- The photo comes from an anonymous newspaper clipping I have from my personal collection on naturopathy. I did not take it from Amazon but the same photo appears there in a book. The date is likely to be 1970 or 1971. Probably best to delete it because I can't substantiate the source. 90% of the stuff I upload is before 1923. This was about the only recent one I uploaded. Sofie van den Enk.tif: according to https://pers.kro-ncrv.nl/beeldbank?presentors=55 this photo was taken by William Rutten. But here it's André van den Heuvel. It can only be one of those.
DSC8716 Sofie van den Enk low res.jpg: claimed as own work, but appears to be from a shoot by Stijn Ghijsen based on the setting. In Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sofie van den Enk.tif the uploader claims to be married to Sofie, so he should be André van den Heuvel.

A duplicate derived from File:Apostasy laws in 2013.SVG. There is no real reason why this file should be present. Being a map, it is better that the original SVG file be used, because it can be edited. This one has to be replaced whenever the original is changed. Please change the file links on the Wikipedia articles this image is used, in case this is deleted. MonsterHunter32 (talk) 17:20, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

The image was uploaded from (and is still offered on) the Flickr-site of the US Embassy in London, UK. However, on Flickr it is under a Commons-non-compliant CC-BY-ND license. Being offered by an U.S. Embassy it might fall under PD-USGov, provided it had been created by an embassy employee or at least "official photographer". Exactly the latter is not clear, as - contrary to some other images on the same Flickr-site - there is no note "(C) US Embassy" or "(C) US Embassy photographer". So, there is some likelyhood they got the image just from a photographer present at the event of the embassy. Therefore, it seems we need to delete this image per COM:PRP. -- Túrelio (talk) 09:16, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

- The artwork in File:CROWD CONTROL (3039526184).jpg is secondary to the principal subjects (police, sitting woman, and five chairs). The photo depicted in File:Flickr convention (269725404).jpg is from the 1920s and PD-Canada. And File:FAMILY FEUD IGNITES BLOODBATH. (3612909068).jpg depicts only a small portion of the artwork. I believe that they should be deleted because of copyright violation. The details are described below.
Images #1 to #5 are the brand logos of Kansai Airports Co., Ltd. They are the current operator of Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and Kobe Airport. Their copyright policy is declared in [4]. Please, note that their policy is not based on the license-free standard. Every time we would make copy of these logos, we should beg their permission (except for personal use or quotation purposes to make one). The original logo files are from [5], in which the meaning and design concepts of the images are written in detail. That is, they are not mere “simple geometric shapes or text”.
Images #6 to #9 are the brand logos of New Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd. They are the former operator of Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport. Their copyright policy is declared in [6]. I am sorry that there is no English page. However, their policy is completely same with that of Kansai Airports Co., Ltd. ([7] in Japanese) It means that the copyright policy for the images #6 to #9 is also same as [8] (in English). That is, their policy is also based on the no license-free standard. The original logo files are from [9], in which the design concepts of the images are also described in detail (concerning of mottos written above the 3-letter logos and meaning of font and colors used there). They are not mere “simple geometric shapes or text”, too.
Adding to say, the images #8 and #9 are duplicates.
Above are why I believe they should be deleted. --エア修士 (talk) 12:27, 23 June 2019 (UTC) corrections.--エア修士 (talk) 12:59, 23 June 2019 (UTC) additional correction. --エア修士 (talk) 15:12, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- I think these logos aren't copyrighted because it's applied arts and text logos. At least in Japan, most lawyers think applied arts aren't copyrighted. --Banku (talk) 03:31, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- (Reply) Thank you for your polite replying on your talk page and participating in the deletion discussion. I leave some comments on your copyright policy as following. --エア修士 (talk) 15:12, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- (Comments) First of all, Mr./Ms. Banku and I are in agreement that Kansai Airports Co., Ltd. and New Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd. clearly claim their copyright of the images listed above in their web sites (Please, note that Mr./Ms. Banku comments concerning for this issue in his/her talk page on the basis of next condition, “I (Mr./Ms. Banku) avoid to comment on the individual case in this deletion requests. But, I show my policy on the materials (with copyright claimed by the owner in their web sites) as following...”, which are written in Japanese).
