Hello, Azcolvin429!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi !

I amelorated with Photoshop this picture since a very little photography (in an old newspaper) of my personal familial collection, scanned. I think this photography for the newspeper, is made around 1930 by one of my grand-uncles. No other one exists in the public domain !

[edit]

Hi, this chart of the universe's composition is a useful idea but the figures for dark matter and dark energy are a little out-of-date, so they conflict with articles that use the chart...any chance you could update with more up-to-date figures from the latest WMAP analysis given in the "Parameters" section of wikipedia's Lambda-CDM model article? Also, do you remember where you got the breakdown of baryons into gas/stars/neutrinos/heavy elements? Would be useful to have a reference for that. 74.97.130.107 17:17, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you make the .svg version of your images about earth place?

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Azcolvin429,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

It has been so long I honestly have no idea where I got the info from. I created it in 2010 before I was smart enough to provide references. It is probably dated, though the coverage by other maps I have found appears to be the same. Andrew. Z. Colvin • Talk 04:13, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, congrats on the great infographics and thank you for sharing your work with the world. I was wondering if, two years after uploading this fantastic all-encompassing map, and thanks to the Gaia data, you would be interested in collaborating to add one level between the local stars and the Milky Way, that you could call the Orion arm. By plotting the brightest Gaia DR2 stars within about 10000 light-years, the pattern of the arms starts to emerge, albeit with blanks due to dust. I used a custom Matlab program to render an image. I could try to use the same orientation as the other images, and you could integrate it within your blue frame. I do realize that this would break the 9 = 3x3, easy to print, format. But I hope you consider it. Cheers, Kilohn_limahn (talk) 11:57, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Sorry for the delay. I did not see your message. I probably won't add to that image simply due to the complexity of editing it. However, I see no problem with creating a separate image for the w:Orion Arm page. I could use the same format as the series. How do we start? Can you render a high res visual plot that I can reproduce using photoshop? In the images I created, I placed each structure individually. Let me know! Cheers. Andrew. Z. Hello Andrew.

I am currently making SVG files of your works to make translations to French (I also make English versions) and on File:06-Local Group (LofE06240).png, I noticed an error on the distance of Andromeda XVII (top left of Andromeda): it should be 2.39 Mly (734 kpc, cf. [1]), not 4.42 Mly.

If I may, I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that the contrast of certain colours can make it difficult for some people to read (e.g. the distances in dark purple on a black background), as well as the texts written vertically.

You can read this article that summarises good practice in the use of colours and provides a list of tools to help you choose.

Kind regards, Şÿℵדαχ₮ɘɼɾ๏ʁ 16:32, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Actually, I found another And XVII at the bottom right of Andromeda (without any distance), so one one them is an error.
What source did you use to make this image?

Error in Laniakea image

[edit]

Hi, Andrew. I noticed a small error in the Laniakea image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/81/07-Laniakea_%28LofE07240%29.png/922px-07-Laniakea_%28LofE07240%29.png

and also in a related one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Location_of_Earth_(9x1-English_Annot).jpg

Where they say: IC 341/Maffei Group, it should say IC 342/Maffei Group. IC 341 is a diffuse nebula next to the Pleiades cluster. IC 342 is the spiral galaxy which, together with Maffei 1, form the small group close to our Local Group.

I loved all your images, congratulations on your work!
