First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Categories of the Chiquitos Missions

Hi Willaq! You recently changed categories in Bolivia related topics. From what I noticed you removed Category:Bolivia in many places, which is a good thing. However I have a question about the following changes you did:

  1. add "Category:Churches in Bolivia" to "Category:Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos" and
  2. remove "Category:Churches in Bolivia" from church pictures which are also in "Category:Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos"

In my understanding and in common usage, the term "Mission" in Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos does not refer to the churches only but to the mission settlements. As you can see from the files in this category there are not only church-related items but also population statistics, a picture of a lake, maps, etc. So the "Category:Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos" should not be in the "Category:Churches in Bolivia"! Hola Bamse, lo siento mucho, no hablo el ingles. Parece que observas los cambios a las imágenes de "Category:Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos" que los quite de "Category:Churches in Bolivia", la razón es que me pareció que no era necesario que también esten en esta categoría, ya que aparecen enlazados, es decir en "Category:Churches in Bolivia" aparece "Category:Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos". Hola Willaq! Lo siento, no hablo mucho el español. Es que las "Misiones jesuíticas del Chiquitos" no son solamente las iglesias pero son pueblos. Por eso la Category:Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos contiene mapas, estadisticas de la poblacion,... (no solo iglesias). bamse (talk) 10:06, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hola. Estoy de acuerdo con lo que dices, varios de estos pueblos conozco, algunos son capitales de provincias o municipios, y por eso mismo hice el enlace con "Category:Department of Santa Cruz". Sin embargo, no se puede negar que lo mas importante y lo que caracteriza a estos pueblos o ex misiones son sus iglesias (reconstruidos o restaurados), por lo que han sido declarados Patrimonio de la Humanidad, por esta razón hice el enlace con "Category:Churches in Bolivia", ya que casi todas las imágenes son de sus iglesias; de otra manera, habría que también mandar estas imágenes a la categoría de Iglesias, que según mi opinión es innecesario, bastaría con el enlace a esta categoría. --Willaq (talk) 21:26, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hola Túrelio. No entiendo la razón del porqué haz cancelado el File:Testimonio de un músico peruano.jpg, yo copie el artículo en una hemeroteca, teniendo entendido que es de dominio público y que es posible usar para fines no lucrativos o económicos, respetando y atribuyendo la autoría correspondiente. yo no ha cancelado el File:Testimonio de un músico peruano.jpg, era un admin collega. Es problema es, que el imagen es libre solo "para fines no lucrativos o económicos". Eso no es sufficiente para Commons, todos los imagenes han de ser libre "para fines lucrativos o económicos". --Túrelio (talk) 16:53, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Permission request to use Montesinos photo for a book cover

I need your expressed written permission for the publisher to use the photo. Would you grant this, please?
