My picture here: File:UBC campus.jpg
[edit]You sent me a flickr mail on this picture above you uploaded from My flickr account. It was taken in 2008 with an outdated Fuji camera and with that incomplete building.
Now, I use a better Canon photo and have taken 2 shots from the same high rise here &
They're better pictures but like most of the pictures on my Commons account, few people use them. But that's OK. I put some good (and some so so) picures on my flickr account in the past to ask people for license changes on images that could be uploaded to Commons but I'm not very active today after Captain tucker corrrectly said that flickr restricts basic accounts to only 200 images. I don't take many pictures anyway unlike you...and have had health issues the past few years. Thanks for noticing my dated picture anyway. Note: Any old or historic pictures of buildings on UBC campus which I took are on my Commons account as you can easily see. (I have very few images) I have little time to take pictures today and visit UBC maybe only once a year as I live in the suburbs of Metro Vancouver 90 minutes away from campus. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:45, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry to hear about the health issues.
- I try to leave a note on every flickr image I upload, in part to show appreciation, but a more important reason is to help make sure I don't try to upload it a second time. Recently I start leaving a note when I find that I have tried to upload an image that someone else has already uploaded. This is a check I would add to flinfo -- once the URL is given check to see if the image has already been uploaded.
- Nautical / maritime images are the ones I am most interested in. We have about two dozen images of Toronto's main fireboat, a couple of its second, standby fireboat. But we have hardly any image of fireboats from other Canadian cities. Vancouver is a much busier port than Toronto. I imagine it needs several fireboats. If you ever find yourself at an event in Vancouver Harbour, and you have your camera, and you have a chance to snap some pictures of one or more fireboats, that would make my day. Similarly, fireboats from Victoria, Esquimault, Nanaimo, Prince Rupert, or any other port, would be cool.
- As to flickr's 200 image limit, I don't think google panoramio has a similar limit, and it too does support free liscenses. Flinfo also supports panoramio.
- Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 01:54, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- The thing I would really like to get would be
- Comment: Unfortunately I don't travel much outside of Metro Vancouver except the occasional trip to Nanaimo where my cousins are but while my uncle lives near the coast, I don't see a fireboat. Anyway, the real reason why I placed some good pictures from a museum on my flickr account was to show people that I was a reasonably genuine photographer. I like ancient Egypt but many museums in Egypt like the Cairo Museum has Banned photography in their buildings. So, I had to contact a few people to license their images 'copyright free'--that is the key word I use. I had a few successes with 2 users here and here where the copyright owner could take pictures at the Cairo museum before the ban came into place. Cameras are also banned in the tombs of Egypt's Valley of the Kings today but one user helped me with some images here I got most of these images between 2008-2010 when I contacted people but I've stopped since then when my health became poorer. I'm feeling OK today as my doctor has got me on the right dosage of medicines but I've generally stopped. As an Aside, I personally prefer Commons to Wikipedia and dread all the editwars on wiki and even the wheelwarrings among Admins. It doesn't help one's mental health at all sadly. (At least the pictures I uploaded are mostly historically invaluable) including this single bust of Emperor Decius in colour from M. Harrsch. Many flickr author's ask for attribution in the image title and I am happy to give it to them...since they took the picture themselves. With Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:57, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Best wishes with the health issues!
Some issues are worth trying to contact the original photographer -- but it can be surprisingly difficult.

CL-215 images
[edit]Hi, thanks for your heads-up on my talk page. I am more than familiar with the differences between the two variants covered here. I manage an archive with 55 originals, plus 18 shots of my own, covering both variants. The subject category containing the images is not directly linked to either version nor to Canadair, and is effectively an orphan with no explanatory description. I decided that it was best to move the images. In retrospect, they are probably all CL-415s, but so far off that they are perhaps not much use as illustrations of either variant. Several other images in CL-215 also appear to be CL-415s. I've read your (now ancient) CFD, and thinking of kicking it into life to resolve the mess in this area.PeterWD (talk) 23:51, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Steel mill
[edit]Hi. (I didn't discuss)
I take your point about the broader scope of "steel industry" - let me explain what I have done.
There were more than one nearly equivalent categories (by content)- I found - "steel industry", "steel industries" and "steel mills" - there are also "steel companies" categories - I merged the first three into "steel industry" as part of a cleanup - then categorising by country, and to a certain extent (which is limited by my time and knowledge) into categories of "Steel production" - although the titles suggest different topics the actual contents were pretty much random (in my opinion)
Essentially all the images in "steel industry" are "steel mills" as per the broad definition given in en:Steel mill , and vice versa - there was no distinction.
