Hello! As you know I’m renaming the road×rail icons, and some of the almost unused redirects from the old names are used in your page(s). (See example: uRP4h.)

What do you want me to do with those? Ask for deletion as it is and make the redlink in your page? Or edit your page to point to the new name?

-- Tuválkin 12:46, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, just go ahead and let them redlink. AlgaeGraphix (talk) 00:20, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

filefinder.js

[edit]

{{Helpme|JavaScript}} en:User:Bility wrote this .js script for me almost two years ago (and hasn't made any contributions since), but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped working correctly. Can anyone debug it to determine the problem? (Also, while you're "poking around under the hood", would it be possible to have it default to checking the last seven days, but have an option to allow searching a specific date range?)
Thanks, AlgaeGraphix (talk) 20:30, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Will you pay me? ;-) No, just a bad joke. It's really a lot to do here at Commons. I hope, I don't forget your request. Anyone else feeling boring is welcome to take it as long as I didn't indicate that I would start.
I accept under one Condition: You promise writing a Help-page for the tool like Help:RenameLink. Will you? -- Rillke(q?) 23:23, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. Which tool is it? AlgaeGraphix (talk) 17:47, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Let's shake on it. I was conferring to the script I will write for you as a tool. It will have more flexible filtering options (not yet). -- Rillke(q?) 00:15, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your delivery: Commons:User scripts/BSIcon (launch directly). It automatically stops after 300 queries but it would be better if you press stop before. No need to write a documentation for this stub yet :-) -- Rillke(q?) 00:15, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A promising start! Will the output format be choosable? Also, another thought: will the "BSicon" prefix be hard-coded, or will ther be a text box so that it can be changed and make the tool usable to search for any family of files? AlgaeGraphix (talk) 00:13, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is indeed what I had in mind (among other filtering options for the recent changes). But this requires more coding; especially the user interface always takes a lot of time to design. If you would like to see a specific format, let me know as this requires less efforts. -- Rillke(q?) 17:50, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My number one priority is a script that functions. Second would be the ability to select a specific date rage. Choosing output format would be nice, but not essential. Any other bells and whistle are a bonus. Does that help? AlgaeGraphix (talk) 19:15, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bots

[edit]

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Do you think it's a good idea to retire the catalogue, given that the script is getting increasingly unreliable (it's missed at least 500 uploads and page moves in the last few weeks)? I think JJMC89's changelog is working well enough to replace it, even if the pages take slightly longer to load. Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

15:11, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing is good, improving past records even better, but JJMC89's changelog documents all edits, which is nice — but a catalog of changed and new images is necessary. And AlgaeGraphix’s work, even faulty as it is now, is much better than nothing. -- Tuválkin 16:15, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Tuvalkin: Why is it entirely necessary if all of the uploads are also in the changelog? I know it helps by filtering the information, but it just can't work if the script collects less than 5% of uploads and page moves for whatever reason. I guess we could ask JJMC89 to update AlgaeGraphix's pages as well (or make a changelog going back from January 20). Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

15:48, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Tuvalkin: JJMC89's bot is now creating four different logs (changes, uploads, moves, deletions), which is quite nice given that the unified changelog is currently not rendering due to the large number of uses of {{BS-q}}. Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

I noticed it yesterday, and split pages is good — it really helps monitorizing new uploads. Is it possible to have an overview area for each section, showing all its icons at a glance? -- Tuválkin 09:30, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update: JJMC89 bot is now going through everything from September 2006 (except the "all changes" log) and is currently at the start of 2011. Jc86035 (talk) 15:17, 11 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AlgaeGraphix, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Uploads

[edit]

Hi. Why did you blank out a redirect and upload over it? I'm trying to understand so we can fix the issue. Please respond with the {{Ping}} template. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:49, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Magog the Ogre: Compare   (GRZr),   (exGRZr),   (lGRZr) &   (exlGRZr). Notice anything out of place? More than 48 hours after I requested the {{Speedy}} deletion of the unused redirect to allow uploading of a new, correct icon nothing had been done, so I took care of it myself (perhaps not in the most elegant manner). So, please revert your "undo" so that the correct icon is at exlGRZr. AlgaeGraphix (talk) 02:20, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can undo it. But make sure you add a license and source this time, please. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:59, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AlgaeGraphix, I've moved your speedy deletion request to a classical deletion request as requesting a speedy deletion for a bad categorized file seems to me a bit excessive. The standard DR is here: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Branc carretera groga de carretera verda.png. Best regards, -- AlNo (discuter/talk/hablar/falar) 08:27, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BSicon

[edit]

Hi AlgaeGraphix, I noticed that you've had problems on gallery pages. I changed the abuse filter by whitelisting 'BSicon', so it should work now. Best, --Achim (talk) 09:45, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Achim55: Thank you (although I did manage to figure out a creative work-around). AlgaeGraphix (talk) 13:25, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New uploads

[edit]

Thanks for the work you've done in expanding the BSicon catalogue. There are some things I did want to note, though.

