Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Belmaachi
[edit]Hi, DanielRigal. Just wanted you to know that I placed a message at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#145 hoax photos requesting that the 145 Selim Belmaachi photos be mass deleted and the accounts blocked as sock vandals. Just hoping to avoid having to tag all the images individually. Cheers. CactusWriter (talk) 18:45, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- Great. Thanks. --DanielRigal (talk) 18:47, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- @CactusWriter & @DanielRigal Just to let you both know: Category:Sockpuppets_of_Aliases_Zahir contains the results of your efforts. Thanks again! Ellin Beltz (talk) 21:03, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. It is hard to believe that a total of 47 user accounts were involved and I still can't work out what the actual point was. It is a real pity that you had to give up your time to deal with this nonsense. Lets hope this has broken the back of it and it will now stop. --DanielRigal (talk) 21:16, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
- We're up to sixty-two now. Good catch this a.m. BTW, I put searchable click links on the Category:Sockpuppets of Aliases Zahir page. You can just click them and search the regular spellings of the two most often used strings. It makes it easier to search than typing! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 22:14, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

- @DanielRigal Greetings again... Is it just me, or do these uploads occur primarily on Thursdays? I was driving yesterday and thought "it's Thursday, should check for SB spam"... and realized what my subconscious had whispered, especially after seeing yet another upload. I searched the username "s____b_____" on google and found a twitter account that looks like it belongs to a child, but with no entries. The text seems too "adult" for a child. It is puzzling. Also I know that Steinsplitter runs at least one bot, perhaps he could bot the task of looking for the keywords? I do not know enough about the creation of bots yet (wish I did) to offer services in this regard. I really appreciate you keeping an eye out for these, I do too, but so far I think you have me beat by a few! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:56, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Ellin Beltz: You want a bot which is reporting if "Selim Belmaachi" is in filename? --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:04, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Great catch.
[edit]Never hesitate to ask me for any Commons help you need. I know how you feel being a 'pedian over here... it's how I feel over there! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:18, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
Thursday again
[edit]Happy Turkey Day! I zapped another suspected sock of Aliases Zahir today. Same MO, overlong description with the "magic words" repeated. Whoever it is really does like Thursdays. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 21:19, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
- Presumably it would be impious to be doing such misdeeds on a Friday. ;-) --DanielRigal (talk) 23:17, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
- You might find this of interest, apparently same games at YouTube with many of the "old familiar" pictures we've come to know and delete on sight. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:33, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
More & more mysterious
[edit]Please see [1]. I see that most of the color images in that set have (c) metadata to Benjamin Boccas. I nominated a couple and will come back later to see what you think. It's possible I'm totally wrong and this is the (c) photographer listed. I guess we'll find out. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:35, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