You can see the result of the work I have done at Category:Steel industry and its contents
There is also a usage issue regarding "steel mill" in some countries a "steel mill" is any steel production site - in others it is a steel rolling of forging plant eg Category:Rolling mills - and does not really include sites that only have blast furnaces or converters.
As per "Steel mill" if you want to do more work I would recommend making categories such as "steel rolling mills" and "steel forging mills" as subcats of "Category:Steel production", or even make a new category "steel manufacturing processes"
Basically currently almost all the contents of "steel industry" are "steel mills" in the broadest sense - there are few if any images of steel shipping, steel final products etc. There are a very limited number of HQ's (about 2 I think)- most of the images of long range shots of factories or inside wide shots of factories.
I can improve the categorisation down to production process at a later date - I'd appreciate any suggestions on what sort of categorisation is needed next.Mddkpp (talk) 23:42, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
I woudl appreciate it if you didn't revert the edits before looking at the results as I have done a lot of work categorising down to a more detailed level than before. If you need to reinstate the steel mills category please do not undo the other work.Mddkpp (talk) 23:45, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

PD-Afghanistan
[edit]Geo Swan, you seem to have taken an interest in {{PD-Afghanistan}} in the past. Pursuant to discussions on foundation-l and elsewhere, I have updated the template to more accurately describe what works may legally be in the public domain due to the lack of domestic and international copyright laws in Afghanistan. The exception, which principally applies only to Afghanis publishing in Afghanistan, is considerably narrower than the prior text seemed to imply. I've also left some discussion at Commons:Village pump#PD-Afghanistan. I thought you might interested in these updates. Dragons flight (talk) 21:50, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

a request
[edit]I am concerned over several aspects of your recent nomination -- Commons:Deletion requests/Very low resolution images in Category:PD Afghan. I am leaving you a note here on your talk page, rather than in the deletion discussion, to reduce the embarrassment for you.
The boiler plate of the instantiation of the standard heads-up you left on my talk page advises me not to take the nomination personally. The text of your nomination, however, personally calls me out. The standard heads up is correct, we are all volunteers here. Unless you have a specific reason to name a contributor whose actions triggered your concern, like that they have a history of disruption, bad faith, or failures to comply with policy, why would you specifically name another volunteer? Why couldn't you say, "all these images were uploaded by a single contributor"?
We all have a limited reserve of good faith. I suggest it is a mistake for any of us the unnecessarily use up other contributor's reserve of good faith through carelessness -- as I think you did here. Geo Swan (talk) 20:13, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Actually. I do not believe you are at fault here. When you uploaded these images in good faith they were in the public domain. That does not seem to be the case anymore. I am sorry if you feel singled out. It is just a deletion nomination, not the Spanish inquisition. I have traditionally established the uploader of mass nominations as often the commonality is the uploader. I have removed your username from the nomination per your request, however. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 20:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Template:PD-Afghanistan
[edit]Hi, I realize you are quite upset but you did ask me to "show my work". I'd be more than willing to explain in greater detail but you may want to consider Template:PD-Soviet which shows how images that were once in the public domain became fully copyrighted later. Not at Jarvis
[edit]You recently uploaded a series of pictures named and described as "Queens Quay at Jarvis". At one corner of Queens Quay and Jarvis there is a large Loblaws store and at the other is a big boxy night club complex, which are not in any of these pictures. [edit]Hi Geo Swan, I noticed that The undertow left you a message at User talk:The undertow. If you have been looking up information about him, I think it's best to just leave him alone now that he's blocked. Dcoetzee (talk) 22:23, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- I came here to say the exact same thing. Is there any truth to what he's saying here, because running around the internet, digging up stuff relating to his RL name, then messaging or 'friending' him is really not okay? It just looks creepy and obsessive - Alison ❤ 23:29, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah,
- I'll leave him alone.
- I did reply to the email he sent me, where he threated to sue me, and to "sick" Wikipedia Review on me. But my reply was a brief, mild one, where I ignored his threats and personal attacks, and merely offered him a brief second opinion on his interpretation in his email as to why he had been de-sys-opped.
- I read that someone was nominating all his images for deletion. I found that wasn't true. Just two of the images he had uploaded had been nominated for deletion.
- I was curious as to whether he had published any other good images, under a free liscense. And a google image search took me to his page on an image publishing site. There were no images there, earlier today. But right under the button for his photos, there was another button for "follow". I thought this button would simply give me a heads-up when he published additional images.
- He writes that I requested to friend him. That wasn't my intention. I didn't anticipate it would even tell him I clicked the "follow" button. I really think Picassa should have asked for some confirmation, or offered me some kind of clarification, if it really was going to tell him I requested him as a "friend".
