Request : Can anyone remove the watermark from this image, plus a few others here at Haridwar#History_of_Haridwar. Thanks! --Ekabhishek (talk) 11:06, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- You mean the red square in the corner that says "British Library"? Shouldn't be too hard, although I may not have time to do it today. There are a few images where it seems to partially obscure some text in the original image, though; I can't really fix those properly without knowing what's supposed to be under there. While I'm at it, I assume you'd also like the blue corners fixed in File:A ghat at Haridwar, 1860s.jpg and the line in the middle of File:Hill opposite Haridwar, July 1813.jpg? How about contrast adjustment for the line drawings? —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 12:06, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- I totally agree with your observations regarding the work needed, including the British Library red tags removal. Contrast adjustment would allow some of the line drawing, especially the first one titled "The main ghat down to the river, Hardwar, 7 April 1789" , to be used to the articles. Thanks! PS: Specific queries can also be addressed, obscure text etc. --Ekabhishek (talk) 16:55, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

- Yeah, but I've put them where the arrows pointed before. Why would that be better? --Beao 08:34, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Request: -- Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 08:42, 28 May 2009 (UTC) I want to nominate the image for Featured picture, but there is a line near the middle that ruins the picture. Could someone fix this? Graphist opinion:
- Comment This image has been discussed here before: see the section #Stitch these images together above. There are some other problems with it, such as a creepy disembodied head on the left and a child's floating torso on the right. Also, it could probably do with some downscaling, given how blurry it looks at full resolution. Given all that, I suspect a reblending from the original images (and the original .pto file, if available) would be called for. (But other than that, I do agree that it's a very nice panorama.) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 15:07, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Just noticed this here. I believe I still have the underlying images, if someone else wants to take a shot at stitching the panorama. I wasn't kidding when I said it was from 56 images, but I could upload them all if someone wants to make a separate attempt at it. It was really pushing the limits of the computer I was using at the time (and I crashed Hugin several times trying to make this). - Jmabel ! talk 06:34, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- I'm certainly willing to give it a try. If you don't want to upload all the files to Commons, you could always just zip them up and plonk them on a personal website somewhere. Or make a .torrent of them, or put them on a file sharing site, or something. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 23:01, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- I just very belatedly noticed your prompt response! I'll try to upload the images some time in the next week or so; I've got a bunch of other uploading I want to do first, though. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- Commonist is good for this kind of thing. Supplying the source images of a panorama is never a bad idea. --J.smith (talk) 06:27, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- I am uploading with Commonist at this very moment. All images will have names beginning with "Georgetown PowerPlant interior pano 1 component", followed by whatever 4-digit number my camera used in the original image. So they are File:Georgetown PowerPlant interior pano 1 component 7991.JPG etc.
- If I can be of any further assistance on this, please ping me on my user talk page. I don't assiduously follow the Graphics Lab School pages. - Jmabel ! talk 17:16, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

- You need some form of evidence that this image is in the public domain — as it is this JPEG isn't even safe on Commons. At the least we'd need the publication date of the yearbook. Perhaps contacting the source website organization via email. ¦ Reisio (talk) 06:09, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
It should be PD, the site hasn't been updated for atleast 4 years, and with it in such a bad state, one can only assume that it is old, adn therefore in the public domain, like most US city flags. (Connormah forgetting to log in) 99.199.188.218 17:46, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

That image came from FotW, which cites a website run by Wilkes Barre, which claims the image came from a "Pennsylvania Society Year Book". The "Society" appears to be the Penna state chapter of the Sons of the Revolution. The latest "Year Book" I could find of theirs was from 1913, so the image is at least that old, which makes it {{PD-US}} by 10 years. 76.117.247.55 23:37, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

- Anyway, I did a quick stitch with hugin: File:Perón montado a caballo stitched.jpg. I didn't do any other editing on it; if you want to work on it, I assume you can adjust the contrast, edit out the creases and the text showing through, scale down to eliminate raster and so on yourself. - I'm not sure about the first, but I think the second set at least is basically unstitchable: the surface isn't flat and the images haven't been taken from the same position nor from the same angle. Sorry. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 13:17, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for your input. I will make new pictures whenever possible. Actually I tried to take them from a vertical point under each part of the ceiling, so to have less distortion. Isn't the right way to do it? Yann (talk) 20:13, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- The right way to take pictures, if you want to be able to stitch them into a panorama using software like hugin, is to take them from as close to the exact same spot as possible. Ideally, you want to rotate your camera around the entrance pupil of the lens, which is generally somewhere inside the lens along its axis, but a little movement can usually be fudged. Significant camera movement, however, introduces parallax errors that can be hard or impossible to correct. You also generally want to be as far away from whatever you're photographing as possible, since the closer things are to the camera, the more pronounced any parallax effects will be. (You can eliminate parallex issues almost completely by using a tripod with a special panorama head that rotates the camera exactly around the entrance pupil, but those can be somewhat expensive and must be carefully adjusted for each camera and lens.) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 22:54, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- Shooting in parallel in only valid for wall or planar surface. For 3D objects including church interiors, it will fail. Esby (talk) 09:51, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

