Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 19:34, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Flickr2Commons
[edit]I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Elisfkc (talk) 18:13, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
- Ok thanks! I'll do that from now on.--SilverBullitt (talk) 18:22, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
File tagging File:Kat Von D - STU 2011-10-28 47161.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Kat Von D - STU 2011-10-28 47161.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Kat Von D - STU 2011-10-28 47161.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Ville Juurikkalan kuvat
[edit]Hei, olet tallentanut valokuvia Ville Juurikkalan näyttelystä Category:HIM - Right Here in My Eyes.

-kyykaarme (talk) 20:09, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Kelan kuvat
[edit]Tällainen File:Anssi Kela - Sellosali 2015 (11).jpg sinun valokuvaajalta saama suullinen/kirjallinen lupa tallentaa kuvia vapaalla lisenssillä ei ole riittävä, vaan jos kuvat eivät ole sinun ottamiasi eikä niiden lisenssi ole nähtävillä netissä ennen tallentamista, niin lupa pitää lähettää OTRS-järjestelmän kautta, jotta lisenssit ja Commonsin käytännöt tuntevat käyttäjät voivat arvioida onko lupa luotettava. Luulisitko että valokuvaaja pystyy lähettämään luvan sinne? -kyykaarme (talk) 22:52, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
-kyykaarme (talk) 19:58, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Deleted content
[edit]
- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.Yours sincerely, - FitIndia Talk ✉ 06:17, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
The changes you made recently to my photos of Steve Perry end up looking good, but I see no reason to think they represent reality: you seem to have made an arbitrary choice of skin tone and presumed it to be correct. COM:OVERWRITE is pretty clear on this: when you do this sort of thing, create a derivative version under a separate name. Do not overwrite the original file. This is not an unquestionable improvement.
In general, if you want to overwrite the work of a current active user:
- Probably just don't.
- At the very least, contact them first and make sure they would consider your work an improvement.
Jmabel ! talk 00:15, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- Also, whatever you did here, you completely failed to give an edit summary describing it. "Color fix" is entirely subjective. What did you actually do? Is there a reason to believe it represents reality, rather than just being aesthetically pleasing? - Jmabel ! talk 00:17, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with C2 if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or C1 if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Dragonforce - Milan 2024. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion).
