Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:53, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:2005-Vol.-33-No.-01-Cub-Story -Bair-Wings-J-3.pdf. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:2005-Vol.-33-No.-01-Cub-Story -Bair-Wings-J-3.pdf ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Forty eight Flitfires at LaGuardia 29 Apr 1941.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

File:NC38790.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Cubgirl4444.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

[edit]Which pictures are unfree? The one flying around the statue is on cover page of "Flying and Popular Aviation" July 1941. The First Flitfire ever restored is in EAA Antique/Classic Division Inc. OK, I must edit the Smithsonian pic
[edit]I read this on Smithsonian, "Permitted Uses
The Smithsonian welcomes you to make fair use of the Content as defined by copyright law.Information on United States copyright fair use law is available from the United States Copyright Office: http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html. Please note that you are responsible for determining whether your use is fair and for responding to any claims that may arise from your use.
In addition, the Smithsonian allows personal, educational, and other non-commercial uses of the Content on the following terms:
You must cite the author and source of the Content as you would material from any printed work.
You must also cite and link to, when possible, the SI Website as the source of the Content.
You may not remove any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices including attribution information, credits, and notices, that are placed in or near the text, images, or data.
You must comply with all terms or restrictions other than copyright (such as trademark, publicity and privacy rights, or contractual restrictions) as may be specified in the metadata or as may otherwise apply to the Content.
For commonly asked questions about use of Smithsonian content, see FAQs below."
Even though this pic is on "Flying and Popular Aviation" July 1941, I still must include the credit to the Smithsonian. I believe that's correct. So I will add this & I'm looking into other pics for other magazines... Cubgirl4444 (talk) 13:27, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
- "Smithsonian Institution photographs, drawings, film, audio recordings or other materials may not be reproduced, resold, or commercially used without specific written permission from the Smithsonian Institution." Uploading onto Commons does not count as non-commercial use. Commons requires a freely licensed photo, which this isn't.Nigel Ish (talk) 13:36, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
- sorry but that's not what it says! If the picture is linked & credited, then why can'y it be on Wiki? Many people go to Wiki for research. Shouldn't we be able to provide a link to a National Museum's image & post the image as long as the credit is cited, as required? I tink my taxes pay for National Museums. Nigel Ish's interpretation is too restrictive & unrealistic. Need advice from wiki!!Cubgirl4444 (talk) 13:44, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
So I've decided to contact every magazine & book to get special permission. Wiki is considered a commercial source? Is that it But I make no money off of any of this. I thought Wiki was a voluteer collaborative free encyclopedia. Is that not the case?Cubgirl4444 (talk) 13:48, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

[edit]So Yann blocked me but I can't "talk" to him because I'm blocked! Nigel Ish tells me all photos must be on Public Domain. But Nigel is no longer an active user per his Wiki page (he seems pretty active to me). Anyway, is it correct or not what he said about Public Domain? If I take the time & trouble to request special permissions, then am I just wasting my time because images will still not be Public Domain?? Is that it? Please advise me as I don't want to waste my time. Thanks... Cubgirl4444 (talk) 15:07, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

- indeed, every picture in Commons needs a free license. There is three possibilities. If you are the author, then you can simply choose a suitable free license, when uploading image into Wikipedia. If you are not author, then a file is suitable, if the copyright is expired. And if copyright is not expired, then author can send OTRS-permission. If you own the photo, then this does not make you copyright holder. If you buy a film on DVD, then you get a copy of film, not its copyright. If you buy a book, then you get a copy of book, not its copyright. Taivo (talk) 13:00, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Flitfires in Allentown 1941.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Flitfires in Allentown 1941.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
And also:
No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 03:51, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Screen shot 2015-07-15 at 1.28.32 AM.png.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Screen shot 2015-07-15 at 1.28.32 AM.png ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- You did not create this form, you filled it out, the content is still copyright of the Smithsonian. Additionally, the permissions in the release you have requested are too restrictive as it is for one use only. Everything uploaded to Commons must be available to be used an unlimited number of times by an unlimited number of reusers, however they wish, including modifying the material to create a new work and selling it for profit; as I have suggested, please read COM:LICENSE so you can better understand our requirements. P.S. The emails & forms can be deleted. I wanted to show them and I have. They serve no purpose now.

- This is fine for images you have created. However, the fact that you have uploaded things which you clearly didn't create with this template means that some confusion over what images you have or haven't created should be appreciated by you. ColonialGrid (talk) 07:13, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. And also:
