Getting help

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Categorising images of Royal Navy ships

Thankyou for transferring images from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons, and for categorising them. Wikimedia has nearly 25 million files, so it helps to assign each image as precisely as possible. Wikimedia Commons has a separate category for each current ship of the Royal Navy (and many hundreds of past ones), and also a special category for aerial photographs of warships. Please note how I have recategorised these of your contributions:

I estimate you have transferred about 80 images of Royal Navy from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons. I have recategorised seven of them. Please will you recategorise the rest?

Foto series: Sana'a after airstrike 20-4-2015...

Hello, Mr. Ibrahem. I used two out of the seven fotos for the German WP article (de:Militärintervention im Jemen 2015), and I just want to ask, whether you can confirm when the fotos have been taking and to which air strike they refer to. Did I understand it correctly, that:

the fotos have been shot on April 21, 2015?
the fotos show destruction in Sanaa, resulting from the airstrike of April 20, 2015?

In addition, it was uploaded before that source would have displayed that time, which is another reason to believe it did not come from the indicated source. I had to outsource some information from German WP article de:Militärintervention im Jemen 2015 to other articles, one of them being de:Humanitäre Aspekte der Militärintervention im Jemen 2015. I noticed some information in ar:التدخل العسكري في اليمن could be complement with recent UN data. Unfortunately I am not able to read and write Arabic text, so I cannot participate in ar:WP directly and I am even not able to help to repair some corrupted references. But maybe some of the tables or latest data in those tables of the above mentioned article can be used in ar:WP. Only if regarded as useful of course.
