Hi. Could you look at this please.--Mohamed0 (talk) 14:18, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem.--Mohamed (talk) 16:27, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting week, what buttons can you push here and there?

[edit]

I am a strong girl (it was the name of the building I loved the most at my college, actually) and for the most part, my emotions are fairly level. This has been a really long week and the Plant Project people have been enjoying the week as well, deleting my articles and also allowing the musical comedy experts edit them with a stronger administrative hand than I have.

Can you push any big buttons to make it stop. There is a point where musical comedy stops being funny and fun. I also don't like what I see as a campaign of destruction dedicated to me asking that yet another person who is not as educated as me, not as even tempered as me and without as much image experience as me be my boss here and over me and what I do. I just think it is time that a button or two get pushed and some people blocked for a week or so on another wikipedia, if you can do that. The cartoons I love - a good website which I am familiar with. The rest of it I need help with! What is happening, where, what has been deleted, by whom, why. If the plant appears natively in those places then it is "Flora of xxx" to me - why would it not be?
Pretty busy in RL at present so be patient please (by which I mean both with me & others :)) I'm certainly looking though. --Herby talk thyme 07:14, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had a headache the other day and scrolled through several of them; the laughing didn't actually improve the headache though. I was actually being kind of careful with that one, btw. Some of the others I have pasted here and there are, well, if the people are always the same, then they were really good and I am still laughing about some of them:
They are some of the objects of my camera envy (not Calibas -- I understand that users reviews)....
The editors of the Gilbert and Sullivan articles are being confused by botany articles and having them deleted at wikipedia. A math article was deleted because the mathematical language used in it was potentially a copyright violation -- a language which is shared by every single book that attempts to talk about mathematics in the language that has been developed to talk about mathematics. There seems to be many a Microsoft developer involved. Usually I mean people who write software, but in this case, I mean it is people who like to make people repeat things -- perhaps for no reason. With the mathematics article, I was at a point with that in which I needed to find someone else who knew LaTeX to see if all of the that was working right or if it was a problem I was having.
I would point to the article to have some of the new bot authors here make the bots so they were not undoing their own work and things like that. I used it to communicate with User:Rocket000 and User:Multichill the latter of the two was telling me today to remake deleted categories. I haven't said anything to rocket000 lately.
An effort to dumb things down is more efficiently done by promoting the good people when they should have. I am sorry I am not having a real life and editing here instead. I enjoyed real life once; not much of that is in California and the situation that put me here is very unreal as well. Until then, I edit away because I don't think that the world can work well if it has to be dumbed down so the people in charge of things understand it.
On the otherhand, throughout this ordeal, I have seen some of the finest of eloquence in explaining the problems and at the same while, helping other people. I don't think that everyone at the top is as dumb as things are being made here lately.... -- carol (talk) 07:55, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here deleted have been many Category:Flora of and at en en:Unlimited Register Machine <-- I made that compute x2 22 years ago. It is a language with only four instructions. It was cool then -- no big deal now. -- carol (talk) 07:59, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK Carol - all our brains are wired differently I'm pleased to say. I have been told that I am hard to understand at times (never quite sure how to take such comments) however I am at a loss to know quite what you are after here.
What is the issue with the proposed or deleted categories & where is some discussion about it?
Wikipedia is a madhouse which I will certainly avoid even for you I'm afraid. Any time I go there for a visit I remember just how much I love Commons :) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:12, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To the best of my knowledge there was no discussion. Just deletion along with the suggestion that I redo all of that work. The categories here and the article there. I think that those two sets of deletion were related to each other yet, I have nothing that can show that definitely. I love the commons also, except for those times when I hate it. Does there have to have been a discussion of whether or not categories should be deleted for deleted categories to be a fact?
Sorry about your wiring.... -- carol (talk) 10:23, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - the most recent two categories you created recently that I can see deleted are "Flora of South Pacific" & "Fauna of Central America". These were both deleted based on the fact that they were empty. Personally I do not always delete empty categories but it is a valid reason & others do so.
However they do not relate to Category:Santolina rosmarinifolia apparently so am I missing something?
I can honestly say I see no relationship between category deletions here and teh page you created on en wp - they really are far apart from one another in my mind. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:38, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion images

