even per PD-Finland50 this shot can't be free, as it is said to be from 1966 and 1966 +50 = 2016. But we still have 2013. Túrelio (talk) 08:56, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This file was initially tagged by Hurricanefan24 as Speedy (speedydelete) and the most recent rationale was: Partial duplicate of File:Matthew 2004 rainfall.gif. Note to deleting admin: please redirect file to aforementioned one after deletion to fix any interwiki problems and prevent problems encountered by CommonsDelinker. HF (talk) 01:56, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation: Huntster removed the above speedy deletion tag, saying that "the two files are very different from one another, so speedy deletion does not apply." I've responded on their talk page here with a response. HF (talk) 01:57, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And I've replied here, asking that he remove all the speedy templates he's applied to the various rain maps, which are not duplicates and may be of value to other uses (both internal and external) who prefer the contour format to the shaded format. Speedy deletion for any of these files is inappropriate, and as they have educational value and potential for reuse. Obviously, my opinion is to keep all tagged images. `Huntster (t @ c) 02:41, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

COM:DW of painting. Location is unspecified, so it's not clear if it's covered by FOP, but most FOPs don't work on 2d paintings anyway. 99of9 (talk) 00:50, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Delete per precautionary principle. Commons:FOP#Indonesia applies, so there is no FOP rationale, plus this does not appear to be illegal graffiti (I'm not sure, for all I know SAEF might be the local football team and the paintwork is amateurish). Location is actually given by the tags ("Port Vila" being in Indonesia). Thanks for highlighting this one, an oversight on my part. -- (talk) 00:56, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

COM:DW No suggestion at the source that the photographer also painted the painting. 99of9 (talk) 01:00, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Delete I think the related blog post indicates that the photographer is not the painter. Any creative elements in generating the book cover design from the original photo are not the work of the photographer. There has been some recropping, recolouring, design layout, so I think it's best to ditch this per COM:PRP. We already have the original photo anyway. 99of9 (talk) 01:07, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep Hi, I am little bit confused by this request because the main topic of this image is the cliff with rock layering. The resolution of "the statue" is so low and unusable that it seems nonsense to delete this image. However, if the conclusion will be delete, the statue can be easily "remove by post-processing of the image" because it is no real the main task of this image. Therefore, I am against deleting. --Chmee2 (talk) 10:15, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A portrait of a no-name person that's taken in such a way that it's useless except as a portrait, and his no-name status (exemplified by his deletion log at en:wp) means that nobody's going to use this image; it's out of scope. Nyttend (talk) 13:57, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On top of that, see File:Josh costell1.JPG, which isn't the same person. If you want to use an image of Josh Costell, how are you going to know which one is him? Even more out of scope because we can't be sure which person goes with this name. Nyttend (talk) 14:04, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ditto the reasons given at the other nomination for a portrait of this guy. On top of what I said there, this person looks completely different from the one in that image, and I find it hard to believe that the uploader would know two different actors from the same city, born in the same year, with the same name, and photograph them on the same day. Since we can't tell which one the real guy is, how would a potential reuser know? This is even more out of scope because we can't certainly identify him. Does this violate COM:ADVERT? The equipment is all from one company, SCH Technologies and the uploader of the files and the creator of this gallery is an employee there. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 17:23, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was uploading images to allow them to be put into Wikipedia. The page at wikipedia requests images. I was requested to do it this way by wikipedia. It appears that I am going around in circles here trying to get images published. Also, there aren't many non commercial images of equipment so what am I supposed to do? Its hard enough getting my own images accepted let alone someone else's

Conformal coating is a small world and its not exactly a hobby topic. I am a leading expert and I am trying to provide informative images and editorial as they feel fit. Surely, others are free to also publish their own images. I have never deleted or even modified someone elses input so what is the issue? The images are also non commercial and not even labelled.

I should also point out this was only done today so no one has had a chance to add to this yet.

Please help me get this right and work the issues out with wiki.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Leehitchens‎ (talk • contribs) 18:06, 27 March 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

The only issue I have raised is whether this gallery is in scope for Commons. I'm uncomfortable with a gallery that is essentially an advertising piece for your company, particularly since Commons does not have a well developed system of policing galleries. I have no problem with the images themselves. As you say, they may well be useful in an article in WP or outside of the WMF projects. I encourage you to use the images in an appropriate article on WP:EN or any of the other WPs.
It's entirely possible that over the week that this will be open for discussion that the community will decide that the gallery is OK. The boundary here is not well defined, which is why I began the DR with asking if there was a problem rather than asserting that there was one. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 23:28, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim

I can take them out of the gallery. Its no big deal. Wikimedia prompted me to put them into the gallery so I did. the real reason i am putting them in commons is to get the images into wikipedia. Again, this is a nightmare with copyright and I have just spent two days going through that. Finally, got it working and then this happens.

