Renaming categories

Hi. I created a Vendéean leaders category by pasting a heading from the English wikipedia, but it seems I also cut/pasted a spelling mistake since the extra e should not exist. However, there is a slight difficulty since both spellings Vendéan and Vendean occur ; Vendean might be the better choice. Could you help me round this problem ? We can easily move categories and all its content and subcategories, you dont have to do this manually, just give instructions to move Category:Vendéean leaders to Category:Vendéan leaders or Category:Vendean leaders. The english description is prefered for categories, but the article w:en:War in the Vendée uses both, so some english speaker should help with the spelling --Martin H. Removing Images Off Commons?

Hi Frazer, it depends. Normaly we fulfill user requested deletion for the reasons privacy purposes, accidential upload of wrong file and superseeded by a newly uploaded better or corrected file. The only reason I can see with your uploads is, that some of your upload superseedes some other:

• the .tif file is not working for Wikimedia, we only accept .tif for restauration purposes - for photos we use .jpg and for illustrations .png or .svg.
• Your upload File:Phx top.PNG is missing a license.

You should just say here which upload you want to have deleted and I see how I can help you. --Martin H. (talk) 14:22, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Preview (thumbnail) not showing

I've got a problem with the preview of one of my pictures: File:Bokö1.jpg. When I check the file page the picture doesn't show and it also doesn't show in my gallery where I put it. If I click on it to view the full version it loads, but the preview is empty. It says "Size of this preview: 800 × 135 pixels" but there's nothing there. What's wrong? problem with .tif

The file format .tif is only accepted for recreation purposes because archival material from libraries like the Library of Congress is often available as .tif. The software is not able to thumbnail .tif files, you should export your image to the prefered file format. --Martin H. (talk) 00:24, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes. Regulary use {{badname|newname.jpg}} on the .tif or in any case you uploaded an image under a badname (typo, wrong identification, ...) and an administrator will delete. In this case not needed, I will care about it. --Martin H. (talk) 01:38, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Using an image in Wikipedia

Flickr, copyright and the permission of the author

I want to upload this photo of an artwork (located outside of Museum of Art, Boston) [1] or this version [2] to be used in a recent article I've written on English Wiki on the artist. I've contacted the person who took the photos and they said they would be quite happy if the photos were used in the Wiki article, and in fact send a precise statement to that effect ("I hereby authorize the use of my photos on Flickr for a Wikipedia article on Stefan Knapp by Radek"). The tag on Flickr says copyright, but the picture taker gives permission - so is it a go? Or is there some way to restrict the image use just to that article or just English wiki?Radeksz (talk) 20:59, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Check out COM:OTRS for information on getting permissions. Specifically, "restricting use to Wikipedia or Wikimedia projects is not acceptable." You need him to release it under a free license. Also, you need to take into account the creator of the artwork itself. They hold copyright over it also and would need to release permissions in order for it to be uploaded here. I just took a look at en:Stefan Knapp and since he is no longer alive to give permissions, the paintings will be under copyright until 70 years from his death (2069) which means you cannot upload those pictures, sorry. --Yarnalgo (talk) 21:25, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Now both of my points are mentioned by Yarnalgo, edit conflict. My answer: No, the photo is a derivative work of a recent artwork on a sculpture located in Boston. The painter died 1996, so his artwork is still in copyright and it will be a long time - 2067 it enters the public domain. The artwork is located in the public, but only photos of buildings are exempted from artists copyrights in the U.S., Sculptures and paintings are not covered by COM:FOP#United States. Point two is, that the Flickr photographer must give permission to everyone to use his photographic work for every purpose. A Wikimedia/Wikipedia only permission for educational purposes only is not ok. --Martin H. (talk) 21:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks. Related question - this guy painted a lot of murals. If I go and take a photo of a "building" that just happens to have his mural on it do the same rules apply? What if the mural is inside a building? Specifically he has murals at Heathrow Airport and I will be there shortly and thought about taking a photo or two for the article. Also no. Im not very familiar with UK copyright, but according to COM:FOP#United Kingdom and considering a mural a graphic work photographes are not ok on Commons even if the work is permanently placed in the public. Also the definition of "public place" various from country to country, some might call an airport a public place, but the borderline of controversy is settled much below. See Commons:De minimis. If the art is not the primary subject it may be okay, but don't go using this as a runaround for depicting the art. This image might be useful for the article on the airport, but not really the article on the artist or work. Dcoetzee (talk) 23:33, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

A piece of a 1862 release of "Mužyckaja praŭda" newspaper

I've found the subject, but I don't know its license. Is it wrong to make a little image with a title ("Mužyckaja praŭda") from that big scan of the newspaper release? And what license should I choose?

