Curves
[edit]Regarding your edit to (ABZ2+4g
), BSicon/Icon geometry and SVG code neatness says to use both M 0,0 73,73 A 604 604 0 0 1 250,500
(circular) and immediately below that M 0,0 L 36,36 C 125,125 250,250 250,500
(almost circular). Which one of these is correct, and does it matter which one is used? —Jc86035 (talk) Use {{ping|Jc86035}}

M 0,0 L 36,36 C 125,125 250,250 250,500
is the old geometry, and should have been replaced byM 0,0 73,73 A 604 604 0 0 1 250,500
, which greatly simplifies the calculations for formations, parallel lines, etc. Useddenim (talk) 14:43, 2 December 2016 (UTC)- Thanks. Not having checked that page, I always assumed it was just
M 0,0 C 125,125 250,250 250,500

SVG coding and librsvg
[edit]Hi, in future SVG uploads could you use only commas and not spaces in stroke-dasharray
(utdLSTR+4
) and use a separate <g>
tag for the mask attribute if mixing masks and dasharray (uextSTR2+4h
)? librsvg currently doesn't render these properly. Thanks, Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Elevated 3 curves
[edit]I'm currently working on uploading a full (31/32-colour) set of 3-curves and junctions, as I did for most of the k curves and junctions. For the newer elevated formations which you uploaded:
- The formations probably shouldn't have the
l
prefix, since they wouldn't have a line within the icon boundary without the prefix. See (hvSTRe+R
). - For formation icons such as (
lh3STR-Rq
), the name would change depending on whatq
means. If it retains its current definition I'd rename the icon toh3STR+Rq
orhv3STR+Rq
, as mixing the dashes with this would be unwieldy. Ifq
is redefined to apply to the whole icon, then I'd rename the icon tohv3STR+R-q
orhv3STR+Rq
. - I would omit
l
from the corner formation icons.
Did I get this right; would you do something different? Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Three-quarter icons
[edit]Shouldn't (ucdABZ3x2
) match the geometry of (ucdABZg2
)? I think it would be better to replace its uses with ucSTRc2 + ucABZ3x2 + uexcSTRc3 to avoid naming issues. (By the way, your arc geometry seems to be a bit off and doesn't really match the corner icons. I'm not sure if this is a problem, though, since a perfect match would have a very small radius.) 3STRs
[edit]You need to enclose the <ellipse>s inside groups with mask="(#1)" and the stroke-dasharray, otherwise it doesn't render properly in librsvg. Also, for the 3SHI icons, I think it would be better to use names like those of the kkSTR series, i.e. (ut3SHIr
) = ut33STR3
(like (ukkSTR3
)). Jc86035 (talk) 08:18, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Jc86035: Yes,
33STR#
would be an acceptable name, but I can't think of any other geometry that3SHI
could be, so I went with the more descriptive name. In fact, I never liked thekkSTR
naming; maybe we should rename those tokSHI
. Useddenim (talk) 13:18, 9 January 2018 (UTC)- It would be somewhat inconsistent, though, since a SHI(1-4) is over one row and a kSHI would be over two, and shifts don't use corner numbers whereas 3STRs and kSTRs do. Jc86035 (talk) 13:22, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

Noting that {{Vert header}} exists on enwiki and is what I used in {{BSicon catalogue}} (although I just copied the code out of Special:ExpandTemplates). It's probably more versatile and doesn't require the user to add padding as far as I'm aware. The Lua module needs to be imported at the same time, though. Duplicates?
[edit]I noticed you uploaded these icons.
They don't seem to be usable, since the tunnel dashes are facing the wrong way. Were they supposed to be like (tÜWu1

Help, please
[edit]Hi there! I was looking for BS icons that have parallel to single + crossing + corner combined and found this category: Category:BSicon/railway/parallel lines/tunnel/uw/shift/one quarter/crossing/curve. Just a "tunnel" version of what I need. Unfortunately the author doesn't seems to be active here anymore and I have no idea how to adjust them myself... Could you please edit those files to make them solid #be2d2c (or whatever the color of STR is)? Thanks a lot. --Fessor (talk) 06:49, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