- As promised, here's a partially restored version. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 17:50, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- I've just about got the face fixed now, although it's hardly perfect. I've also uploaded a JPEG version, since it looks better thumbnailed. I may be able to remove a few more conspicuous spots and scratches, and maybe do something about the gray spot on the neck, but it's getting close to as good as I can make it. Also, there's something about the left eye and cheek that looks odd; I suspect there are some dark smudges mixed with the natural shadows there, and I'm finding it difficult to tease them apart. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 01:31, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Spectre fixes
[edit]-
1. Electromagnetic spectrum illustration to be fixed by inserting an infrared band
-
2. diagram showing where the infrared band should appear and the correct wavelengths to use
-
3. added microwaves, long waves and gamma radiation, also fixed the wavelengths
-
4. 84user's adaptation with icons swapped and bolder figures
-
5. 84user's attempt at a narrow version, looks Ok in Inkscape and Opera but Commons somehow
shrinksshrank the width; latest upload has fixed this -
6. Visible light variant made from Spectre.svg and Spectre InfraRed.svg
Article(s): almost everywhere; and see w:en:Electromagnetic spectrum for background needed to understand problem
Request: Please squeeze in an infra-red band icon between the rainbow icon and the microwave icon. Please also correct the wavelengths as shown in File:Spectre Terahertz.svg, or refer to w:en:Electromagnetic spectrum. I can do a stop-gap fix myself by copy and paste from the second image but I doubt the result will be the high quality a featured picture deserves (I had problems with the font, and my quickfix icons do not look good in closeup). -- 84user (talk) 17:22, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: hi, i hope it works. it's my first upload to wikicommons, so please don't hesitate to ask for any changes.Isometrik (talk) 02:31, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
- Wow, that's quite good and more than I expected. I made some trial variants from it and placed them in the gallery above. The first of my adaptations (4) swaps two icons because it seems the red quarter circle with the "C" represents infrared, while the "bar"-like icon is meant to represent microwaves. The second adaptation (5) removed the left-most gamma and right-most radio icon because they duplicate the existing icons. The radiation symbol is meant to represent gamma. The micorwave icon unfortunately is easily confused with an electric bar fire. However, after I uploaded the narrow SVG (width 758 height 443), Commons
displaysdisplayed it as 512 wide by 443 high. Is this a known bug in Inkscape or in Commons? Latest upload has fixed it. It looks Ok when I view the SVG locally in Opera. Can you make a version of mine that matches the original size of 744 × 524?84user (talk) 20:28, 5 August 2009 (UTC) - Update: I've added a variant (6) made by merging elements from Spectre.svg and Spectre InfraRed.svg, and struck through out of date comments. 84user (talk) 21:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hello again, when i was doing my corrections, i read the article, so i used c° and the graph of the rising temperature (red quarter circle) to represent microwaves as they can heat things up. and from this graph: File:Electromagnetic-Spectrum.png i added gamma radiation and long waves, which are not the same as x-ray and radio waves. Trying to Stitch / Distortion Correction
[edit]-
Shrine of the Bab (highres)
Request: I am trying to learn how to stitch, however, I am having difficulty beyond a basic, semi-automatic stitch, especially with distortion. While travelling, I decided to try and get as high a resolution picture of the above as possible, despite my camera. So I took 9 greatly overlapping pictures with the idea that I would learn to stitch them when I returned. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the perspective distortion and tilt to look right. I'm really trying to get it as exact as possible, but just not able to. The above is my best effort using hugin and my minimal skills. I was wondering if anyone is able to stitch them with a straight tilt and an aesthetic perspective correction? Are there any programs that help to get perfectly straight lines?-- JalalV (talk) 00:40, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Panorama help requested: Music Concourse
[edit]Article(s): None
Request: I recently took this set of six pictures from the roof of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. I would expect they should make a good panorama of the Music Concourse and the De Young Museum. For some reason, when I tried putting that panorama together with Hugin, I got a big black blank, an experience repeated even after very carefully hand-setting the control points. No idea why it isn't working for me, so I've uploaded the six raw images and am hoping someone else can succeed with this. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Request for help in special restoration project
[edit]Hello,
Recently, Wikimedia Sverige was able to get a donation from an archive with some very early photographies, see Regionarkivet. Together with Regionarkivet, we are talking about producing a book with the photographs for the Gothenburg Book Fair, which is in a month or so. The first versions I uploaded were watermarked since Regionarkivet thought that they didn't have any versions without watermarks, but we stumbled upon versions without, and I will upload them as soon as I get them. Anyway, the photographs need a bit of restoration and I was wondering if you could lend a hand as I am not very good at restoring pictures. Should you help, it will of course be noted in the book (which hopefully would be sold internationally). If you can help, please drop me an email to: lennart@wikimedia.se. Thanks in advance and sorry for cross-posting. Best wishes, Hannibal (talk) 09:04, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- It'd be simpler (and better for Commons?) if you uploaded the non-watermarked versions and linked to them. Then we could go through our usual process of having a listing here and dealing with them. ¦ Reisio (talk) 04:09, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, the thing is, I won't have the pictures without watermarks until next week, so I was just trying to ascertain the interest of the Commons restorationists. But I will upload and link to them here as soon as I can. Any help is greatly appreciated.//Hannibal (talk) 09:26, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion: I don't understand: you mentioned above that you will get a version without the watermark? Yann (talk) 10:24, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps I didn't explain myself as clearly as I thought. These pictures have tears, spots and discolorations. I was hoping that you guys could fix at least a couple of the photographs before we have to send them to the printer, in about two weeks. I hope that explains the situation a bit more. Thanks, Hannibal (talk) 10:52, 27 August 2009 (UTC) (BTW, if you wonder why I haven't uploaded all 27, it's because some are too big for Commons.)
- I have done some corrections: contrast, color balance, grayscale, replacing existing images when the image without watermark is available. See Category:Images from Regionarkivet. Yann (talk) 17:05, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