PS: That newspaper was released in 1862.

Hi Wizardist, assuming, that the illustration, a photo or engraving, was also created in 1862 it is now 147 years old. So it is very unlikely, that the image is still in copyright (probably lifetime of the author +70 years). You can scan this 1862 newspaper and anything on it and upload it as {{PD-old}}, please indicte the source - the newspapers name, publication date, volume number if exists, author name if indicated. --Martin H. Image name move

Logo Upload, correct licence and how to change afterwards

Hello,

ive uploaded a logo (German weekly newspaper Freitag) but i think i havent uploaded this logo under the right licence. Could please someone help me to find out what licence i need and how i add the licence to this logo.

Seems that i havent understand how to use wikipedia or wikimedia.

The logo was original an jpeg and i did the svg version of it.

You have selected the correct license. Since it only consists of text, it is ineligible for copyright. However, please add appropriate categories to the image. --Yarnalgo (talk) 23:36, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Can I upload photos taken from a newspaper?

I took some photos with my camera of newspaper pages. In these pictures you can see advertisments. I want to upload these pictures for an educational article. Can I do it? --Vikinat (talk) 17:42, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Not to Commons, you can't, at least unless the newspaper is really, really old (e.g. published before 1923 in the U.S., or even older if published elsewhere). Help Needed

I have added a file at File:File-Flickr spine 472065553--General Tso's Chicken rotate 90 deg.jpg. It is the same image of File:Flickr spine 472065553--General Tso's Chicken.jpg, except that it was rotated 90 degrees. I've tagged the original image with {{rotate|270}}; a bot should be along shortly to rotate it. I've also deleted your rotated version as a low-resolution duplicate. I was suprised when a picture I uploaded from flickr was speedy deleted.. please let me know what was wrong... this is the picture...[[3]] and this is the copyright statement.... It's not considered free enough for Commons, since it doesn't allow derivative works. See Commons:Licensing and freedomdefined:Definition. If you'd like to keep the picture on Commons, you could try asking the author to relicense it under an acceptable license, such as Attribution-ShareAlike. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 22:02, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

You won't have this problem if you only search Flickr with {{Flickr free}}, since that search only finds images with licenses allowable on Commons. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of Flickr's billions of photos have the right licenses, but that's still a lot.

• Search Flickr for images with the keywords: Caroline Flint under these licenses: cc-by or cc-by-sa - again unfortunately, this search finds no suitably free photos of the person in your image.

Not without a fair-use rationale. An image stipulating no derivative works is not free enough on the English Wikipedia either. See also en:Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags/Deprecated#Non-free_Creative_Commons_licenses. PeterSymonds (talk) 15:53, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Sometimes the creator of a photo chose a restrictive license without knowing the arguments for and against it. See File:BD-propagande-2 (en).jpg. Also: Commons and the various language Wikipedias have many contributors around the world who will sometimes take photos on request. If the subject of your photo makes frequent public appearances in populated areas, perhaps you can find a fellow user who can take a photo and license it suitably for Commons. See COM:L and Commons:Image casebook#Trademarks. Some examples are in: Category:Logos. If the logo is in fact under copyright, Commons will not accept it unless the copyright holder releases the logo under a suitable free license (such as CC-BY-SA; see COM:L for details). --Teratornis (talk) 21:56, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Insofar as you allow commercial use, derivative, and all kind of other works, you can upload your logo here. As long as you are the copyright holder you may upload it under any free license you choose. Whether or not it is a trademark is irrelevant, as far as we are concerned; but if it is a registered trademark, you may choose to place the {{Trademark}} tag in the image description to remind people of this. Need Help With Problem With Getting Replacement Password.

I have forgotten my pass word for my "Cristellaria" account at Wikimedia Commons. The problem is that the "E-mail new passwork" button" on the "UserLogin Log in / create account" web page at http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin did not mail me a new password after I requested a new password. I have done several times, and having to wait 24 hours between each try, and an email was sent to neither my inbox nor my spam folder for my email account. If Wikimedia refuses to send me a new password, how do i get this fixed?

Is it? I think, the user did not enable the email function in the settings so the "send a new password" maybe will not work. But the (logged in) User once added his Email to the his Userpage, so maybe a burocrat (or steward? Hi Cristellaria, the problem is that you never configured an email address for your account. You put your email address on your user page but this is not the same. Hence, Special:UserLogin couldn't send a new password to your address. Unfortunately we cannot help you here and you will have to create a new account. Sorry. Direct access to the database is required, i.e. only developers can do that. Given that this is an account with 82 edits in total, I do not think that this is worth to trouble them.