[edit]

Hello, I would like to know why you deleted all the image I forward about the company West End Watch & Co (logo and pictures of Wew watches)? Maybe I must change my username to recuperate these images ? I had the same problem on en.wiki because my username was linked to the company's name WESTENDWATCH. So shall I ask for changing my username WestEnd in Cindy1983 ? Waiting for your instructions.

en.wiki admin needed

[edit]

Hi. Just came across Image:Earhart-electra 10.jpg which has been transfered from en:Image:Earhart-electra_USAF.jpg without the info. Since it's now deleted on en.wiki I can't fix the info so I decided to stalk an en.wiki admin =) Hopefully Global deleted image review will take care of these issues in the future. Thanks /Lokal_Profil 00:47, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It will be later today but I'll go look. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 06:54, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, got caught up in stuff! The license is the same as the en wp one was, I've copied the description & the original uploader info. Anything else needed? Regards --Herby talk thyme 06:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adapted images

[edit]

I usually deal with Brynn but she seems to have gone away for a while. I have a question on copyright. What is the copyright situation for an illustration that is adapted from one in a publication. Are there any general rules? Is this permitted? Thanks. Granitethighs (talk) 03:40, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With the good wishes that HT is having an enjoyable real life, can I ask you some questions about your question? Can you be more specific about what you mean by "adapted" as used in this case? How old is the publication as well, it might be not an issue if the publication is old enough. I have a little experience with copyright stuff, but not enough to determine what you mean by this description. -- carol (talk) 06:29, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Carol's comments are sound. I am also no licensing expert so I would suggest that checking here would be the best idea (& asking on the talk page maybe). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 06:56, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images from Flickr deleted

[edit]

Hello, you deleted images I downloaded from Flickr. These pics are clearly free (1859-1910 photographs) and are provided by the Bibliothèque de Toulouse. But I suppose I didn't downloaded them correctly (and I don't know how to do!). They come from the same initial location as these: thumb thumb thumb thumb --Morburre (talk) 12:26, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - the Flickr review clearly states that "Flickr review NOT passed: Author is using NC, ND, or all rights reserved". I do find it a bit odd as they are obviously fairly old photos. I'll see what I can find & if you do the same please (I'll ask the reviewer too).
I'll certainly undelete them if we cannot agree about it so please do not be concerned :) Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:35, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And restored all - I think you are correct & I'm checking. Please accept my apologies :( --Herby talk thyme 12:39, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

help with explanations of the environment

[edit]

I have been blocked at english wikipedia. Aggression was shown to me. Stalking my edits was done, not me stalking the edits of others. I am at a loss to understand the problem; would you be able to explain it to me? -- carol (talk) 09:54, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking Carol but it does not look like a five minute job given the number of postings involved. More later - stay cool for now. --Herby talk thyme 10:06, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you know, one of the users there who is very keen on blocking me, did not exist here until I entered my version of the wright flyer into the Featured Pictures thing. It is an interesting community where asking a person claiming to have great abilities or great software questions about it seems to get votes towards the askers being blocked. Votes that get counted from unreal people who did not exist before a certain date.
"Like flys on a turd" -- carol (talk) 11:18, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - let's divide this into two. You & Wikipedia

Wikipedia

I need to be rather careful with my words here! The project is amazing. The atmosphere, behaviours, attitudes leaves a lot to be desired as far as I am concerned. I edit there as little as I can while watching what interests me & helping a little.

