Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

[edit]
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,

ChemDraw

[edit]

Hi, it's me again. I simplified some links in your help page.
How about this offer: I can expand {{Chemdraw}} that the parameter "v" will add an advancing {{ValidSVG}}, making it obsolete to insert it explicitly by editing. I would like more to create the {{InvalidSVG}} when no "v" is set, but this may cause that too many files need a corrective edit. I can do it immediately, if you want. It can then be mentioned in your help page. sarang사랑 10:40, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The template {{Chemdraw}} or {{Created with Chemdraw}} was never created with editing purposes in mind. This will only create confusion. If the creator of the Chemdraw wants the file to be valid, he will put the Invalid/Valid-template on his page. The drawback to this is of course is that the creators of Chemdraw-files who don't put the Valid/InvalidSVG on their page will slip through and their files will be unnecessary large, but that is something we will have to put up with. A link to my newly created page on the Chemdraw-template page and the Wikipedia Chemdraw-page is also possible. That is my opinion. Wereldburger758 (talk) 11:36, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Valid/invalid source code for SVG

[edit]

Hi Wereldburger758, I have just noticed you did something to File:Lactobacillic_acid_4_biosynthesis.svg and File:Lactobacillic acid 2.svg to turn the invalid source codes of the SVG's I uploaded to valid ones. First of all thank you for this, but I would be grateful if you could give me some advice (or a link) so I can prevent producing invalid source codes for the future. A third file File:Lactobacillic acid 3 hydrogenation.svg was also corrected by you, but it lost the reaction arrows, can you please help me with this? It is used on de.wikipedia.org and doesn't make much sense now. Thanks in advance for your help, --A doubt (talk) 23:01, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have redone the file File:Lactobacillic acid 3 hydrogenation.svg. It should be okay now. As for the link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:SVG/basic1. That will help. I had to remove a lot of lines with the text-editor. Elements like: </flow>, </switch>, </foreignObject>, </flowDef> can all be removed from the code. Wereldburger758 (talk) 05:58, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for working on the last mentioned file, it looks good (at least as good as the scheme I was able to draw). And I just looked at the link you recommended, thanks for that. I'll probably test to remove the codes mentioned there, before trying to use Inkscape. As you probably know, I use Adobe Illustrator, unfortunately there is no programm setting to save as plain SVG. Thanks and I'm looking forward to producing valid source codes for the next SVG files. --A doubt (talk) 22:32, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Wereldburger758,

I say it again, please make only one page of it. As I mentioned somewhere else, not just me, I disagree with the most of the content. It seems in patches also to be nonsense. I have no idea how far your SVG knowledge rich (I know you're new to Commons), but I noticed more and more a horrible half-knowledge that you're trying to give to the best as recommendation (it seems your real intention and let us see your signature on this page). Especially to transform everything into paths, is absolute hogwash. This is really only the last (stupid) funds for not otherwise releasable bugs and not to make SVG valid. If you do not amend this, I suggest all the pages for deletion. -- Perhelion (talk) 13:05, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am not new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. This account is my (new) unified login-name. And please, if you address me, make your English as sound as possible. Now I am guessing. Can you please explain a few things:
  • Why do you want it to be just one page?
  • Don't you know that not all files can be made ValidSVG by using scour or by saving them as Optimized SVG? That is why I make a distinction between the files made by different editors.
  • You say that you disagree with most of the content. You name one: transforming everything into paths (I agree with that and I will change that). But the rest? You said "most".
  • Why don't you edit it yourself? This is Wikipedia. Give it a try. You certainly seem committed to it. My method works but if you know a better way then go ahead.

I am looking forward to your reply. Wereldburger758 (talk) 14:27, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@"Why do you want it to be just one page?" Because it is the same issue, it has in most cases the same reasons.
Please give any example for your guidance, I've never seen such invalid issues (that means "most").
  • Text: can never be a reason for invalid SVG alone
  • Group: can never be a reason for invalid SVG alone
  • "into paths": should never be a general solution. You agree on this, so we can remove this.
So at the and there stays only: "Open the file, clean the Defs, save the file as Plain SVG." File fixed. But this is optimizing SVG, what Save as "Optimzed SVG" does automatically.
If you have any example SVG, then I do open a Inkscape Bug report, if not exist. -- Perhelion (talk) 23:46, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your last remark: Optimized SVG does not solve the issue. Let's take an example: File:Condensation_4-Bromoresorcinol.svg This is what I did: I loaded the file on my computer. Started Inkscape and loaded the file. Saved it as Optimized SVG. Then I started my browser and went to the W3C-validator. Validated the file and it returned with a negative reply: not valid. You can repeat the process yourself.
This is the reason why I always use a text-editor first (I use Geany).
This is what I did in my text-editor:

  1. I removed the line:" xmlns:cdml="http://www.freesoftware.fsf.org/bkchem/cdml""
  2. I removed the cdml-files.
  3. Restarted Inkscape and loaded the file. I enlarged the viewport a bit.
  4. Saved it as PlainSVG.
  5. Checked it for validity on the W3C-page and it gave a positive return.
  6. Uploaded the file to Wikimedia Commons.

