Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:51, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Better source request for Image:F-35A in testing.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:F-35A in testing.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. - Read it in the description but I see now that wasn't stated on Flickr. Main gun seems to match up with the T-62 but other tanks may have used this gun. Marcus Aurelius (talk) 17:14, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- I too at first thought that it was a T-62 turret but I later realized that it could also be a T-72 turret. In fact the more I think about it the more I think that that is the case.

File:Phantom_ray_rollout.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) - Marcus, I respect your awareness of the fair use concept, but deleting another persons four sentence quote, which is useful in a working discussion, is pushing it a bit. I doubt there is any danger of commons users confusing a talk page quote with the free media that commons is hosting. I would therefore ask you to please refrain from reverting Timeshifters comments. Content that predates OTRS and has proper legacy licensing information, but no OTRS permissions.
[edit]Hi Marcus,
thanks for helping out in the Wikimedia commons. Today, i noticed that you flagged File:Aimoneyetap.jpg for deletion, I have already responded on the deletion discussion page but that's not the reason I am contacting you.
You may not be aware that the OTRS is a relatively new thing - it didn't exist prior to the year 2006.
While some content has indeed no OTRS information (yet), it may still have legacy license tagging in the file description which was sufficient and proper at the time it was uploaded. File:Aimoneyetap.jpg is one of those. And the OTRS is not about enforcing a new system; it is about easy verification of a creator's intent.
The game we're playing when we clean up wikimedia content is still that of determining whether a file is a clear copyright violation, probably a copyright violation, probably not a copyright violation or clearly not a copyright violation. The former two may warrant a deletion request, for the latter two there are much better ways to deal with the situation. And of course, copyright violations are not the only reason for why something may warrant deletion.
Either way, in a situation where the file is older than OTRS and wikipedia-compatible license information is present in the file description, the file falls into the probably not a copyright violation category, and a deletion request may be contrary to the objectives of Wikimedia Commons (which included keeping good contributors who follow the rules).
I feel it would have been better in this case to start by contacting the author and waiting 15 days before recommending deletion; but still - legacy content can be a challenge to deal with properly; there's still a bunch load of low-hanging fruits for which filing a deletion request is more appropriate.
Again, I have all respect for people like you who actively work to make Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia a better place; but please let's be cautious and courteous about enforcing rules on content that predates the rules we are trying to enforce. It's a matter of fairness to those who I also have respect for - the creators who actually put time and effort into creating content for the commons, and doing everything they could to meet the rules at the time.
Thanks and kind regards, ---volty 03:40, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi again, i raised the question at the OTRS noticeboard and User:Docu responded that it is consensus that these don't require an OTRS tag. I hope this helps clarify future such requests ;-) Cheers, ---volty 12:37, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:T92_profile.gif
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:T92_profile.gif. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:T92_profile.gif ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- Do we know why the en.wikipedia is not disambiguating their articles? If they get brackets can't they just be (United States)? Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 02:46, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- That was all my doing... We had a discussion a few years back where we agreed upon the fact that the United States ones were essentially first, or something like that, and should not have that after them. Also, it might just be an American pride thing. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 09:19, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Ban Ki-moon and other portraits.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Improved M249 Machine Gun.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File tagging File:WME logo.pdf
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:WME logo.pdf.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:WME logo.pdf ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Oshkosh images for deletion (Wolpat)
[edit]Hello Mark,
I have just spoken with a very nice lady at Oshkosh regarding the images in question. Weirdly she tells me not many weeks ago she had another enquiry for exactly the same problem from a Wiki user. She was rather bemused that common sense could not prevail, commenting that high resolution images freely available to download registration free by anybody might suggest to most that copyright by implication was free... I thought this might also be the case when I uploaded them, but clearly implication is not good enough for Wiki. To ensure their continued use (and availability to others) she is perfectaly happy to give permission etc., as she previously did. She may not be able to do this for 48hrs though, it depending on if I can get sorted and get the details to her quickly enough... I would assume I have 48hrs grace?--Wolpat (talk) 14:19, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- I think you have at least a week. Yeah, just putting something up on your website doesn't imply anything about the characteristics of the license they chose. If you want to instruct your contact at Oshkosh to put a notice on their site that all their images are licensed under a free license such as CC by-SA 4.0 or a similar compatible license, that would also make things easier in the future. You can cc me at mschierbecker@gmail.com. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 21:58, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Mark, they're on the case but it may take a few days. You can imagine the internal workings of such an organisation. Given that this is in hand, as opposed to just being ignored, can 'we' get a stay of execution or will deletion happen by autopilot and then I have to reload everything when permissions do come through, which they will?--86.156.235.169 13:32, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
- Well, you removed the deletion tags (in the future, don't do that) so they won't be deleted anytime soon. If it seems like it's taking too long I might re-add the tags in a month or so. Let me know if you need help. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 22:16, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry, I thought doing that was an OK thing to do... Oshkosh are going to add something on their website that says all images are free to the world. The lady I communicate with asked me about this, and I suggested quoting the Wiki license you mentioned above. When this appears, will it cancel out the current situation, or would I need to maybe forward a link along for A.N. Other of sufficient Wiki 'rank' top check out?--Wolpat (talk) 18:33, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
- They could put something on their site like: "All Oshkosh Defense photos are licensed as CC BY-SA 4.0. Please credit: Oshkosh Defense/NAME_OF_PHOTOGRAPHER."
- After that's done depending on which license they choose, you or I will go through and update the license on the images you've uploaded. Also we'll need to add a link to the permission page or an explanation under "= permission." Mark Schierbecker (talk) 02:57, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Mark, an update to let you know the wheels are turning (I deleted the earlier message as this is newer).

