Interface admin request

Hi, I am requesting the interface admin flag to help manage the backlog at Category:Pages using invalid self-closed HTML tags. I am competent in both JS and CSS and have the flag on dewiki too. Raymond 18:29, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

Translation Administrator

From time to time I run into things like Commons:Deletion requests/Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Florida Keys and new gallery pages which are tagged with {{Translate}} and need to be deleted -- usually because they were created in error. It would be useful if I could do the deletion, but only translation admins can delete pages that are tagged that way. I could probably add the permission to my account myself, but it's better if someone else does it. Thanks, .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 22:48, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi. Please remove the translation admin flag from User:Base (WMF) - the account was locked in 2017, with the explanation that they no longer work for the WMF foundation. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 09:49, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

I need account creator

I need the account creator (noratelimit) right. I simply can't do my work anymore due to Phabricator: Ratelimit on Commons is way too aggressive/broken.

I requested this before (the need is even more pressing this time, a few edits literally take hours) but back then, no bureaucrat responded. (and Krd preferred not to assist for personal reasons) It wasn't denied, it just took so long I went through the pain and completed the task without noratelimit.

Pinging @99of9, Odder (some bureaucrats who recently edited here as I know Krd prefers not to assist) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:11, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

@4nn1l2: thanks.. I'm busy lining up another set of edits, but I don't know how I'm realistically going to apply them while ratelimits are haunting me. The bureaucrats I pinged haven't been here for a few days. I'm just sh*t out of luck it seems. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:10, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

CC-Zero-Project (former Public Domain Project)

I‘m the founder of the Public Domain Project (user:Pdproject) and have worked many years with the GLAMwiki Toolset.

In 2019 another person take control over my foundation and Wikimedia CH have recommended me to leave and start with a new project.

On 6 January 2020 I have started under the new name CC-Zero-Project (user:Namrood). Wikimedia payed me the annual GLAM budget and I need just the user rights of the GLAMwiki Toolset to continue my work as a volunteer and meeting the agreement with Wikimedia to upload public domain music files of my historical 78 rpm archive.

Many thanks for your help.

Did you use the GLAMwiki Toolset before? If not, please create an account on Commons beta for testing. --Krd 07:02, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Note that you (Krd) likely won't be able to set user rights on beta commons due to phab:T243123. --DannyS712 (talk) 07:25, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
I don't understand that phab ticket, but I'm still confident it could work, and would like to give it a try. --Krd 07:37, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

I created Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2020. I asked stewards to remove admin bit from two users: m:Special:Diff/19793654. All other inactive admins were notified by talk page message and email except for User:Ronhjones who could not be reached via email. 4nn1l2 (talk) 03:36, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Great job, thank you! --Krd 06:10, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
4nn1l2, I think Geni may have been de-admined in error. Geni was de-admined because they were notified they had too few admin actions 6 months ago, signed in response to the notice as required, but then supposedly failed to make five admin actions within the period of six months starting at the time of the notice (per Commons:Administrators/De-adminship#De-adminship process as a result of inactivity). However, Geni was notified at 01:33, 10 August 2019 (UTC) and Geni subsequently made four deletions within a hour of the notification and another three deletions in the next six months (see [1]) — so at least seven admin actions, not many, but more than the five required. The report at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2020 says they only did three. It looks like the error was caused by looking back six months from the time of the inactivity scan (which was at 02:56, 10 February 2020, an hour or so more than six months from the last scan), rather than six months forward from the time of notice. The Admin Inactivity Tool looks back six months, which is the correct tool for identifying admins with no admin actions in the last six months. However, to identify which previously notified admins had no actions in the six months from notice, the correct tool is the log or the the adminstats tool. —RP88 (talk) 09:42, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
@RP88: I got your point; it's indeed a matter of hours (1 hour and 23 mins to be specific).
I have no serious objections against returning their admin bit. But at first, I would like to hear the opinion of other users. Should we follow the letter of the policy or its spirit?
Let me explain myself. These are his/her admin actions between the last two checks:

According to your interpretation, since the current check was done at 02:56, 10 February 2020, but they have only 3 admins actions in the previous 6 month (18 November 2019, 7 November 2019, and 08:57, 10 August 2019) their name should be again listed at the current inactivity check (even if we don't remove their admin bit now). Is this really the intention of the policy? That an admin be listed on the inactivity checks two times consecutively? I don't believe so. The last 4 inactivity checks have been performed on the 10th of Feb or Aug (the last three of which by me). I have been careful to run the check on this date. These checks can be done anytime on Feb/Mar or Aug/Sep. Suppose I had run the check on the last day of February. Then it was no longer a matter of hours, but days!
The last thing, if bureaucrats decide to return his/her admin bit, I will apologize him/her personally. 4nn1l2 (talk) 10:39, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: This did happen in 2017 (see here) and that time the bureaucrats decided to return the admin bits. The gap that time was longer, three days instead of an hour or so. —RP88 (talk) 10:53, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
I will reassign the bit per above discussion. --Krd 11:39, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
I apologized to them for the inconvenience. I also asked them to sign the current inactivity check. Email was sent too. 4nn1l2 (talk) 11:53, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
I thank those involved for their professional approach.
However I would have much preferred to see Geni run a re-confirmation RFA, in the light of many years of doing the minimum to retain sysop access. There is a big difference between a sysop being caught out by bureaucracy and the statistical facts of this case.
An apology for the perfectly correct application of policy was unnecesary. -- (talk) 11:57, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. This was my personal decision. 4nn1l2 (talk) 12:02, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
To be clear, I too think you don't have anything to apologize for. I would have been happy with a decision either way — this was definitely an edge case that only occurs on the margins for admins with little activity, for which the current process is cumbersome to implement with the existing tools, and your interpretation was defensible. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my nitpicking :-). —RP88 (talk) 12:52, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Request for translation admin rights EN-> FR on Commons

Hi all

I'm user wladek92. I push this request for translation admin rights on Commons. I regularly translate technical items from EN -> FR and Ive seen french pages remain with english blocks inside because the markup has not been made. I translate most of time since 10 years and Im about 20 000 on translatewiki and 80 00 updates on MediaWiki) and I would like simply be allowed to set the <translate sections and validate 'To be translated' to retrieve the corresponding items on Commons, thanks. Request for translation administrator rights

Hi. I'd like to request translation admin rights to be able to better help with translations here on commons. As I see, currently there are no translation admin here on Commons who comes from the Vietnamese Wikipedia or speaks Vietnamese.--Atalk 01:50, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Comment @A: Hi, I'm not sure you need that permission. I checked on Commons, Metawiki and Translatewiki and you don't have a translation registry. Regarding the language (vi), it can be added within a translation, but reviewing this, there are several pages that require a translator. I think you should familiarize yourself a bit with the Translate extension. Mazbel21:33, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
I have finished translating some pages here on Commons and on Meta. I'm now quite familiar with the extension's mechanic because it's quite easy to understand. Howewer there is still a lot to do because there are not that many Vietnamese translators here on Commons.--Atalk 02:10, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Interface administrator for User:Ahmad252

Hello.

I'd like to request for interface administration right. I'm familiar with HTML, CSS and JS. I have made one (two, if we also count the reversal of action) successful related edit request here, and try to check edit requests frequently and help in the backlogs (examples: 1 and 2 in template namespace, and some others in file namespace). Sometimes I also localize useful scripts for Commons (such as User:Ahmad252/scripts/Gadget-CollapsibleSidebar.js and a script on Test Wiki that I plan to move to Commons once it's ready). Currently I want to use it to fulfill Special:PermaLink/414616830#MediaWiki:LicenseReview.js as a gadget if there is a consensus for it and also to fulfill edit requests. I have the 2FA enabled.