You can repeat this procedure for all files originally made with bkchem. So, what I would like to stress is that there is no standard procedure for all files. Files are made with different programs and therefore need different procedures. You can put them on one page. No problem. But what needs to be pointed out is that files need a different procedure according to the program they were made with. One last remark: take a look at this page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:SVG#Plain_SVG.2C_compressed_SVG.2C_generic_specifications. A lot of problems are mentioned and discussed here.Wereldburger758 (talk) 09:17, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:BlasonHansRubens01.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 04:25, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your SVG validating

[edit]

Hi, if you change {{Inkscape|err=4}} to {{Inkscape}}{{ValidSVG}} (instead of to {{Inkscape|v}}), you distroy the category diffusion. Please use {{Inkscape}} (and others) always with the parameter "v" (or err=).

I had done a lot of categorizing work, and you undid it all, in a great count of cases. When e.g. in Castellón de la Plana-Mapa de la Plana Alta.svg I inserted {{Inkscape|v|sub=-SpanMunMap|key=Alta|err=2}}, you just need to remove the err=2 after your validation to correct the categorization. Don't you like correct categorizing? Or do you not understand what's on? You can ask me, if there is any question about.

As an example of many, your edit von June 30 at Multiple minimum spanning trees.svg: The correct tag had been/will be {{SVG-edit|v}}. You replaced the tagging by just {{ValidSVG}}, now it is not any more correlated to Valid SVG created with SVG-edit.

See Help:svg#Uploading & categorizing about categorization.

I do not want to repair all the numberous misedits you made in the last months - so please look over your avtivities and correct your faults. Thank you -- sarang사랑 05:48, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Du verstehst ja auch deutsch. -- sarang사랑 09:38, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do have a few remarks and questions. First of all, you have created a new categorization scheme on top of an already existing one, namely {{ValidSVG}} and {{InvalidSVG}} and {{Inkscape}}. This code creates the templates that one can see on the wikimedia pages. These templates are still valid.
This is not the first time you have created new templates. Look at this page: [1]. There are five templates on this page. At least two too many. I by then already had problems with these templates because it took a great deal more effort to place them correctly on the page.
Now you have created a new categorization system and now you are suggesting that I do it all wrong (quote: "misedits").
From now on I am going to abide to the new system. I think it is an improvement. But the old way of doing things is certainly not wrong.
Hat sich etwas geändert in Deutschland? Dutzt man einander viel schneller als früher? Lol. Regards, Wereldburger758 (talk) 09:59, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"The old way of doing things is certainly not wrong" but the "new way" contains some advantages. Valid SVG collects 26000 files, Created with Inkscape 57000. This is much too crowded and not anymore useful. To give a better overview I made some efforts to diffuse files into several subcategories; it can be done very easy with templates. Such a diffusion was SpanMunMap. When your edits undo every diffusion it is not helpful.

In Deutschland ist alles wie gehabt, aber innerhalb der Wikipedia ist generell das "du" üblich. -- sarang사랑 12:40, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, we agree. I will fix the SpanMunMap category.Wereldburger758 (talk) 13:15, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

SpanMunMap had been established to collect many 'invalid' files, and to show on the other side the 'valid' ones. Now we have not any more invalid maps, we can set the whole category Maps of municipalities of Plana Alta in Spanish to a subcategory of Valid SVG created with Inkscape, and have the category former containing the invalid files deleted. Seems the best solution - but needs some categorizing work. Do whatever you like! -- sarang사랑 16:19, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong file

[edit]

Info just in case that you did not see it by yourself: You mixed it up a bit and uploaded Castellón de la Plana-Mapa de la Plana Alta.svg over Torreblanca-Mapa de la Plana Alta.svg. Regards -- sarang사랑 16:31, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Almost perfect

[edit]

