Why did you "revert" File:Europe germanic-languages 2.PNG to previous version ? The file is used in very numerous wikipedias and we have a legend in eo.wp which matches with the "previous" version and not with yours. So after your "revert" our legend is no more actual. I notice that you make desappear scottish and gaelic areas. --Arno Lagrange ✉ 05:34, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- I explained on the item talk page. File:Europe germanic-languages 2.PNG was designed to show the language groups and not individual languages. File:Germanic_Languages.PNG was made to show the actual languages. The new version, while prettier, doesn't know what it wants to show. Bokmal and Nynorsk are different writing systems, which don't correspond with the Scandinavian dialects. Flemish and Dutch are likewise different literary standards for the same language. On the other hand in Scotland, the official language, English is not shown at all, in preference to minority languages. In most of Wales and Highland Scotland, where the majority of the population speaks English natively, English is shown as being a minority, but official language akin to Swedish in Finland.
- As for the Esperanto legend, it is unfortunate that it was added in the brief period (17 days) that the alternative version was up. But in a different file on the Esperanto Wiki here, there is a key that corresponds to the old version. Like I said, the new version was added without consideration for what the original meant to do, and without consideration for four years' history on nearly 2 dozen existing wikis. --Quintucket (talk) 15:35, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- thanx for explanations. --Arno Lagrange ✉ 21:34, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Libyan Uprising.svg
[edit]Just a heads up: with this upload of the Libyan Uprising file, you seem to have cut out half of the "W" in "Wazen". ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 19:45, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Ahh, thanks. I was trying to move it so it didn't cover the border as it had before. Now I expanded the map a few pixels, and it looks like we're good.--Quintucket (talk) 21:43, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Quintucket,
How could someone edit an image please? Cavewiki (talk) 06:42, 29 August 2011 (UTC) |
- Cavewiki: Thanks. :)
- To edit images I use two programs. For bitmap images (png, jpg, and gif), I use the GIMP, and for vector graphics I use Inkscape. They're both free, they work on Linux, Mac, and Windows, and they're both fairly easy to use. Because the English Wikipedia only allows svg and png files, I recommend using PNG files for photographs, scanned images, and small maps, and svg files for larger maps.
- The GIMP is basically like Photoshop, although makes it hard to draw circles (I have a somewhat-awkward workaround where I use the circle-select and the fill bucket).
- Inkscape has a slightly slower learning curve, but if you've edited vector images before, you should figure it out quickly. If you haven't, all you really need to know is that you edit vector images by creating objects--drawing the line, and adjusting borders, colors, and patterns. There's a couple tutorials on the site[1][2] and on YouTube, and of course on Google which can help you with this. I will admit I gave up on Inkscape the first time I used it, but I realized existing SVG images are a lot easier to use.
- If you have any specific questions I recommend trying Google first; I'm not always on and you'll get your answer quicker. But if you can't find the answer, certainly feel free to ask. :)
- Regards, ~Quintucket (talk) 07:47, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Msallata
[edit]Hey, I left you messages here the Tripolitanian front talk page. I never agreed with Msallata being green in the first place because it felt like they were committing IDONTLIKEIT (link won't work here at the commons but oh well). On a side note, could you get rid of that green arrow now submerged in red?--Yalens (talk) 20:43, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
- Done. I'm in Turkey, by the way. I was on the computer more than usually the past two days, because I was hiding from the Sunday and Eid crowds. So I'll be on less. But it seems like the war is winding down anyways. On a side note: I've been hoping Algeria would get hit by the Arab Spring, now I'm really hoping it. --Quintucket (talk) 07:33, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Barnstar
[edit]Thanks for the barnstar, I really appreciate it :). I didn't quite get what you meant regarding the ethnolinguistic maps.--Rafy (talk) 14:56, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- I meant the maps of the Semitic languages, spread of Nestorian Christianity, and Assyrian genocides. They're impressively done (I know how hard it is to edit an half-decent existing map, let alone create a new one, and very informative. As someone who is interested in language and history, I truly thank you for that. And also for the brilliant maps of the Libyan Civil War. --Quintucket (talk) 16:48, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
This Canadian government CBC web site gives a disposition of the NTC forces especially around Sirte. Less useful on Bani Walid since part of it is still in Ghaddafi's control. As I suspected, the NTC forces from Misrata are closer to Sirte than those east of Sirte. Harawa is mentioned. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:46, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Pay attention to licensing
|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:2011 Libyan Civil War.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:53, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

- Oh dear... I do this every year for about a month or so. Time just doesn't seem to flow linearly for me. ;-)
- I should see if I can find someone with a bot to do it. I went through them all once to manually add a category, I don't look forward to doing it again to add a date. But thanks for pointing it out. Believe it or not, I've still got a couple more to upload. --Quintucket (talk) 05:34, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

- I know, and I pointed that out to kwami. I was addressing my comments at the user who changed Colombia initially, and who has been pushing his interpretation of the law all over Commons. I'm sorry; I should have been clearer about that. –Quintucket (talk) 15:03, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