It fascinates me (genuinely) that such a necessarily collaborative project can be so combative. What is about folks at computers that allows them to be so rude, uncaring, unhelpful as some there are. I "left" there almost two years ago because I found the atmosphere impossible. I stayed away for a long time &, only when I saw I could help out (the blacklist) did I put a toe back in the water. In particular the attitude of many admins there is, frankly, appalling. Ok - it is just me - but admins are there to help & should take responsibility for their actions. I often do not see that. As people other than you & me do seem to read this page I'll say no more :)

You - aka Carol Spears

Well you see - I have no problems with you being around. However reading the en wp pages many folk do not see you as contributing positively to the project. It is a subject area that I know little about & I have always found the maxim "Better to say nothing & be thought a fool than to open your mouth & remove all reasonable doubt"!

Editing these projects can only be done through consensus & collaboration. You believe you are correct however others do not. There is only you as far as I can see on your side. I think it is sad that they have blocked you but I really do not see how anything could really be done about it I'm afraid. Maybe bide your time for a while (working constructively here) and then appeal I guess.

I do feel I should point out that others here also disagree with you and so I would urge you to stay away from controversial stuff and help out with the many task that always need doing here. You have a real value as a person in this world however, in life, we need to interact with each other in a good way. If that interaction fails to satisfy then leave it alone maybe. Take care & be careful! Regards --Herby talk thyme 11:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy is an easy invention. The goings on at wikipedia are a good example of that. As Hesperian wrote on my talk page "he did not keep an eye on the 'drama boards'". Slaunger is making my Ecozones project into a controversy here. "Anyone can edit at wikipedia" but only a few have the tools and access to prevent the invention of "controversy".
I saw my name mentioned here. I do not see myself trying to make a controversy out of your ecozones project. As I have stated several times I think the ecozone work is valuable and the clickbale maps are a great addition to Commons. We have difference of opinions whether categories should be called "Flora of..." of "Plants of..." which I figured out when I saw one of my edits being reverted without explanation. So instead of enganging in edit warring over that I have posted two threads on COM:VP to seek community consensus and do things right. I will follow whatever will be the decision there. So, I do not agree that I am trying to make a project a controversy. I am trying to help integrate it in the existing project by involving relevant stakeholders and seeking consensus. -- Slaunger (talk) 23:06, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. -- carol (talk) 11:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Stick around here Carol. There is always plenty to do & Commons folk are pretty good most of the time. Maybe avoid anything others find controversial for a while to allow yourself some time to breath. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:22, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How many musical comedians need to have administrative approval here before it is over? -- carol (talk) 07:05, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll assume that one is dealt with & he has apologised. While your experience of en wp has not been pleasant for you Carol please do not allow it to spill over into Commons. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:16, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I missed the apology, and I apologize for that. Missing the apology leaves me much in the same position that I was in with the exception that now I am doing the homework based on a similarity of user names between the two wiki's. The sarcasm of "flies to a turd" in this case, that turd did not stink so much. Not letting the problems spill over to here -- that means not letting a different user get away with using the same User name here, or what?
The challenge to not let it spill here is an interesting one, eh? -- carol (talk) 07:21, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well it is possible I'm missing something but Hesperian was one of the people speaking out in support of you on en wp when I last looked. Challenges can be interesting & rewarding. --Herby talk thyme 07:24, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nudge

[edit]

It had been bothering me for some time. I'm a bit occupied with other stuff off wiki, that's why I didn't react yet. Maybe we could install a no-vote period of 11 days (one day more than needed for a new nomination) for new users to discourage this kind of voters, though persistent abusers wouldn't be stopped? I'll get back to you to night with some suspect names maybe for CU. Cheers. Lycaon (talk) 14:36, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

kaltenbrunner image

[edit]

Hello Herbythyme. That image was never uploaded before and it was never deleted. I merely uploaded a different image to that name so it was easier to track. What I will do is upload the images under a different name because people assume that the image was deleted prior when it truly was not. It was a completely different image. I just used the same name to upload it under. Zarbon (talk) 13:04, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now, now :)

[edit]

You don't really think I'd bring it up if I hadn't looked into it first, do you :-)? Anyway, I don't think we want to get back in the habit of tolerating consistently abusive users... I saw a few more talk page/discussion forum messages just now that really raise some red flags with me. As you and I have seen twice before, the work of one good contributor can usually be done just as well or better by a large pack (or herd, if you prefer) of good collaborators.

