-auto|1900}}. BOT adding incorrect county to Geograph images

Hi, can something be done to change the BOT to stop it adding incorrect county categories. For example this edit added both Category:Buildings in North Yorkshire and Category:Buildings in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Whitby is no where near the county boundary so should not be confused by which county to apply. In the last week I have removed about 400 of these type of double categorisations added by the BOT. You page could be very useful for choosing the right image for the list, except it is very hard to find pictures lower in the page.