Second, in the web sites I showed as the original sources of the image files, the design concepts are described in detail with intension for the creations. Some of them are shown as followings. (I) As for the images #1 to #5, the blue and red cross-linked ellipses symbol is expression of comfortable stay in the airports and enjoyment in the journey, which are the corporate motto. Additionally, the two ellipses indicate the real directions of runways in the airports that Kansai Airports Co., Ltd. operates. That is, this symbol is designed for showing their company policy by using characteristics of their own airports. (II) Concerning of the images #7 to #9, the sentences placed above the 3-letter logos are catchphrases and advertising slogans that depict each benefits of their own airports. (III) The symbol in the image #6 shows the integration of the two airports, which are expressed as green and blue shapes. These colors respectively correspond to those in the images #7 to #9. (Note that the corporate goal of New Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd. is management’s unification of Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport).
I think these facts support that the uploaded image files are not mere simple geometric shapes/text nor under threshold of originality.
By the way, Mr./Ms. Banku said to us, ”Most lawyers (in Japan) think applied arts aren't copyrighted”. I do not think so because of following reasons. (1) These logos are not “applied arts”. (2) Production in which thought is expressed in a creative way including literary and art can be protected by Japanese copyright law (See Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Japan). --エア修士 (talk) 15:12, 24 June 2019 (UTC) corrections.--エア修士 (talk) 05:09, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

- The first link is just noise. There's only one hit in the copyright database that could matter, the one 28 years after publication that's a renewal notice (an ID of R...). COM:PCP does not say that we shouldn't upload public domain works because someone once made noise about maybe owning copyright in them.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:22, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Copyright assignment V3492 D216-298 P1-891 is referenced in an opinion from the Stanford University to the Copyright Office as a positive hit in a copyright search [21] and here, as an evidence of copyright ownership. This film is also part of V1933P347 by which a group of copyrights were assigned by United Artists to Bank of America as collaterals to a loan [22] and COM:PCP would imply IMO to assume BOA lawyers considered such assets as more than 'just noise'. — Racconish 💬 08:16, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Who is www.copyrightencyclopedia.com, and why should I care about their mechanical dumps? You're pointing to a completely random website and acting like they're authoritative.
- If the w:Financial crisis of 2007–2008 taught us anything, it's that banks don't always carefully and correctly value their assets. And what value is it to BoA to rubbish the value of their customer's property? The question BoA would have asked itself is if there is enough value in that collection as a whole to back the loan, not whether there existed some part of that collection that, provided there existed some group who was brave enough to argue the point, the copyright could be established as not valid. You're justifying their decision; clearly even if they couldn't win in court, United Artists and BoA are intimidating enough that you're unwilling to accept that they may have lost the copyright.--Prosfilaes (talk) 10:36, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

- Keep This document linked to has no legal effect. It is one company declaring that it has bought the rights to these works, and any public domain works that got swept up in the collection, this document asserts the buying company gets to argue the legal case, if more than intimidation is necessary. It's cheaper and easier to buy the whole set then nitpick such details and leave any possible rights (including foreign ones, like in France and Germany) with the seller.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:18, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Patrick Rogel (talk) 14:45, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
@Patrick Rogel: Why do we need a permission? The images come from the City Council of Madrid, the source provides a valid CC license and the works has been obviously made for the City Council of Madrid (all of them carry the City Council of Madrid web site and logo). Thus, I can't see the problem. Although I appreciate the precautionary principle, whether the City Council of Madrid owns the copyright of the works it orders is exactly as with any other city council, government or supra-national organization. Do they have the rights of the photographs? --Discasto talk 20:06, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- That the work is commissionned or sponsored by the City Council of Madrid does not mean they have the rights to the drawings which belong to the illustrators. Indeed it's very rare that authors transfer their rights. --Patrick Rogel (talk) 20:11, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- From experience, I wouldn't find particularly odd they may have rightly released these files under a compatible license. For example, the City Council explicitly released some of the most outstanding posters (I particularly remember this awesome series about happy women to celebrate San Isidro) under a CC-BY-NC and publicised it in the same media outlet mentioning the will of the artist (Mercedes deBellard) to release it that way (in this case, sadly a non-compatible cc-by-nc). Ok, this does not prove anything but that they have some authorship control over the commissions (so not that rare).--Asqueladd (talk) 20:05, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