Cell phone's in my pocket ;-). --SB_Johnny | talk 13:39, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RL is an issue at present. Also take a look at the header :) After that maybe. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:46, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Herby, in order not to repeat "thank you" several times, here goes at once, thanks for:

  • your "new admin" message
  • closing the vote
  • taking care of updating the lists of administrators for me (lol)
  • your kind words in the vote
  • the influence you had in making my request the "overwhelming" consensus as PatríciaR called it (even though I wouldn't go that far! for me it was at most an obvious consensus)
  • the future help I am sure you will give me should I need any assistance.

Cheers! --Waldir talk 14:19, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Waldir. Happy to help (although I was an hour early!). I like Commons & (mostly :)) I like people who like Commons. It is good to have the help. Regards --Herby talk thyme 14:58, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My image uploads

[edit]

How do you edit some of my images just an hour or so after they've been uploaded? Is there like a special watchlist thing...? bsrboy (talk) 16:59, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! bsrboy (talk) 18:21, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask just a quick favour (on English Wikipedia). You see the logo used on this webpage http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/coatofarms is it the same as the image I uploaded on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Plymouth_City_Council_logo.gif . I keep uploading a new version of it to replace it and then hard refreshing, but it doesn't seem to work. bsrboy (talk) 18:43, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image still appears as the old image (the one where it says "City of Plymouth" underneath, as seen in the bottom right corner of Plymouth City Council website), but it has the right dimension, so it appears squashed and distorted, however these dimension change and go back to the old dimensions when I click on the image itself and it links me to the meta wiki. I tried deleting all my temporary internet files twice now, but it doesn't do anything. The last time I tried it, I noticed something odd: When I viewed the page on Plymouth it took a little bit of time for the images to download, as normal, but I scrolled down to the Plymouth City Council logo and it was already loaded, as if it hadn't been deleted from my computer? bsrboy (talk) 11:19, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

YES! It works! I used the template:purge, clicked and then did a hard refresh (ctrl+F5) of the purge. :) bsrboy (talk) 11:29, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

sockpuppets

[edit]

I am able to edit at English wikipedia but not as my user name. I made a third user name (my other one is a miss-spelling of the word consensus) en:User:Spears, Carol <-- that url is to the edit history. My first edit was reverted and my preferred user account was splattered with a sock puppet template. Which, if I remember correctly, I put there to begin with and was removed by an admin....

I am here for an opinion. Is "Spears, Carol" such a good disguise for a sockpuppet for my instance there? -- carol (talk) 02:36, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two more things, probably not related but might be. I "hacked" a couple of web sites when I first got online -- it wasn't because I wanted to hack the sites, it was because I was trying to use them while doing what the web sites were supposed to be doing. And the other thing, I seem to be able to do and "see" a lot more things here lately. I kind of appreciate that and don't know who to thank. -- carol (talk) 03:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The first bit. Posting something like that on wiki is not your wisest move Carol - using another account to avoid a block is wrong I'm afraid.
See more? What do you mean? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:17, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My IP was unblocked but the Username remained blocked. I used the new incidence to mention that. I did not like editing with the IP. The block on the IP was announced when it expired. I like my edit history there.
The tools are cool. They are confusing, but they are cool.
Thanks for getting back with me on this, I think. -- carol (talk) 07:33, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

bored

[edit]

I am bored with all of the discussing what to me is obvious and inbetween two tasks. Have you ever heard the actual LP version which was the opening to Basketball Jones? -- carol (talk) 08:53, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LPs I'm familiar with, Basketball Jones I'm not (if it is a film I rarely watch them :)). Bear in mind we are separated (I imagine) by a rather large body of water. --Herby talk thyme 09:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
1973, Cheech and Chong. It was before "Parental Advisories" were put on media of this type and I listened to my parents LP over and over again. The song was quite popular in its day with many a musician contributing to it. en:Los Cochinos. I have been reviewing the stuff I watched and listened to when I was a kid to see if it harmed me in any way. The song is about a kid that loves to play basketball so much, it is kind of a sweet song for having a parental advisory slapped on it and from coming from the likes of Cheech and Chong. The opening is quite funny -- even without the song to follow. I can put them both online but the opening is the rarer of the two. They interview the basketball players coach and make fun of United States network television sports programs at the same time. There is very little about this that is politically correct, btw. It is just a little exaggeration from totally accurate though. I am going to put them online, but the opening for the song is most definitely the rarer of the two. -- carol (talk) 09:49, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I gotta say, that as far as harming me goes -- when I was in my twenties and cocaine was an option, the words from "Up His Nose" came back to me, stripped of its bigotry with only the message about a boy who put trains and boats and large expensive things up his nose. I was surprised when I listened to it again how really racist it was (with stereotyped Jewish doctors and things). Dangerous stuff!! Good thing they put that warning on it for the next few generations of kiddies!

Hi, I recently scanned the box of a Bandai Playdia and uploaded the logo to the commons, I was unaware that this was a copyright violation. How would I go about adding the logo to the Playdia article? Im not very clued up with the licenses, should all logos be uploaded as fair use? Thanks. Incog88 (talk) 17:18, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herby,
how comes that Image:ApresentadoresQTT.png is there again? Did User:FifthMore re-upload it or was it undeleted? This user may be a case for Patricia. --Túrelio (talk) 10:58, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Open proxies, school, etc

[edit]

Good day Herby! I just wanted to leave a note regarding open proxies, school ip's and that kind of stuff. I'm wondering how I can identify a ip to be a open proxy, or owned by a school just as an example. I know those buttons that are below a ip user talk but I just doesn't understand what I do with the result. Any help would be nice. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 18:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Getting ready to go away so no real time. I always check en wp user page as that often has more info that anywhere else. Depending the security of your machine there are bits of software available. However there is always the possibility of compromising your own machine while checking for exploits on other ones. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 19:02, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You mean antivirus software and that kind of protection? I hope you have a nice week, when you come back please answer the question if you don't mind. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 19:11, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not gone yet - just very busy. Nothing to do with AV. At the very minimum you need a correctly configured hardware firewall that you understand. Probably Linux would be even better (with the firewall still). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really use linux, but I do have a cd of the latest version. I was just wondering why do I need the security, all I need to know is how to find open proxies, school ip's, etc for example ip 999.222.333 starts vandalizing. I then can't find out if it's a school ip, open proxy, or just someone with their own pc at home. Oh it's good to hear you're not gone yet! Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 08:17, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The IP is always attached to a location and that location is known. On linux "whois" typically gives the mail address of the owner.
Sorry to interrupt here. HT is sometimes asked questions that I either know the answer of or can steer to finding the answer of. -- carol (talk) 08:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You could try this, this or this. They vary but will give more info. It needs to be interpreted with care though. --Herby talk thyme 08:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but you get so much information, I'm not sure what the information is helping me. If you've got any tips about it then that would be nice. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 11:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to bother again Herby but in other words, I'm wondering what to do with the whois. I get the information, but don't understand what I need to look after, I really don't understand it. Hope you have a good holiday tomorrow, the mountains in Norway are great! Well that's my opinion after beeing there just right now. --Kanonkas(talk) 19:50, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good to see you back, I see I need to use "nmap" to find open proxies, Mike.lifeguard told me how to do it but if you have some info that would be nice. --Kanonkas(talk) 20:25, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure no problem. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 11:58, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there

[edit]