Older version

The link goes to an revision of File:Fernandez-Virgin of the Navigators.jpg, see the Version history at the bottom of the description page. I dont know whats the original is, looking right or left. Please keep the original under this filename and upload, if you want, the mirrored version to someting like File:Fernandez-Virgin of the Navigators mirrored.jpg. Disappearing Photos

I just uploaded several photos to Commons yet they have not appeared in my gallery. Yet if I try to upload again I am asked if I want to overwrite the file. They are there somewhere... Ah.. later Half answered my own question by going, in frustration, to "my contributions", and finding the pics there. Still not in gallery.

The Gallery is an external tool working on the Toolserver S2, there is an estimated replication lag of ~12 hours (and growing). So you have to rely on your Contributions or your Upload log for the moment. --Martin H. (talk) 22:33, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

derivitive work - commons cant find license of original

I downloaded a map from commons. When I tried to upload my modification (as a derivative work), I got the following error message:

Sorry, your images can't be merged!

The licenses are incompatible or the licenses can't be detected. See above for all license tags the tool found for this images:

Deleting my own image

Normaly you can't. You can request a deletion and let the communitiy decide. See Commons:Deletion policy and Commons:Deletion requests. However, you have uploaded only one image, File:Timpani Range Individual.JPG which you released to the public domain. It is not offensive or causing a liability to you. Editing MY OWN file

Recently, a file I created was moved from en -> commons (for some reason which still hasn't been explained - it just showed up that the original had been deleted one morning). Now, despite still being listed as the author, I can't update this file. This seems more than faintly ridiculous. What do I need to do to be able to edit my own file, which is now incorrect?Jlsa (talk) 12:53, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Transferring a file to Commons allows other Wikipedias to use it. Regarding your file, users newly registered cannot upload a new version of a file; they have to wait for 4 days, if I remember correctly. This is intended as a precaution against vandals. Unfortunately, it also annoys regular users who just wish to help. If you upload your new version under a different name, I'll perform the update for you. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 13:05, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

To understand why someone moved your image to Commons, see w:Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. Short answer: although the English Wikipedia is the largest, it only accounts for about 1/4 of the total size of all language Wikipedias. By moving the image to Commons, we make it easily usable by the other 3/4 of Wikipedia users. Since Wikipedia is inherently a multilingual project, we want all the images that can be on Commons to be on Commons. Some images cannot move to Commons, for example if they are under a fair use rationale. It would be nice if we could adjust the autoconfirmation requirement to make an exception for registered users on other Wikipedias whose images get moved to Commons by someone else. --Teratornis (talk) 19:25, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

How to move to a category?

To change the categories of an image, you need to edit the image description page. Categories look like this: [[Category:Name of the category]]. Just add another one or change an existing entry. You should try to find a more specific category than just music, though. The categories should be as specific as possible. --rimshot^talk 21:49, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

You edit the image page much like you edit questions on this page, by clicking on an edit link. In this case, the edit link is a tab at the top of File:Timpani Range Individual.JPG. Video tutorials?

Let us know if that material explains it well enough. I have only uploaded still images from Flickr, not any videos yet, so I don't have direct knowledge of what to do. If you are (1) the photographer or holder of copyrights or you have (2) the photographer or holder of copyrights written permission to a free license (see Commons:Project scope #3.3) you of course can upload it. Depending on who the photographer is please select the (1) "own work" or the (2) "It is from somewhere else " in Commons:Upload, if it is not your own work please forward the written permission from the photographer/copyright holder to Commons:OTRS where it is reviewed and stored confidentially. --Martin H. Uploading from a 1843 photo folio of Metcalfe

Hi! I tried to upload this file[7], which has two photos. This is part of the folio from "Reminiscences of Imperial Delhi", an album consisting of 89 folios containing approximately 130 paintings of views of the Mughal and pre-Mughal monuments of Delhi, by Thomas Metcalfe , 1843. There is no Copy right issue since it was published in 1843. Many other pictures have been uploaded by other users from this Folio as can be seen under the Title Metcalfe. The information that has been provided in the uploaded photos by others under Licensing is {{PD-Art}}. I tried several times to upload the above first referred file but failed every time. Can some one in the help desk upload for me with the above information? I need to use it for an article I intend to post on "Metcalfe Houses" on wikipedia. Trying to upload new version of file

The bot User:BotMultichill run by User:Multichill recently moved my file from en.wikipedia to commons. I now want to upload a new version. It seems like I would have to do this on the commons page instead of the en.wikipedia page -- right? Will the update be seen on en.wikipedia -- I assume so? Also I just created an account on commons (just to upload a new version). The problem is that my account is too new to upload a new version. You're suggestion is correct. Simply download the file (make sure you click the "Full resolution" thing if it's there) and crop it with any image software. If it is a significant change, like extracting one person out of a photo of five, upload it under a new file name. You can use the derivativeFX tool to help you. If it is a minor change, you can upload it over the old one. This requires you to be autoconfirmed which takes 4 days so if it does not allow you to upload the file with the same name, just wait a couple days. --Yarnalgo (talk) 15:41, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

You can use an image uploaded on Commons in any Wikipedia article exatly as if it was a file uploaded in Wikipedia. Just enter [[File:filename.jpg]] or [[File:filename.jpg|thumb|right]] in your article. Wikipedia software automatically searches on Commons for files not found locally. Should separate images that are really updated versions exist separately or should they be merged?