Sounds good Wolpat! Thanks. I met with with Laura today and I am going to be confirming the origins of all our pictures on our website and then producing these results to Meghan. ː ːHi Mark, here's where we are... Those 7 images, they cannot trace ownership and so are happy for them to be deleted. They've asked me to select and replace them, which I'll do. They're still working on how to apply permissions on the website, as apparently some are free to use, while others are not. They're working on it, and when that permission is up I'll come back to you for guidance on what to do next. Thanks for being so patient and helpful with this - not everybody would be, there are too many 'power has gone to my head' people out thereǃ--Wolpat (talk) 14:30, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

ːHi Mark, thank you for those nice words. It took some time, and I am amazed they stuck with it to be honest. Most big concerns don't bother with helping out on such 'little things' as images on Wikipediaǃ Regarding your suggested 'permisions' tag. Is that a normal thing to do? It just seems like extra work for me. The evidence is there for useage. Happy to add if required. --Wolpat (talk) 14:12, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- I would suggest adding it. Someone who scrutinizes your uploads might miss the Creative Commons notice in the footer. Or the footer might be deleted, or who knows. Doesn't have to be right now. Maybe save that task for a rainy day. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 07:51, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Patroller!
[edit]
Hi Schierbecker,
You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.
As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.
We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.
If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:35, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

I updated the license tags on all of these. I purchased all but the Willard Paul photo, and made them available for use by others. If the license tag still is isn't right, please let me know. I don't want those photos to be deleted if it can be avoided.
Thanks,

File:AA-1 at Eglin AFB.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Copyright status: File:GP P1 SK.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:GP P1 SK.jpg.
Thank you. |

File tagging File:B2SpiritGuamCrash.webm
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:B2SpiritGuamCrash.webm.
Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Janet Morris and UVM Christine.JPG ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Mislabeled photo
[edit]Hi Schierbecker: Way back in 2011, you retitled this picture, with the edit summary that you were matching the title to the file description. Unfortunately, there's an error. These are not chicks. Only adult Adelie penguins have dark chins and throats. These are moulting adults. Can you please change the title back to correct this – or let me know where I should submit this request to get it done? Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 12:52, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
