Back in April, you added over 800 photographs to the redlinked category Category:World Travel and Tourism Council to check - TEMP. It looks like most made it to Category:WTTC Global Summit 2022 which I guess was the proper category for them. Is there a need for the temporary category? Is there something more to check? Should they just be named Category:World Travel and Tourism Council to check or something else? Ricky81682 (talk) 22:52, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board
Dear user group member,
I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.
With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.
That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.
However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:
Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022
We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Query about Category:John Cotton's Notebook
Hey pigsonthewing, why do you keep adding Category:John Cotton's Notebook to Category:New South Wales? It is, I think, fairly clearly a historical document and I don’t think it needs its own second level category from Category:New South Wales. Is there any reason you disagree? - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 19:19, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
- I'm unclear why you say I "keep" doing so,; when I reverted your removal of the category once. I see you subsequently moved it from that category to Category:History of New South Wales, which - while not ideal - is far better than your simple removal, given that the work is solely concerned with subjects sketched in New South Wales. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:19, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
- Apologies, no offence was intended by my wording. I do think the New South Wales category is too broad for most images. Thank you for your subsequent better categorisation. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 16:23, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
- Incidentally, I’m making a major push to get the Category:City of Liverpool, New South Wales photographed. My progress can be tracked via wikishootme. It’s why I stumbled onto the mess that is the New South Wales category. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 16:27, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

File:BT Tower, Birmingham.jpg
Hi, Pigsonthewing. You reverted my edit to File:BT Tower, Birmingham.jpg in which I removed the text "during routine operations". The source of the image doesn't say anything about the photo being taken during routine operations, so could you please explain why you want that text included? Thanks. MIDI (talk) 16:27, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- West Midlands Police open-licensed their images at my request; they asked that such wording be included to clarify that officers were not taking pictures for social media or Wikipedia while responding to emergencies. Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023
Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

Elizabeth Campbell
Hi, I couldn't find a definitive publishing notice on the title page, and also not in the Category:Sicily In the Year 1825 by Elizabeth Campbell. The book doesn't even seem to have ever been printed - so was it really created in the UK, or possibly in Italy? The year is obvious, but I'm in doubt whether this is a Category:1825 books from Italy or Category:1825 books from the United Kingdom. Did Campbell return from Italy in that year to bind the album in England, or did she stay in Europe? --Enyavar (talk) 19:54, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
- Who knows. UK seemed reasonable give her nationality, language used, and the fact that the book ended up in London. But Category:1825 books is available if you prefer. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:10, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
hi
hello can you tell me what I did wrong please, I'm new Bjc8996 (talk) 16:27, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- [moved from my talk page on en:Wikipedia]
- @Bjc8996: Gladly, but please bear in mind this is Not your fault!
- You have been using an app which asks you to "tag" images. But the app then adds what you suggest as tags using a statement called "depicts", which tells people and computers that the image "depicts" the subject of the tag. Obviously, as its name implies, "depicts" should only be used for things seen in the image, and as precisely as possible.
- So, for instance, you added data to the image above, asserting that it depicts "airport", and "Birmingham".
- Clearly, that's a nonsense, and unhelpful to the project. The app misleads people into doing it.
- You can see discussion of this matter here, and in the 2020 discussions I linked to from the comment I posted there earlier today.
- Thank you for your contributions, but I suggest you stop tagging and find another way to help. Or only tag what you can actually see in the image, as precisely as possible (so tag a picture of The Eiffel Tower as "Eiffel Tower" not "tower" and certainly not "Paris" or "France").
- Do ask here if I can help you again, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:00, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Franklin Expedition Daguerreotypes
Delighted to find that that you have uploaded these images. Just a couple of questions:
- is there a reason why the individuals are not named in the descriptions? Only some are identified indirectly as they are entered in name categories, where they exist.
- The EngWP article notes that Daguerreotypes are normally mirror-images, though right-way images were possible. Perhaps that should be mentioned as the Sotheby's catalogue only notes, without explanation, that the ILN engravings are reversed. Asserting that these particular images are reversed might be considered OR (on the evidence of the Franklin portrait, the medals/decorations would have been worn on the left breast).
Davidships (talk) 11:30, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Davidships: I named and categorised those for whom I could determine the identity. If you can identify others, please do so!
- If examination of the clothing etc. indicates the pictures are mirror images, I see no harm in mentioning that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:46, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. The IDs are in the source, so I will add them.
- Regarding reverse imaging, only Franklin himself is obvious to me on account of the medals/decorations; I looked at the uniforms - although, of those that can be ascertained, the majority button with the persons apparent left over right, but there are a few the other way round. As dagerreotypes themselves cannot be manipulated ex-camera, that is curious - but my knowledge of uniforms and sartorial norms of the time is close to zero - there seem to be examples of both in Category:Historical uniforms of the Royal Navy. Novelty beer glass photo
If you happen to still own the novelty glass in this picture and you have the chance, could you possibly take another picture with a regular pint glass for scale? The gag effect of the glass is sort of lost when it's shown by itself with an ambiguous scale. I suppose it's not that important on the scale of things to improve on Wikimedia/pedia but I wanted to make the Breathalyser page a bit better, and the fact that's a UK gag is excellent for adding world perspective. Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you
Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