I was expanding the gallery next to add in defect photos of coating processes etc. But, if this is a problem then I wont bother. As I say this is a narrow field of people who will participate in entering information.

So, please just dont delete the images themselves or I will give up on wikipedia.

The irony is I put changes in wikipedia 5 days ago that was ranked by google instantly and found straight away. But because it was ripped down by others when you go the link the info is not there. This makes wiki look bad as hell and useless.

This redirect sounds fine. How do I do it? Sorry, still learning and as you can see I am trying to put this right.

It depends on whether or not the logo is complex enough to meet COM:TOO in whatever country the company or entity is based. If a logo is simple enough it can be hosted here under {{PD-Textlogo}}. After today identifying +40 uploads as copyvio (grabbed from different Panoramio-/Flickr-accounts, photo-hoster, blogs, official sites etc.) it´s difficult to believe that the remaining files are really - as declared - own work: Impressive talk page (now 57 problem tags, mostly regarding copyvios) and inconsistent upload behaviour (res changing from low to high to low to thumb, mostly without exif). Without counting the identified copyvios still an arsenal of different digicams in use: Motorola Xoom, SAMSUNG SL620, Sony DSC-W215, M1 V1702 and Fujifilm FinePix Z3. File:Douala Airport Fence.jpg + File:Douala Airport Fence 2.jpg with mysterious watermarks. File:Mbankomo7.jpg (uploaded in 03.2013) already circulating as thumbnail since 02.2013 via http://camfoot.com/actualites/e1-deux-equipes-du-tkc-contre-coton-sport-a-garoua,16221.html (Copyright ©2010 Camfoot. Tous Droits Reservés) = http://img2.camfoot.com/local/cache-vignettes/L150xH113/arton16221-392ab.jpg. Summarizing: Unlikely to be own work, IMHO untrusted user uploading a row of copyrighted material so these ones (per COM:PRP) can't be believed either.

One of the conditions of FoP China is that the author and the name of the original work must be attributed. This is not despite some research (see User_talk:Fæ#FoP-China). 99of9 (talk) 09:41, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I remain unconvinced that there is any time limit on placing the attribution. FoP has a definition in China, and these example photos are of objects that eventually will be identified. Deleting the image virtually guarantees this will never happen. Perhaps a better answer is to have a clearer disclaimer on the licence so that any re-user understands their obligation to make effort to credit the artist?
I'm not desperate to keep these photos, so will not be devastated if they go, I would just like to see a pragmatic approach to interpreting the more unusual FoP requirement for China. Thanks -- (talk) 09:51, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There's no "allowable time" to host a copyvio - it's like all other copyright, if you aren't compliant, you're violating the copyright laws. There is already a digitally photographed copy of the statue, and now copies of that on two media hosts. We are already reusing the statue! Commons tends to give some (usually 7 days) grace to fix up errors, but that has been well exceeded for these images. The Chinese law doesn't say "you should ask around and hope that eventually one of your friends comes up with the correct attribution". --99of9 (talk) 11:14, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We should also recognize that copyright law is subject to interpretation and pragmatism in implementation. Nobody has yet to point to any real-life legal cases based on a failure of attribution under the FoP act for China. FoP does apply to this photograph, so it is only this detail that remains. Should the creator ever come forward then the remedy would be to add the attribution, as the photograph itself is correctly covered by FoP, there can be no particular damage from it being public so long as this is not denied. It would be great if someone interested in this part of IP law in China could provide some relevant case law to illuminate the Commons guidelines. Thanks -- (talk) 11:40, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Let me slightly remix the bolded words on the FoP-China template for you to see if "FoP does apply to this photograph".... "Fae is allowed to reproduce this work if the author and the name of the original statue is attributed." Are you allowed to reproduce it? No. You don't need legal cases for a law to exist. --99of9 (talk) 11:58, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great thanks, we might want to create a category of Category:Fae's laws. ;-) -- (talk) 12:19, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scaled-down duplicate of File:Chantal HELENBECK.jpg. Froztbyte (talk) 23:48, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question If this image is deleted will this linke [fail]? It may be that the user made the thumbnail perhaps not knowing how to do that correctly from the bigger image? Ellin Beltz (talk) 03:31, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I moved this from English Wikipedia, but just realised that this might be wrong due to COM:FOP#Indonesia. Do you see enough of w:Achmad Yani International Airport for this to be a copyvio? Stefan4 (talk) 14:06, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate of File:Jay.png. Froztbyte (talk) 23:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Of the two I'd keep "Jay C. Hoffman.jpg" as I think the user's intent may have been to fix the name of the original image to "Jay C. Hoffman" instead of "Jay" but not known how to do that. Just my 2cents. But yes, one or the other has to go. Ellin Beltz (talk) 03:33, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Out of Commons:Project scope: Unused trivial logo of company with questionable notability. EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:03, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak  Keep - at the time of the original nomination, the image was in an article; was the article deleted for lack of notability? The company purports to have relationship with notable firms (e.g., Office Depot and Carrefour) and a quick Google search suggests some (albeit minimal) third-party coverage. I don't see the harm in keeping a PD logo around given that there are some hints of notability. However, if the aforementioned article can be found and was indeed deleted for notability issues, I'd be willing to reconsider. Эlcobbola talk 15:32, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This file was initially tagged by Elisardojm as Copyvio (copyvio) and the most recent rationale was: http://www.flickr.com/photos/celtabaloncesto/2870158706/in/set-72157607369928376
Converted by me to DR, as the image on Flickr (higher resolution) was uploaded several months later than this version (lower quality/resolution) to Commons. Therefore, they may have a common source. -- Túrelio (talk) 14:29, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see how this could be "educationally useful". It was just used by a vandal on en.wiki which I think is the only possible use for it. Smartse (talk) 22:16, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep That an image has been misued by a vandal is not a reason for deletion, nor is that an image contains sexually explicit material. Categories on image suggest in scope usefullness. That said, no evident reason for deletion. -- Infrogmation (talk) 14:18, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Question This isn't someone's personally created 3D digital art, this was posed in a game environment and then touched up in Photoshop. Do we consider which game this was copied from as copyright? Ellin Beltz (talk) 03:28, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Do you mean it is a screenshot? If so, then it must be a copyright violation unless the program is freeware. I can't see the source for some reason, but the uploader's other pieces of artwork were made with this which isn't freeware. Smartse (talk) 19:41, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'm really familiar with Poser. I looked at the other images in the flickr series and I don't think the user who uploaded this image to flickr made it. If you look at the images on both sides of it in the stream, you see totally different backgrounds and a lot sharper pixelation. The modeling items he uses for feet and hands are very different. His base reflectivity is totally different in serveral of the other pictures. I think this is a mesh-game screenshot, unless there's some serious documentation that the flickr user made it which I don't see in his comments below the picture, I think this one is from a game. COM:SCOPE 99of9 (talk) 01:34, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain a bit more, this would seem to be useful for colourful illustration? Thanks -- (talk) 01:39, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Colourful illustration is not our scope, educational projects are. It would be trivial to get a computer to generate a million similar "colourful illustrations" (of higher quality because they would be svg) if they were actually useful for educating anyone. The good news is that we already have many many images in Category:Colors that are educational. As a general rule, when a non-notable artist titles something "abstract", that's usually a strong implication that even they don't know of an educational purpose for their image.--99of9 (talk) 01:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, okay I understand the rationale. In this case, there may be a misunderstanding as this is not a computer graphic, but a photograph of a real store-front display. This makes it rather more interesting than a generated colourful illustration and I believe would make it eligible under scope as an example of striking and geometric simple store-front displays as well as potentially useful for an educational purpose. For this reason I think the small set of photos of store-fronts are suitable for  Keep. Thanks -- (talk) 08:07, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is no misunderstanding. I said I *could* create higher quality colourful illustrations (your words) very easily, if I actually thought anyone would benefit educationally from it. If you want to illustrate colourful store fronts, then I'm afraid you forgot to include the store.--99of9 (talk) 09:36, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, this was from a store front in Melbourne. I'm sure if we ask Graham he will tell us which shop it was. If I go to the effort of doing this, would that resolve your concern for this set of unusual photographs? Thanks -- (talk) 10:03, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No it wouldn't, because to be useful as an educational picture of colourful store fronts (if that is a topic about which someone might want to be educated), the photograph would need to show a store front. Frankly, I think you're grasping at straws with no clearly definable potential educational purpose. This is simply an abstract photo, of a graphic design. It's pretty, but not in scope. --99of9 (talk) 11:22, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just think that there is a reasonable interpretation of scope that covers this photograph. It is not my photograph, I would not be devastated if it gets deleted. I agree with you, it looks good, and it is from a photographer with a good track record of high quality photographs. I'm sorry if you feel that is grasping at straws, I would rather say that we have different interpretations of the details of where the boundaries of project scope lie. Thanks -- (talk) 11:34, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This file was initially tagged by Lomita as Copyvio (Copyvio) and the most recent rationale was: Couverture d'un livre
Converted by me to DR, as the only copyrightable element of the cover, the map, looks rather old to me. -- Túrelio (talk) 14:13, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's the cover of a French book (Couverture d'un livre), I do not know the rules but I am not sure that a book cover is allowed ? Xavxav (talk) 18:44, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The question is not "book cover", but the artwork on the book cover, in this case the map. Can anyone identify and date it? --Túrelio (talk) 19:05, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Its a Map of the french coast, there's Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Bayonne in it. Its at least from 18th century, most likely older. -- Herby (Vienna) (talk) 22:03, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