Hey, just poking you to let you know I'm alive and feeling fine :P Actually I'm slightly bored so I'm going to have a go at geocoding your images - hope you don't mind. Don't worry I won't nominate at FPC/QI/VI.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:36, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've actually started getting them done myself now. I'll probably try and get the rest done when I'm back. As to FP etc - if you poke about one did go in - so that will never happen again! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 06:58, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you have a good time wherever it its you are off too - I'm off myself about when you get back for a similar amount of time. Ouch on the FPC, a sunset picture has as much chance of passing as an 1-day old editor with 50 edits one of which was rv'ed as vandalism on enwp RFA, and to have one nominated by someone else is evil. "Overexposed, underexposed...", who writes that junk? The fixable problem with the image is barrel distortion, but typically you (as the creator) haven't been told what the distortion is in context, or how you can correct/avoid it in future - its a tedious post-processing task, I can give details if you want.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:31, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When I'm back it would be great. There is a clue at the top of the page :) --Herby talk thyme 10:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have a good time :)--Nilfanion (talk) 10:37, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have a good one yourself. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:16, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have a great time :)--Paloma Walker (talk) 22:40, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that!

[edit]

Thanks for your comment in my RfA. Truth be told, I spent a good hour or so trying to figure out who I should ask to nominate me--you, Giggy, and Shakata have all been huge helps in my time here. But since I couldn't choose one and a triple co-nom seemed a little bit excessive, I decided to just bite the bullet and do it myself :) --jonny-mt 23:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seriously - no worries - as I said on another one I prefer self noms all in all (& do not see them as power seeking mostly). They often indicate that someone has learnt enough to feel that further tools would be useful & that they have the maturity to take responsibility for their own actions. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 06:47, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

complicated question or ignorant situation

[edit]

I am not certain what I have here, so the choice is yours and if you can share your decision on if this is a complicated question or an ignorant situation, I would appreciate it and will probably opt for your decision of which definition! :)

There is a user who more than 50% of their edits here is to undo edits of mine and lately putting my name into the edit summary even. There is an old technicality being presented as the reason for this -- however, the same "technicality" exists for several similar areas I have been working on yet, no interest in maintaining a commons-wide order there.

It started with an old "trick" of not communicating and also erasing every attempt I made to communicate. I actually showed this user how to do things the correct way, and not unlike I have seen at other wiki (where the user is much more active, btw) that action was filled with interested people and closed within hours.

I consider it an ignorant situation because it has the smell of spillage from a wiki which is filled with administrative dysfunction (unless you consider the detective work and deductive thinking it took to determine that "User:Spears, Carol" was a sock of "User:CarolSpears" to be the work of a functional administration) -- it might be a complicated question though because there is also the chance that it is a user instance that is being shared by administrators. Checkuser can only find the computer. Having an account on a university computer or a work place computer and having access to it -- checkuser cannot determine that, can it?

The main problem I would like to point out though is that 50% or more of that users contributions are to revert my edits in a situation where they are not interested in doing the same for all of the similar problems.

Also, I am glad you are back. I was also going to scold for nominating/supporting SB Jonny, but I got my "jonny" mixed up. The first one mentioned told me on two different occassions that real life was too busy right now. They are different users, right?

