Aleppo map battles
[edit]Just wanted to thank you for your amazing work with those Aleppo maps. I used them for illustrating the battle in Catalan Wikipedia. Cheers! --Lluis tgn (talk) 01:00, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Raqqa campaign map
[edit]Hello Rr016,
First thanks for the good pushes you are doing. It's very cool. I'am keeping track of your edits and it's quite nice.
I saw few minor changes I lightly disagree with (deleting arrows of major ISIS counter-offensives and SDF setbacks, darkening the map on ISIS side) but nothing big.
Please take note that I tried as much as possible to keep the code well organized, objects of same nature should be in relevant layers / groups, with readable id names.
When uploading to commons, please start your comment by the date {MM/DD} of the data you added to the map. By example, If I updated the frontline as of March 12 control-lines but uploaded on March 15, I would comment 03/12: SDF takes x, y, z ; add few arrows ; redo legend ; edits groups "villages", something like that.
Again, while I point to few things to get some further continuity, I'am fully aware of the positive work you do on this map. so thanks a lot :) --Yug (talk) 14:51, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments! I'm not much of a "coder" so I'm unsure of what code you're mentioning. About the layers: when I download the map (save image as...) and open it with Inkscape, there are no layers showing up. So I decided not to create any new layers and just made my edits on the map as a whole. Sorry for my irking changes, and will understand what comments to write on future updates. Thanks for your help! :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rr016 (talk • contribs) 17:38, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello. I mean groups. Villages dots are grouped into a SVG group called "villages" (if I remember well) when you inspect with the XML tool.
- What is your level at inkscape, do you understand what I'am talking about or do you need more details from me ? (I need to know your approximate level for custom advices :D ) --Yug (talk) 10:39, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, you're talking about the layers function like the image I posted here (from gimp)? I always use this function for all my maps except for the Raqqa Offensive that I've recently made edits on. As I said earlier, when I downloaded the map there were no layers in the layer/group window and I didn't know how to find them. XML tool? Now what is that? Also I'm now learning how to sign my name on these comments! :P --Rr016 (talk) 11:22, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Rr016, sorry to announce you that but I will let you handle that map for some time if you wish to. You are doing a great job and I've been on it for over 6 months, I would like to take a break away from it. My apologize... Black square bug
[edit]I noticed some of your SVGs display the black square bug on commons[1]. There is a solution[2] :D
- [1]: this archive
- [2]: this fixed file
- Problème
- Once uploaded on commons, black square appears. See this archive.
- Cause 1
- The element
<flowRoot...></flowRoot>
is not supported. It was proposed in a svg 1.2 draft documentation, but never became standard. Inkscape use it (but it's not valid).
- How it happen
- When you create a text-box by clicking and dragging the text tool in inkscape, you create a flowroot box.
- Solution (recommanded)
- 1. Open svg file in text editor
- 2. Use the following regex :
<flowRoot(.*\n)*?.*<\/flowRoot>
|
- 3. Delete all matches.
--Yug (talk) 15:37, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
- Ok done. I fixed the 3 svg maps, and edited the relevant wikipedia articles to switch the the now-valid svg version. --Yug (talk) 16:59, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
- THANK YOU SO MUCH, YUG! I'm just an amateur at graphic design so I don't really know how things work yet. :P --Rr016 (talk) 17:44, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
Central Syria map is missing something
[edit]Hi there. I noticed that you said that the Central Syria campaign map was finished, but you forgot to add the Syrian Army's recapture of Al-Qaryatayn to the map. Can you please make this addition? The fall of the city to ISIL and its subsequent recapture is pretty significant to the overall campaign itself. LightandDark2000 (talk) 07:07, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Hey there,
Can you add text area for the map so we can translate it to other languages with Inkspace? --Hedda Gabler (talk) 13:38, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "add text area"? Unlock the text layer in Inkscape? I've unlocked the text, lines, arrows, and colour layers in the newest update of the map. I hope you'll be able to edit it now. --Rr016 (talk) 19:31, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

Hy the annections of the turkish army now in the region Afrin and north of Manbidsch should be marked in a different colour and not in green colour. Green colour have the rebels in region Idlib. There should be an own colour for that parts of northern Syria, where now the turkish army occupies land of Syria. --92.76.120.42 18:23, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
- At the moment I don't think adding another colour is necessary. --Rr016 (talk) 21:49, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- That's wrong, Rr016. The rebels in Region Idlib, which are marked in green, are not the same people like the turkish intervention north of Manbidsch and now beginning in region Afrin: THERE is the turkish military, which operates north of Manbidsch and now beginning in region Afrin. You have to take a different colour for the parts in northern Syria, where now the turkish military started an attack on syrian ground. --178.11.3.97 14:41, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
Hello.
The town center of Afrin was taken by TFSA troops today on 18 March at around 08:30 local time (what happened to YPG held territory to the northwest and southeast of Afrin is still vague as of today).

