So many, yet so few

Help me to make for 4 bridge icons

Sorry. Now I have 4 icons for you to make. For like these compounds:

  •   (lhSTRrf-R) +   (lhSTR-L)

  •   (lhSTRlg-R) +   (lhSTR-L)
  •   (lhSTRrg-L) +   (lhSTR-R)

New road junction icons

Arg SergioCarp, did you mean to upload an icon showing a junction of two roads instead of   (MWENTexk4) (which shows a road and a closed railway)? Jc86035 (talk) 16:21, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@Useddenim and Tuvalkin: Assuming the icons are reuploaded as k-type junctions between two roads, how would they be named? Per   (RMCONTg) I think the icon above, if it were a RM-only junction, would be kRMABZg+4, but I'm not sure what the icons are supposed to show in the diagrams on Arg SergioCarp's eswiki sandbox page. If the roads are different, I'm not sure if there's precedent (since all the current road junction icons with a sensible naming scheme are at-grade 90° crossings). If the curve is supposed to be a slip road like the ones in   (MWEXlgrgo) I have no idea what they would be called under the current naming scheme (I don't think there's precedent; n could be used for the slip roads but then they might combine to form an RM without the centre stripe?). Note also the roads in the linked diagrams using railway icons with various other types of track geometry. Jc86035 (talk) 16:21, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Given that that's probably not a very realistic option (especially since it would require the agreement of users from all the projects which currently use the seven other road icon types), [how] would you rename/reupload Arg SergioCarp's RM icons? Jc86035 (talk) 16:40, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
Two things need to be standardized: the naming (see User:Circeus/BSicon_renaming/Red for a start), and the colours and geometry (see Talk:BSicon/Icon geometry and SVG code neatness/Archive 3#Red roads). Useddenim (talk) 17:07, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Half width crossings

I'm planning to create several half-width crossing icons, but I wanted clarification on the naming convention first. Would these be the correct names?

  •   (udKRZ1), the combo of   (udSTR) and   (udSTRm+1). Based off of   (udKRZ1o) and   (udKRZ1u), except this would be a flat junction.
  •   (udKRZ2), the combo of   (udSTR) and   (udSTR2+m). Same as above.
  •   (udKRZ3), the combo of   (udSTR) and   (udSTR3+m). Same.
  •   (udKRZ4), the combo of   (udSTR) and   (udSTRm+4). Same.
  • and so on for d-, exd-, and uexd- suffixes.

Directional compass icons

Double-Width Water Crossing

Hello, I noticed that while the   (hbKRZWae) symbol is here (and seems to be used fairly frequently),   (hbKRZWa) and   (hbKRZWe) are not usable. Is it possible for someone to fix this please? Sorry, I am unsure how to insert the actual icons onto this page, but the first is a bridge over a double-width waterway, while the two missing icons are the beginning and end of such a bridge. --TheFinkie (talk) 06:53, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

If you don't use one of the BS templates its also possible to put them in as if they were photos. All icons are uploaded as svg files, and to embed them you only have to add BSicon_ before and .svg after the icon's name. To add the missing ones is no big problem, but I'll do that tomorrow. – C21H22N2O2 /talk/lab/de/en 22:23, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
By the way, another method to embed icons into wiki pages is with the bsq template. Now I uploaded the requested two icons plus two others with abandoned tracks:   (hbKRZWa),   (hbKRZWe),   (exhbKRZWa), and   (exhbKRZWe). hbKRZWe I uploaded with a false name, that's why it doesn't show up here. Surface line/tunnel diagonal crossings

Hello, can someone with SVG skills (which I lack) please create a new family of icons on which a surface line and a tunnel cross diagonally? If I am not mistaken, these would be the tKRX and KRXt families. The one I'd like to use right now would be, I think, the umKRXt icon: a top left to bottom right U line crossing over a top right to bottom left rail tunnel. But others could be useful, too. Parallel highway icons

I'd like to have vRAq, dvRAq and vRA : I'm working on the scheme of Line 25N (Belgium) which is built directly on a highway median.

By the way, an adaptation of   (SKRZ-Ao) and   (KRZvo) could be useful to build overbridges over parralel highways too.

