Hello, Kanashimi!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Cewbot not really helpful

[edit]

Hi Kanashimi, Cewbot is currently removing very many files from categories like Category:Photos from Panoramio ID 596286 needing categories‎. While many of these files do have some kind of categories, these were often chosen with very little diligence. For example, some editors moved thousands of files to categories that are far too general like Category:Baden-Württemberg (a state) when the files should be moved at least to the level of municipalities. As all these files possess coordinates, it is possible to categorize them very thoroughly. Category names like Photos from Panoramio ID XXXXXX needing categories‎ should actually be read like "needing category check". So I'm not happy if your bot removes files that still haven't been checked thoroughly, and still require maintenance, from these maintenance categories. Regards, --Sitacuisses (talk) 19:15, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sitacuisses: I have stop the task this week. Are we have a standard to distinguish that if a photo is categorized enough? --Kanashimi (talk) 23:23, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
First: The Bot removes two categories from Panoramio files Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories as of 2017-XX-XX and Category:Photos from Panoramio ID XXXXXX needing categories. I think it's fine to remove the date category even if the categorization is insufficient. But the "by ID" category is often helpful to find similar images by the same photographer that require better categories. I don't know about a standard that can serve as a rule for bots. Maybe we could say that if a category has more than e.g. two category levels below itself, it's probably too general. But normally this is decided by human users. That's what we have Template:Check categories for. So the best solution would be to add a "Check categories" button that removes all the "... needing categories" cats after the check. --Sitacuisses (talk) 12:29, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Sitacuisses: I may add Template:Check categories instead, but I don't know whether it is a good idea or not if there are thousands of photos with this template... --Kanashimi (talk) 13:45, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There already are thousands of files with this template; e.g. more than 5000 in Category:Media needing category review as of 1 April 2017 alone. If this template helps to remove the obsolete categories with a single click it's still useful. --Sitacuisses (talk) 13:55, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I will remove Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories as of 2017-XX-XX and Category:Photos from Panoramio ID XXXXXX needing categories, and add Template:Check categories instead. --Kanashimi (talk) 14:05, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's better than leaving nothing at all. But maybe it would be even better to leave Category:Photos from Panoramio ID XXXXXX needing categories where it is, since this one groups similar files by one photographer that require a check. If replaced with the general Category:Media needing category review as of XXX, we lose this feature. --Sitacuisses (talk) 14:55, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Sitacuisses: I have make a change on GitHub to remove "Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories as of 2017-XX-XX" but not "Category:Photos from Panoramio ID XXXXXX needing categories", "Category:Media needing category review as of XXX". I am sorry that this will not fix the changes the task had made. --Kanashimi (talk) 00:25, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! --Sitacuisses (talk) 07:37, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how Cewbot's edits are a problem. They are at worst a lateral move. If a file's category is too broad, that would need to be fixed independently of these panoramio categories. I don't see this as any different than removing Uncategorized from a file which has a valid category, even if that category is too broad. These categories are pretty broad. Is that controversial? kennethaw88talk 07:31, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Kennethaw88: Unfortunately many users haven't understood how helpful coordinates and user categories can be in categorizing the Panoramio files, and they just keep on moving files across category levels like they've always done. If a file's category is too broad, you may probably not even find that file, since it's in an inappropriate place. If you go to the user category, you may find similar photographs and categorize them perfectly (with the help of the coordinates) in a single run, without wasting time with multiple moves to more general categories. --Sitacuisses (talk) 07:37, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Right, but they still have the coordinates even without being in the panoramio categories. Most (almost all) of the panoramio user categories have files across many locations. Fine-level categorization isn't necessarily any easier this way than just using a broad category. Someone can go into Category:Baden-Württemberg (or even Category:New South Wales) and find the same coordinates there. In fact, it's easier using the broad category in this case, because they are already grouped geographically. The geographic grouping is almost always better than for any random panoramio user. kennethaw88talk 08:40, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You don't find coordinates in Category:Baden-Württemberg. You find them on a map (Commons on OSM is another helpful tool). Baden-Württemberg has 11 million inhabitants and 1100 municipalities. No one will look for a specific file in that category except some hardcore category experts. As a geographic group it's pretty much useless. However I found various user categories that group files which follow a travel route or document the surroundings of the photographer's home. --Sitacuisses (talk) 09:43, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup of Photos from Panoramio needing categories

[edit]

If your bot Cewbot periodically cleans Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories by date, why doesn't he also clean Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories by ID? Any technical reason or is any other reason? Thanks, anyway, for the regular cleanup. Tm (talk) 21:32, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is an interesting idea. When I create the bot, Howcheng only asked for Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories by date, so I did not touched Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories by ID. To clean Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories by ID as well, I need to check the source code again. --Kanashimi (talk) 22:11, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Howcheng: Thanks for your fast answer. The problem is that if one category is removed, but the other is not, many times what happens is that the file already categorized is recategorized again to an upper or lateral category, wasting and doubling categorization efforts. If the change could be made that would be great, for the reasons stated before. Tm (talk) 23:39, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Hi:

I had to rename and recategorized these images that your bot wrongly name maps. These ares not maps but a satellite image loops. Please change the naming scheme of your bot.