and also can you add them to your strategic syrian map in 2013.AlAboud83 (talk) 17:10, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Well it's nice to know someone is looking at my strategic maps ;) , but I'm not adding anything below the Qalamouns for 2 reasons: 1) the map is already very big and increasing the size might not allow me to upload it here, and 2) MrPenguin20 didn't include the topography for Damascus, Qunietra, or Daraa governorate maps so it looks very weird when combined together. You can see what I'm talking about on my "Kusham Clashes" map. Also what Damascus 2013 map are you talking about, which wikipage(s) is it found on? Thanks, --Rr016 (talk) 19:21, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- here is the link by it another of Mr Penguin 20's maps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rif_Dimashq_Governorate_campaign ,all the maps are missing some information, the FSA rebels had a direct supplyline from Al-Otaybah and directly towards the Jordanian Border in Rif Dimashq Governorate and Al-Suwaydaa Governorate, also, the white area surrounding Damascus was either under Government or rebel control,as how Archicivilians map shows,Al-Otaybah was captured by rebels in Auguust 2012,also by late 2012 Damascus International Airbase was surrounded from three directions by rebels with a narrow road linking it with Damascus city.AlAboud83 (talk) 22:58, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Missing Info on Al-Qusayr Battle
[edit]the villages and parameter of the villages of Fitaya,Umm Al-Dawal,Hadida and Al-Dayyabiyah were under FSA control and were connected with Talkalakh and Al-Zara and Al-Hosn pocket and the source is Cedric Labrousse http://i40.tinypic.com/23476w.jpg. - ask Cedric Labrousse,he knows about it.I remember that one of his maps showed it.also there was fighting in Al-Qaryatayn and Al-Furqlus and FSA was on the doors of Palmrya, also the aqayribat countryside was under FSA control, this map shows it.https://yallasouriya.wordpress.com/2013/06/26/mark-%E2%80%8Fmarkito0171-15m-syria-military-map-of-homs/.AlAboud83 (talk) 22:42, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

- Ask Cedric Labrousse about it,the rebels controlled most of Deir Ez Zor,since capturing the T-2 Pumping station in Feb 2013,the road that Government Forces used was up the Palmyra to Kabajeb, then they used an isolated desert road, from north of Kabajeb to Deir Ez Zor City,Government Forces lost control of Kabajeb and Al-Shoula since late 2012,i remember Cedric Labrousse, posting a map about deir ez zor,but for Al-Qaryatayn and and Al-Furqlus they were under rebel control since 2013,but lost to government forces in the summer of 2013,Palmyra orchards were also FSA strongholds, for East Hama villages, the villages were under rebel ever since 2012,government forces recaptured these villages in March/April of 2013,but the FSA forces recaptured the east hama villages in the battle of coming for Homs in September 2013,and Cedric Labrousse knows about it,for Rusafah and Tabqa Airbase and the Athria road, during the rebel capture of Raqqa City, the rebels pushed government forces to the athria road, and captured the entire Masakanah and Tabqa road since late 2012,and all news networks report in 2013,that all Raqqa Province was under Rebel control, with exception of 3 Government garrisons,Tabqa Airbase, and a 4 villages around it were under Government control,Brigade 93 and Division 17.AlAboud83 (talk) 16:18, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
- for Kafr Nan,i agree with you.AlAboud83 (talk) 16:25, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
- I don't want to continue pestering Mr. Labrousse with questions about 2012/13 maps of Syria; he seems busy archiving and researching. Though, I would love to see his earlier maps of Deir ezZor, east Hama, and Raqqa but I can't seem to find much since I began monitoring the conflict too late (summer 2016). Would you by chance know where to find these maps? --Rr016 (talk) 15:08, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

how to make a map
[edit]I have a question i am trying to make a map using openstreet, but when i save it as a pdf and open it on inkscape,it shows me the entire world plus the section that i have decided to choose, also when i create nodes(where i want to show a color, coloring the map to show how controls what) and move them over a body of water, for example Assad lake, the color appears on both land and water,so i want to know how to be able to make it appear on land only not water.AlAboud83 (talk) 02:37, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- What do you by the entire world, can you post a picture or download of your map? About the water: I suggest making a separate layer for the water (lakes, rivers, etc.) that is above your colors layer. Select all the water on your map and right click with mouse -> "move to layer" and select your water layer. I suggest to download my recent map to understand visually: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2018_Syrian-Turkish_border_clashes.svg I hope this helps! --Rr016 (talk) 18:22, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