Sorry, this time it is not a real headache interrupting my efforts and making me write here. I am not sorry about the headache, but I am sorry I am here for ignorant and flakey reasons. -- carol (talk) 06:42, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok - well you have me puzzled. Who is reverting your edits & placing your name in the edit summary? Hard to review anything without that info.
Checkuser has its limits and is by no means foolproof. However when people exhibit the same behaviour from the same IP then it may well be that they are coordinating their activities or are the same person. Again I would need more info to check on this (& if it is on en wp I would not be able to do so as I do not have CU access there - you would need to go to ArbCom or whatever process they have there).
As to Johnny/jonny - they certainly are two people with very different languages skills in very different timezone. jonny (ja) seems a very competent Commons user who interacts well.
I should probably inform you that Johnny (the other one) is a wikimedian who has influenced & taught me much. I was a refugee from en wp well over a year ago and arrived at en wb. I discovered a good community & the fact that not all admins were the same as the ones I had experienced on en wp (a main reason for me leaving there). Johnny was that person. He was the first to nominate me for any rights (although I declined) and we have worked collaboratively together ever since. He introduced me to Commons and is someone I have the highest respect for. --Herby talk thyme 12:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I started here and encountered JSB mostly at wikipedia. My respect is healthy in that it waned some in the last few weeks and should have. I was blocked for saying that one of the commons photographers probably lived with his mom. When I was younger, I went back to live with my mom who was also in a situation where she had gone back to live with her mom and that one (my grandma) her mom was dead so it is hard to say if she might have been living with her or not had the circumstance been different. Months ago, I did not have any problems when accusing the same photographer of being Eurotrash here, so the situation seems wrong and anti-fun in many ways.
Carols Eurotrash comment did not pass so unnoticed in my opinion, and shortly following that, the photographer in question withdrew all his QICs. The withdawal comments indicated frustration with the review comments. I did learn though, that carol thinks it is OK, to call her "park trailer trash". -- Slaunger (talk) 13:36, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Trailer Park Trash -->8 to 10 years in one. To make it worse, it was miles away from anywhere, the internet was a long distance phone call. It was in the middle of a corn field and the reason it existed at all (I think) is because it was a swamp and no crops would grow there. I learned gardening with raised beds. I miss living there, it was also very beautiful with nothing around for miles and miles. It is the reason I love the wildflowers. Also, I don't remember withdrawal of photographs then, I remember many more beautiful ones after that. The flies! The hover flies and the fly flies! I had a problem earlier with those and they ceased and started to be uploaded to a different web site and I felt badly then; I still do. -- carol (talk) 13:57, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
With the exception of Juiced lemon and SBJ. I felt very wrong about that situation as I feel now about it. It is the kind of wrong that makes me think that SBJ and JL are the same user, actually. My respect usually does not wane until there is a complicated justification system working which is not logical and when the requirements made on one person are not equal to the requirements made for others. SBJ is no exception to this, nor should anyone be.
That user SBJ did tell me in two different exchanges that real life was honestly busy for that user right now. That has nothing to do with my respect, only more for the suggestion that it is not a good time to expand duties on any wiki.
The question asked "When 50% of the edits from one user are to undo the edits of another user?" should not need the display of actual people involved to answer. It is not about personalities, is it?
A confession: I am not particularly fond of Pink Floyd and I say that as one who heard Dark Side of the Moon from the original pressing (I think my parents had a radio station issue of this). I was very young and did not like this vinyl and as an adult I do not dislike it as much but am not particularly fond of it. I have had the same experience with cauliflower but not with cooked cabbage -- where I disliked it as a child and continued to not really like it as an adult. Derek and the Dominoes, same thing. First pressing disc, real dislike of the music. -- carol (talk) 19:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The idea that SBJ & JL are the same person are frankly laughable Carol. Maybe it is merely that I have known both considerably longer than you have.
You ask me for my views on "someone reverting 50% of your edits". However you fail to tell me where or who - without that information any views I have would be fairly uninformed. --Herby talk thyme 12:32, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, that is interesting then. Perhaps I need to understand the situation in which personalities are more important than simple facts. I apologize if that seems sarcastic, I assure you that it isn't (we simply do not have that kind of relationship). I am honest to report that I cannot determine a situation in which one personality would be allowed to make aggressive edits and another personality not be allowed. So, perhaps the outline of a situation where the personality matters when it comes to aggressive edits, typed here, to illuminate this dark administrative corner for me? Rules and procedures are interesting things: I once got a ticket for carrying a watergun that looked too much like a real gun. As soon as the officer explained to me that toy guns that look like real guns are dangerous in other situations, I completely understood the problem. Until the explanation, it never occurred to me that there were other not so nice applications for such a toy. I did not really need that ticket, I just needed to be told of these darker situations. Such is this request. I simply cannot imagine a situation where a personality mattered when it is about aggressive editing. -- carol (talk) 12:46, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but I can't "see" the toy gun. Point me to some edits & I can give you a view.
I see some edits as aggressive towards me - maybe they are, maybe they are not. Others take such edits as normal. That does not make anyone right or wrong, it is merely our personal perception of the situation. If I find such people I try and avoid putting myself in a position of having to deal with them or take a break from the situation rather than inflame it.
Simple facts are rarely just that. Simple facts in connection with personalities are almost never just that. Our world views are coloured by so many things. Some of these learnt perceptions are extremely useful, some can be handicaps in our interactions.
However you are a scientist & I stopped being one of them many years ago :) --Herby talk thyme 12:54, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Christopher Craddock

