Hi Benchill -
Just wanted to say I'm impressed by the improvements you've made to my Dunedin map - well done! I take it you're another Dunedin local (I'm down in St. Clair) - you've even marked in the new Chinese gardens in! BTW, it might be better to refer to the blue roads on the map key as State Highway 1 rather than just as the north-south arterial. Good work - cheers, 203.100.214.190 08:56, 2 November 2007 (UTC) (en:User:Grutness)

[edit]Great photo! Hope you will be adding a lot more of your older collections. We may run around with our digicams all the time now, but the older images are often a crucial piece still lacking. Ingolfson 12:34, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Image description
[edit]Hi Benchill - regarding the Tautuku Beach image: Thanks for adding name and location. However, the "Looked almost tropical in that light." description is my own - and we should not go overboard in 'standardising' such, where this provides additional info or commentary added by the person who was actually there, at the time, and took the image. Image descriptions on Commons are not articles, and so should have a little more leeway than the stricter POV-rules for articles. Cheers and happy editing. Ingolfson 22:10, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- Of course there are limits. If I upload an image of a politican and note "Look how ugly his stupid mug is!" then that should be removed. However, removal of more innocous comments drains Wikipedia of colour a bit - I have edited image data from thousands of files, but I very much tend to leave such commentary alone. Cheers Ingolfson 22:12, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Heritage Register
[edit]Good work on the NZ heritage register (you will soon need to create subcategories, I'd suspect!). Never knew all these were on the list. You must be working through the official database, checking whether Commons has media of it, I presume? Ingolfson (talk) 07:16, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, initially I did start from the Register and try to find matching files on Commons, but I've found a much more efficient way is looking at files under the Category:Buildings in New Zealand and checking the Register for anything that looks like a possibility. I use AWB to list all the files and exclude ones already categorised. To avoid rechecking files later I was thinking of adding a hidden category checked against NZHPT Register.
I saw they picked up your photo of the band rotunda in Albert Park, congrats! If you'd like to see more of your photos in the Register, they have a flickr group. Benchill (talk) 07:59, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Funny that - just the one I was thinking of recently. But hey, that's why I upload pictures after all, and as PD. No hassle, greatest use... Ingolfson (talk) 09:11, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Photo: Otago Peninsula War Memorial
[edit]Gidday Benchill, Just want to say that the photo of the Otago Peninsula War Memorial is brilliant; as it happens I walked up the track and took some photos Saturday but the camera I was using was a small Samsung, so I couldn't get the detail from the front. I will be using your photo as part of a University assignment on WW I war memorials around Dunedin. Much appreciated, cheers 202.124.106.220 02:01, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, glad you like it, I also found the front a bit tricky. User Ingolfson deserves some of the credit, it was their photo which motivated me to go up there an take a look, having driven past dozens of times but never seen it up close. Benchill (talk) 02:32, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Ooops, forgot to log in to Commons last time; I've just been looking at the Wikipedia articles on Caversham and St Clair which are both well done; good to see these parts of the city are appreciated. Just for interest, while researching I came across this Otago War Memorials and OBHS Memorial gates; some interesting history on the latter site. Cheers Minorhistorian (talk) 11:03, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

That just got actioned. No discussion necessary, because it is simple Commons syntax to use the "Something OF Specific" logic. We don't use "German vehicles", but "Vehicles of Germany", we don't use "France people" or "French people", we use "People of France". The parent category that applied to my own change requests is called "Alumni by university or college in New Zealand", not "New Zealand university or college alumni". So I don't understand why a discussion is necessary for this. No offense, but that would take two weeks of waiting for a totally noncontroversial change. Ingolfson (talk) 11:17, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Further, other categories like this one or this one already are almost totally consistent with the correct format. While this level of consistency doesn't exist in all countries, my change proposed to modify all within New Zealand to the normal Commons syntax, so is strongly beneficial for consistency as well. Cheers, Ingolfson (talk) 11:22, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Is there a policy "Something OF Specific"? It doesn't seem sensible to go through changing them all to "Alumni of University" if most were "University alumni", like at Category:Alumni by university or college in the United States. They were also aligned with the Wikipedia categories, which means additional category redirects. Benchill (talk) 11:32, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Category:Faculty by university or college in the United States is the same story, I see 1 out of 88. Benchill (talk) 11:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi Benchill, recently you have recategorized the file above with a cat 'D-ABAH'. Without having researched further I assume that the categories 'Airplanes by registration' is supposed to hold registrations that actually exist(ed) and are/ have been used for the aircraft in question. To my knowledge this has never been the case for the DC-6 in Bad Laer. It was used for years by a Jordanian King (afaik Talal of Jordan) and was never actually registered in Germany. Do you know something different? If not, I'd suggest to revert. --Hagar66 (talk) 08:22, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Hagar66, looking on Airliners.net at this aircraft, it's been through several owners and registrations - one photo says "Has been operated by American Airlines as N90702, Air Jordan as JY-ACE, Aerovias Panama as HP-361, Sudwestflug and Germanair as D-ABAH untill sold in 1969 as a coffee bar. Moved to Bad Laer in November 2003." Category:Aircraft by registration has a method when the registration changes, the old registration becomes a subcat of the new. Benchill (talk) 12:05, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
- I stand corrected! :-) Thx for the speedy answer. --Hagar66 (talk) 12:18, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Why would you want to do this in a way that removes the information that these are US Navy images from Hawaii (since that is not a supercategory of the target category)? - Jmabel ! talk 00:46, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
- Of the 1847 files in Category:Pearl Harbor, about 99% are from the US Navy. At the moment there's estenially two categories for US Navy photos from Pearl Harbor. Those images are all also in Category:PD US Navy. Benchill (talk) 00:56, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Why no-standard modifications?