I usually edit on en wiki so I really don't know the policies here, but based on the en wiki image policies, the following images should have been updated instead of a new image being created as they are essentially updated versions of one another (updated versions). Are separate names for updated versions of the same image allowed on commons or should they be merged? (couldn't find 1 if there was one)

This is pretty common in cases where the other versions may still be useful. But if this is the case, the filenames ideally should be more descriptive than those above. In this case the maps each appear to indicate a different set of facts, or a different point in time, so I would probably keep them all separate. Dcoetzee (talk) 23:24, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Trying to upload new version of file

A bot/or person recently moved 2010_world_cup_qualification.png from en.wikipedia to commons. I again want to upload a new version as the current one is both out of date and has errors, but I still haven't been here long enough to be allowed to do that. I uploaded in to 2010_world_cup_qualification2.png instead. As a side note - can I suggest that bot moves such as this include some notification that authors may not be able to update their own files once they have been moved if they don't have an account in commons - as it is not well known and it's more than a bit annoying to be told you can't update your own stuff because it has been shifted. Regarding the side note: yes, you can suggest just about anything you like. The trick is figuring out where to make a suggestion that will be productive. In this case we need to figure out who or what moved the image, and who we would need to contact about adding the notification you describe. File:2010 world cup qualification.png doesn't seem to make very obvious who moved it to Commons, so I'm not sure who to complain to. Side observations:

• The file clearly belongs on Commons since it is undoubtedly useful to many readers in other languages.
• The busy revision history of the file suggests an unusually high probability of the problem you describe. Most images on Wikipedia don't get updated very often, if at all, so moving them Commons rarely creates the present problem.
• I think we prefer SVG files for maps and diagrams over PNGs. See Category:SVG maps for some examples. That's something to think about for future reference.
• In general, it causes a lot of confusion that Wikipedia allows image uploads even when images are of a type that "should" be on Commons. A large Wikipedia such as the English Wikipedia has many users who only think in terms of that particular Wikipedia, and it is an unwelcome learning burden to figure out Commons in addition. I have no real idea of how to solve this problem, other than to spend some time on the Help desk answering questions. But I think Commons is pretty cool and is worth looking at even if one edits only on one language Wikipedia. And in the larger scheme of things, a four-day wait for autoconfirmation is not much. The world will not stop if a particular image is a few days out of date. Yes, it is annoying, but lots of things are annoying on Wikipedia - what can we expect for a site which we don't even have to pay for? Unlike most annoying things in life, at least in theory it is possible for the individual user to analyze annoyances here and (eventually) fix them.

Full size view disabled?

My PC cannot open images in full size. I've tried File:Gustave Doré - Miguel de Cervantes - Don Quixote - Part 1 - Chapter 1 - Plate 1 "A world of disorderly notions, picked out of his books, crowded into his imagination".jpg, File:Moreau, Gustave - Jupiter und Semele - 1896.jpg (43.5 MB) and File:Denver airport USGA 2002 mod.jpg. I can view smaller sized ones in full size though (e.g. File:Rokko Island Kobe.JPG). This never happened before. I haven't made changes on the computer settings recently.

The error message reads "Die Grafik ... kann nicht angezeigt werden, weil sie Fehler enthält" (the image cannot displayed because it is erroneous). What's wrong? --Mattes (talk) 12:16, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Image modification help

I am writing a Wikipedia article and uploaded File:Michael Phelan photo with signature.jpg for use in it. However, I am dissatisfied with the layout of the image. I would like the signature moved up so it is separated from the photo above by a relatively small amount of space. The big gap doesn't work well. I am not very proficient with graphic programs and am just learning how to use Paint.NET. Modifying the image as I've described is beyond my current abilities. Can someone make the change and reupload? If you told me how I could have done it myself using Paint.NET (i.e. go to W menu → X tool → Y filter → Z result) I'd appreciate it but simply having someone make the change is what I am after. See the links under COM:EIC#Copyright for example Commons:FAQ#Copyright questions. You can require attribution with the cc-by-sa license but I don't know about notification. I'm not sure how a requirement for notification would be compatible with free content, because what if someone wanted to reuse your work but for some reason they could not notify you? (For example, what if you were unreachable for an extended time, or dead? If all goes to plan, Commons will outlive us.) Nothing stops you from requesting notification (see for example the author's request in File:Beside the Tombeau du frere Andree.jpg), but I don't know how to make it binding and still upload your image to Commons. See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia for details on what obligations re-users of content from Commons must fulfill. How to categorize an image