2020 al-Jawf offensive

How do you make your war maps?
[edit]Hello, I was interested in creating some maps in this style: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Operation_Peace_Spring_-_Tell_Abyad.svg also https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Operation_Peace_Spring_-_Ras_Al_Ayn.svg and was wondering if there's a tutorial for the wikipedia style of creating these maps in the "Wikipedia style". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wigger32r (talk • contribs) 18:49, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Well I don't know if my maps are "Wikipedia style" I mostly mimicked MrPenguin20's mapping style. Here are the steps I take to make my maps:
- Using OpenStreetMap (OSM), I locate the area where I want the base map to be (example: Tell Abyad area: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=12/36.6929/38.9500). Then I click the 'Share' button on the right side of the screen (icon has a square with an arrow pointing right); this will pull up some options on how you want to save the map data. There is a 'Set custom dimensions' checkbox, which I frequently use, that can help specify your map boundaries. Once you have your selected map area, select an export format using the 'Format' drop-down box (I typically use SVG) and save the file.
- Open the saved file using Inkscape (or any other vector graphics editor) and you should see your selected map in the editor. The first thing I always do before anything else is save the map data as a layer; this can be done by first creating a new layer in the Layers window by pressing the plus sign (+). Name the layer what you want and then click the 'Add' button; your layer should now be added to the Layers list. To save the map to this newly created layer, select (click) the map data and right click -> Move to Layer ... and select your layer; this might take some time depending on how much detail the map data contains.
- Once you have your map data in a designated layer you can 'lock' it by pressing the lock icon left of the layer name; this way when you are working in other layers and mis-click something, you won't accidentally make changes to the map data. From here I usually make separate layers for the text (city names, special areas), belligerents colours (red, green, yellow, etc.), arrows (with or without a gradient), lines (dashed or not dashed), and even for a legend sometimes (map title, map scale, description, etc.).
- I recommend playing around with Inkscape to get used to its functions and see all that it has to offer. If you want any more details on how to do some things in the editor please do not hesitate to let me know. I hope you enjoy mapping! --Rr016 (talk) 19:53, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Zintan
[edit]On the Libyan Civil War map, Zintan should be GNA-aligned I believe: https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200521-zintan-and-mizda-announce-support-for-libyas-gna-army-forces-move-to-liberate-asbiah-from-haftar-militias/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Docsisbored (talk • contribs) 23:28, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
- My peers have told me that the Zintan area is neutral, under local control, but still support the LNA. So I decided to leave that area red for now. --Rr016 (talk) 17:58, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
Al-Jawf Offensive Updates
[edit]I know I'm a random IP, but first off I would like to thank you for your maps, they are extremely informative.
I don't know how often you make updates to your maps, but I was recently reading the Ma'rib Campaign and saw that the Houthis had captured the Mass military camp from the government. Here is the info directly from the page: [[8]]
On 22 August, Houthi affiliated media said Houthi forces captured the Mas military camp in Northwest Marib, after defeating Hadi government forces and Islah party militias.[1] The Mas military camp was twice unsuccessfully attacked by Houthi fighters on 4 April and 16 July, it is reportedly the main military base of Saudi Arabia-led forces in west Marib and overlooks the Saana Marib highway.[2]
Could you make a change or is it too soon? Thank you in advance. 2601:85:C101:BA30:EB:A5C4:AD1C:4611 03:16, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! and I just now updated the Al-Jawf/Ma'rib operation map. However, there is no definitive confirmation yet about the Mass camp being taken. I will wait a little longer until Hadi sources confirm this or when I'm certain the report is correct. --Rr016 (talk) 17:25, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
Detailed battle map for Mosul
[edit]@Rr016 and Kami888: Hello. Can one of you please create a detailed battle map for the Battle of Mosul, similar to this battle map for the Battle of Raqqa? I'm pretty sure that there's more than enough information out there to create a detailed map showing the advances of the Iraqi forces. BTW, the final ISIL pocket in Mosul's Maydin neighborhood (in the Old City) fell on July 21. LightandDark2000 (talk) 21:21, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Asking for assistance
[edit]Hey! What's up. I admire and appreciate your work on Syrian and Libyan civil war maps. So, I decided to ask for help on the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, particularly the ongoing battle near/in Hadrut. Cheers! Solavirum (talk) 19:43, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Can you make a map for 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war
[edit]Current map is lower quality than yours. It also doesn't show the advances day by day. And does not show areas set to be evacuated by Armenia, neither the Russian peacekeepers. Can you make a map please? LevyHerro (talk) 10:09, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

