English: Hebrew point hiriq (U+05B4) or chirik. Used to mark the vowel /i/. When a letter combined with it is followed by the Hebrew letter yod on the left, the combination of the vowel point and that following yod is named hiriq male, used to mark a long vowel /iː/, but modern Hebrew frequently just uses the letter yod (omitting the preceding hiriq) read with mater lectionis; in Yiddish orthography, the hiriq is moved under the following yod to represent hiriq male. This vowel point may also extremely rarely preceded by the Hebrew point sheva or schwa to represent hataf hiriq for the reduced vowel /i/. The special combinations made with the point hiriq for hiriq male and hataf hiriq are not used in modern Hebrew and not encoded isolately in Unicode.