[edit]Hi, I have seen your modification in Air force of Ghana category but I don't understand why you have used a unstandardized term (see Category:Air force by country). Know you something I do not know?--Threecharlie (talk) 07:03, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- It's not standardised. I took a look at Category:Air force by country prior to the move, it has a mix of proper names and generic terms - Category:Royal Australian Air Force, Category:United States Air Force for example. I've used the name from Ghana Air Force, which I understand is the proper name for the organization. Using the proper name matches it with Category:Ghana Navy and Category:Ghana Army also. Benchill (talk) 07:19, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Why...
[edit]... did you do this edit? Regards, High Contrast (talk) 17:38, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
- That was an accident, thanks for fixing it. I added several hundred that contained the phrase Amphibious Assault Vehicle, next to hundreds of others in thumbnail view it must have slipped through. Benchill (talk) 01:18, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
The Azores Category
[edit]Hey Benchill, I must have been seeing things badly yesterday night. I thought I noticed that the "The Azores" category was a visible subgroup in the "Azores" category (I hope that made sense). Since, for a time, there existed one image in "The Azores" category, I assumed (incorrectly) that someone was duplicating a category within the same name-space within the valid category. Regardless of how that sounds, I noticed today that "The Azores" does not appear as a category under the "Azores" category and will not revert or make issue of this. Obviously, I was up too late.Ruben JC (Zeorymer) (talk) 09:53, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Ruben JC, I don't think you were hallucinating, I understand what happens is, when a category redirect contains items then it appears in the parent category, and conversely no items it doesn't appear in the parent. So the file that was there temporarily triggered The Azores appearing as a subcategory of Azores? I agree with you it ought not to be a permanent subcategory. US Navy cats
[edit]Martin H is renaming several "images of US Navy" cats. So my question is: should the intermediate cats be deleted and should Category:Broken category redirects be repaired or deleted ? --Foroa (talk) 16:31, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- There was a discussion about this at Commons:Categories_for_discussion/2011/04/Category:United_States_Navy_images_by_location. I'd really like the category redirects to be kept/repaired, because then the spelling/capitialisation variations all get funnelled into the correct place. There maybe around thirty new files each day, many of which would go directly into the existing category scheme, will they automatically go into Martin H's new categories, or end up here? Perhaps Multichill has an idea about automatically putting new files into the correct categories without the need for redirects. Another solution would be to ask Martin H to reverse the changes, there don't appear to be too many so far. Benchill (talk) 00:39, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Cats for Category:New Zealand
[edit]I agree with you that Category:Archipelagoes of the Pacific Ocean is better than Category:Islands, but it seems pretty clear that keeping Category:Countries of Oceania is over categorization because Category:Countries of Polynesia is a child of Category:Countries of Oceania.
The same applies to the Category:Cook Islands, Category:Niue and Category:Tonga.
On the opposite score, I note that Category:French Polynesia is not in Category:Countries of Polynesia but is in Category:Countries of Oceania.
I might be inclined to simply eliminate Category:Countries of Polynesia since there are only four (or five, if you include the French).
Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 01:28, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- I overlooked Category:Countries of Polynesia, you're right it is overcategorisation. The en article New Zealand is in both Category:Oceanian countries and Category:Polynesia. Benchill (talk) 01:46, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Forgive me for nagging -- but do you agree that eliminating Category:Countries of Polynesia would be the best solution? Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:44, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- I don't have a strong opinion either way. If in doubt it's usually best to leave it, alternatively the category could be nominated for discussion to seek more input. Benchill (talk) 23:35, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:NZ-L Benmore.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:NZ-L Benmore.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thanks for uploading File:TexasClipperInSpiChannel.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:TexasClipperInSpiChannel.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