- Looks great! Way more professional-looking than anything I make. I would love to see you make a second map of the actual war last year. --Rr016 (talk) 21:55, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
Iraqi civil war (2006-2009)
[edit]Hi, I appreciate your works for the 2020 Nagarno Karabakh war, Libyan Civil War, Syrian Civil War and the battles during the conflict in Iraq. Could you make a map for the civil war between 2006 and 2009 which has it’s own article? You could choose any date between these years for the conflict. Thanks!
- Sorry, but I don't know much about this conflict or how the map would look unless you have a source. --Rr016 (talk) 22:18, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
Can I use your map with some modification on Persian/Farsi Wikipedia?
[edit]Thanks for the great maps. I would like to use one of your maps called Battle of Shusha (2020) after changing the titles and city/village names to Perso/Arabic alphabet and change some other attributes of the map such as using the Armenian flag rather than the Artsakh flag as I believe in practice the battle was between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This modified map will be used for the translation of the battle of the Shusha. If allowed this would be my first experience in using a current map and changing it, so would appreciate letting me know the proper way to give the credit and method of uploading. Or should I provide you with the modified file and you upload it after review?
- Of course! Anyone is free to modify my maps. Also, you can upload the new file (just give it a different name). --Rr016 (talk) 20:24, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
Al-Jawf Again
[edit]Hey Rro16, I posted a message here earlier about making an update for the al-Jawf offensive, but unfortunately there were not enough sources to add the Mass military camp to Houthi control at the time. Now, however, there have been more sources about the capture of the base, including this one, which took was slower than other sources to announce the fall of the camp: https://english.iswnews.com/16363/latest-updates-on-marib-front-20-november-2020-map-update/. I know ISWNews isn't exactly the best source, but I'm sure there are other sources that confirm this. Thanks, and keep up the great work! 2601:85:C102:1220:60B3:12B9:9A92:B77D 23:11, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

al-Jawf Offensive picking up speed again
[edit]The Houthis are making big gains in their 2020 al-Jawf offensive (which should honestly be renamed 2020-2021 offensive). They recently captured the Marib Dam and others areas, and appear to be pushing on the Marib city itself. You should make some updates to the map, and probably keep an eye on the unfolding of events, as things seem to be picking up pace. Thank you in advance. :) 2601:85:C101:C9D0:D926:8F60:B332:7913 21:50, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
- I am actually tracking the offensive on my Twitter page: https://twitter.com/rr0162 and will upload a general map to Wikipedia after the battles conclude. --Rr016 (talk) 23:33, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Request - Northern Iraq offensive (June 2014)
[edit]Could you make a map for the Northern Iraq offensive (June 2014)? I feel like such a massive offensive deserves a map of its own. If you need map sources ask me Ridax2020 (talk) 10:13, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- The article exists on wikipedia Ridax2020 (talk) 10:14, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

- It was pretty correct, but the offensive was much bigger in scale. ISIL before the offensive held only fallujah, and then during the offensive it entered from syria and captured giant parts of iraqi territory from the west and north. I highly recommend you to search “iraqi civil war map” on youtube and fast forward to the offensive in june 2014. They reached as far as southern baghdad Ridax2020 (talk) 09:05, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