I have uploaded an image It is an image file of a political party logo I have received a request from Wiki to add categories to it I cannot, for the life of me, work out how to do it despite Wiki telling me how easy it is. All I see are a never ending circle of interlinked pages, none of which give me a simple answer but instead refer to yet another round of interlinked pages I can't even find a list of categories

All I want to know is 1) how do I categorise this picture as a political party logo 2) how to I upload it to appear next to an article I uploaded about this political party?

My professor has asked me to scan and upload the first 3 chapters of his book to make it accessible to the public. It was published in 1985 and has been out of print, so he gave me full permission to make the book public domain. How do I go about categorizing its licensing? It's running the risk of being deleted. Inexperienced uploader asking for help with a large file problem

I'd like to upload copies of historical postal route maps originally drawn by Abraham Bradley, Jr., the biography of whom I'm researching on en.wikipedia. Here's a link to such a file: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/h?ammem/gmd:@field(NUMBER+@band(g3700+ct001192)) The maps were originally drawn for the U.S. postal department from 1795 until 1825, so I'm confident they're in the public domain. Unfortunately, the maps are only accessible in the JPEG 2000 format, and are fairly large (17-36 megs) in that format. When converted out at best resolution in JPEG format, the smallest of them exceeds 100 megs. Normally I'd change the compression, but the fine readable detail is a major reason these files have (and had) value. Ideas? BusterD (talk) 15:19, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Those look fine, although I'm a bit disappointed to see how much compression artifacts have damaged the maps. :-( The area around the text has jarring artifacts. Could you try a higher JPEG quality? The upload limit is 100MB so there's still room. Dcoetzee (talk) 18:09, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure there's a 100MB file size limit on uploads. But it seems odd to me - the physical maps must have been very large indeed to generate JP2 files of that size. Like, the size of a large table. Are these seriously single contiguous maps, with no natural divisions along which you can cut them into pieces? Is the map still legible if you downscale it? Palm Pre photos from Flickr

I'm trying to enhance the w:en:Palm Pre with images of the device that aren't CG promo shots. I received authorization from flickr user kevinforeman to use images from his set of Pre images. However, the images have "all rights reserved" on flickr. These are excellent pictures and I think they're perfect for uploading to the Commons, what other steps do I need to go through with the photographer to be able to post the images here? Moving an image to overwrite another

Help! I've uploaded an image File:H1N1 Italy Map2.svg, which is an updated version of File:H1N1 Italy Map.svg. How can I overwrite the old file with my new one? Looks like you usurped the user name, "Sushiflinger"? To do that, crats move the existing Sushiflinger user - and all of its pages - to a new user called Sushiflinger (usurped) - and then move your original name to Sushiflinger. File Deletion

Maybe someone experienced from COM:BATCH can help you. Otherwise maybe using one of the tools for the basic upload (author, license, source, of course filename) and entering the description and categories after the upload will be a sollution, depends on the spectrum of the uploads. --Martin H. If you have many photos to upload and they all have similar {{Information}} template entries, categories, etc., one low-tech method to streamline the tedium slightly is to use the plainest upload form, and use an external text editor to edit the {{Information}} template texts. That way you can use the editor's efficient copy and paste functions to prepare the wikitext, and then for each photo you only have to select the image to upload and paste in the pre-edited wikitext. See User:Teratornis/Flickr examples, which may or may not be similar to what you want to do. I haven't figured out a really efficient method yet. The worst method is to use an upload form that makes you select all the information from individual fields - that is truly god-awful when you want to upload a dozen similar photos. By the time you finish selecting the same three or four categories for each photo, your frame of mind will be like Hitler's in the bunker. --Teratornis (talk) 05:18, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Personally, that method works extremely well for me: upload one file, then go back to the upload form with the browser's back button: it should re-fill the form. Then just select the next file, make minor adaptations (time, description), and upload again. Categories are also restored when going back. Lupo 09:23, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I remember trying that, but for some reason I didn't like the way it behaved. I recall some sort of spurious error message that put me off. I guess I should look at that again. But I generally tend to find fill-out forms annoying for repetitive work; I'm much more a text-editor/markup language fan. Using one of the many Mediawiki bot libraries, it would be straightforward to create a fully automatic uploader that takes images and image descriptions in associated text files and uploads them all. Thanks for all your suggestions people! The thing is: I've already done the text editor way, also the back button was my friend for quite some time. But it's still inefficient. You know, we Germans adore efficiency ;) Wasn't it ever proposed to add a proper upload tool to Wiki, like any random photo upload service offers one? I mean, it can't be such a big deal at all. The way to find out whether it is a big deal to build such a tool is to try building it. Even figuring out where to suggest it might be somewhat difficult. Wikimedia Commons consists of a fairly loose aggregation of volunteers, most of whom contribute their time in small increments. Only a handful of users will have worked their way into position to build a tool such as you may want, and perhaps they have already come up with other upload methods they like. (Typically a programmer can easily build a system that only he can use, but to make it usable by large numbers of distant strangers who all use different computers and have different preferences etc. may require many times more work. Thus the programmer must somehow become motivated to endure hardship merely to help someone else.) It might be more efficient to improve the tools we already have. For example, "it's a pain in the arse" is not a useful characterization of Commonist, because it doesn't explain exactly what you don't like about Commonist now, and what you would like instead. I suggest making a user subpage where you specify as clearly as possible what you want in an upload tool. Then someone with programming skills would have a definite target, whether for building a completely new tool, or improving an existing tool. Your odds of success improve if dozens or perhaps hundreds of other users read your specification and agree that they too must have such a tool. Note that many tools appear more difficult than they actually are when the documentation is poor. As with the programs themselves, we only have good documentation after some users write what they have figured out. Most people have no obvious incentive to do this, because once they figure out how to do something, they no longer need a document. --Teratornis (talk) 17:18, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