  •   (ehvBHF~L) is incorrect for two reasons: the formations should be touching the circle, and the name implies that the other half of the parallel lines station would be shown beyond the icon edge.   (hv-BHF) has the correct railings. The correct icon title would be ehv-BHF(r), since this is the shortest possible way to name it using the new standard suffixes.   (hveBHF-STR) is also already available, along with   (hdvBHF~LLL).
✓ Done Fixed & moved.
  •   (vABZg3u-vABZg3) is incorrect (or nonstandard) for three reasons: the convention I used for renaming non-KRZ crossings was to always use the o suffix, v is used twice, and the geometry of 45° curves depends on whether they are named as single or double lines. While it would be convenient to introduce standard syntax for these parallel lines icons, perhaps it would be better to choose a different format and not necessarily v...-v... (although it does actually avoid naming conflicts with other existing icons, so it does have that going for it).
If we were willing adopt the X suffix (as I suggested last week in Talk:BSicon/New icons and icon requests#New ABZ icons for parallel lines), then the name of this icon would simplify to vABZg3Xo.
  • The end of the formation on   (hvSTRc3a) is too short.   (hSTRa) uses 70px/50px. I understand you probably did it to allow for a crossing to be shown, but it would be better to preserve consistent icon geometry if possible.
I've uploaded a new version of   (hvSTRc3a); is it any better?
  •   (dKRZ3+1h~G) is not correctly named. If it didn't have the formation at the corner it would be named dKRZc4vh, but I think at the moment it would have to be something like dSTR+hdvSTRc4~l (or perhaps dKRZc4vh(L), if that makes sense).
My thinking was, start with   (dKRZ3+1u-), add the formation (h), and move the crossing point back to the top edge (~G).
  • The diagonal parallel station icons you uploaded don't seem to have the correct geometry. The distance between diagonal parallel lines is 235.702px (500(√2)/3).
Why don't they maintain the standard 250px separation? I did create them from the existing   (uvSTR3+1) icon. (There's some tangential discussion of line separation here, here and here.)
  • At w:en:Template:Hamburg-Altona link line:
    • The S-Bahn icon for Hamburg-Altona should have a new icon, lBHF3-R. I did upload   (lBHF3) and the rest of that icon group, but neglected to do the interchange stations (it should really have been done ages ago).
The existing icons are close enough; it's only a two or three pixel difference.
  • Tunnel–tunnel crossings should ideally indicate whether tunnels cross over or under each other.
I've changed that, assuming that the new tunnel goes below the old one.
  • The flying junctions after Hamburg-Altona and after Hamburg-Barmbek are missing the corner pieces, e.g.   (dKRZc1o). Furthermore, if two adjacent crossings are continuous they should use the parallel icons, such as   (vKRZ3+1u).
That's an easy icon to overlook, but I've fixed the crossings.
  • For the junction before Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the icon you've used isn't a tunnel portal.
✓ Done Fixed (although I had to use   (o) to shoehorn the PORTAL in).
  • For the junction after Hamburg Hasselbrook, I think it would be appropriate to create actual junction icons between kvSTR and normal diagonals, since it's already been shown to be desirable in at least one other diagram. However, I have no idea what they would be called.
Me either, and I don't really want to start poking at what would be a very large set.

Jc86035 (talk) 13:35, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's kinda remarkable that fixing up one diagram would result in creating approximately 150 new icons! AlgaeGraphix (talk) 20:48, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
On diagonal parallel lines:   (ehvHST3+1) is clearly misaligned with the adjacent icons on w:en:Template:Hamburg-Altona link line. Looking at the source it looks like you've used 176.8 instead of 166.67 (I haven't checked all the things that would need to be changed); compare   (evHST3+1). Also, the icon title is missing the h, and the S-Bahn circle should probably be lvSHST3+1~l, à la   (lvHSTc4~l).
On the X suffix: The main issue for me was actually that we don't use a lot of capital letters as suffixes, although it is sort of hard to see the X prefix being used as a suffix. If you would be able to define clearly how the new suffix would be applicable to various icons, I think that would be very helpful. (Would it be a separate suffix to the one used for indicating the crossing geometry variation (for   (STR+l-STRl)), or would the same suffix indicate both?) Jc86035 (talk) 08:03, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I also somehow didn't notice that all the corner pieces have the formation a little too close to the track. The straight ones should be easy enough to fix in a few minutes, but I'm not sure if the ones with start/end formations should keep their start/end positions (since usually they're in the middle of the visible portion of the track by default). I think @f/@g could be useful in this case. Jc86035 (talk) 15:35, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Crossing formations

[edit]

Would you be able to redo   (utbvvSHI5lo+l--) using the 40px crossing formations (e.g.   (kKRZ3+lo),   (dKRZc2o))? Jc86035 (talk) 12:29, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback!

[edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