BSicon uENDE@Fq
[edit]Hi, your name seems to pop up from time to time in connection with icons, so I thought I would start here. I have just added an extended terminus (uENDE@Fq
), because I needed one for the Wolverhampton Trolleybus RDT. However, I am not sure that I have got the naming right. I think of it as a start terminus, but it might well be an end terminus, so perhaps it should be uENDE@Gq. Any thoughts? Bob1960evens (talk) 11:40, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Help
[edit]I can't figure out what needs to be done to add a file when there is already a redirect. I need to do this because files are BSicons. Could you explain me the steps to take? ZandDev (talk) 12:20, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
- @ZandDev: What file(s) do you want to replace? Useddenim (talk) 13:38, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
- If possible I would like to carry out the operation because I would be interested in understanding how to do it. ZandDev (talk) 13:48, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

- Edit the file, replacing the
#REDIRECT[[]]

) - There won't be an image, but it will say No file by this name exists, but you can upload it. If a file used to exist, try to purge this page's cache at the top of the page.
- Upload the new file. (This action will, however, delete the {{Information}} template.)
- Edit the file again, this time adding the Description/Source/Date/Author/Permission information.
- Useddenim (talk) 01:41, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, you were so clear. ZandDev (talk) 15:09, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- The steps of this trick are so clear that it might be a good idea to put them in the wikiguide (maybe a hint here) for those who might find themselves in the same situation. What do you think about it? ZandDev (talk) 15:27, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

Geometry standardized
[edit]Hello Useddenim, you have changed the symbol File:BSicon exTUNNEL.svg that I uploaded with the note "standardised", whereupon it now corresponds exactly to the form of the symbol File:BSicon exTUNNEL2.svg. This is not what I intended when I created the symbol and uploaded it. Lantus (talk) 05:23, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
- Looking at de:Transcevenole, I can't see any reason for creating an icon that is merely an existing one with an element moved 20 pixels from the standard, agreed-upon position. The image shows this, with your version on the left half and the standard to the right. And when reduced to the normal 20×20px display size, this change is only 0.8px, and therefore displays barely differently. Useddenim (talk) 16:34, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, I see. That is obviously an error. I will improve and then reset the whole symbol set. Thanks for you info. Lantus (talk) 09:19, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
|
- @Lantus: I don't understand why you think we need yet another crossing-under icon. There are already four:
- plus the stand-alone
PORTALS
that can be placed adjacent to (tSTR
). Useddenim (talk) 14:50, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
- No, Useddenim neither (
STRu
) nor (SBRÜCKE
) are tunnels. As their name indicates, they are bridges and that means a very different purpose. We should not mix up the appearance of the symbols and the meaning of the real structures. Lantus (talk) 19:35, 4 August 2022 (UTC)- Perhaps something got lost in translation, but I never said that they were all tunnels, merely that they show a line passing under something, be it ground, a structure, or something else. And icons have long been used to depict things other than their designers' original intent, so there is no need to follow their putative name. Useddenim (talk) 23:06, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- No, Useddenim neither (
Category renaming
[edit]Hello Useddenim, when you want to rename categories I created, please discuss this first, preferable at Commons:Categories for discussion. Do not rename any without. When proposing to rename, please ensure your proposal meets Commons:Categories. Thanks. Enhancing999 (talk) 12:03, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Enhancing999: When creating categories for BSicons, please follow the existing taxonomy and structure. Do not create any without checking. When proposing to create, please ensure your names meet these requirements. Useddenim (talk) 14:52, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- I don't propose to create any subcategories for the BSicons tree. Please ensure all your categories meet Commons:Categories and project pages are not places in gallery namespace. Do not move categories created elsewhere in ways that don't meet Commons:Categories. Enhancing999 (talk) 14:56, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

It is rarely necessary to create a new category ... Before doing so, make sure you are familiar with the existing category structure, and with the customs and policies of the Commons. Please see if there exists a category scheme or a commons project for your topic, and follow the conventions described there. (emphasis added) |