@Ridax2020: I thought you only wanted the events presented in the article "2014 Northern Iraq Offensive" which only cover the Nineveh, Kirkuk, Saladin, and Diyala Governorates. I can make a map of the full June 2014 ISIS blitzkrieg into Iraq, but I do not know how long this will take. --Rr016 (talk) 20:31, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Maps over Battle of Sedan, 1940
[edit]I am Ulf Larsen, voluntary contributor to Wikipedia since 2004, mostly Wikipedia in Norwegian Bokmål. I am currently translating the article about the Battle of Sedan, 1840, into Norwegian Bokmål and I noticed and used your very good maps! Regarding the maps, two questions.
1. Is it possible to have an svg-versions of the battle of Bulson, this one? Battle of Bulson-Connage (14 May 1940).png - would be good as I then can translate the text in the map into Norwegian Bokmål.
2. Is it possible to have one or several maps regarding the battle of Sedan itself created? Ideally I would like to have one map covering the German panzerforces advance through the Ardennes, one on the starting positions before the crossing of Meuse, and one during/after they have crossed. It does not seem that we have any such map here on Wikimedia Commons, and that is a pity, as this battle was the deciding during the war in the west.
If needed I have several books with maps, that I could copy and mail you, to use as an inspiration. Last, but not least, this is no hurry, so if you don't have time now, look at it next week/month or year - the story of the battle will not go away... :-) Kind regards, Ulflarsen (talk) 18:02, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Ulflarsen: (1) Unfortunately, the maps do not have embedded text (except for the blue/red unit indicators). You can see what I mean with the Battle of Bulson map: https://www.mediafire.com/file/qgznxvs06nlypri/Battle_of_Bulson-Connage_%252814_May_1940%2529.svg/file. I downloaded the map data from OpenStreetMap which does not preserve embedded text. (2) I can make some more maps on the Ardennes crossing and the Meuse river. I am not sure how long it will take me though. --Rr016 (talk) 20:25, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, I see. Anyway, I am very happy for your maps so far, and any maps regarding the main battle of Sedan is much appreciated, whenever you have time for it. Kind regards. Ulflarsen (talk) 20:44, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Ulflarsen: I hope you like these maps; they are SVG files so the text can be translated. Let me know if anything is inaccurate or you need anything else! --Rr016 (talk) 17:09, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
Excellent! Great work. I guess that again the text can not be translated? What I would translate, if possible, is only the units names - like 55th Infantry Division - into Norwegian Bokmål, I would leave the French towns etc as it is. You think that is possible or? Kind regards. Ulflarsen (talk) 17:25, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Ulflarsen: Unit names and black title ("Battle of Sedan...") are able to be translated. The text from OpenStreetMaps (cities, villages, rivers, forests...) can not be easily translated. --Rr016 (talk) 17:35, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- Very good, if you would like to upload the maps yourself I can give you the names in Norwegian Bokmål, if not I can do it myself. I would prefer to give you the names, as I am just a total amateur in this, but that is up to you. Kind regards, Ulflarsen (talk) 17:39, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Ulflarsen: Sure, just list what translations you want. --Rr016 (talk) 20:20, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, will look them over and post the translations here tomorrow. Kind regards, Ulflarsen (talk) 20:22, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Potential Ukraine war map and 2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis map request.
[edit]Hey Rr016, I know this is request is a bit WP:CRYSTAL but considering it usually takes a few days to create these maps from scratch could you make a template map for a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine? It could be also used in 2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis in case the invasion does not take place. Thanks :). 95.8.174.149 19:28, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