Actually, this could be an alternative but it would make the scheme more complex since the railway line I'm working on crosses several other highways using the red and yellow symbols. The highway with a railway line on its median is on this scheme, fr:Schéma de la ligne 25 (Infrabel)) between mileposts 15,90 and 17,60

Line start / end for narrow elevated shifted forward / backward (Formation)

I haven't found anything on the catalog fitting with   (hdSTRa),   (hdSTR)... that would can be used for narrow elevated like we use   (lhSTRa@f) or   (lhSTRe@g) for full-width elevated. Are-there matching icons or do they need to be created ?

Unfortunately, the 250px wide narrow elevated hdSTR… icons don't match the standard elevated geometry, where the formations are located ±125 pixels from the centreline. So, "no". Useddenim (talk) 17:10, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Could always add them. Sometimes though, I feel it would be better to just make the diagram a bit bigger than to add in irregular icons, but the existance of the hdSTR icons I suppose demands ends.User:Deonyi 11:58, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Dead-end sidings

A thanks to Useddenim for streamlining en:Template:Zig Zag Railway Route (where I used the diagonal crossing requested above)!

I have one problem with it, however. On that line, there is a former passing loop that is now just a single point and a dead-end track to park vehicles on. I drew this using uSPLa and uxSPLe, which Useddenim replaced with an uPSLl that indicates an intact passing loop. There are similar dead-end sidings on some mountain railways in South America (where ascending trains drop off some wagons when trains prove too heavy) and on other mountain lines to temporarily park special vehicles like snowplows, so mine mustn't be the only possible application.

If not in existence, can you create icons for such dead-end sidings, including ones showing a former full siding (somewhat similar to YRDxe)? Rontombontom (talk) 14:22, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

@Andrybak: Neither uPSLlxe nor uPSLle existed before Useddenim uploaded them in February. It usually makes sense to use the fewest overlays necessary, primarily because they increase the complexity of the diagram. Jc86035 (talk) 07:39, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi there! I was looking for BS icons that have parallel to single + parallel to corner + crossing combined and found this category: Category:BSicon/railway/parallel lines/tunnel/uw/shift/one quarter/crossing/curve. I would've used overlays if I'd found an appropriate bridge formation icon (which I hadn't) Could anyone please edit those files to make them solid #be2d2c (the color of STR)? The ePSL icon series shows a line with a siding on which the siding has been closed but through track remains open, but there are no icons in the xPSL series.   • @Tuvalkin: I think it would be possible to bring them into the standard naming scheme (possibly with minor design changes to make them slightly more like the   (BL) icons). I think it would ultimately be less disruptive than trying to replace and delete all of these icons, since they've now been in use for more than three years. I would use the renaming of the CPIC set to XBHF/XINT/XACC as a model for this group of icons. (Only eleven capital letters are currently used as prefixes, so B and O would be available for BL and ODIC respectively.) Jc86035 (talk) 17:07, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
  • That’s nice of you, but meh. These guys insist that   (CPIC) is not good for their diagrams for reasons and therefore we have not only to accept a separate group of icons with the same semantics, but even to create the icons they are unwilling or unable to create. That’s how we cater to those who never did anything to improve the project overall. On the other hand, we as a project team went ahead to create and implement new ways to do some things, some times against the express wishes of some of us (at least mine), and for that there was no leniency and all bow to progress and to uniformity. (I mean: the syntax of Routemap, the naming of horizontal parallel lines, the color of ACC roundels, the color of black lines, the double meaning of "g", the forced homogenization of experimental names in road icons, etc.) So I’ll say again: Meh. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 17:18, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

@91.193.176.42:   (exCONTf+l)   (exCONTf+r)   (exCONTg+l)   (exCONTg+r)   (exCONTl+f)   (exCONTl+g)   (exCONTr+f)   (exCONTr+g) were all created 6½ years ago on 2013-08-22. The ODIC icons (1) don't conform to the standard BSicon naming rules, which are fully detailed at BSicon/Catalogue; (2) don't match anything else, symbolically; and (3) are only used for Moscow Metro route diagrams on ru:WP (where they originated, and have only spread to) be:WP, uk:WP and ko:WP. Swapped icons

I'm not sure if it used to be common to discuss things like this, but in the interest of not confusing future editors: I've swapped around eight icons which were uploaded with incorrect titles by Imperator3733 in 2015 and then renamed incorrectly to their current titles by me in 2017. The four swapped pairs are:

  •   (eSPLr+2) and   (xSPLr+2)
  •   (eSPLl+4) and   (xSPLl+4)
  •   (ueSPLr+2) and   (uxSPLr+2)
  •   (ueSPLl+4) and   (uxSPLl+4)

