- @Sophia Sheridan: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to have the logo designer/photographer send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:45, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

- Comments: I have permissions for the photo and it is already in the public domain. I am new to editing so would just like to know what the problem was and how I should go about making suck edits in the future. Thanks 45.72.199.214 22:10, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- None of the filter log links you provided have any entries, and in any case, you cannot upload anything unless you are registered and logged in, which you are not.
- But searching through all the entries in the log, I'm guessing you may be Xanthopan (talk • contribs • block log • filter log) who tried to upload File:Professor Judith (Judy) H Myers.jpg (hist • logs • abuse log) and File:Professor Judy Myers.jpg (hist • logs • abuse log). If so, the filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations.
- If you did indeed personally create this photo, as you stated when you attempted to upload it ("This is my own work" and "I attest that I own the copyright on this file"), the expectation is that you should be able to provide a full-resolution version. But since you state above that you "have permissions" for the file, I assume that it's not really your own work. You also state that it's in the public domain. If that were really true, you wouldn't need permission. But perhaps you are confusing "published" with "public domain". In any case, you can't claim that something is your own work if it's not.
- Who actually created the photo, and what sort of permission did they give? —LX (talk, contribs) 09:04, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

- If you had just added the {{speedy}} tag at the top of the file description without also blanking out the rest of the page, you would not have been affected by the filters which prevents page blanking, and you wouldn't have been shown the error message which told you "Don't blank pages." Also, if you would like to invoke the speedy deletion criterion which allows uploaders to request deletion of recently uploaded files, you should perform the edit while logged in as Raulbutuc. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:16, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

If you did indeed personally create this photo, as you stated when you attempted to upload it, the expectation is that you should be able to provide a full-resolution version rather than the 960×640 pixel miniature version that you tried to upload. Abuse filters for captions edit: and depicts
@Steinsplitter and Jeff G.: unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe any abuse filters have been created for captions. I don't think the current filters know how to look at Wikibase, so a new filter or two might be needed. Here's an example of a Wikidata filter (or Filter 34) along the lines of what captions might need, I'm told. Do y'all think we can put some filters together? Is there any help or anything you might need from me to do so? Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:19, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

- @Jeff G.: I thought you might have some insight into how to get a filter created. The process for requesting one is to simply start a thread here, but I've seen little detail of the writing and implementation side of things. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 01:18, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

- @Keegan (WMF): Please apply those filter automatically to wikibase, so we do not have to create new filters (we have to keep the condition limit under control). Or does wikibase has a own namespace number, so we can just add that namespace to the relevant filters? --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:57, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Steinsplitter: here's what I've learned:
- Structured data lives in the file namespace.
- I don't think any new filters are needed specifically for captions. You can modify existing appropriate filters to add the new labels for captions using the examples I linked to from Wikidata as guidance.
- New filters will be needed soon for depicts and other statements BUT
- The development team is willing to help write and maintain the new filters, and make sure that they are not too expensive to run.
- So do you think modifying existing filters to add captions labels is something you can do? The development team can help do it if you need them to instead. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:57, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Keegan (WMF): Okay, i think i can do that. But from the filters you linked above, it see no special setup for wikibase. If the namespace is the same as filenamespace (article_namespace) i think no notifications are needed (if article text etc is scanned, if not we have to change that). But happy to apply modifications for the development team. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:32, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

- KH Play: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. If you did indeed personally create this photo, the expectation is that you should be able to provide a full-resolution version rather than the 649×649 pixel miniature version that you tried to upload.
- Also note that we generally do not need you to upload photographs of yourself. If you are planning to contribute actively to a Wikimedia project, you may upload a small number of personal photographs for use on your user page, but if all you want to do here is to promote yourself (and I notice that you have been blocked indefinitely from English Wikipedia for doing just that), then we don't need any photos of you. —LX (talk, contribs) 12:42, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, it may look fuzzy when scaled down, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. - Marinamaric: So if she created it and own it, why did you declare that "This is my own work" and "I attest that I own the copyright on this file"? It sounds like the filter worked as intended by preventing you from uploading someone else's work as your own, which constitutes copyright infringement and is illegal. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:52, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

- Hi Romainbo21! The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution and PNG uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations.
- Unfortunately, because of the number of copyright violations, the filter has had to be defined quite broadly, meaning it sometimes stops uploads that aren't copyright violations. And unfortunately, instead of getting rid of the flawed upload form and directing users here to Commons (which the overwhelming majority of volunteers here would prefer), the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that leading users down this blind alley is a good idea. Please upload the file directly here on Commons to avoid these problems. Cheers, —LX (talk, contribs) 19:22, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down, so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:48, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

- Comments: Please do something about this goddawful tool. This isn't the first time it has made blatantly false accusations about me, but it is the most important; there's a time-sensitive deletion debate going on. As far as I can tell it's designed to exclude some people (who, exactly, I'm not sure of) from contributing towards anything it deems risque. Why is this robot the moral denominator for this project? - @My Name is Madness: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/56 by trying to refer to COM:PENIS without having made 50 edits yet. The best way to defeat that filter is to refer to that redirect's target Commons:Nudity#New uploads instead. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:53, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
- You're telling me I'm not allowed to talk the way you are because you're established and I recently registered this account? Not only that, but nobody will even post my comment, but insist I refactor it? In order to avoid a common shortcut that everybody else gets to use? Wow. Just, wow. What a humiliating 'welcome'. Madness Darkness 18:59, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
- @My Name is Madness: I posted it for you. Recent registration does not affect this filter, just editcount. I wanted to give you the courtesy of the opportunity to refactor rather than assuming you wanted someone to post it for you. I'm sorry if that offended you. Assuming you wanted File:Misandry upon a bathroom sign.jpg fixed, I did that for you, too. - Thank you, however, the instructions were very clear: If the machine is wrong, come here for a fix. So I came here, and was told to go away and refactor my comment to avoid offending a robot. I'm sure you can see why that is hard to swallow. It also promises the edits are "being tracked" but only when I complained, and then complained again when my first entry was brushed off, has anything happened. Seems to me there's a deep systemic mismatch between what we're being told will happen by the code, and what actually gets done by human beings. Am I to understand that for nine years any number of people like me have waited for the promised tracking to produce a human fix only for nothing to happen? All the same, thank you again for finally rising above all that to do the right thing. Madness Darkness 22:08, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
- @My Name is Madness: You're welcome. The tracking referred to in MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-obscenities-in-caps is just our regular Abuse filter log, which for this filter has had 7,599 hits. Only Administrators are allowed to change this filter or take other actions like blocking based upon such logs, and such actions are rare. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 22:36, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: It probably shouldn't say that, then; it's very misleading, and gives the impression somebody will correct it when misbehaved. Madness Darkness 22:38, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
- @My Name is Madness: I think that language in MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-obscenities-in-caps is more of a threat to the vandals than a promise to the innocent. - @Jeff G.: (I'm sorry, I seem to have forgotten the correct way to outdent...) I guess I interpreted it as both; like, a promise this thing is monitored. If COM:PENIS itself can be scrubbed off the list and leave the rest intact, that would certainly be some good progress. Madness Darkness 23:04, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

- @MountGamer: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down and may look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:29, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, please provide a better name than "File:Thumbnail2.jpg". — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:20, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

- @NGAofficeofcomms: Hi, and welcome. I guess this is you, but please login. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 23:37, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

- @Raulca9: Hola, y bienvenidos.
- Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please feel free to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready, having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 16:36, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