- Hi, Rr016, I'd like to suggest something about the Ukraine map. Could you keep the map you have been editing in the past few days at pre 2022 borders and edit the 2022 invasion map instead? The maps are usually slightly different from one another, causing confusion and the 2022 invasion map is getting more views on Wikipedia, so I think your work would be appreciated more there. Thanks. Viewsridge (talk) 19:10, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- I don't really care, I have stopped uploading my edits to Wikipedia as there are too many editors and confusion. Do what you want with the map. However, I will still be posting map updates to my Twitter account: https://twitter.com/rr0162. Rr016 (talk) 23:35, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Hi Rr016, would you have any suggestions on a simple way to add more roads to the map? Thanks. Viewsridge (talk) 12:47, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- I made the roads using the line/stroke creation tool (pen icon in Inkscape). Rr016 (talk) 21:38, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. Viewsridge (talk) 21:49, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi again, I would like to ask something outside of this subject, how can I save OpenTopoMap as .svg? Thanks in advance. Viewsridge (talk) 21:59, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- As seen in this file, for example. Viewsridge (talk) 08:06, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- I have some bad news. There is no way to download OpenTopoMap data from what I have seen. I take computer screenshots of the region of interest, import it into Inkscape, and make edits on top of it. That is also the reason why I can't upload the source SVG file to Wikimedia, because the OpenTopoMap raster graphic is too large for the XML validator (it's not good practice to embed large raster graphics into your SVG file). Therefore I can only upload the PNG version. I can give you a link to download the source file for the 2022 Kyiv Offensive map if you want to poke around with it. Rr016 (talk) 22:30, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- I see, I don't need the 2022 Kyiv Offensive maps source code, but could you tell me how to save the.png in high resolution? For example as in the 2021 Taliban offensive file. Viewsridge (talk) 08:45, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- In Inkscape go to File -> Export PNG Image -> set the width and height. I typically select the "Page" option when exporting images. Rr016 (talk) 22:13, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
-
- Oh sorry, I should've made that question clearer. What I meant to ask was, how can I take screenshots of the maps in high resolution. Viewsridge (talk) 08:03, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
- I take a bunch of screenshots of the area I want, and then stitch the pictures together to form one large image. I mostly use MS Paint for this. Rr016 (talk) 21:18, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
Give me help on en:Module:Russo-Ukrainian War detailed map
[edit]I won't have time to populate the map within short period of time, because I'm very busy for months. I want you to give me help to finish it. Please note that I preferred the color blue for Ukraine, not the yellow one, and maps made by you could be redone sooner. MarioJump83! 14:36, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- While we are on the topic, I am now concerned that Module:Russo-Ukrainian War detailed map might be duplicating an already existing template/module. The reason i say this is because i looked carefully at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Russo-Ukraine_Conflict_(2014-present).svg which seems to have dots for towns that look like the dots that are put on the template/module maps. The SVG file even has similar airport icons and similar town names in blue font to the template/module maps. My question to Rr016 is this: Did you yourself put the town dots on the SVG file directly or did you screen capture an already made template/module that had all the towns (in red and yellow dots) on them? Tradediatalk 19:45, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- There is no pre-existing module for the conflict from what I've seen. The dots (cities), roads, and railways on the map I placed myself. Rr016 (talk) 22:24, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- No, it is not a duplicate of an already existing module/template. Rather, I made it in quick time using already established norms of detailed war maps in English Wikipedia. If there is a existing module/template before, there was a template about Donbass War back in 2016, but it got deleted a few years ago, so it doesn't count. MarioJump83! 00:02, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- Don't have much time either with work taking out a third of my time. Also, I am unfamiliar with working with Wikipedia templates/modules. Rr016 (talk) 22:23, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oh okay, but at least you are familiar with war map images. In regards to that, can you give me the roads map so I can populate the module myself? At least I have a time now before becoming busy again. Also, I managed to get other people populate the template, so don't worry. MarioJump83! 00:48, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Tell Hamis and Tell Brak
[edit]Hi Rr016, per the sources in the w:Battle of Tell Hamis and Tell Brak (December 2013–January 2014), ISIL already made up a significant portion if not the majority of rebel forces in these two towns and the wider region by the time of the battle. The alliance between ISIL and other rebel groups in the Hasakah Governorate only ended on 6 February 2014 (per SOHR), so I think it would be more accurate to mark the region as mixed with both grey and green stripes rather than just green in your File:Northeastern Syria Situation (January 2014).svg map. It's unclear whether this arrangement also applied to al-Hawl, as sources on that town from the time are lacking, but this University College Dublin article, coupled with the concurrent ISIL campaign in Nineveh, strongly implies that ISIL controlled or at least held a majority over the entire border with Iraq all the way to the Euphrates.
Could you please also create a map for that battle specifically, and maybe for the subsequent February 2014 YPG recapture of Tell Brak (and the ISIL recapture of it in June 2014) too? Thanks! Lightspecs (talk) 07:38, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Lightspecs, I did not know there was a Wikipedia article on that subject I will take a look at the information there. As for the "Northeastern Syria Situation (January 2014).svg" map, I made that map on a whim without too much research. Honestly the map is very inaccurate and in need of updates, but I have been focusing on other projects and lack time to commit research.
- As for your map request(s), I can put together a few maps on those offensives but it may take some time. A question for you: would you like the maps to be in a similar style like File:Eastern Al-Hasakah Offensive (2015).svg ? Or something else?
- Also, to verify these are the maps you want?
- - YPG offensive (December 2013 - January 2014)
- - ISIS/rebel counteroffensive (January 2014)
- - YPG offensive (February 2014)
- - ISIS counteroffensive (June 2014)
- Thanks. Rr016 (talk) 22:01, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- December 2013–January 2014 are the same operation and either that style or something like File:Battle of Ras Al-Ayn (2019).svg would work. Up to you to decide which is the most fitting for that offensive. This might be a useful reference for the settlements fought over.
- The Feb and June 2014 offensives can be made into a single map with overlays or as separate maps.
- Thanks a lot for your great work. Lightspecs (talk) 00:50, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry for the long wait, other projects and personal stuff sapped most of my time the last two weeks. I created a map for the December 2013 - January 2014 offensive: File:Tell Hamis Offensive (December 2013 - January 2014).svg. Let me know what you think and I'll start working on the February/June 2014 one based on your feedback.
- Thanks. Rr016 (talk) 21:39, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, looks good. Maybe you can add the dates each village changed hands but that may be unnecessary detail. Lightspecs (talk) 00:50, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- Here are the updated maps based on feedback:
- - File:Tell Hamis Offensive (December 2013 - January 2014).svg
- - File:Tell Brak Offensive (February 2014).svg
- Let me know if anything else needs changing or be updated. Thanks. Rr016 (talk) 21:56, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Annoying Intellectual Property Question from some Academics
[edit]Hi Rafal, thank you so much for your amazing work on generating high quality maps for the public commons. I'm a professor at Carnegie Mellon and my students are publishing a paper on how Internet performance degraded during the invasion of the Ukraine (I'm so proud of them, I think they are among the youngest students to ever publish at the Internet Measurement Conference :-). The paper will be released CC BY-SA so that anyone can read the paper for free and build off of our work. We have been using your map of Ukraine as a reference in the paper to show how regions that were invaded had degraded Internet performance (and how much it degraded). A paper draft is here. Unfortunately our academic organization insists that we have WRITTEN confirmation from you that the map we used is also CC BY-SA before they will allow us to (a) use your image, and (b) put our own BY-SA sticker on the paper. Is there any chance you can sign such a release form? I'm happy to email you, or you can email me Justinesherry (talk) 09:54, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Justine, yes I would love to help and sign some papers but I am not that well informed on the licensing side of things for Wikipedia. Before anything can get done you should be fully aware on how the map was made. There are actually three renditions of the map (that build off of each other) which are:
- 1) File:Ukraine adm location map.svg - created by Wikipedia user @NordNordWest. This was the base map I used for my rendition (#2), unfortunately the licensing for it gets a bit complicated here.
- 2) File:Russo-Ukraine Conflict (2014-2021).svg - created by @Rr016 (Me). This was the map I created prior to the Russian invasion and became the base for the next rendition (#3).
- 3) File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg - created by Wikipedia user @Viewsridge & maintained by *many* editors. This is the map you have embedded in your draft.
- Therefore I am not sure if I'm fully responsible for the map you're using for your publication. Again I'm no expert on licensing and I don't know if you need to include @NordNordWest & @Viewsridge for the release form. (feel free to comment in this thread)
- Thanks. Rr016 (talk) 00:05, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! This is really helpful; I guess if I had looked a little deeper I would have figured this all out myself. I reached out to the powers that be and explained that there is no single author to get a signature from... we'll see what happens next.
- Thank you for your maps! They are wonderful and help people understand the world better :-) Justinesherry (talk) 00:36, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
Syria Fighting Request