You, on the other hand, did not create a correct category. Useddenim (talk) 15:35, 15 September 2022 (UTC)- The question is if you performed a controversial move or not. Given that you started reverted my edits after the request here to discuss categories moves first, you clearly don't do that. If you wish to discuss the category I created, please do so in the proper forum. Enhancing999 (talk) 15:47, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- Actually, you should be glad that I merely renamed your categories and preserved the icons in them rather than nominating them for deletion, as they serve no discernable purpose and do not fit within the existing scheme. Useddenim (talk) 15:50, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Your logic
[edit]Before issuing a deletion request in response to the work of others, you should get your logic straight. You clearly miss a lot of anticipation, documented by and in your offending post. I don't oppose suggestion or discussion for better naming, but your claim exaggerated to the point that these icons are 'useless' is the thing that's useless. To help out your imagination:
- a line in tunnel within an elevated structure
- there are house bridges or covered bridges
- a tunnel may end/start on a steep mountain side, crossing an open valley, and re/enter or not another tunnel to the other side of that valley (and it may cross the valley within that covered bridge, hence an elevated tunnel; a 'tunnel' track is not reserved to reside within mountain or earth's ground, solely; it may very well be man-made)
- there are large caves or mining rooms underground; it is possible that industrial tracks cross each other, elevated, underground, while a river or stream runs across all of that on earth's surface - why not?; there are systems with lots of levels underground, natural, man-made, current and historic, a track running elevated within such a structure is neither illogical nor impossible
- as an already realized example, there is en:Line 4 Sheppard, a subway line of the Toronto subway system, thats crossing Don River in a fully enclosed bridge, east of Leslie station (not claiming it is the only example to be found, but one to be found right away, where the icons you question make sense..) — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.135.114.209 (talk) 21:27, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- a tunnel line and a surface line in the same spot
- this is a naive point of view, not recognizing that icons are stitched to other icons in practice: turn (
mABZgt2
) by 180° and copy/stitch the result to the top edge - you may very well recognize, that this will lead to a route diagram that's not only very possible, but existing in lots of places
- water feature mis-aligned
- while it may be true that you rarely find a railway Ford (crossing), where railway tracks run through shallow water of a stream or river, it's not impossible (for example, the flooding could be seasonal only and the tracks be used risk-less in dry times); also BSicon are used multi-purpose in wikimedia projects, saying that these icons are applied not always in context of a railway route diagram (this is the main use case, but it's not limited to that, in theory not so and in practice neither), and in other modes of transportation (paths, road tracks) fords before a tunnel entrance or a bridge starting may very well exist (and even if you do not find an example right away does not mean they are impossible to find (or create) on the globe..)

- btw, you did not even care that some of these icons are in use --Cmuelle8 (talk) 20:33, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- why didn't you cite (
uthKRZW
), but (uexthKRZW
)? is the former part of an exclusive club for a reason unknown, while the later, derived by logic off the former, isn't? seems illogical to me. --93.201.160.130 21:18, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi Denim, thank you for uploading good BSicons. You do not use the script for validation, you insert the "Igen" by hand. May be you did not notice that in the last time often an error occurs: the "other fields" is placed outside the information box. I made the correction on many of your BSicons. Please check your method for inserting the validation! Sarangbot (talk) 05:39, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
Upside down (done)
[edit]I wanted to use this icon in de:Bergwerksbahn Oviedo–Villapérez, but I could not, because I could not find a similar icon that is upside down. I would be delighted if you could create this, when you are working on your next batch. There is no urgency. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 16:58, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

- I like your work and haven't seen this before. I have added it to the discussion page of the German article with minor modifications. To be honest: I think it is a bit too complicated for the German Wikipedia, but would be very good for the English version. Tonight I am too tired to translate it, but if I translate the article to English, I will certainly use your diagramm. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 20:50, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Finetuning required, please: By now, I have translated the article to en:Mining railway Oviedo-Villapérez. However, the track diagram doesn't display as well as on the German Wikipeda. The heights above sea level are not displayed, and some of the stations have been shifted from one column to the other. Could you have a quick look at it please? If the heights above sea level are difficult to display, we could simplify the chart by removing them. They are not that important from my point of view. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 06:36, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

- @NearEMPTiness: I have fixed the diagram and tweaked the article slightly. The problem with the de→en conversion is the behaviour of the {{BS2-2}} template: the same input produces two different results on the different wikis. (This is one of the reasons that {{BS-map}} is finally being deprecated in favour of {{Routemap}} in wp:en). Useddenim (talk) 16:42, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

BSicon HSTeBHF.svg (HSTeBHF

[edit]Hello, I created the icons (eHSTeBHF
), (xHSTeBHF
), (exHSTeBHF
) with the HST diameter size (lHST
), inside the *HSTeBHF icons, equal to the diameter of the (HST
) file.
Your (HSTeBHF
) file has less HST diameter than the original (HST
) file.
If it's wrong, I can pass you the correct file (with the same HST diameter). If it's good (to see more white ring), is not better to reduce the eBHF pink ring (incrementing the eBHF inner diameter) instead of reducing the HST diameter? I want to conform all the icons.
Thank you and bye Etvcom (talk) 04:34, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Etvcom: The white was included to make the colour separation more visible; however, you may be correct in your observation about the inner disk size. Useddenim (talk) 19:13, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I supposed it was to make the color separation more visible.
- So I have ready the new (
HSTeBHF
) file with the same HST diameter and the eBHF pink ring reduced to the same quantity as the white ring in your original file (20 px). Let me know if it's good or if you want to do better. - I can't overwrite your file because I have no permission, but I think I can overwrite my self-updated files ( (
eHSTeBHF