After image upload, the file page won't show my image. Only link to the image is shown. Here r the pages I'm talking about: File:Mahkamah Agung insignia.svg and File:Mahkamah Agung insignia.png.

Other than this small inconvenience, everything else works fine, I can link to the image or embed them in articles.

Who is the copyright holder of an unauthorised book

Hi. I wanted to offer this image at the German and English novel-articles. I am not quite sure about the copyright. The book is usually copyrighted by its publisher. The edition is, however, printed without a publisher claiming its copyright. The image of the edition will not infringe the rights of Rushdie nor en:Viking Press, I assume. New Version Problem

I've uploaded my image, File:Biography Barnstar.png, but it didn't work. When I tried to revert my edit, all the previous versions (except for the oldest version) became the new version, while the new one became the old! Can anyone help with this curious problem? Please! Can't edit template

File:Farmer walking in dust storm Cimarron County Oklahoma2.jpg is a featured picture at the English Wikipedia, and as such, carries a template noting its featured status there. However, the grammar is bad ("This is a featured picture on English Wikipedia..."); it should be changed to "...picture on the English...". To find the template, click the edit link on the file, and scroll down the page to see the template list at the bottom. The template you want appears to be {{Assessments/en}}. I think I see where the word "the" could go, but the template has a lot going on there, and who knows what might break. I suggest discussing it first on Template talk:Assessments. Maybe someone who is more familiar with the template can edit it with less chance of breakage. This image is found here on flickr [9] and also on another website [10]. How to correctly determine if its a copyright violation, or the external website (funmunch.com) just copied it from flickr without attribution? Hi SpaceFlight, you are correct here: The image is copied from the other website and directly forwarded to Commons, this is called Flickr washing (same date, same name - obvious).

In cases it is not so obvious you should compare the flickr uploads, not possible here because there is only one upload. You should check the EXIF of some random images for copyright notices, compare the camera types, if someone makes professional photos you should check if he has photos of his family or private images made with the same camera. You seem to refer to the {{License migration}} template which you removed.

When a bot puts a message template on a file, the template should document itself by linking to pages that explain what the template means, and how the user should deal with it. Read the links off the template, and if anything seems unclear in the instructions, write it on the instruction page's talk page so someone can clarify the instructions. We want these things to be self-contained and self-explanatory, and the only way to make them so is for the intended victims recipients to feed back whatever they did not understand, so the documenters can refine the documents to make them understandable to everyone, especially to new users. (It's hard for expert users to write for new users, because experts tend to forget what new users don't know yet. Thus experts need feedback from new users so they can remember what new users need to see.)

• Alternatively, maybe the bot made a mistake. If reading the documents does not make clear why the bot put the message template on the image page, look at the bot's user page to see how the bot author wants recipients to report errors or questions. The idea of bots is to save repetitive human labor, but this doesn't work if the bot creates more confusion - then the bot is just wasting people's time. So if the bot is confusing you, something in the system is broken: either you didn't read the documents, or the documents weren't clear, or the bot made a mistake. I Uploaded some files for my article PSV Oostfront ( NL Wikipedia ). But i made a mistake with the license. I selected the 'it's from someone else' license, and now it will be deleted in 7 days.. Actually it's all from myself ( You can see that on oostfront.webs.com press on 'photo galerry' and you see my foto's with copyright under.. ) But i changed the Author in Psvpride ( My name) So i wanna show the people its mine, but there is still the 'delete in 7 days' box.. and it's a shame if they get deleted, because i want to keep the pictures for my article PSV oostfront.

