English : Hebrew point
dagesh or mapiq (U+05BC);
shuruq or
shuruk in non-Ashkenazi naming, or
melopum in Ashkenazi naming.
The dagesh point falls within a base consonant to mark a “soft” plosive pronunciation of the consonant (known as dagesh qal , literally “light dot”), or more rarely a “hard” geminated pronunciation (known as dagesh ḥazaq , literally “hard dot”) of that consonant.
The mapiq point and the shuruq point (in non-Ashkenazi naming, but melopum point in Ashkenazi naming) are identical in form and placement, but play a different role. They are used to distinguish vowels from consonants on letters with matres lectionis (e.g. with the Tiberian vocalisation): mapiq is used notably on the letter he (ה) to indicate that the corresponding letter is to be pronounced as a consonant (/h/ for the letter he ), although in a position where the letter usually indicates a vowel (/a/ or /e/ for the letter he ); and shuruq /melopum is used on the letter vav or waw (ו) to indicate that the letter is to be pronounced as a vowel /u/. They are rarely used in modern Hebrew.