Misplaced invitation to "tag" images

As discussed at Commons:Village pump#Misplaced invitation to "tag" images, there appears to be no consensus for the display of an invitation to use the new Computer-aided tagging tool to all uploaders. How can this notice be turned off, pending a discussion of whether and when it should be displayed? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:33, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

@MHolloway (WMF): Could you confirm whether the WMF believe the implementation on Wikimedia Commons is a WMF systems choice that can or cannot be rejected by the Commons community, say, as represented by this project's elected Bureaucrats? If you are not the right point of contact within the WMF, please do recommend who is. Thanks -- (talk) 12:47, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

What exactly do you expect bureaucrats to do? I think it can technically be disabled by any admin (or perhaps interface admin), but as there seem to be some proposals open, I think we should wait for their outcome. If I miss anything, please advise. --Krd 07:00, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
"What exactly do you expect bureaucrats to do?" Answer my question. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:02, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
I read Krd's answer as being sufficient, in that any open discussions should be closed before proceeding with an action (something anyone can do). Secondly that any admin can make this change, not waiting for 'crats or a WMF employee to do something or agree anything further. -- (talk) 12:45, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm not asking 'crats to do anything other than answer my question. You also refer to "something anyone can do", without saying what exactly that is. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:37, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
By anyone I really mean you, and by do I mean close Commons:Village_pump#Misplaced_invitation_to_"tag"_images. If you did that, then you could ask any admin to enact the will of the people. -- (talk) 14:03, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
So what is the question? How this technically can be disabled? I don't know that. --Krd 12:48, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Ongoing disagreements

Hello. I’m concerned that we have a difficult situation potentially boiling out of control. In the last day or so there has been a CU block followed by block reversions, administrators blocking each other, at least two administrator resignations, and a lot of angry rhetoric about it all. There are three sections about these issues on the administrator boards including one section that was trying to calm things but has ended up as a continuation thread. Can a bureaucrat please intervene and attempt to heal this fractious discussion? As two of you are also CU, it should preferably be one or more of the others. Thank you in advance. -Green Giant (talk) 00:56, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

In full disclosure, I have also notified m:Ombudsman commission about the issue. GMGtalk 00:59, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Could we please have some bureaucrat intervention on the issues that are still being discussed at the admin board? Cheers. -Green Giant (talk) 14:59, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
Indeed. This is the right time to prove your "community role" as a crat. If you want the users to regain their trust in the community, I suggest intervening as soon as you can. Thanks, pandakekok9 02:51, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: that’s not a helpful comment. My request was not for the bureaucrats to "prove themselves". It was because of genuine concern that we might have more instability and lose more volunteers. Bureaucrats are volunteers too, and we should not be expecting them to jump to attention when needed. You will notice I left more than a week between my comments. --Green Giant (talk) 14:40, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I have read the three threads. I am unfortunately not in the position to spend enough time investigating this to resolve it. Very broadly if I understand correctly: the CUs' group decision should be respected (especially by those of us who can't see the evidence). The resignation after acknowledging an unblocking error seems like a noble move, and I would look favourably on this in a new RfA. After the block was reinstated, changing settings does not strike me as wheel warring. That's a fine thing to discuss if people want, but going straight for a desysop discussion seems over the top. It also seemed that the (even incomplete) discussion would not lead to clear desysop consensus. So as far as I can see I would not advocate for any further *actions* to be taken. Whether a discussion was prematurely closed and should be reopened is orders of magnitude less important than losing admins. So I would advise that even those who feel aggrieved that they didn't get a chance to say more on the issues, swallow the impulse to attack in defence of their rights, for the sake of community. If policy issues have arisen that need to be carefully weighed - it is best to wait and decide these without referring to specifics or individual actions. Finally, I feel no need to "prove" anything - we are all volunteers here, and nobody is on trial. --99of9 (talk) 05:17, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the constructive reply 99of9. This is pretty much a succinct analysis of the issues. There is just one further section left at the admin board, namely the one about Magog. Although there are still comments being made there, I feel it would be best to close it sometime soon because it looks as though the discussions are going in different directions. The original purpose was to ascertain the level of support for a desysop request but I don’t think there is clear consensus for that as yet. --Green Giant (talk) 14:40, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
  • Thank you, Green Giant, for starting this thread and bringing attention to the concerns that were raised. Closing the final thread (#Magog the Ogre) is an important step in the recovery and return to normal operations on Commons for many of the involved users. I look forward to the community turning their attention away from specific individuals and towards improving and strengthing our policies and guidelines. ~riley (talk) 23:44, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
  •  Comment Thanks Green Giant for taking this initiative and 99of9 for this great and balanced review. Hope The proposal by ~riley on "Checkuser blocks" at Blocking policy is a good move to resolve the issues. Jee 05:10, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Materialscientist user rights

Materialscientist is an Administrator here, and an Administrator and CheckUser at en.wiki.

