Either they changed the license or you were wrong: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/. -- RE rillke questions? 19:45, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, they did change the license. In the YouTube ([1]) description it says it is licensed under CC-BY-SA which, since perpetual, still applies now. InverseHypercube (talk) 20:49, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
This is Sal from the Khan Academy. Yes, the file is licensed under cc-by-sa so it is cool to use. I actually wanted to let you know that this video has an error in it and that I've made a new version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYnreB1duro.
In general, let me know if there are other videos that you all would want to use and we should be able to loosen the license on most of them (email me at sal@khanacademy.org).
-Sal
- Thank you Sal! I much appreciate the work you do with the Khan Academy. I will upload the updated file.
- Regarding the licenses on other files, I will email you. InverseHypercube (talk) 00:30, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

- OTRS is now pending. Thank you. InverseHypercube (talk) 21:09, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Just cropping an image is not enough original research to create a new copyright. It would be nice if you mention the original author, too even if this is not mandatory. -- RE rillke questions? 20:00, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- I did mention the original file and licensed it under the same license as the original. I see what you mean about the original author though; I will fix it. InverseHypercube (talk) 20:39, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Done. Does it look good now? InverseHypercube (talk) 20:42, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I thought the original was a PD US-Image (and therefore no attribution required). But I was wrong. It was cc-by and therefore this was a breach of terms and conditions of cc-by. Yes, now it looks good. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 13:55, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Sir It is true I uploaded these photos from my flickr account because I search and gather these photos for the purpose of article. I mainly found them on public domains or blogs or any other websites who are freely distribute their material.
- Hello. It would be preferrable that you don't upload these from your Flickr page, because then it is hard to find the license and the author of the original work. As well, it is not enough that you find your images on websites that freely distribute them, the author must either have licensed it under a free license, or have died 70 years ago. For works published in the US, anything published before 1923 is public domain. Regarding the Bombay Native Infantry file, it is old enough to be in the public domain. However, I nominated it for deletion since it is a duplicate of File:29TH BOMBAY NATIVE INFANTRY on Firing Exercise 1885 Simkin.jpg. InverseHypercube (talk) 17:16, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Sir please tell me How add public domain tag for India because upload form has united states license.Sir please tell me how to found license tags on blog.
- Copyright law in India is different than that of the United States; see Commons:PD#India. In essence, a work enters the public domain in India either 60 years after its publication or 60 years after the death of the author, depending on the work. The India copyright tag is at Template:PD-India. It's difficult to know what license a file has on a blog, but in general images on a blog are not created by the blog author. Sometimes, a picture on a blog will be old enough to be in the public domain, but you have to make sure first. See Commons:Free_media_resources for some good websites to find free images. InverseHypercube (talk) 18:13, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Sir please tell me how it is copy right violated
- It is an image by David Rowlands,[2] which is under copyright. It's a shame, because it's a really nice image. InverseHypercube (talk) 17:18, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
- Note that if you really want to have an image on Wikipedia which is still copyrighted, you can ask the author for permission. See Commons:OTRS. InverseHypercube (talk) 17:19, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Sir, Is wikipedia accepts written permissions.
- An email from the author is usually used, but if you have written permission, signed by the author, it would work as well if you scan it. InverseHypercube (talk) 18:04, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Sir I add some links and modify links of this image. Please see these links and verify them.
- Unfortunately, the page you linked is the license for phpBB, the forum software, which is open source. However, the images are not; they are part of a copyrighted book (unless the illustrator has died 60 years ago; see Commons:PD#India). It's a very nice image, but unfortunately it can't be used. InverseHypercube (talk) 18:02, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
- By the way, you should add ~~~~ at the end of your posts, so people can see your username. InverseHypercube (talk) 18:17, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:56, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
- Image:The Disquieting Muses 1947.jpg was uncategorized on 30 August 2011 CategorizationBot (talk) 11:56, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Sir I add Original links for this work. Please see these and verify them. Please sir --by sridhar1000
- Although that seems to be the original source, it never says that the images are licensed under a free license. InverseHypercube (talk) 20:03, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:Kite photo Cambridge.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Kite photo Cambridge.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Kite photo Cambridge.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

tretyakov.py lossless jpeg?