About Turnersuchus
Hi. You still haven't explained why we need two categories for this animal. —Trilletrollet [ Talk | Contribs ] 23:33, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- And you haven't said why you think we do not. The fact is, File:Turnersuchus model.jpg represents an instance of the species, and so should be categorised as such. This then requires a category at genus level, to link the species' category to that for its class. Furthermore, having one category at species level and another at genus level gives targets for interwiki links for those Wikipedias which have an article at species level, and for those that have an article at genus level. And doubly so for those that have representations at both levels, such as Wikidata and Wikispecies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:36, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

- Good evening. Do I follow the public photographers or not? If I followed the general photographers - yes I agree to the meeting. Paula Fenness (talk) 11:42, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
This work is to be found in the Council Chamber of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Birdcage Walk, London. It was painted by their Senior Assistant Secretary, Reginald Main, from memory as they'd shared an office at the end of his life. I have an interest as I'm the artist's eldest son. Fred had studiously avoided the camera, so at the time it was painted, it was the only picture known. Subsequent examination discovered some photographs with him in the background, but by then the posthumous portrait was well established. IIRC the work was done between 1962-3, but I might be slightly out. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 51.183.175.111 (talk) 13:19, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

Photo edits
Dear Pigsonthewing - why did you crop my image of John Craske? It is especially egregious to do this without asking my permission. I specifically used the photo that was provided to me for this purpose by descendants Trevor Craske. He wanted that image used because he owns the copyright as he took the photo. Now you have cropped it so that it looks like the one owned by Sheringham Museum. Please explain. Thank you, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:CarolynCo CarolynCo (talk) 12:20, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- @CarolynCo: It's not your image. I don't need your permission. The decision on what to include in Wikipedia does not belong to the descendents of the subject. If you wish to argue for retention of the uncropped version of the image on a Wikipedia article, you should do so the talk page of that article. As the image you uploaded is by another person, we need to confirm their permission for its use, per the guidance I have left on your talk page. If this is not received, it will be deleted. Finally, edits like [1] are nonsense. The image as cropped is a 1901 work by an unknown hand, and as such is no longer in copyright. Again, no permission for using the image is needed.
- As to why I made a cropped version of the image: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an art project. It important, on the article about him, to show people what Craske looked like, not what a tatty paper photo mount looks like. Äntligen maj: Wiki Loves Earth 2024!
Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Sweden or other participating countries.)
Alicia Fagerving (WMSE) (talk) 10:58, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

GLAM dashboard reports has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Wikimania 2024?
Hi Andy ... I'm a WMF engineer, been working (mostly) on commons or commons-adjacent stuff for the last good few years, going to wikimania this year and was hoping I might get the chance to chat to some community members in person - for example you. Are you planning on going? CParle (WMF) (talk) 14:41, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- @CParle (WMF): Sadly not this year. Happy to chat by email or Zoom, some time. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:02, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ah that's a pity - I'm going on my holidays for a fortnight after wikimania (to England, though not to Birmingham), I'll give you a shout when I get back and we'll set something up CParle (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
For categorized files on 2024-05-08
According to your contributions, you added the "Category:Women wearing bikinis" category to many files on May 8th, 2024. However, I noticed the over-categorization problem when I categorized files in this category. Please look at these:
- File:Jacklyn Ocean Bikini Fitness Competitor.jpg: Category:Women wearing bikinis and Category:Women wearing green bikinis exist in the same file.
- File:Bottoms Up Expresso (Clovis, California) bikini barista (11).jpg: Category:Women wearing bikinis and Category:Women wearing pink bikinis while smiling and standing exist in the same file.
It is not necessary to add a parent category to files that have been precisely categorized. Please read COM:OVERCAT to understand how the category system works. Thank you.--125.230.86.175 12:34, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
Nursery schools in the United Kingdom
In the UK nursery schools and Child day care centres are pretty much the same thing. These days they are both usually called nurseries - though that is really rather too ambiguous to be used as a category. Would you like to join in the discussion at [2]? Removed photos from category.
Hello. I saw that you removed photos from the "Veliki Modrasovec" category. Can you tell me why? Veliki Modrasovec is a hill and this tree is on that hill. I just want to understand. Thank you.