I had a look at all your uploads:

• Oostfront.jpg - The template says that you need a free licence or the file gets deleted. Images which are not published under a free licence are not allowed on Commons. You just have to remove the "no licence" tag and replace it with a free licence. If you give a webpage as source you may include the link where it is included, because it could be everywhere on that page.
• Logo oost-front.jpg - A logo which is ineligible for copyright. I removed the {{No licence}} and included {{PD-ineligible}} instead.
• L-sidelogo.jpg - A copyrighted logo which is not ineligible for copyright. Such logos are not allowed on Commons. Thereby I removed it.
• L-side.jpg - Honestly it looks like I scan of a newspaper or something the like to me and I challenge that (even you may have scanned the image) the image as such was taken by you and thereby that you are allowed to icence this image under a free licence.
• L-side2.jpg - Same as for L-side.jpg
• Oost.jpg - Same as for Oostfront.jpg
• L-sidepsv.jpg - Same as for L-side.jpg. Moreover the Nikon logo in the top right corner is an indication that this image is not your own work.
• L-sidepsv2.jpg - Same as for Oostfront.jpg
• PSVL-side.jpg - Same as for L-side.jpg
• My Club.jpg - Looks like a someelse has created this image and you have uploaded this image here.
• PSV Oostfront.jpg - This image has no bad tag. It is licenced under a free licence.

Please note the following:

1) Commons does not allows fair use.

2) You are only allowed to licence any work under a free licence if you have taken the image (derivative works of copyrighted material (such as an image of a Micky Mouse figure) are also not allowed) or if you have the permission to do so. Content which is displayed on any webside is not freely licenced because you can see it (many user confuse public domain with content that everybody can see; "they released it to the public").

3) If a scan of a part of a newspaper is dispalyed on some webpage this webpage is not allowed to give you the permission to upload this image under a free licence, because they do not own the copyright for the newspaper. The same goes for images which are made by photographers who only agreed that their image is displayed on a webpage. The webpage is again not allowed to give you the permission to licence the image under a free licence.

4) A free licence does include that the image can be used for commercial purpose. Many authors are not fine with that issue. If the author only agreed to display the image the webside is not allowed to give you the permission that you are allowed to use that file for commercial purpose.

I think that even some of your images are really taken by yourself others are not (e.g. the newspager-style images) and you don't have the permission to upload these images. Long contribution but I hope that it helps you.

Yes, but it not works correctly. Example: File:Zinnowitz Usedom Neue Strandstraße Bäderarchitektur.JPG, you have to check:

• The views of the Commons filepage [12]
• The views of the german and english Wikipedia filepages en de
• The views of the image inside the article is still not counted.

Make file preview smaller

For a image/media file's page, is there any coding to make the image appear smaller or larger? For example, underneath this image File:Vincent Willem van Gogh 002.jpg there is a "full resolution" link. How can I make this appear in an image such as this: File:Procent-teken.svg?

For Wikimedia projects use [[File:Vincent Willem van Gogh 002.jpg|thumb|200px|description]] to reduze the size to 200px on the shorter side. To download you can have thumbnail versions in every size: 450px, 200px. Compare the two weblinks: Just add 123px- to the filename in the URL, you can get every size from 1px to 1255px for this image this way. To generally reduze the size of images on image description pages go to your preferences, 2nd tab "appearance", 2nd box. You must get permission in terms of Commons:Email templates that everyone can use the images for every purpose including commercial use under the terms of a free license or agreement like {{Attribution}}. If your permission is for everyone inside and outside Wikimedia projects {{Attribution}} or {{Copyrighted free use}} is close to your permission. Maybe Commons has images of this castles, see Category:Castles in Landkreis Mansfeld-Südharz. Setting up a vote on Wikimedia

There is currently a discussion on Wikimedia Commons regarding the flag of the Republic of China. Since the government doesn't provide any specification for their flag, several editors have tried to approximate the colors based on different sources, but in the end everybody have different preferences so no consensus has been reached as of yet. So in order to reach this consensus, I'm thinking that we could organize of vote, as it as been done for the Polish flag. i.e. we would propose two or three different options and ask editors to choose their favorite one. So my questions are: do you think this kind of vote would be appropriate on Wikimedia? If so, do you know what is the procedure to follow to setup the vote? Sandbox for images?

Is there a sandbox that can be used for image experiments?