[edit]Hallo InverseHypercube, I just saw a upload by you using a ripped file. Is the convert +/-append
in User:InverseHypercube/tretyakov.py lossless jpeg editing? If not it might be best to to the intermediate steps with png. Just in case you didn't think of the loss jpegs recompression each time. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:01, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hmmm... I checked it with SciPy, it is indeed lossy. I'll fix it; thanks for the heads-up! InverseHypercube 03:42, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hehe, annoying, but good that I decided to ask you. ;-) I see the script is just newly created - so you probably didn't use it for many pics, did you? If you go for png there just may be a problem in case of color profiles or 32bit jpeg or useful EXIF data. Probably not the case here. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 04:02, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Saw your change. "convert %s -append output.png" is only done once (only one save), right? There you could use jpeg - it might be even better for these artwork repros (thumbnail sharpening by mediawiki + smaller filesize). Add "-quality 100" in case of output.jpg (it should use the best quality then = nearly no loss). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 04:07, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- I tried doing that but only 29% of the pixels are left intact. Is this fine? InverseHypercube 04:38, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Well, you could also upload the pngs and hopefully at some time in the future it will be adjustable if sharpening should be done - also for pngs. I did test it myself now: quality 100 is not really the least possible compression. In GIMP there is a better jpeg quality available (quality 100 + no chroma subsampling) which results in much less errors compared to convert's "quality 100" - but I couldn't find that for convert. So go for png for no loss. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:43, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Okay thanks. Do you think jpg versions should be deleted? InverseHypercube 17:45, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Can - but don't need. E.g. for most/all(?) NARA images we have tiff + jpeg. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 20:06, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Dear POTY-voter, some helpful people made us aware of a mistake in our candidate list. We regret the inconvenience.
- File:1944 NormandyLST.jpg was listed as a candidate but was never featured.
- File:1944 NormandyLST clean.jpg was a Featured Picture on Commons.
- Now, the only Featured Picture remaining is File:Into the Jaws of Death 23-0455M edit.jpg
Therefore we will add your vote to Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/R1/Into the Jaws of Death 23-0455M edit.jpg after voting is over, if you do not disagree and it is not yet there. If you don't want to have your vote transferred, visit Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/R1/1944 NormandyLST clean.jpg and remove your vote, either by editing the page and removing exactly the line containing your username or clicking the button.

Le Voyage dans la lune colour
[edit]http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Le_Voyage_dans_la_lune_colour.ogv
This 1902 film might be public domain. However is the color restored version public domain or is it copyrighted by Lobster Films? I'm interested in using this file for YouTube and other projects but I'm skeptical if this particular version is indeed PD. Oudler (talk) 01:38, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
- Well, Méliès did create the colour version, so if there was any copyright to claim it would be solely on the restoration. As far as I know, restorations do not qualify for new copyright. This is not a legal document, but [4] provides some information. InverseHypercube 15:57, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Uploads from http://www.lindahessmiller.com
[edit]Hello, your bot has been uploading photos from http://www.lindahessmiller.com (for instance, File:Apulo_1990_21.jpg). The source website prominently states that the images are under copyright. Nick-D (talk) 04:10, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Look at the home page. There is a CC BY notice. InverseHypercube 04:11, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Also, Creative Commons photographs are still copyrighted, unless they're under CC0. InverseHypercube 04:13, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- The source for each of images very clearly states that they're under copyright, and the photos are currently marked with a copyright watermark. For instance; http://www.lindahessmiller.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=207&pid=6290. I think that these need to be deleted. Nick-D (talk) 07:34, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Again, copyright and Creative Commons licenses are not mutually exclusive. She has explicitly licensed all of her website under CC BY; that does not mean that the photos are not copyrighted, but it does mean that they can be used on Commons. InverseHypercube 07:39, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I don't think that's at all tenable. The front page of the website says only "This work by Linda Hess Miller is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License", and then all of the photos are clearly marked with very prominent copyright notices (no CC license appears on these pages), which include a copyright watermark and an explicit statement that asks that the photo not be reproduced without her permission. Given that there's a bot involved here, I've raised this at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Bot appears to be uploading copyright protected images. Hello, can you by any chance give a look at this bot work request? Thanks, Nemo 10:39, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hello,
- Sorry I missed this message. I don't know much about interlaced JPGs though. InverseHypercube 06:11, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Wanna trade?