- For the record, after I learned of his reaction, I went to Picassa, to click "unfollow".
- Picassa told me "Sorry, that page was not found." Geo Swan (talk) 23:54, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yes I assumed he had misrepresented you. I'm taking your word that you were just curious about what other useful works he might have published and weren't aware that he would receive a notification of your following (not all sites do that). Don't worry about it. :-) Dcoetzee (talk) 02:11, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, Geo Swan. I got a message on my talk page yesterday asking me why you were uploading images from Flick under your own name, images that had already been uploaded to Commons from Flickr. I had no idea - but deleted a couple of your uploads as duplicates (I always delete the subsequent upload in cases of duplicates). Then it occurred to me that you = booledozer. Sorry, I was slow on the uptake. You may want to be careful when you upload images here that have already been on Flickr for a few days, as there is a chance that they are already here. There are a number of us that troll Flickr for useful images. In the future, I won't upload booledozer images here, on the basis that you probably will do so. Cheers. Sorry about the confusion. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 12:24, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
- I noticed your deletion, checked the earlier images, and realized I had previously uploaded them to flickr. I have no problem with you deleting the later image. Feel free to upload any image I uploaded from flickr or panoramia.
- Since November 2009 I spend an extra 20-30 seconds to return to the image page on flickr to leave a link to the commons version, and thank the flickr uploader for using an image that allows re-use. While flickr uploaders appreciative of the heads-up the main reason I started doing this was to help prevent uploading images that have already been uploaded. However, it wouldn't have helped in this particular case.
- I wonder how difficult it would be for flinfo and similar tools to check images' unique flickr ID to see if the image had already been uploaded -- prior to going any further? However, this wouldn't have helped in this particular case.
- I haven't really decided what the best way to organize my own images, prior to uploading them. The new upload wizard, that allows uploading multiple images, has really performed poorly for me. I haven't found it faster than individual uploads. My computer has 1 gigabyte of memory. Maybe the script the upload wizard uses is a huge memory hog, and 1 gigabytes is not enough. When I give it a long list of files to upload I find that the wizard crashes. Since the wizard uses javascript, or some other scripting language, the state is lost, and the entire list of images is lost. Using the stupid wizard can squander an hour or more, with no images uploaded in the end.
- The flickr upload wizard is also very slow, but at least it is less likely to crash, and lose its state. As an exercise I told it to upload all the images I took on my dozen or so last photo expeditions -- about 1000 photos. I started over half a dozen instances of the wizard -- and it took ages. Without explanation it told me about 10 percent of the files failed to upload. It gave me the option of trying again on those images. However, again without explanation, most of the repeated attempts failed. What with all the trying agsin uploading those images took over 24 hours of real time, and several hours of my time.
- I'll try to be more methodical, and figure out which images merited uploading to commons, prior to uploading a batch to flickr.
- Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 23:33, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
- You don't seem to indicate anywhere that you are the same contributor with two different user names. How was I supposed to know? Am I missing finding this info somewhere? Secondarywaltz (talk)
- Well, among your options, was to ask me for an explanation. I was the one who made the second upload -- presumably the one that triggered your concern.
- There isn't any question in your mind that I am a good faith contributor -- entitled to the assumption of good faith -- is there?
- I could list all my email addresses on my user page. I don't do that, for the same reason the WMF software provides us with an "email user" feature. Privacy. Flickr is owned by yahoo, and flickr IDs are yahoo email addresses. Geo Swan (talk) 11:21, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
- I always assume good faith by you. If the profile at Flickr had simply said "I am George Swan" then everything would have been clear. As you know, there are rogue uploaders at both places, and although I have become familiar with your work, I did not know who booledozer was. That is why I questioned the origin of that version rather than yours. Since we are neighbours, I sometimes check to see if you have uploaded any photos that can be used in downtown articles. Thanks. Secondarywaltz (talk) 15:11, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, both flckrwashing and flickrcopyvio are serious problems worthy of concern. Personally I suspect flickrcopyvio is a more serious problem than flickrwashing. Many flickr users are clueless about copyright.
- Publishing my name like that that sounds like a great idea -- if I had no objection to making myself a greater target for spam, phishing, etc. Geo Swan (talk) 10:58, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Copyright on commons
[edit]Geo Swan, I believe you are confused a little on how copyright is handled on commons based on your post at Commons talk:Village pump#A flickrmail regarding PD-Afghanistan. It is irrelevant in terms of our policies to use their content weather or not they respect copyright. We respect other peoples', organizations', countries' copyright even if they do not respect copyright. We need definitive reason that something is freely licensed. We do not assume "free license" in the absence of proof. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 12:55, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
- As our lawyer has reminded us, there are photographer's rights we are legally obliged to honor. Over and above the rights we are legally obliged to honor we are free to agree to extend extra privileges to photographers. He reminded us that it was not his role to offer advice about these discretionary privileges we extend.
