Latin motto help needed (Coat of arms of Nam-Định City)
[edit]I cannot read what it says, as far as I can read it says something like "calamo gloria oryza XXX", with "XXX" being either "XXvitiaX" or "Tmvitiaf" (which would make no sense). I've looked for similar mottos but wasn't able to find one.
Does anyone know what this coat of arms says? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:48, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- For context, I took this image from what might as well be the only depiction of this coat of arms on the internet, so I can't find a better image of it anywhere. Maybe someone uploaded a better quality version of eBay many years back and someone else somehow managed to archive it, but I highly doubt that this is the case. So unfortunately, I can't provide a better image. -- Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:50, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- It could also be something like "Calamo gloria dryza XXX". With a "D" rather than an "O". -- Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:52, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- It could be Calamo gloria oryza divitia. Motto should have the meaning glory by the pen, wealth by the rice.--Massimop (talk) 00:07, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

Seeblätter and water lily leaves
[edit]Apparently Category:Seeblatt in heraldry and Category:Water lily leaves in heraldry are both subcategories of each other. @SpinnerLaserzthe2nd tried to fix this by moving Category:Seeblatt in heraldry to be a subcategory of Category:Leaves in heraldry, but I didn't notice the issue that this was addressing and thus undid it. (Note that Category:Water lily leaves in heraldry is also a subcategory of Category:Leaves in heraldry.)
I think it would be more elegant if one of these was just a subcategory of the other, and the one that was a subcategory of the other was not also a subcategory of Category:Leaves in heraldry, but have no strong opinion about whether a Seeblatt is a kind of water lily leaf or vice versa. (Possibly these should be merged instead? Unclear.)
I'd appreciate the consideration of others on this issue.

- It looks like that German does distinguish the Lake leaf (Seeblatt) from the Water lily (Seerose) which would therefore mean that there are two distinct plants, each of the categories having then to be independent and a sub-category of Category:Leaves in heraldry. --Kontributor 2K (talk) 17:58, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi everybody,
- As I understand it, seeblatt is the name given in Germanic countries to the stylized form of a water lily leaf in Germanic coats of arms.
- As in France, the fleur de lis is a stylized form of the iris leaf and cannot be assimilated to it.
- There is no technical equivalent to this term in French or English coats of arms. We must therefore keep it as it is, as in French when we use kleestengel or martlet, without trying to translate it.
- The logic currently used for fleur-de-lis and irises is fleur-de-lis is categorized as a sub-category of irises.
- If we apply the same logic, Seeblätter must be a sub-category of the water lily leaf.
- I hope this example can help the discussion. I wish you happy holidays.