[edit]I noticed you have a camera in Vancouver. I have one in Edmonton. Can we take pictures for each other for articles? I may do an article on the sculptor that did the concrete lions at the w:Stanley Park end of the bridge. I couldn't find any decent ones with a free licence. If I remember is is either easiest to walk to from Lost Lagoon or the seawall below it. I also hope to get out in Ed. in the spring and hopefully create and article on public sculptures here. w:List of attractions and monuments in Stanley Park has some pretty lame images and could use a few more.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:44, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hello,
- I'm busy with school at the moment, but it is a good idea, thanks. Did you look on Flickr though? There are many free images of the lion statues (http://www.flickr.com/photos/goldberg/216630342/, http://www.flickr.com/search/?l=commderiv&ss=2&ct=6&mt=all&adv=1&w=all&q=lions+gate+bridge+statue&m=text). InverseHypercube 06:09, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
- Have I been using flickr search incorrectly? I just click the search 'The Commons' for free licence images. I did find a better one that didn't show in search that way, but did have a free licence.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:38, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, the Commons is a different thing, it's for images donated from several institutions (muesums, etc.) To search all of Flickr for Creative Commons-licensed files, go to Advanced Search and check off all the sections in the Creative Commons section. Thank you. I just spotted that and found some more.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:08, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File:1337 Part 3.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File tagging File:1337 Part 3.png
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:1337 Part 3.png.
Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).
- In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
- 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
- In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
- In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Hey. I cannot find any proof that these images uploaded by your bot are under CC license. The source is of course given, but I don't see any CC claims there. Could you please take a look. Thanks. Masur (talk) 09:16, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hello. The homepage says they are licensed under CC-BY, which she added after I sent her an email. InverseHypercube 09:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- I believe it's not enough, as the text explicitely says "This work" (meaning the current page) and not all the content. Like at least it's not unambiguous. Masur (talk) 07:57, 26 August 2014 (UTC) ps. and please reply at my discussion page, as I really don't want to dig through my history to check who I discuss with and whether the reply was posted. Thanks.
- OTRS would be the best. And if you could run your bot to correct permission= field to indicate both OTRS ticket and the link you've given to me, then I think there will be no doubts. Masur (talk) 11:04, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- The home page has a CC-BY notice, but the source page for this image has a clear copyright notice and a copyright watermark, see http://www.lindahessmiller.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=217&pid=10040. A copyright notice on a particular page always overrules a free license on a home page. OTRS permission from Miller, or her removing both the copyright notice from the page and the watermark is required. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:04, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
- Okay. I sent her an email to clarify, and will send to OTRS as soon as I hear back. InverseHypercube 04:26, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
- Note that the e-mail to OTRS should come directly from Miller, not forwarded by you. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 16:11, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
- Commons:OTRS says forwarding is fine. In any case, I've gotten the permission and sent it to OTRS. Once it's processed I'll get the bot to change add the permission to the files. InverseHypercube 01:57, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- I, and many other OTRS volunteers, don't like forwarded permissions because they are very easy to forge. However, given the depth of your WMF record, I've accepted this one. It's ticket 2014091610002391. I have not added the tags because you said your bot can do it. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:17, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, I see, thank you! I'll try to get the tags done on the weekend. InverseHypercube 04:42, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Commons bot inactivity
[edit]Hello!
Your bot has been listed at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 5 as being inactive for over two years. As a housekeeping measure we'd like to remove the bot flag from inactive bot accounts, unless you expect the bot will be operated again in the near future. If you wish for your bot to retain it's bot flag, please speak up on the deflag page. If you consent to the removal of the bot flag (or do not reply on the deflag page) you can re-request the bot flag at Commons:Bots/Requests should you need it again. Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