Deleted: per nomination. Public bodies often think they own the rights but quite rarely they do. In this case we need permission from the original authors. --Green Giant (talk) 01:05, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
Still in copyright [64] — Racconish 💬 15:06, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- Racconish, please interpret that list for us. That's a current document, and all the titles on the list are currently copyrighted? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:47, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- Comment Likely yes. This document is part of a set of copyright transfer notices postdating 1978 accessible on the web site of the US Copyright Office [65]. In 1982, the copyright of the film was transferred by United Artists to Bank of America as collateral for a loan ; in 1983, the collateral was released by Bank of America back to United Artists ; in 1986, the copyright was transferred to MGM ; in 1999, to Warner Home Video ; in 2003 to Warner Brothers Entertainment. The last transfer, referenced in the nomination, is mentioned in a 2014 Response from the Law and Policy Lab of Stanford law School to the Copyright Office’s as an example of evidence on copyright [66] and by a secondary source as an example of existence of copyright [67]. Furthermore, I doubt Bank of America lawyers would have accepted as collateral a non existing asset. IMO we should at least apply COM:PCP here. — Racconish 💬 11:56, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- That sounds right to me. If it is under copyright, I would think a lawsuit would be fairly likely, if a cease and desist letter were ignored. Delete. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:28, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- The "secondary source", www.copyrightencyclopedia.com, doesn't seem to be citing it as anything; it seems to be a dump of records with some indexes. I don't see anything in that Stanford Law School document that mentions it as an example of evidence on copyright; it is mentioned as an example of a copyright document.
- The Bank of America accepted as collateral 30,000 titles. What's the motivation for digging into the fine details of every single title on that list? A lack of US copyright would not mean that it has no copyright elsewhere in the world.
- COM:PCP demands significant doubt, which in my mind is more than a half-assed claim of copyright for a work that's clearly out of copyright.--Prosfilaes (talk) 08:22, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Potential invalid self-made copyright claim. Certainly looks to be an official map, variations are in use elsewhere attributed to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and also seeing crops of it a long time before the creation date listed in the tag. Worth discussing. AtomCrusher (talk) 17:21, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- Comment, if this does indeed originate from the MOTC, then it should be available under CC-SA 3.0 according to the MOTC's website (see tag bottom of their homepage), no? As long as the author is correctly attributed of course. Elspamo4 (talk) 15:50, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
Deleted: invalid copyright claim. The watermark at left foot of the image suggests it came from qr.com.qa. The onus is on the uploader to prove it is their own work or that it is under a free license as suggested in the discussion. --Green Giant (talk) 13:38, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
Collage appears to be a mix of copyrighted and public domain images. From the website, it looks like the author doesn't claim to own all of the original copyrights. — Rhododendrites talk | 18:48, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

- @Stephenmeadart: Thanks. The issue is that this sort of permission isn't enough to host images on Wikimedia Commons. Basically, anyone needs to be able to use or modify any image hosted here for any purpose forever (more or less). That means releasing all of the original images in the collage as well as the collage itself with a free license. That can only be done through formal documentation submitted by the copyright holders of each, sending documentation to COM:OTRS. In other words, there's a good amount of paperwork involved to upload images where there are copyrights the uploader doesn't own involved. It's a hassle, but it's how we ensure people who reuse images hosted here know they're doing so safely. — Rhododendrites talk | 04:46, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- Weak delete Unused, potential necessary involvement of original author via OTRS. AtomCrusher (talk) 20:56, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
Dear Rhododendrites: Are you saying the artwork is weak and thus deserves deletion? If so is is it weak in your opinion due to composition or the fact that it is a digitally based medium? OR do you just think any argument I (or others) might make for not deleting it would be weak?
When I happened to see the "Upload for Pride" announcement I did not really see much in the way of guidelines of what content would be deemed a "no no" and why. (Perhaps the terms were there and I missed them. If so, I apologize.) It said to submit your art, your writing etc. in the spirit of Pride and that was/is the whole point of the image I chose, a piece depicting the loving pride and support of a political activist mother superimposed with a big boot stamping on a rainbow flag as an obvious symbol for the reality of oppression. The instructions from WIKI were to write one sentence basically as a title, and then a short paragraph for "judges" to put the image in what might be helpful context. That was it.
Again, if there was a caveat against the medium of the entry that should have come from one of the judges right at the receiving end from the get go and with a clear, concise thoughtfully worded explanation as to why. All I received from WIKI was a message that image was earmarked for deletion with no explanation as to why.
