Help....!
[edit]Stuck with a couple of identifications :) This & this. The latter is an orchid I'm pretty sure. Growing close together on acid soil on volcanic rock in central France (Auverge). Thoughts welcome - alternatively suggests of where to ask/look. Hope all is good & regards to all. --Herby talk thyme 14:29, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Wikibooks question
[edit]Does Wikiboosk have book(s) about green lifestyle (something like this)? I tried to search but probably my keywords were wrong. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:48, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Can't think of one off the top of my head. A few ideas were tossed about on Wikiversity a while back though, maybe search there? --SB_Johnny talk 13:56, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for help! --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:26, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Hi SB Johnny, I do not think that the deletion of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo images was done in accordance to our policies. Hence, I asked for an undeletion. Please feel free to comment it. Thanks and regards, AFBorchert (talk) 08:26, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 00:54, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine
[edit]Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:24, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Deletion of images of Hong Kong money

- Best to you too, Herby :-). I really do miss feeling like I'm helping people learn and teach in the spirit of sharing, but still rather unhappy about my Jimbo encounters and the things I came to understand when I looked into things. --SB_Johnny talk 22:11, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. I don't think you need this information, but well... ;-)Trijnsteltalk 16:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Use of commons images on Wikipediocracy
[edit]Hi SB Johnny, as you seem to be a WCy member, you might tell somebody over there that their current use of File:AVN 2008 Porn Clown.jpg at wikipediocracy . com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5093#p5093 violates the CC-BY license (attribution mandatory) and thereby the copyright of the photographer. --Túrelio (talk) 20:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- Interesting! Yes, I'll bring it up. --SB_Johnny talk 20:37, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- Done (viewtopic.php?p=5115#p5115). That would have been a hell of a lot easier if I could have just followed your link rather than having to workaround with 2 panels opened :-/. It would also have been easier for you to see the comment I tried to link to. --SB_Johnny talk 20:47, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- Well, instead of linking to here, which does not fulfil the required attribution (as neither you nor I am the author), a simple line of credit ( (C) The Naughty American, CC-BY ) would have done it. --Túrelio (talk) 20:56, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- I meant linking to the discussion on WY (where it turns out that this photo was scraped from a now defunct flickr account, etc.). --SB_Johnny talk 22:41, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- You don't have to link to the (now dead) flickr page or the "porn site" link, all you have to do is do what Túrelio has suggested above (only thing you're linking to is the license). Bidgee (talk) 23:43, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

- Thank you, David... good to have gentlemen and scholars afoot! (the post where it's attributed is here, though if you scroll down a bit there's at least some reason to doubt the license) --SB_Johnny talk 11:45, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- You're welcome. But I see from your final comment in the cited thread that sanity has apparently now prevailed—at least for the time being—and the trick with the IP address isn't necessary any more.

AUTHORIZATION FOR PUBLICATION
[edit]Hi!
My name is Edoardo Bit, I am an architect and also a “young researcher” of the University of Ferarra (Italy).
I am writing a book on the “green walls technologies” and I have found very interesting a photo in your page. So, I would kindly ask you if I can use it in my book.
Obviously, if you gently decide to grant me the permission, your name (or your nickname) and the link of the picture will be correctly cited in the credits of my publication.
The photo which I would use is:

Thank you very much! I hope you will attend my request…
My e-mail is: edoardo.bit@gmail.com
Bye,

Just if you or User:DearJimbo wonders why there are not so many users supporting his unblock, you may read User talk:Martin H./Archive 24#Please stop pestering contributors along with the edit-summaries. I wouldn't have him blocked for starting deletion request in an immediate response to disagreement (even reopened some of them that were valid) but for all the rude phrases he left at various places. So you can't expect, for example those who experienced him this way supporting his unblock. I hope I could extend your observing view. I am not saying Mr. Kuiper should not be unblocked but I am not inclined supporting someone who tends to revenge-acts if you disagree with him in a deletion request. (If you need evidence for this claim, I will provide it. But the purpose of this comment is not to make Mr. Kuiper, who is also a valuable contributor, more bad than he actually is. He uploaded some nice and illustrative files of physics and has certainly a good knowledge of copyright, furthermore he is multilingual.) Personally I don't think Commons is on the tipping point but all the hate speech and the claims it would be are extremely annoying, speculative and do not solve any problem (or do they?) They just eat my time. -- Rillke(q?) 10:32, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm sure Pieter could probably use some work on his bedside manner, but honestly it's hard to confront someone who (perhaps knowingly) uploads copyvios without being, well, confrontational.
- In any case, I remember the commons of "the old days" (excuse me while I grab my cane and hearing aid), and I can clearly see the difference between then and now (and I don't like it). I think the good sorts from those days are like the frog in the pot who doesn't realize the water is slowly starting to boil (and yes, I know that's an urban legend, but it's still a good metaphor).
- I think the root of WP's problems starting in '04/'05 or so was that a cabal (encouraged by Jimbo, to be fair) got control, circled their wagons, and made politics a central aspect of being an admin. I think the latest incarnation of the ArbCom is actually starting to deconstruct that, if at a glacial pace, but it wouldn't have taken 7 or 8 years if people had spoken up when it started to happen. That's what I mean by the tipping point, and that's what I'm trying (in my jaded and oblique fashion) to warn about. I don't want to see that happen at commons.
- I'm sorry it's eating your time ;-). --SB_Johnny talk 21:16, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- For an "oldie" quite a perceptive comment... --Herby talk thyme 05:51, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I wasn't around before '04/'05 so I can't access the situation. Of course the wiki has history and it is quite easy to access this history. I just don't think negative comments of general nature are particularly helpful. This is a personal feeling. I see them and it's difficult to understand "what could we/I improve". Perhaps I could try to unwatch some pages… -- Rillke(q?) 10:59, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- My comments are intended as criticism, so whether or not they are "negative" will depend on how attached you are to particular dogs in particular races.
- I can say from personal experience that un-watching pages that cause annoyance really does make your watchlist-checking experience far more constructive and pleasant. If my comments are genuinely making you feel defensive, then yes, it's time to trim (or even clear out!) the watchlist :-). --SB_Johnny talk 16:47, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
using your photo in our magazine
[edit]I couldn't find an email address for you, so I hope this reaches you! I work for the American Society of Landscape Architects, and we're planning to use your photo of Ilex verticillata with an article that mentions the plant. It's under Creative Commons so we can use it, but I wanted to credit you with your real name (if you'd like)--please email me at lspeckhardt [at] asla.org. If I don't hear from you before we go to print I'll use "SB Johnny," but you can still email me if you'd like me to send you a link to the article. It'll be in our November issue. Thanks!

Use of your pictures for a book
[edit]Hi,
We’d like to use some of your pictures for a book that will be publish next fall. On the Internet site that we consulted, it says that the pictures are copyright free.
The title of the book is Secrets de plantes 2 and the name of the author is Fabien Girard. The initial print run will be 1000 copies.
We’d like to have your autorisation by e-mail to use those pictures. If you accept, what is the exact name of the source that we must write beside the pictures?
Here are the links of the pictures.

[edit]Just asking for some pix to use at [1] and similar places. Any help appreciated. Smallbones (talk) 15:24, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
File:Kashmir irrigation.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