The reason that the titles were incorrect is that the primary/secondary convention for parallel tracks that start at a corner and finish at a side is based on the corner and not the side, c.f.   (evSTR2+r) and   (evSTRl+4). Typically it would be more appropriate to do a set of round-robin renames for each pair, but I just uploaded over the existing titles since none of the icons were in use in diagrams. New icons by AlgaeGraphix

@AlgaeGraphix: Having looked at your more recent BSicon uploads, I think there are some things that would be worth discussing, mainly since the pertinent conventions haven't really been established yet. In reverse chronological order:

  •   (utPSLra) and similar:
    • The tunnel dashes aren't aligned with the buffer stop rectangle (that is, the rectangle doesn't appear to be centered). I think the dashes should probably be moved, but it would also be possible to move the rectangle.
    • Some existing icons, like   (utPSLa), use 50px dashes for singled tunnels. The majority of icons where this is relevant do use 40px, though.
That's what happens when you design icons in a rush or when you're tired. I started with an existing PSL icon and just carried on from there, but I have no objection to adjustments. I would suggest centering the block onto the line and leaving the line geometry the same as for the non-tunnel versions (which might also need to be checked for positioning).
  •   (tvSTR3e):
    • Parallel tunnel icons, including   (utvSTR+1a), have tended to use a smooth curve for the tunnel portal. I think it would be appropriate to keep doing that here.
    • The typical large portal stroke width is 60px, not 50px. It would be possible to change that, as YLSS attempted to some years ago, but it would involve thousands of reuploads.
I drew that from scratch; I should have looked harder for an existing icon to adapt. Mea culpa.
  •   (exlGRZr):
    • Useddenim did try to rename the GRZ and lGRZ series, but didn't manage to do it consistently and didn't get around to fixing it (see 1, 2). I think using the M prefix for these would be better than using the l prefix.
I missed those two discussions, but I agree that MGRZ is better than lGRZ. (Note to self: add to "To do" list.)
  •   (hSHI1ra) and similar:
    • I personally prefer to do all of the coordinates to two decimal places. You can approximate sections of Bézier curves fairly well by using Inkscape's stroke-to-path and intersection functions; the stroke-to-path function is fairly erratic but I've found that increasing the number of nodes on the path (that is, selecting all nodes and then inserting new nodes) before using that function makes it a lot more accurate.
    • The angles in the formations are off.   (hSTRa) uses 50 down and 70 across. Inkscape should help here, since it'll calculate the coordinates for you and you can measure the angle that the lines need to be rotated by.
I don't have Inkscape, as I use a Mac. Icons are already 500 pixels – is it really really necessary for 1/50,000 precision? I will make sure to follow the 50/70 formation ends from now on.
@AlgaeGraphix: I've been using Inkscape on a Mac for about seven years. It was necessary to use XQuartz until a few months ago, but the 1.0 beta finally runs natively. It's not really necessary to use that precision, but it does basically eliminate the chance that otherwise well-drawn icons will have visual problems at 500px, and it allows a tolerance for slight geometric differences between icons (especially for icons with diagonal parallel lines). For mass uploads and reuploads it also reduces the chance that someone in the future reuploads the images all over again in order to increase the precision of the coordinates. (For what it's worth, YLSS used two decimal places for stroke-dasharray and one decimal place for everything else. I've used two decimal places for all of my uploads, excluding some elevated station icons where I used three decimal places.) Jc86035 (talk) 10:45, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
  •   (exvSTR-STR+rgo) and similar:
    • The formations for these icons needed to be redone as well.
    • As with the other icons using 375px-radius curves, the f and g suffixes should probably be replaced here, but how to do this is unclear since the . operator might not currently be defined in a way that allows it to be used (compare   (uSTR+r.G) and   (uSTR+r~G)). Useddenim didn't implement . awfully consistently, so it's probably worth redefining it at some point.
There's not a lot of room to play with here for the formation. A composite of   (exdKRZu-)&  (exdSTR+r-) doesn't have the same elegance, and the curve name was based on   (exv-STR+rg).
@AlgaeGraphix: If the standard small formation shape doesn't fit at all (I haven't tested it yet), there's always the possibility of using ~FF/~LL icons to show the parts beyond the edges.