[edit]

I just tried to create a category:Christopher Craddock for the ww1 admiral of that name. I get a message saying it has been protected please see the admin who did it. As best I can see, the last person logged as editing the page was yourself. Can you unprotect it, or should I think of a name variant? most admorals seem to be listed just under their common name without titles etc. Sandpiper (talk) 23:17, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, scratch that. Figured out I was trying to create a page by mistake, not a cat. Sandpiper (talk) 23:21, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check out Commons:Changing username/Current requests; you've been signing everything twice. That thing autosigns for you when you subst, so you don't need to add the tildes. —Giggy 10:35, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

grrr, bugger, thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:38, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, maybe a dumb question, but does the incomprehensible name of this unlicensed image make it eligible for deletion? Don't think I have ever seen anything like it.--Paloma Walker (talk) 20:55, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The name is not an issue (particularly!) though often the rather random named files are a licensing issue. As is so often the case it is more "scope". The band gets just 6 google hits at present (their you-tube stuff). As such they would be non notable on any wiki project and we have enough "ordinary" band images for now. I've left them a note. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:19, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your old edit

[edit]

Wait, you are really a sysop? How come you "welcomed" a user in march 07 when it was very clear that he only edited for 4 days in mid december the previous year? I cannot help but LOLing at your ineptitude. You truly are the commons favorite!

Sub-cats

[edit]

Thanks for your message about sub-cats. As for adding my "sub-cat", without calling it a sub-cat, do you mean I should add it to the existing category "Campbelltown"? Have always wondered about the etiquette of adding something to a gallery started by someone else. Do I just proceed by adding my contribution to the Campbelltown gallery existing now?

Slave/bsrboy

[edit]

Herby, I know you checked these two out. Is there any other related accounts to permaban? I just got mail bombed by this user with 58 copies of "I'm gonna rape you in the ass". Which is always amusing to me, because Gmail sticks them all in the same thread so it took me two clicks to remove... Oh and I upgraded both the users bans to all options (aka no email either) and indef protected both their user pages. Thanks --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:37, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing I can see at present. Let me know if/when you want me to take another look, cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My photos

[edit]

Please, look them and delete them /phots/? --Mariánko (talk) 12:36, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken a look and deleted a few. You may be correct that you feel them not to be of high quality but the larger ones may be of use to people in the absence of better ones? Please bear in mind that once freely licensed to Commons they cease to be "your" photographs and it is really a matter for the community to decide. You may be best to place a deletion request for those that you feel are not required but remember teh community may not agree with you. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:57, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Can you deleted this (only selected) photos, please? In my opinion, this photos have not a medium standard. They have only below. Thanks. --Marián 2 (talk) 12:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have deleted all the ones that I feel able to. To delete the rest you will need to open a deletion request. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:03, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

bot malfunction

[edit]

Hey Herby, the bot malfunction you reported on my talk page User_talk:Dschwen#Bot_malfunction.3F was quite a puzzler for me. I asked around and found an open bugreport. It was most likely related to a database malfunction. --Dschwen (talk) 22:34, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