Thank you. Can I get image with data from https://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/proddemo.html ? So I can know the data of tropical cyclones in the same time... Kanashimi (talk) 23:08, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It seen, this is one problem, need more information this. HurricaneEdgar 02:50, 8 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@HurricaneEdgar Hi. I find there are several kinds of image to choice.
 1. In https://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/tcdat/tc2021/AL/AL922021/png_clean/ , how about Infrared/ and Infrared/ ?
 2. And in https://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/tcdat/tc2021/AL/AL922021/png_clean/Infrared/ , how about goes-17/ ?
 3. What is the best naming of the files? Kanashimi (talk) 00:47, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I may use "2021 NRL 08E HILDA visible infrared satellite, infrared.png" or "2021 NRL 08E HILDA visible infrared satellite, infrared-gray.png" Kanashimi (talk) 00:54, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

the best image name in the file is 2021 NRL 08E HILDA visible infrared sattellite, infrared-gray.png great title. HurricaneEdgar 02:26, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

So the Infrared/ and Visible/ is not so good? And how about goes-17/ and other satellites? Kanashimi (talk) 02:29, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

i have a link which is good to image here

goes-16 AL himawari-8 WPAC goes-17 EP mg-1 IO himawari-8 SWIO

HurricaneEdgar 02:55, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

might is this recommended by the title of image for

 • WPAC: 2021 NRL WP06 visible infrared sattelite if there no name use them, is there a name use this 2021 NRL WP06 Lupit visible infrared sattelite ( this is example )

@HurricaneEdgar I have tried some images. Please check the latest upload. --Kanashimi (talk) 03:22, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, just to let you know, due to geostationary satellite placements, GOES-17 gives higher resolution pictures for storms in the Eastern Pacific since it is located over the basin; the same goes with GOES-16 in the Atlantic (GOES-17, GOES-16). Great work on the images! Akbermamps (talk) 06:35, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Read my text, all those images go into the sub-directories of Category:2022 Atlantic hurricane season for the system they are related to (e.g. photos for Colin go into the sub-directory Category:Tropical Storm Colin (2022) for instance). For the Invests, they go into Category:2022 Atlantic hurricane season until they are assigned to a named system or into Category:2022 Atlantic non-developing invests if they never develop. Categories of tropical cyclone seasons

[edit]

Could your Cewbot stop inputting wrong or inexistent categories for tropical cyclones. For instance, you have inputted Category:2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season for satellite images of Category:Cyclone Djoungou from 2023-24 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season. In other cases, you have inputted a non-existent Category:2023-24 Southern Hemisphere typhoon season as there is no such thing as a Typhoon in south Pacific and all images sent there where from different sub-categories of Category:2023-24 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season.

Please input the correct sub-category the most related to your uploaded satellite images, not a random category!

Pierre cb (talk) 15:40, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I will change the method of detecting the categories. Please let me know if it is still incorrect. Kanashimi (talk) 02:25, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I basically named the files according to the information registered on the JTWC website. The latest number on the website is now WTXS22, so I think it won't touch WTXS21. Kanashimi (talk) 05:50, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong names of images

[edit]

Please correct another time your Cewbot image names. It keeps doing wrong naming and/or categorization. For instance uploading new version of images over a totally different systems (e.g. File:2024 JTWC WTXS21 IR satellite imagery.95S.jpg), giving non-existant categories (e.g. "Category:2023-24 Southern Hemisphere typhoon season" as there is no such thing) or using wrong categories "Category:2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season" when it is obvious that it is Category:2023-24 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season). I kept reporting these errors and nothing change.

 • 95S: I don't see any 95S alerts right now. I guess maybe JTWC uses the same number on different tropical cyclones?
 • "Category:2023-24 Southern Hemisphere typhoon season": Sorry I forgot to update the code, I just did.
 • "Category:2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season": Sorry, can you give me a file case?

I re-ran the program, and now the image is categorized into Category:2023-24 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season. The robots are basically categorized according to the information on the CIMSS web page. I'm curious if CIMSS changes the location information with the location of the tropical cyclone. Accessing old forecast cone images

[edit]

Do you know how I can anchor a file used on Wikipedia to a specific version. I am most interested in the current version of Hurricane Makani's cone for its article on the English Wikipedia. Thanks, ✶Mitch199811 23:28, 26 April 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quxyz (talk • contribs) 23:28, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Like this? Kanashimi (talk) 00:03, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Im not sure if that'd work because I don't think you can create images with links in Wikipedia. My issue looks to be moot anyways as the JTWC hasn't issued another advisory since 25 April. ✶Quxyz 22:31, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another way is to upload this version separately. Kanashimi (talk) 22:59, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of "Twenty-three"

[edit]

Hello, I have noticed that Cewbot has uploaded a satellite loop named "File:2024 CIMSS 23S Twentythre visible infrared satellite loop.gif". The spelling of "twenty-three" is wrong, and I have moved it to the correct filename "File:2024 CIMSS 23S Twentythree visible infrared satellite loop.gif". It would be great if it could be corrected in the future. Thank you! 2003 LN6 01:19, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I basically named it after the name CIMSS gave me. The name is not generated by the robot itself... Kanashimi (talk) 03:33, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