  •   (uxtdABZql):
    • Typically the mask of closed tunnel tracks shouldn't affect any open tunnel tracks. Normally this would require two masks, but here one would suffice since the closed track can be drawn without a mask.
    • The dashes should be consistent. That said, I've never liked the tdSTRq dashes, which is why I've generally avoided these icons.
    • I would be fine with switching from elliptical curves to circular curves for these icons, but it should be done consistently.
I've fixed the masking. There is a need for tdSTRq icons, so I go with something that looks right to me. Changing elliptical to circular curves is one of my long-term projects, but because of the number of icons involved it's not something I'm rushing to do.
  •   (HUB4f) and similar:
    • The f suffix is no longer being used this way in other icons. This is fine for the HUB icons, since the suffixes are all generally idiosyncratic, but perhaps there would be something better.
  •   (uexKRW3+r) and similar:
    • Where this is used, a rotated   (dSTR23) would probably work better, but I don't know if it's possible to name it. .f might work; as noted, the . suffixes generally need to be refined a little.
    • This is obviously not a standard KRW icon. In this discussion I proposed making icons which would connect in this way (that is, at an angle of 26.6°), and in this discussion I suggested repurposing the j prefix to do so. This would be fairly complex because of the number of possible lines (which would massively increase due to the increase to nine line orientations for every connection point from the current two to four), so I haven't revisited it since then, but it could be worth creating some of these.
  •   (ud-STRl+1):
    • YLSS used a different shape for   (v-STR4). I think the one-circular-arc-with-the-largest-possible-radius method generally works well, so I'd be inclined to keep using it here.
  •   (vRP2HST):
    • Is this naming a good idea?   (ZTRl) and   (vISLAND) exist, as does   (bRP2-8r), so it might be better to draw influence from those instead.
    • The stroke-dasharray should be recalculated.

I'd emphasize that this is not intended as criticism, even if it might seem a little like it; I see this more as a useful opportunity to improve the existing naming and geometry conventions. (The pace has dropped quite a bit, since Useddenim has been completely inactive since August and I've been spending a lot less time around here as well.) Jc86035 (talk) 14:26, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

@Vunz: How do these narrow lines icons fit into the standard naming schemes? w is nominally used as a prefix already because of   (w), so it would be better to use a different letter for a new prefix, and I think it would make more sense to extend the n prefix syntax. (If you were using w to indicate triple parallel lines, I've been using vv for that for a while.)   (uexABZngn2) provides a useful precedent and I've renamed some of the icons in the category based on that syntax, but I'm not sure about the others. @AlgaeGraphix: In this case I think we would use vÜST since there are four junctions. Useddenim uploaded   (vÜSTl+gr), which is probably named correctly and would be applicable here, but without a prefix like nn we would probably still be using 100px-width lines like with   (tvÜST). (Even with the prefix we still wouldn't be able to specify the exact orientation of the junction – unless we were to limit possible icons to these specific orientations – because of the other potential permutations of ways in which the narrow lines could be positioned and could cross over each other.) We also don't really have a standard geometry for narrow line crossings, and we don't seem to have a solidified convention for whether or not they need formations (we have both   (ÜWBl) and   (FOWl)).
Vunz also uploaded most of the icons in this category, and I actually renamed some of them at one point, but I don't know if they should be renamed as well. Most of the icons also use opaque white masks instead of transparent ones.
This is generally an area which would clearly benefit from some standardization, but it might be hard to build on what there currently is because of how disorganized it is. I'm also not sure how   (ldBHF-R-) and   (ld-BHF-L) would be named. I understand the purpose (to match a narrow line with a 25px offset), but there isn't an existing naming scheme that would fit them. The option that would make the most sense to me would be to implement my proposal to extend the ~L/~R suffixes to allow for additional fractions (e.g.   (vSTR1~r~6F) has a shift by a sixth of the icon height), so we would have either dBHF~7/10R or dvBHF-~5R. (The l suffix might be optional since the track wouldn't be visible.) The other option based on recent proposals would be to revive the extended   (mSTR yellow~teal) syntax (i.e. dvBHF-~), but the tildes could pose problems since the Routemap syntax wouldn't allow them to be used consecutively. @Pechristener: I don't remember if it's explained anywhere, so here's an explanation.
The RDT templates, the BS series (BS-map) and Routemap, allow icons to be overlaid, so for example in Routemap tSTRq!~STR puts STR above tSTRq. If those icons are not the same width, for example STRq!~dSTR, the icons only share a left border (that is, they are both aligned based on their left edge, and their right edges will be at different positions).
In this case, because the objects don't overlap, you can actually use the half-width icons without overlaying them, e.g. by using   (udBHF) to the left of   (dWASSER). In Routemap, this would be exactly the same as using uvBHF-WASSER; in BS-map, this would be the same except for increasing the BS template number by one (e.g. {{BS3}} instead of {{BS2}}), as well as the number of some of the overlay parameters (e.g. |O6= instead of |O5=). I think in general this group of icons (that is, all of the 90° curves connecting to parallel lines) could use a renaming, but just directly using the ~l/~r and ~L/~R syntax could come at the cost of readability (especially for the icons with two separate lines), so I've sort of avoided the topic of renaming them for a while. This is in spite of the fact that the names clearly don't fit with other icons; they're now the only ones to use the f and g suffixes for forward/back, and there are a bunch of other ad hoc syntax extensions in the same vein for some of the related icons (like   (uvSTRelf),   (vABZ+ra-STR+la),   (vABZgl-STRl), ...).
Vaguely possible options (which aren't mutually exclusive):
  • Renaming everything using standard ABZ syntax, standard parallel lines syntax and the tilde suffixes (no v suffix, no swapping l/r suffixes to indicate positions, no f/g suffixes).   (v-STRlf) would become vSTRl~l~F.   (vSTRlf-) would become vSTRl~r.   (vABZq+rl) would become vABZq+r-ABZq+l. This would have the disadvantage of making names harder to read.
  • Extending the SPL, vÜWB, vÜST... syntax (à la   (vÜSTl+gr) or the old   (vSTRgl) format) – or creating new roots based on e.g. ABZ/WYE syntax – to the point that the roots cover all the options.   (v-STRlf) would become v-SPLal~r or -SPLel~l.   (vSTRlf-) would still become vSTRl~r.   (vABZq+rl) would become v[ROOT]f+lr. It would be harder to name some icons that only have one line and icons with curves that have crossing formations.

