Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:57, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

File:Wyoming Sculpture, Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine, USA - September 2007 E.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. File:Wyoming Sculpture, Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine, USA - September 2007.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Some examples of licensing statuses commonly found on the Internet, but forbidden on Commons, include:
- Creative Commons Non-Commercial Only (-NC) licenses
- Creative Commons No-Derivatives (-ND) licenses
- This image has both NC and ND restriction on it at upload and would not be allowed on Wikicommons.
Copyright status: File:Wistia Logo.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Wistia Logo.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Crest - 3D White Strips - July 2013.jpeg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

Hello WestportWiki. I couldn't help noticing this file has an odd name. Does it really need "Dublin" three times? :P Green Giant (talk) 19:10, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- hi Green Giant, yes that does look funny (I normally use the address of where the photo was shot to provide reference). Can you please help to rename the files as I'm not sure how to do that? WestportWiki (talk) 13:33, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- You can request file renames by adding the Rename template at the top of the file page. It needs three parameters - the new name, the criterion and the reason. If you tell me a new name for this file, I can rename it for you. Green Giant (talk) 14:38, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you Green Giant. Thank you for sharing the link to the renaming template. I'll give it a go to save you from having to do it. Which number do you suppose this case would come under for reason for the change? thank you WestportWiki (talk) 02:07, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- This rename would come under #1 - uploader request, but otherwise it could be done as a #5 - obvious errors. Green Giant (talk) 08:04, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