Could you please explain…
[edit]Could you please explain why you moved File:The Hotel Mossop (1919).jpg from Category:Peter Witt streetcars of the Toronto Transit Commission to Category:Trams in Toronto?
Were you disputing it was a Peter Witt streetcar?
- Those are most definitely NOT Peter Witt streetcars. The photo is dated 1919, and the Witt cars were delivered 1921–1923. (And it only took 7 years 3½ months for you to notice the change?) Useddenim (talk) 23:47, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Do you have a problem with Category:Peter Witt streetcars of the Toronto Transit Commission? Geo Swan (talk) 23:36, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- What I do have a problem with is your (and Skeezix1000's) apparent wholesale dumping of all old Toronto streetcar photos into the category without any sort of apparent care or checking. Useddenim (talk) 00:52, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- Even though you split my comment into two parts I am going to respond here, after your comments.
- Okay, if the Witt cars weren't delivered until 1921, then I made a mistake in categorizing the vehicle in this 1919 photo as a Peter Witt. Good catch. Congratulations.
- We are all volunteers here. I do my best. I am sure Skeezix1000 is doing his best. If you think I keep making the same mistake, over and over, then please politely tell me. I am sure Skeezix1000 would appreciate the same courtesy. No good faith contributor wants to be making a mistake, over and over again, if some better informed person can leave them a polite heads-up. Geo Swan (talk) 02:25, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- Welp, I've just spent the better part of the last three hours cleaning up Category:PCC trams in Toronto, and you are complaining about one file? Forget it—I'm done. Useddenim (talk) 02:30, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- I draw your attention to Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/02/Category:PCC TTC streetcar 4612. I refrained from explicitly naming you, but I really am concerned that manually moving images from one category, to another, is disruptive, even when a good argument can be made it has a better name. I explained why in the discussion. Short version - one reason your approach is disruptive is that the old established name could have lots of incoming external links, from our readers, that will break if the old category is deleted because it is now empty.
- As I said in the discussion, I believe the best practices are to either use a {{Move}} template, or a discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion, to get your images moved following community agreement. Two advantages there are, (1) a robot does the grunt work or actually moving the images; (2) a redirect is left behind, so our readers don't find their bookmarks broken; ah, and (3) other community members get to add their input as to what the new category should be named.
- Oh, and I was not concerned about one file. All the 4612 images should be restored to the 4612 category. The 4612 category could become another subcategory of the category you suggested. Come on, it is a museum piece, one of the few remaining instances of a class now largely scrapped. It merits its own category. Geo Swan (talk) 03:09, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- I draw your attention to Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#How_and_when_to_move_things_from_one_category_to_a_newly_started_category... [1]
- If you still think it is acceptable to skip consulting other contributors, and to leave once useful categories empty, so they get deleted, please go to the Administrators' noticeboard and say so. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 14:28, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- Y'know, this is looking like nothing more than sour grapes and pettiness because I called you out on your sloppiness with file uploading. And given all the errors that were made with the photos you uploaded, I have some concerns about your categorization skills. Is it really a good idea to create a subcat with only four files in it? (Furthermore, your initial accusations look like projection to me…) Useddenim (talk) 15:38, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Please be more careful
[edit]Please be more careful.
At 20:48, 3 February 2024 you moved an image from Category:PCC TTC streetcar 4612 to Category:TTC class A-15 (4600-4618) streetcars using cat-a-lot.
At 20:55, 3 February 2024, about seven minutes later, I restored Category:PCC TTC streetcar 4612 to the file - without removing the category you added. My edit summary said "see talk".
At 21:00, 3 February 2024 you removed the category I restored, as if I had not left an edit summary that said "see talk".
Two minutes later I finished starting File talk:Old TTC PCC car at the Fort Edmonton Park Streetcar Barns.jpg#explanation.
I think my explanation there was worth paying attention to. If someone's edit summary requests you to "see talk" do you think there would be some value in giving them a reasonable amount of time to leave that talk page explanation before you revert them? Geo Swan (talk) 02:17, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