Hello, could anyone create the icon vexBHF-uKBHFa.svg please ? It should be similar to   (vBHF-uexKBHFa) but should have lighter colour on the heavier rail side (light red) station to indicate it is in a disused or under construction line along with a lighter colour terminus on the light rail (light blue) side. Whenever a given diagram is “upgraded” to Routemap, I stop mantaining it, and when some day the old style templates stop working, I will stop creating and mantaining BS-icon diagrams.

Non-canal navigable waterways

I was thinking about doing some diagrams of navigable natural waterways, such as the Columbia/Snake and Mississippi/Ohio port systems. I have an idea for representing these natural and navigable waterways, and wanted to get some feedback on my idea. Given that canals are based on   (uSTR), and non-navigable natural waterways have   (WASSER), I was thinking about creating variants of   (uWASSER), using the dark blue color of the "u" prefix, but the geometry of WASSER elements for these navigable, natural waterways. I have not devised a naming scheme for WECHSEL or BRÜCKE icons yet. Both of them use the "uW" prefix for separate WASSER and "u" lines interacting, rather than WASSER geometry with "u" coloring. Paddle boat icons for use with the Murray and Darling Rivers

I'm after some icons for use with the Murray and Darling Rivers in Australia. I want to indicate there is a connection to a boat, but not a modern one like   (BOOT).
I need something similar to how   (MBAHN) can be used for tourist railways:

  • Paddle boat (side wheel not back wheel) both normal and ex
  • Barge (to indicate wreck of a barge) both normal and ex

Parallel crossing rotated 45°

Hi there! I've come across   (KRXvu) and now I'm wondering if it's possible to have a set of icons that would look like   (-KRZu) /   (-KRZo) rotated 45°? E.g. by removing   (vSTR3+1~l) part from the   (KRXvu) and moving its bridge segments to enclose the upper line. Oh, that would be quite exotic What I need is
to combine a 90° crossing e.g.   (KRZr+1u),   (KRZ2+ru),   (KRZ3+lu),   (KRZl+4u)
with a respective extra junction   (nSTRr),    (nSTR+r),    (nSTR+l),    (nSTRl)
 
 (KRZ2+ru※ nSTR+r)  — looks bad since its bridge part is too wide compared to   (kKRZ2+ru+r) and thus I cannot really use overlays.

Inclined planes

I needed two icons for inclined planes for the Lancaster Canal Tramroad. I have therefore uploaded   (exPLANEd) and   (exPLANEu), based on   (uPLANEd) and   (uPLANEu), but with the colour changed from waterways blue to dead railway pink. I have not yet added them to the waterways icons page, and have put them in Category:Icons for canal descriptions.