This is just an enquiry as to whether his abuse of CU privileges at en.wiki (specifically performing a "fishing" check on me, and lying about the fact he has done it), would be considered serious enough to affect his user rights here?

I'm asking in some hope he is going to see some kind of consequences for his invasion of my privacy in regards his participation with Foundation projects, because it sadly seems he will face zero consequences for it at en.wiki. But efforts in that regard are ongoing.

I understand if you take the view that the apparent lack of CU oversight over there is their problem (but it does seem relevant that privacy is a global expectation), but suffice to say, you should probably have this incident on record (and his refusal to account for it) before you ever consider granting him CU rights here.

BarryBoggside (talk) 18:19, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

I don't see any need for action at Commons, especially as no measures are in place against the user at enwiki. --Krd 09:29, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
I would not put much store in the lack of measures at en.wiki. What this person has done to me, is no different to what Bbb23 did to thousands of users on that project, and it took years before any measures were put in place to prevent him performing illegitimate checks on the basis that the means justified the ends. It is obviously highly relevant, given a very large part of that failure was that every single other CheckUser at en.wiki, either chose to assist Bbb23, or at the very least, chose not to speak out (I suspect he was only eventually reported by one of them when it became rather obvious he was well known on that project and externally, for only one thing, a willingness to perform these sort of checks). You will note in my case, the only person to show me any sympathy, was an ordinary Admin, and I am only blocked (and locked out of my talk page) because two other CheckUsers apparently wish it, and neither has made any comment about whether the checks they have performed were legitimate. Clearly they think that if they don't answer, the answer cannot be used against them. The parallels with the sort of corruption that surrounded Bbb23, are obvious. So there is nothing here to persuade anyone outside of that circle, that lessons have been learned or houses have been cleaned. But if you think a flagrant disregard of the privacy policy, and his deliberate refusal to answer questions about his use of the blocking tool, doesn't affect his status here, I guess that's up to you, as a local Bureaucrat. At least he can't (directly) invade user's privacy here, he would require a co-conspirator. I am reassured in that respect that the two other CheckUsers have no such rights here. Asked and answered. We do not import enwiki problems to Commons. --Krd 03:55, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
You obviously could be though, with that attitude. On what basis do you assume Materialscientist has different ethics on one project than another? Other than perhaps having nobody here to cover his back, as he has on en.wiki. I see no reason why you could assume he would be more honest and less prone to a abusing his powers as an Administrator here, that at en.wiki. And privacy protection is a global issue for a reason. I'm fine with you not caring what happens on another project, that is your right as a local functionary, but please don't do so on some obviously flawed assumption that people are capable of changing their entire character depending on what logo exists in the top left hand corner. Your approach will look even odder to outsiders if the Foundation gets its wish and rebrands this place as the Wikipedia Commons. At the very least, you could reassure people who primarily contribute on Commons, that Materialscientist couldn't or wouldn't invade their privacy at en.wiki, in order to abuse his power over them over here, by saying something other than effectivel, I don't care, not my problem. Email issues

For unknown reasons, my email address "requires confirmation" and is currently not forwarding emails to my email address (same since 1994). I pushed the button and requested a confirmation be sent as instructed. No confirmation has ever arrived. I tried this again, to receive an error message essentially that the email had been sent. If it was sent, it was not received. There is no instruction what to do for a problem; so I have no idea how to fix it. I am informing you to please use my actual email address which you have from before if you need my attention on anything until this is resolved - if it ever is. At present it is not working at all and there is no user name or any form of help on the pages surrounding this issue. What fun!! Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:40, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Now later, I have checked again, still no message from Wiki. Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:10, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Checked again, still no email. Tried to get another one sent to be told "already sent, wait a few minutes." Definition of a minute is 60 seconds. This is over a full day now. Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:57, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
There does not appear to be a related Phabricator task. As it's been more than a day, it may be useful to raise a new task on Phab, it may be a new ops or even a security issue. -- (talk) 21:31, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
@Fae: I have no idea how to start a Phabricator whatever it is. Sorry, maybe they should provide some instructions somewhere if this doesn't work. BTW, I am still waiting for a link to show up in my email, now it's hours later. I changed my talk page header to reflect that I cannot receive email through the system. I don't think I am the only one, others including ~riley seem to not have email links anymore. Ellin Beltz (talk) 00:17, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure whether this is related to your issue, but I also had some problems with the EmailUser function. 1989 sent me an email on 17 April at around 04:00 server time, according to the notification system. I checked my email, and never got it. When I also sent an email to 1989 earlier than 04:00, I had the "email me a copy of my message" enabled. For some reason I never received a copy. It's only after 1989 sent it again in 13:26 the same day that I was able to receive emails again. Really strange. pandakekok9 01:56, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Emailing myself today, it looks fine. If problems persist/come back then we need to document the examples with times in a Phabricator task to prompt WMF ops properly to investigate.
BTW, I would be very happy to raise a Phab task for this on behalf of others, but the examples of failures would need to be well detailed, preferably with timestamps from the sent emails (i.e. copy yourself in on emails you send through the system so WMF ops can go precisely to the timed logs). -- (talk) 10:00, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

(not sure how this is normally noted) oppose – uses the right very rarely on wikidata. The concerns raised at m:Meta:Requests for translation adminship/ZI Jony appear to still apply, c.f. d:Special:Diff/1132541291 (probably should have included tvars) and d:Special:Diff/1093250437 (shouldn't have been there, and shouldn't have been translated, but rather removed), for examples --DannyS712 (talk) 06:20, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi @DannyS712: I don't want it permanently! I noticed that you marked Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments in Bangladesh/Header and Template:WLMBD links for translation, if you could mark Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Bangladesh for translation then I can withdraw this request. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 14:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
I already did the first two before my comment above; I've done the third now. Note that translation unit tags should rarely be added manually - unless your cleaning up or fixing them to better reflect changes to the text, they should be left to the extension. I think we can keep this for a while and see if the account will be recovered. There should be no harm as long as it is locked. --Krd 06:13, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
As the account is locked, rather than blocked, are these decisions out of the domain of project 'crats? -- (talk) 10:50, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
If there is any evidence that the account is compromised, it should be blocked locally and have all advanced permissions removed. But if the account is locked, it cannot be used in any way, so there is no immediate need for any action. If it stays locked, I think bot flag should be removed just to keep the records clean. --Krd 16:38, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Bot is no longer active, it's blocked by it's operator. You may want to remove the bot flag (for clear stats/record). Though I had posted a message on operator's talkpage regarding this but they aren't not active on Commons and prefer to comment only on absolutely necessary things, therefore I asked them on IRC and they have no concerns and are fine with the removal. Also remove the LR flag together (I can do that by myself but if both things can be done in a single action/log then why not). Thanks! -- CptViraj (talk) 03:03, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Request account creators flag

Hello, recently I am fixing the wrong lr templates for many pages to make the review tool work normally, but because I use PAWS, I am often subject to editing rate restrictions. I want to apply for this permission to complete the task in one week. Thank you. -akko (talk) 12:03, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Can you explain why you think the Account Creator right will help here? How many accounts are you planning to create? --99of9 (talk) 23:35, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
@99of9: I don't want to create any accounts, because I want to expert the editing restrictions. [2] shows that this seems to be allowed. Example: [3]. -akko (talk) 12:27, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
Can you please elaborate the an edit as the given example should be done at all? What exactly does it fix? --Krd 12:50, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
@Krd: MediaWiki:Gadget-LicenseReview.js can not match {{licensereview| }}, so it can not properly work in have this format template. Example editd change {{licensereview| }} to {{Licensereview}} to make the script work properly. -akko (talk) 15:25, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
(non-crat comment) IMHO it is better to fix the gadget instead. -- CptViraj (talk) 15:28, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
