holam haser for vav Hebrew point holam haser for vav (U+05BA)
Upload media Instance of Subclass of Part of
English : Hebrew point
holam haser for vav (U+05BA). Used to mark the vowel /o/ on the
right side above the base consonant
vav with which it combines; in that case, it represents
holam haser , pronounced as a long /oː/ but the
vav consonant is not silent and is to be pronounced with another vowel after it, and the
holam is in fact associated with the previous consonant (this case is rare and interpreted as
holam haser also pronounced the same way). Earlier encoded texts tried to distinguish this case by using ZWNJ (zero-width non-joiner) between the two syllables. Such encoding is deprecated for this rare case (occuring essentially in old Biblical texts but still much less than
holam male ), where
holam haser is now preferably encoded distinctly when it occurs above a non-silent consonantal
vav , where the
holam dot is shifted to the right side above
vav , instead of the left side for the much more frequent regular
holam male . This distinctive diacritic is not used in modern Hebrew.