Hey Rr016, there's yet another round of rebel infighting in Syria taking place right now, this time in and around Afrin between HTS and SNA. New map request for the article 2021–2023 Armenia–Azerbaijan border crisis
[edit]Hello.
Can you create a map that actually shows Armenian territory that is ocupied for the article en:2021–2023 Armenia–Azerbaijan border crisis (and its other Wikipedia language versions)?
A map that actually shows Armenian territory that is ocupied, should be created and added. It would be useful, because it would show the precise location.
(That article has a map that shows the border battles - for the year 2021 - though many battles took place since then, including this year and this month.)
For instance a map released by Armenia, showing its territories that have been occupied during this border conflict, could be useful:
https://oc-media.org/armenia-releases-map-of-territories-seized-by-azerbaijan-since-2020/

Name of Rostov-on-Don
[edit]Hi Rr016, I saw in two maps that you worked on about the Wagner rebellion that the city Rostov-on-Don is labeled as "Rostov-na-Don".
I think this is a mixture of English and Russian usages, because the Russian name per Rostov-on-Don and OpenStreetMap is Ростов-на-Дону, transliterated Rostov-na-Donu, while the English name is Rostov-on-Don. It should probably be either "...on-Don" or "...na-Donu". Schoen (talk) 07:01, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Fano controlled areas
[edit]I was wondering what your source was for the grey areas of the
map showing Fano control. The post links to MapEthiopia on twitter but they don't distinguish between Amhara militias and the ENDF. Thank you in advance 2601:280:C082:DE30:5155:BECA:951F:AC9C 03:09, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- I mostly based off the information from reports written by Hone Mandefro (https://twitter.com/HoMan99), Robel Alemu (https://twitter.com/TheFitawrari), and a little bit from Amhara News Service (https://twitter.com/Amhara_News). However I have not read much about Amhara recently so the map is very likely outdated. Someone should update it.
- The map still has MapEthiopia listed because that was one of the main sources I used during the War in Tigray (2020-2022). I have not really cleaned up the file's description since. Rr016 (talk) 21:10, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
Could you please update this map with Debre Berhan and Delanta being captured by Fano as reported by Hone Mandefro. Hone also reported heavy fighting Ataye, Mersa, and Kobo. I could contact you whenever there are major developments if you prefer it that way. https://twitter.com/HoMan99/status/1743749875416592558 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Historical Integrity (talk • contribs) 03:39, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
"pod"mapy Bitwy and Bzurą
Napisałem Ten [11] i Ten [12] artykuł opatrując go Twoimi mapkami. Aż się prosi, by przyciąć te dwie mapki do obszaru bojów.

