Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Please note that if you won't provide a valid license in 7 days your image will be deleted and if you upload a lot of images without licenses you may be blocked from editing wikimedia-commons. Thank you.

But it has got a license... bsrboy 13:24, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi
[edit]Good to see the Devon uploads. Can you take a look at categories. I'm trying to keep the "Devon" top one as clear as possible & just put relevant media in the sub cats. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:07, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- Cheers - one of those "too many/too few" category arguments. The trouble is if the Devon one gets too big then it becomes harder for folk to use/find what they want. --Herby talk thyme 17:39, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well - at the moment Plymouth is a sub cat of Devon. Equally Torbay is too but this is a wiki....
- To me (looking at any of the county cats) they tend to be used as a dumping ground by folk who know roughly what they are after. I actually find it quite satisfying sorting it out & making new cats where there seems enough media or it is "important" enough.
- I've been working on the Cornwall gallery & plan to take a stab at Devon next week (away for a few days). Don't bother with the Galleries v. Cats argument (:)) - folk need a simple page that gives a taster & some details in cats for more depth - by that is only my opinion! Pretty much all UK counties require a fair amount of work so if you happen to be bored......... Go to "gadgets" in preferences & enable "Hot cat" - makes it easy - cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:09, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- btw - may help - cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:51, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Nice work & I see you got Hot Cat going - great for that sort of thing. If you are sticking around here (& it would be good) there is plenty to do for UK counties alone. If you have any thoughts feel free to let me know - cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:21, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Corrupt image
[edit]Hi - no idea but it does happen from time to time I know - I've deleted it anyway so maybe give it a go again? Cheers--Herby talk thyme 15:52, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Only one image :)
[edit]Yep - there is a bot that "watches" categories. So I have two watchlists - one local (though I need to rename it) and one national. Info is here. Great way of keeping an eye on categories. If you want a hand setting anything up feel free to let me know. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:34, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- I guess you fixed your issue. Looks ok now. I have broadband on "treacle" speed today which is so much fun :(
- One or two points. Bryan's bot run on en wp too so you can use it to watch categories (& threads on talk pages using the other bot) there too. It really is so useful.
- Commons cats - the bots is great for picking up images "dumped" in high level cats that could do with some refining. There is a tendency for the higher level cat to become very over populated and need allocating to existing cats (or new ones creating. If you are interested I suggest getting to the "top" of the relevant cat (say this one) and looking at the overall structure before doing too much. It can also be useful to look at the structure of related cats elsewhere (so another country in that case). It is far easier to add cats & to cats that it is to re-organise them afterwards.
- Cheers for the work. --Herby talk thyme 10:10, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- Cache stuff can be weird - glad it is ok. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:44, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

- Give me one good reason why I shouldn't? ShakataGaNai, you claim not to know who Grawp or Hagger are, but in the unblock declined reason above the reason given was "Grawp vandalism". bsrboy (talk) 21:38, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- One good reason? It's against the rules. That is, in fact, the only reason you need. You vandalized a template. If it is called "Grawp" or "Hagger" or "swiss cheese" I dont really care. The end result is the same. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:09, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 08:56, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

In this map, Sweden is left blank—"No Data"—while Norway is colored in the third-darkest shade. However, in the map's color-coded legend, the third-darkest shaded countries are listed as: France, Canada and Sweden. So which is it? Norway or Sweden? Was Norway mistakenly painted while Sweden was left blank?

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. And also:
