Please can I usurp the account User:Moon, which has made no contributions. I also have an account on the Cornish Wikipedia at http://kw.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Moon, and I would like to have a unified account on both this project and that one. It's possible, but please take the following into account:

• There are accounts on other projects with this name. It would be good to crosslink from the one having edits if it's yours; if it's not yours, bear in mind that if you want to SUL your new account, you will have collisions with the new username on other projects.
• Your present account will be detached from your SUL account, that is, it will be not unified with your other accounts. If you want this for some reason, fine, but just confirm that you understand this, because it will make you have at least two diferent logins for Wikimedia projects (and from your request, you wanted things simplified, not complicated). Hi--I have the username "Narsil" under SUL. My primary account is on the English Wikipedia (w:User:Narsil), where I have 1,679 edits. My user matrix page is here: meta:User:Narsil/matrix (I'll add a note there shortly with a link back to this usurpation request).

I would like to usurp the User:Narsil username on Wikimedia Commons, and have it attached to my single login. The Narsil account on Wikimedia Commons does not have a user talk page or discussion page, and has zero edits.

CheckUsage is currently down, but if you could check the usage of those images. If they're used on other projects, then a disambiguation notice on your user and talk pages (if this rename pulls through) would be essential, as there would be a chance the images are being used off Wikimedia (and thus attribution is required). giggy _(:O) 08:36, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Carcharoth (Commons) to Carcharoth

I am en:User:Carcharoth (admin and 35,000+ edits), and I registered User:Carcharoth (Commons) here in January 2007 (have uploaded 35 pics and have made just over 150 edits so far, mainly asking questions and making a few comments here and there), but with the start of single user log-in, I need to sort out who has what name here on Commons before I can go ahead with creating a global account. I get the impression from the above that usurption only happens if an account has no edits, but maybe the advent of SUL will change this? User:Carcharoth (which is not me) has made edits and uploads here (see Special:Contributions/Carcharoth and User talk:Carcharoth, 18 edits to upload 18 pictures, plus 7 deleted pics, last edit-upload in August 2007, first edit-upload was in November 2006). I haven't tried contacting User:Carcharoth (his name seems to be in the upload descriptions). Possibly, based on the French edit summaries and this, there is a connection with fr:Utilisateur:Carcharoth, but again, I would need to make contact to ask that kind of question (presuming that is an acceptable question to ask). These are the only two name clashes I need to resolve before going ahead with creating a global account (the other 'accounts' on other wikis are phantom 'transwikiied' edits). Should I attempt to contact User:Carcharoth first on his user talk page (his e-mail is not enabled). I would be happy to do that, but is it best if someone else does that? I'd still be happy to contact the user in question and wait to see if they reply, but from the French Wikipedia user page, does it look like they have left (my French isn't good enough for that)? OK. I stuck it in a tranlsation engine, and it looks like they did leave, but I would note that if they are the same person, they uploaded a picture here on Commons in August 2007, so they didn't leave completely. Thanks for the reply. In one of my other replies above, I said "please feel free to try and contact the user, or ask me to contact them." I agree with you that it is best to contact users and ask them in cases like this, and once my other questions have been cleared up I will do so by leaving a note on his talk page (his e-mail address is not enabled). One concern I have is how to ask this sort of thing politely. Is there a standard way to ask "can I have your name?" that will cause least offence and not come across as demanding or rude? In some ways I think having intermediaries (the bureaucrats?) ask this sort of question might be best to avoid conflict, but if the standard here is for individuals to make their own approaches, I will do that. I will wait for a reply on that before asking him. One more thing. Personally, I am willing to do this usurpation request but there should be some effort to contact the user before, and ask if he doesn't mind being renamed. Ich hoffe Du hast das case-by-case verstanden, wenns oberhalb schon drohst. In diesem Fall handelt es sich um jemanden der ein paar Bilder hochgeladen hat weil er sie für ein Artikel gebraucht hat. Komischerweise hat er sich über ein Jahr auf der Heimatwiki nicht angemeldet bzw. irgendetwas editiert oder geschrieben. Auf meine Mails (was ein vorschlag von Birdy war) reagiert er ebenso wenig wie er sich hier blicken lässt. Und in diesem Fall finde ich das die Entscheidung case-by-case zu meinen gunsten etwas sinnvoller wäre. Ich arbeite seit einem Jahr mit und, wie ich finde, ist mein Beitrag mittlerweile respektabel (auch wenn bs.wiki in Deinen Augen eine kleine wiki sein mag). Ich würde Dich/Euch bitten die Entscheidung nochmals zu überdenken, gibt es denn keine Möglichkeit wie auf der en.wiki (Seha(Usurped))? Ansonsten hätte ich gerne einen Hinweis zu einer übergeordneten Stelle wo ich diese Diskussion bzw. mein Anliegen vorbringen kann. I contribute mainly to the Czech (cs) Wikipedia as Mmh. Some time ago, I created an account in Commons to upload images. I didn't succeed with the same name (I got some error, I don't remember more); that is why I tried to create an account with a new name Mmh_commons, and I succeeded, and started to use this as my account on Commons. Yesterday I was taught I could unify my accounts on Wikimedia; I tried it, but a new account Mmh on Commons was automatically created. The problem with accounts with edits is more important when they include image uploads, because we don't know if they have been reused outside of Wikimedia. here I made the request on what used to be the wikipedia username of the same name, but I had it changed to another-anomaly for more... anonymity. I wish I could find the diff where I made the request to change to another-anomaly on Wikipedia, but I can't, although this serves of proof of the username transition. I fail to see how my Wikipedia user account makes any influence on changing this one, but there isn't more verification than what I have just offered you. I don't want to sign my posts with my current name for fear of linking to the new page and web crawlers following it.