- Many people in the discussions over when or if we should remove Afghan images have incorrectly characterized those images as protected images -- images where we are violating a legal obligation if we continued to use them.
- These claims have, of course, been utter nonsense.
- You must have noticed that some contributors have been dogged and uncivil in repeatedly pushing their misrepresentation of our genuine legal obligations.
- Let's be crystal clear in discussions of Afghan images -- we have no legal obligation to treat Afghan images as if they were protected, until (1) Afghanistan becomes a signatory to Berne or a similar international intellectual property agreement; (2) Afghanistan implements mechanisms to enforce intellectual property rights.
- I would like to know whether Afghanistan did set up a mechanism to police intellectual property rights -- hence my flickrmail to Todd Huffman.
- Here in Canada we have had lobbyists from the US music industry come up and threaten us that they would lobby to have the US treat Canada as a rogue 34edcountry that does not honor the IP rights of other countries, and thus is not entitled to have the IP rights of its citizens honored. Similarly, China is notoriously lax about honoring intellectual property rights. If China was still regarded as a backward nation, one with little impact on the global economy, its flagrant disregard for IP rights would have got it blacklisted decades ago.
- Legally, reciprocity matters.
- In these discussions I think it is important to keep in mind the distinction between our legal obligations and between any conventions we agree on. I would appreciate it, if you, particularly, were careful not to conflate our legal obligations with your interpretations of conventions we may or may not have agreed upon here.
- As to your admonition "We do not assume "free license" in the absence of proof." Why would you address this comment to me? I never wrote or implied this.
- Afghan images remain legally copyright free in Berne-world not due to an "absence of proof". They remain legally copyright free because Afghanistan is not a signatory to any international intellectual property agreement. Geo Swan (talk) 14:07, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
- In the context of commons policy reciprocity does not matter as we honor copyright even in the absence of it. Afghan images are fully copyrighted in Afghanistan, they are not freely licensed there. Wikipedia needs to be freely distribute-able even in Afghanistan - perhaps especially in Afghanistan. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 18:39, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Questions about Romanian FOP
[edit]On December 15, 2009, images from Bucuresti I uploaded were nominated for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:A Bucuresti street scene -h.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:A Bucuresti street scene -d.jpg -- due to COM:FOP concerns. I'd never heard of FOP before. Apparently I promised to list all the images I had recently uploaded that might also lapse from FOP. I did so, and linked to that list in my comments at those two discussions.
I find FOP counter-intuitive, and have steered clear of uploading other images that might similarly lapse.
I have no ego attachment to any of these images. However, in my limited understanding of FOP, if the image shows multiple buildings, or the building is not the sole thing being depicted, then it is questionable whether the image lapses from FOP.
For what it is worth former administrator User:Jcb used to routinely keep images nominated for deletion due to FOP concerns based on assertions the building depicted was a "straight" building. All of User:Jcb closures of images nominated as lapses from FOP should probably be re-examined. Geo Swan (talk) 06:18, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Photo usage
[edit]Hello :-)
I just wanted to say "Thank you very much" for your picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B.C._Place_from_False_Creek.jpg
My name is Daniel, i used that picture in my little "travel around the world" puzzle game for android.
When a player sees your image (when completing a level) there is a short sentence describing the location visible on your panorama and also you are credited directly as "Photographer". Hopefully you are fine with that, if you want any changes please contact me directly. :-)

- Woops. flickr contributor Thomas Quine took this picture. I email Sirleto a heads-up. Geo Swan (talk) 22:33, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Renaming help
[edit]Hi, I have requested to rename File:Flag of the Emirate of Herat.svg to "File:Flag of the Durrani Empire.svg" because it was originally used for the Durrani Empire. Also, I oppose its speedy deletion because no convincing reason is given for it on the file's talk page. Could you help with the renaming? Thanks. Khestwol (talk) 18:56, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I archived your conversations from 2011, which solved the template issue that was going on on your talk page. I hope you don't mind, it's a bit invasive to do, but I like fixing stuff. --Vera (talk) 17:24, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Rotation of pdf-File-Image
[edit]Hello Geo Swan,
File:Ville-Class-Tug-Side-View.png
I took the pdf-image, converted it as png-image and thereby done the 180 degrees rotation.
Is there really any need to have the pdf as rotated version too?
(presently no tools at hand to do this job ;-)

- I honestly don't know. I am happy to go with your opinion if you are experienced in these matters. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 17:59, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