ładne i dają dobry obraz boju)
Kim ja jestem, ze by cię rencenzowac;) - wstawiaj:) Skoczyłem też w ogólnych zarysach [14].
Rr016 (talk) 19:20, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Warszawa: Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej, 1982. ISBN 83-11-06793-7.Jest w niej dosć dużo szkiców. Jeśli tak - musiałbyś "podrzucić mi" swój e-mail; np napisac do mnie COS TU [16] - w zakładce wyslij e mail do tego użytkownika--keriM (talk) 13:54, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- e-mail wysłany Rr016 (talk) 18:03, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
Mapki wyglądają super:). Chętnie je wstawię do Bitwa o Pomorze. Zobacz i TO: moje ostatnie bitewne dzieło [17]. To Bołtuć pomniejszony ciut o prawe skrzydło. Az się prosi, by wydzielic z Twoich mapek prawe strony:) - no moze troche obciąć z dołu. "Bołtuciowe" prawe skrzydło na mapie w zasadzie nie będzie przszkadzało - sąsiedzi
- Musze jednak wnieśc małe zastrzeżenie do mojej "oceny". Ja nie jestem mentalnie zdolny by merytorycznie przeanalizować tyle szczegółów.
- wstawiłem do artykułu z opisem zmian "+ mapa Rr016". Powsadzam i w innych artach--keriM (talk) 21:45, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Wstawiłem Twoje mapki też TU [18]. Zobacz - aż sie prosi by wydzielić z nich wschodnią cześć - moze pod tytułem: Walki Grupy Operacyjnej „Wschód” (GO „Wschód”) - z dopiskiem 1-2-3 września? --keriM (talk) 14:56, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Academic research project on "2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg"
[edit]I am an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and have been a Wikipedia researcher for over a decade. I wanted to inquire if you might be available for an interview for a research project I am doing about the "2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg" file. I'm focused on how this image is produced and governed, how it circulates across articles and projects, and the technical stack of templates and modules that enable this "war mapping". I would like to make sure that my understanding is accurate with an expert like yourself as well as to document your experience and perspectives participating in this unusual collaboration. How is Debre Berhan under FANO Control?
[edit]At least as of 2 weeks ago, it was under government control. https://addisstandard.com/news-amhara-region-breathes-sigh-of-relief-as-major-cities-return-to-routine/ Ian Lautert da Costa (talk) 22:17, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Indeed. I updated the map to better show the Ethiopian insurgencies. Since insurgents attack and temporarily occupy areas, I will not include that in territorial control. Hopefully the "wavy pattern" better distinguishes the insurgency. Rr016 (talk) 18:57, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

URGENT — What is the source for File:2022 Kherson-Mykolaiv Offensive.png
[edit]If/When you see this message, I would appreciate you taking some time to link what the source(s) is for this image which you made. On English Wikipedia, your map has been removed and basically blocked from being used due to a lack of sources being mentioned (see w:Talk:Battle of Kherson#Map for further info on that). I think your map is much more detailed than the one currently being used. However, without some reference, it will not be added. So, could you spend a few minutes and look around to see what source you used when creating the map? WeatherWriter (talk) 04:14, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- That map was made by aggregating a number of different sources together. Here are some that I used.
- Battle of Voznesensk:
- Russians near Vodyano-Loryne:
- Russian airborne assault on Balovne / Battle of Mykolaiv airport:
- Battle of Kulbakino Air Base:
- Russians near Kapustyne, Balovne, and Novomatviyivske:
- Battle of Bashtanka:
- Russians near Pravdyne, Petrivske, Novohryhorivka, Novomykolaivka, Chervone, Hreihove, Mykhailo-Laryne, Inhulka, Khrystoforyvka, Marianivka, Novooleksandrivka, Partizanske, Snihurivka, Kalynivske, Novomoskovsk, Bila Krynytsia
- Russian airborne assault on Kakhovka Hydroelectric dam:
- Ukrainian forces retaking Novovorontsovka, Mala Shesternia, Novohryhorivka, Topolyne, Kniazivka, Krasnivka, Svobodne, Kamianka, Pryhiria, Kochubeivka, Orlove (this implies they were under Russian control prior):
- Geolocations of other events (such as Russian landings inside Mykolaiv and Russian equipment losses near villages they passed through):