Jemori → Jem

I'd like to usurp the Jem account in Commons, as it has 0 edits. Jem is my current account in the Spanish wikipedia and my very preferred alias. I'm confused. If you mean I should login on the Russian wikipedia as jem and do the same diff operation, obviuosly I can't, because I have nothing to do with the "Russian jem". So, do you mean that only the Russian jem can usurp the jem account on Commons, even if he hasn't a Commons account (which I have), and my jem account on the Spanish wikipedia is older than his, and more active? And the SUL tool indicates that only the Russian account is attached to the SUL for jem, not the rest of projects. Could you please provide a convenient solution? Thanks again. Actually all projects except the few accounts that the SUL-tool shows belong to the russian account. E.g. the portuguese (ptwiki) one is not listed, but you will not be able to register it since it is reserved for the SUL-account and thus for the Russian user. So yes, if I have to take away an account from somebody then I would only give it to the owner of the global account. OK. I have written a message to the Russian jem but it seems an answer is very unlikely (maybe I can reach any English-speaker Russian admin to help me). I suppose that, if the Russian jem eventually agrees, it could be possible to allow him to keep using the jem account on Russian Wikipedia while transferring to me the global jem account, just the same way I'm now using a single wikipedia jem account. SUL was only switched on last spring (2008). Every account that existed before had to be attached by first changing the password to fit the one of the global account and then there had to call a special function in the settings. When the Russian Jem switched it on in September it could be that he just did not unite all accounts or that it does not belong to him and he was not interested in usurping. At the sign-up-form below the fields for user-name, password and email-address, there should be two check-boxes. One is Remember my login on this computer which is visible for everybody. And the second one, which should be only visible for users with extended rights, is the Ignore spoofing checks (Игнорировать проверки на схожие имена) which if checked will then not check for similar user-names. -- Cecil (talk) 16:43, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

 Done. If I were you I would already create the SUL-account. It is no problem to add accounts to it later. Even when renaming we can do that with both accounts in SUL. Thank you for your suggestion. I have waited for a moment when I am not involved in any conflict as a sysop on fr:. And if I created the SUL-account, it would automatically create the account « Litlok » when I log in wikis in which the renaming has not yet been done, just in order to check if it has been done (unless I log out before, but I may forget)... which would then require an usurp request and uselessly complicate the task of the bureaucrats on those wikis. At the moment, 13 out of 42 accounts have not yet been renamed. If nothing is done before tomorrow, despite the presence of bureaucrats on those wikis, I will probably make a request to a stewart. Request for having my old username and passord back

The user tvdm1 took my username "tvdm" on commons.wikimedia.org without my permission. My account was changed to "tvdm (usurped)", although I have useful contributions. I'm wondering which policy of the wiki-community that allows this to happen? According to what's said about requests for usurpation, such a request would normally be declined. Anyway, how can I get my username "tvdm" back?

I was first on the Commons with that name, and other users should respect that as long as I have useful contributions. I was requested for the change, but since I'm not so often logged in on commons or wikipedia, I did not get the chance to answer before the change was done. User names should be kept for infrequent users that do not take much part in the user talks, but concentrate their efforts on contributing to wikipedia on issues they know well.

I honestly don't think you can have the name back. The account is already part of the SUL-account and as soon as SUL 2.0 starts (whenever that will be), you would loose it again anyway as the user who currently has the account is an user with nearly 50.000 contributions in the projects. I can understand that you don't like the situation (I would not like it either) but in the current situation I can only suggest that you decide for a new name and we rename your account to it.  Not done. I am extremely sorry, but don't think we will be able to help you. You are quite right that now, at least, we have a policy of not usurping accounts with useful contributions however long ago they were made, so this usurpation would - if made today - have been refused. Unfortunately, last year when this was done our policy had not fully been settled, and was not written down. The 'crat who did it probably used a discretion that would not now be permitted. I suggest that the best plan would be to choose for yourself a new name that you can reserve across all wikis by SUL. Could a fellow crat please advise on this? In attempting to receate then block Michael180 to prevent impersonation, I get the message "Login error. Yes, I think so. I suppose that Michael180 ought to be re-created on Commons, then blocked, but as mentioned above I am unable to do that. When I helped my wife get renamed, what we did was regain control of the old account after some of the renames had been done. That is, with that old account as what she was logged in as, starting from some wiki not yet renamed, but after she was renamed on Commons, she did the SUL unification, then visited Commons, and that got the old account recreated ... she thus retained control of it without running into the " you can't create this account as it is SUL locked" problem. Disculpen por escribir en castellano pero, aunque comprendo el inglés, prefiero expresarme en mi idioma. Ok I want to clarify this messy request after talking on IRC. She had different passwords, and forgot the commons one. She SUL'ed the "Marinna" username, but she can't merge the commons account. And thus she can't login or upload now. She wants "Marinna" to be renamed to something else so she can enter with the SUL'es account.