Rhododendrites, are you one of the judges? Is there some place on Wiki in conjunction with this contest which gives actual names for the judges, (not anonymous usernames), with perhaps details about their (fairly subjective) artistic/cultural expertise to qualify them as judges? Furthermore, couldn't this whole debate of to delete or not to delete occur on some less public platform but as clear one-on-one communication in private emails between the artist and said judges?
Art & Appropriation: There are over 500 images for the series this Ms. Goldin piece is a part of. The overall scope is to also to be educational for LGBTI history is not taught in school curriculums on the whole, thus a person (student) might like the way an image is presented and want to learn more about who/what is represented.
Thank you for writing the following valid point: "there's a good amount of paperwork involved to upload images where there are copyrights the uploader doesn't own involved. It's a hassle, but it's how we ensure people who reuse images hosted here know they're doing so safely."
When it came to me trying to contact people in conjunction with the origins of these images very rarely was there even a name given as creator/copyright holder and so I made every effort of trying to contact those who might know of who the creator was (such a the daughters of Ms. Goldin), including estates where both subjects and most likely unknown photographers were deceased. Yes, it has been a very time-consuming, frustrating hassle which for the most part wound up in further dead ends: people not responding or people having no idea who owns copyright and who I should contact.
The point is I felt and feel so strongly about this series and what it is attempting to do (educate in addition to paying homage) that I maintain how images are used creates an entirely new piece of artwork(s). I take pride in that and encourage other collage/montage artists to go on confidently making art, including LGBTI art for Pride with confidence, courage and heart despite subjective draconian arguments regarding copyright infringement. Google the many court cases involving this argument and hear the validity of the voices of the artists vs. the reasons others try to judge and suppress the integrity of that art.
Please note: all the above paragraphs have been written due to the following statement I received from WIKI which is basically an invitation for dialogue.
Again, I would prefer if this did not take place in such a public forum and I believe WIKI should be upfront about how this may become the case for any well-meaning person who attempts to contribute non-harmful non-libelous information to the site.
"If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stephenmeadart (talk • contribs) 16:00, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Stephenmeadart: Are you saying the artwork is weak - ? I'm not certain how my comments could be understood that way, but I apologize if I wasn't clear. I suspect you're referring to AtomCrusher's comment starting with "weak delete"? That only means he/she is "weakly" of the position that the file should be deleted. It, too, is not a judgment of the work but jargon regarding this process (which I appreciate is difficult to jump into for the first time). Nothing about this is a judgment of the artwork/artistic merit, and I can understand your frustration if it seemed that way. This is strictly a copyright matter. Wikimedia Commons only hosts media which owners have legally released (as in with explicit documentation of licenses rather than simply granting permission) with a free license (like Creative Commons). When you make a collage, there is a copyright for the creative work of the collage, but all of the original copyrights are still intact. One work can have many copyrights, and all of them need to be free to be hosted here. Collages as a medium are perfectly welcome on Commons, but they pose these challenges regarding copyright. As far as who is judge, this discussion is kept open so that arguments can be made about, for example, the copyright status(es) of the work(s), and then is closed and acted upon by an administrator (I am not an administrator FWIW). If you mean a judge for the Wiki Loves Pride initiative in particular, then I am not one of those judges either. — Rhododendrites talk | 17:38, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
Dear Rhododendrites: Thank you for taking the time and for your courtesy is providing clarity regarding your response and the response of others. "Weak" sounds like the vernacular from the kids of "South Park". So should I delete my entry if that's what the judges/administators are ultimately going to do? Are judges/administrators viewing this thread and will they weigh in or where how I could contact them? Or should I just see how it plays out? I believe at this point it is too late to submit anything else. Appreciating your patience, Stephen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stephenmeadart (talk • contribs) 18:38, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, yes. "Weak, dude". :) I see. No, I'm quite certain that's not what AtomCrusher meant. "Weak Delete" is a shade less convicted than "Delete" and two steps removed from "Strong Delete". As for what to do from here, if you can secure written license releases from all copyright owners, they can be sent to COM:OTRS (click for more information). If you do so, leave a message here saying so. Otherwise, it will wind up deleted in a matter of a few days or possible a few weeks, depending on deletion backlogs (we need more volunteers!). This is the only page you need comment on -- other people can/will see this, and this is the thread the administrator who closes the discussion will read before making his/her determination. I know it can be a cumbersome process, and I think you for working to contribute to the project. — Rhododendrites talk | 20:04, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