Reusing content outside Wikimedia

There it is said, that I can use files from Wikimedia Commons, link them without copying to my own wiki. But in the section below it is said "This page assumes you wish to copy individual items for your use. For media files, don't hotlink. Please copy them to your own server." I'm confused: can I link files at Wikimedia Commons (enabling it in LocalSettings.php) or not? My understanding is that if you own a MediaWiki powered website, you can configure it so that you can display images from Commons using the same syntax as locally uploaded images. If the COM:REUSE page implies such a distinction, why wouldn't the page mention the distinction explicitly? Is the reader supposed to guess? The problem with hotlinking is bandwidth theft, and this would probably be independent of the method people use to hotlink to images on Commons. I can't see how it makes any practical difference whether someone hotlinks from a Web site running on any particular software. SVG/PNG duplicate deletion policy

What should I do (if anything) with original images if I make an SVG version of them - Commons deletion policy says they shouldn't be deleted. Should I be changing links on pages to the SVG version and not raster version? And what should I do then, if I convert an image from a gif to a png. Does that count as duplication?

The old file should not be deleted, as that would break the attribution path (also, some reusers might prefer the original file format). You can use the templates {{Vector version available}} or {{Superseded}}. Pruneau^talk 10:52, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Uploaded Image but no thumbnail and can't link from Wikipaedia

I have uploaded a jpeg "MacquarieIslandCormorant.jpg" of a cormorant http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?wikifam=commons.wikimedia.org&img_user_text=Hullwarren and wish to embed it into the Wiki for "Macquarie Shag". In the commons I cannot see a thumbnail for the file and in Wikipaedia I cannot embed the file (All I get is a red text of the image name).

Are the two problems related or do I not have rights to do the embed into Wikipaedia?

The file at File:MacquarieIslandCormorant.JPG displays fine for me. When you are trying to embed it in Wikipedia, make sure that the name is exactly as it appears on the file page. Given how you wrote it in your message, maybe you got the capitalization of the extension wrong: you need to write .JPG, not .jpg. Pruneau^talk 11:34, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

How to delete a file

Moved to the bottom of the Help desk by User:Teratornis.

I accidently damaged an image file that I created a year ago by replacing it with an unrelated image. The "revert" button made a copy of the correct image, but did not make the correct image current. I tried replacing it by uploading the correct image, but that did not work. I fixed the problem by uploading the correct image with a different name and modified the article to refer to the new name. The list would be quite long, Maybe we have 1 million categories. Use similar images in Wikipedia Articles for orientation or browse the category tree. Taking your file File:Iododeoxyuridine.jpg I would first check the english wikipedia w:en:Idoxuridine, the file used there File:Idoxuridine.svg is categorized with Category:Antivirals and Category:Nucleosides - thats maybe a good orientation. --Martin H. Also you can try searching for keywords in your file descriptions. Sometimes that will find categories related to your images, along with images from other people which have categories you can examine. See the links under COM:EIC#Cat for more information. Since many if not most Commons users have specific topic interests, once you learn the categories for your interests, most of your future uploads will probably fit into those categories. How hard it is to have a file renamed

I've asked for a file to be renamed, via the {{rename}} template (see here). The request has been there for over a week now, and it hasn't been renamed yet. Apparently a trusted user needs to do something with it. I have just uploaded a file which I think may have the incorrect name (I might have got the species ID wrong). What can I do to get it renamed, that won't take over a week? I know that a common suggestion is to upload the file myself to the new name, and have the other file deleted. But not everyone has speedy upload times and it's a large file. Really this is an administrative task that should be able to be taken care of easily. Any better ideas? Error message when searching for categories

Hello - I tried to use the Common Sense tool to search for categories for two images I uploaded. (The images are named "FF-1093 papal blessing" and "Father Capodanno Memorial".) However, using this Tool only gives me the following error message:

Fatal error: Call to a member function addQuotes() on a non-object in /home/daniel/public_html/WikiSense-live/common/FilterCats.php on line 48

I have found a few categories I think would be appropriate, but will this message present more problems? These were my first image postings, so could I have done something incorrectly? Elsquared (talk) 06:18, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

You can categorize them yourself. All you have to do is hit the "edit" button at the top of the page for each file and then insert the code [[Category:Battle of Stalingrad]]. I did the first one for you as an example. --Yarnalgo (talk) 05:10, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Updating files transferred from en: to Commons

I'm updating a batch of files recently xfrd to Commons, and have run into a snag.

Here's an example Before: File:Cabrillo1947.jpg-- transfer bot appended "{{en|" to the description box. Note description is blank, but all the other boxes are filled out.

After: File:CalifNG,1924adj.jpg Editing this out brings back the description, but blanks the rest of the form.

Help?