Hi, recently you tagged with {{Chemdraw|v|vstyle=float:left|v}} (e.g. Pyridazine 2D numbers.svg). Doing so, it is the same as {{</nowiki>Chemdraw|1=v|vstyle=float:left|2=v}} with the unwanted declaration of User:v as the creator (from the first "v"), because of the second "v" for validity.
Better to let away the 2nd "v", or make it like Pyridazine 2D aromatic full.svg. Regards sarang사랑 08:30, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, understood. Thank you. Regards, Wereldburger758 (talk) 09:03, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your validatings

[edit]

Hi, thank you for healing many files from their invalidity. You seem to be an expert for changing SVG code from W3C-invalid to valid.
As an consideration, I am fearing that it is of not so much help for Wikimedia.
It would be fine if uploaders care for validity before uploading a file; all later uploads of new versions just fills the mass storage — fine if it is an amelioration of the file in question. The mere W3C-(in)validity is not much more than a diffusion criteria to distress overloaded main categories; but it is not such an essential quality characteristic. If an image displays well, its main purpose is fulfilled. New uploads without altering its appearance may have different reasons, e.g. to show better (or at least, other) possibilities to design the SVG code (as in Created with Inkscape-hand or SVG Simplified). Merely changing some parts of SVG code that is complaint by the W3C validator may have also an educational value, but doing so for hundreds of files can be considered whether it helps anybody.
I want to suggest that you think it over. There is a lot to do for experienced users with good ideas! For my part, I try to introduce better categorizing as good as I am able to. You know that I had created or expanded many templates for this reason; sorry if it is difficult to use all the new options — at least there are shorthand expressions to make editing easy. Thank you -- sarang사랑 07:30, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have already thought this over. I want to make youtube-tutorials on the validation of SVG-files and close that chapter. I will return to my passion: mapmaking. If you are interested, there are some new developments: Wikimaps Atlas. But you mention that Wikimedia has a need for experienced user with good ideas. Did you have some good projects on mind? Help: Illustrator

[edit]

Hi there. I saw you started a page over a year ago called Help:SVG/basic1 in which you describe the process of turning invalid Adobe Illustrator SVG images into ones which will pass the W3C validator. It also seems you abandoned the project not long after starting it. I am here to proposition you: I think that Commons needs a page called "Help: Illustrator", something analogous to the existing Help: Inkscape page, which will cover in as much detail as necessary the process of producing valid SVG images using Illustrator that are of the best appearance/ quality/ size/ etc. I have written a number of articles on the English Wikipedia, but have never created a help page here on Commons before. I am interested in finding collaborator(s).

I have learned about how to work with Illustrator the hard way: by trial and error, with no instruction other than web tutorials. It was excruciating, and embarrassing for me (my very first "SVG" file— I opened up Illustrator, imported my JPG image, and "Saved" it as an "SVG"... And I honestly thought that was all I had to do). I wish some resource had existed to help me out so that I didn't stumble so much, and I would like to consider putting together such a resource here on Commons. However, as I stated, I have no formal training, and am concerned about giving poor or misdirected advice on a "help" page (which then would not be very helpful, would it?).

Anyhow. What do you think? Are you interested? What is your background? Also: see my user page for some examples of my work (which has improved a great deal since that debacle I mentioned in the previous paragraph!) KDS4444 (talk) 08:20, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Two weeks, no response. I am taking that as a "not interested". I hope you do not mind if I co-opt some of your text from the above mentioned page for a new page on Illustrator. I would prefer your active collaboration, of course, but I will take whatever I can get, including unfinished pages. Thanks anyway! KDS4444 (talk) 09:19, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your SVG tagging

[edit]

Hi again! I can imagine that you are aready bored from all the new templates & crap on Wikimedia. Nevertheless I am hoping that you want to do things properly, so I ask you to use also the SVG description templates we have now in use more than one year. When you look e.g. at Bayern Munich vs Schalke 04 2007-07-28.svg you can see that I used the template {{Image generation}} which is at the first view a bit complicated, but can make things very easy. The mentioned file is made with Inkscape, describes more or less a diagram and contains embedded text. problem with map

[edit]

Hi, I'm not sure if your version of File:Israel - Location Map (2012) - ISR - UNOCHA.svg is the current version. Anyway, at some resolutions the letters of "Tel Aviv-Yafo" overlap each other. This was pointed out by someone at en.wikipedia and it happens for me too. Maybe a font problem? Thanks. Zero0000 (talk) 06:04, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. What is the background map you used to create this map? The description mentions File:BlankMap-World gray.svg but it seems to be wrong since that map differs and has no rivers. --Weaveravel (talk) 17:18, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
