Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Order of categories

[edit]

Does the order of categories matter? And, if so, where would I find the mandated order? I ask because this edit appears to change nothing else. - Jmabel ! talk 05:31, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for your work! A tip on categories: Note that when creating new subcategories such as you did in breaking down the media in Category:Custom houses in the United States by state, the new state categories you created are also relevant to the specific state, as well as to custom houses. For example "Category:Custom houses in California", in addition to being in "Category:Custom houses in the United States", can and should be in a California related category. I added "Category:Buildings in California"in this case. You might wish to do similarly when creating categories yourself. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 14:55, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the recommendation. --Another Believer (talk) 14:56, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Trees at Reed College

[edit]

Four of the tree photos you recently added, like Trees at Reed College, Portland, Oregon, 2013.JPG, look like Cherry Blossoms. Do you think they are? If so, there is a category for Cherry Blossoms (also known as Sakura). Was just curious if you knew what kind of tree they are. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:33, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I am not certain. Perhaps next time I am on a stroll in the area I can see if a plaque exists with additional information. --Another Believer (talk) 16:51, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I am unable to find a plaque to identify the trees. --Another Believer (talk) 22:34, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I've nominated these photographs of a sculpture for deletion because, unfortunately, the permission of the sculptor was not obtained for the photographs to be licensed under the CC-BY-SA-3.0 licence. Freedom of panorama in the United States does not apply to sculptures. — SMUconlaw (talk) 16:29, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks for the heads up. If all images are deleted, I am assuming the category will be deleted as well. --Another Believer (talk) 18:30, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the encouraging words

[edit]

Fortunately I have new software and am going to do a better job with the categories and start adding coordinates to the uploads. Why doesn't someone modify the uploader to accept Lightroom keywords in the form of "category:abc" and append them to the upload? A keyword in the form "coordinates:00°00′00.00″N, 000°00′00.00″W" should also be passed to the camera location. I know where most of the lunch counters are and will start amending the categories. (Today I snapped one through the Fuller's window, and it will be a practice upload to see if I can get everything right.) Visitor7 (talk) 03:14, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo thanks for uploading. Do you know the name of the chicken breed? --PigeonIP (talk) 16:09, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I do not. Apologies. --Another Believer (talk) 16:29, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No need to be sorry. Sometimes it is only saddening for me to see good photos like this without breed information, that would increase the chance to use it in an article. The space in w:poultry and w:chicken is only limited. Best regards, --PigeonIP (talk) 17:19, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Understandable. I was simply taking photographs of the grounds--this particular chicken took a liking to me and followed me around for a while! --Another Believer (talk) 17:28, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I went ahead and categorized the image by chicken color and geographic location, so at least it does not sit in the parent "chicken" category. --Another Believer (talk) 17:32, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for discovering the category error on Agate Hall; I removed it from the photo. You have some great photos and a good eye for detail. I noticed that I have duplicated some of your work when I have been to some of the same sites, not intentional. Thanks again Visitor7 (talk) 16:31, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The D3100 can stand up to being dropped, banged, dunked, and dinged, but image quality isn't all that good. I am seriously considering a mirrorless Sony NEX-7 when it is affordable. On the other end of the spectrum, here is a link to a documentary about Gregory Crewdson. He directs his photographs using a photographer and a Hasselblad 8x10 bellows camera: http://www.gregorycrewdsonmovie.com/ Visitor7 (talk) 21:47, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I see that you reverted the photo of the Standard Insurance Building (Portland, Oregon), which is fine. In your documentation you say that you saved the cropped version elsewhere. I have not been able to find it, however. Can you direct me to it, please? Thanks, DASonnenfeld (talk) 00:16, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I was hoping that you had created a new image-file for it. In my experience with WikiMedia Commons, this must be done by the photographer. Kind regards, DASonnenfeld (talk) 10:22, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I just noticed that you uploaded some beautiful rose pictures from the International Rose Test Garden - may I suggest one more detail? Making a photo of the cultivar sign (which is often provided in rose gardens and hopefully also in that one) allows you to add the cultivar name to the photo information, making rose pictures more valuable... while there are already quite a lot of 'red' or 'pink' rose pictures, there are only very few cultivars with more than 10 pictures. With the photos you uploaded I was able to find the name in this picture, thus enabling me to create a gallery for Rosa 'Buttons 'n' Bows'.
Thanks for your contributions and I hope my suggestions are helpful (and not too tedious... ;->) Anna reg (talk) 14:14, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion, Anna. Actually, I often try to take photographs of the cultivar signs when I visit parks and gardens (see my pictures of Laurelhurst Park, for example). These Rose Test Garden pictures were mostly taken during a casual stroll with friends, but I do hope to one day organize a photo hunt (perhaps even with official staff/volunteers) of ALL the cultivars in the garden. (You have reminded me that I have some images of cultivar signs for rhododendron at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Park to upload!) I really appreciate the reminder. Will do! --Another Believer (talk) 15:49, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All cultivars is a really ambitious project! (We have a rather small rose garden here in Vienna with about 400 cultivars and even though I already made thousands of photos there during the last three summers, I still discover cultivars I haven't noticed at all... ;->) But I know how difficult it can be to balance between taking nice shots and not taking too much time for your photos, if you are not alone... Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 23:22, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you believe it was built in 1936? Like the wiki article says it was opened in 1936? Then I can add a year built category to it but I wasn't sure from the wiki article if that meant it was also built the year it opened. --Mjrmtg (talk) 17:03, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure as I have not researched the history of the building. --Another Believer (talk) 17:06, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
