What are you talking about?
[edit]Hi can you please properly attribute the source of your images? Own work implies you created those images but most of your uploads are before the 20th century... You cannot claim copyright to them and commons requires you to list both the date of creation as well as the actual source where you retrieved the images. Lastly because of this, the proper license is Public Domain—you can't use Creative Commons for images that aren't yours. It'd be great if you could go back and remedy this on your uploads so users of these images could use them easier and so the information is correct. Opencooper (talk) 08:30, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
- Dear Opencooper,
- About what article are you asking me this question ? Is this about the pictues about Byron ? They are in the public domain.
- If you are talking about the Boghos Nubar Pacha sculpture, you made a mistake : it's not me who download it in Wikmedia commons, but a user call Varmin. And you are right, this sculpture is not in the public domain. I just add the name of the sculptor & the date of the realization, on the demand of the sculptor, who didn't ask to remove this picture. If you think it's better to remove the picture, ask to Varmin. And for information, I will add the sculptor name on the different page using this picture.
- Best regards. --Axagore (talk) 08:01, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Axagore: Oh no I'm not talking about the sculpture. I happened upon your uploads through the Byron image which had a creative commons license and as a source "own work", which confused me. I'm referring to your uploads where you're not using the correct license and source attribution. For example looking through your recent uploads, this is from 1827, this from 1820, this from 1835. If someone wishing to reuse the image looked at the description page, they'd be confused because it says you created it and that it's licensed under a creative commons license even though it's from before 1921. You have to correct the information on uploads like these so it properly reflects that they are in the public domain and not created by you, but rather the source you retrieved the images from. Hope that's clear, I understand that English isn't your first language. Opencooper (talk) 09:38, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
- Ok — I couldn't imagine that it was a problem with these pictures as I upload them 6 years ago. They are in the public domain, indeed, but they could have photographic copyright, that's why I add "own work" — for the photography of these works... I will change the terms of the license as soon as I could (I have no time during the week). And for your information, the public domain in France is before 1945 (70 years after the death of the author). Best regards. --Axagore (talk) 06:41, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Axagore: Well they're being used in articles so it would be best to keep the information up to date for interested reusers. For the photographic copyright you can list a separate copyright for your scanning, see COM:SCAN for more information on that. And sure thing, no rush since no one is disputing the images themselves. And thanks, that is useful information indeed. Happy editing :). Opencooper (talk) 07:19, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

request for notice
[edit]If you dont like my requests I suggest that you delete the photo, please. --Don (talk) 05:33, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
- @WPPilot: It's not about liking or not liking the "request" (I'm not using your pictures anywhere so it doesn't affect me personally). It's about complying with the rules of the Creative Commons license as well as Wikimedia Commons (especially important for Featured Media which are supposed to represent the ideal). I'm also not an admin btw, just an average joe. All you really have to do is change "require" to "request". It's really not a huge difference and you can already see where the image is being used on Wikipedia on the file's page itself. The point of a specific free licenses is to allow reuse in a consistent way; everyone adding specific restrictions on top of that hinders that goal and causes confusion around what freedoms the license actually gives you (which is why the CC license says it has to be renamed if its terms are changed). Opencooper (talk) 05:41, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
I am not wasting time on you, PLEASE DELETE THE PHOTO ASAP. Thank you--Don (talk) 05:43, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
- @WPPilot: Again, I'm not an admin and don't have any power to delete photos. The point of my message wasn't to get your photo deleted but to point out an issue that needs to be addressed (I also won't ping you after this since I'm apparently wasting your time by trying to make you aware of Commons policy). Opencooper (talk) 05:46, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
- So your first edit well contrib was here: 06:00, 9 April 2015, a nice looking "Snake planter, Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect Park.JPG", then it looks like you did touch-up work, that looks like its on pictures that have an expired copy write. On 10:11, 5 April 2018 you seemed to step outside the box and loaded a picture of Connichi2008 GAINAX Akai Takami.JPG what/who ever that is?? Other then those and a few more it would seem most your effort is working on old black and white photos that someone else took, I don't have time to review your edits but before you go teaching others do YOUR homework and see who it is your dealing with. Review the prior edits and remember that your name is no where on anything you have contributed, not once. Come out of your shell and as I do, include your name on your contributions.
- My first contributions speaking of them was 04:19, 15 September 2009 a exclusive photo of Edo Castle home to the Emperor of Japan. In Japan no "mortal being" is normally allowed in but this was my first contribution here and have contributed over 4000 high quality images.
I took every last one of them.
- I can make whatever request I like and additional conditions to them as I see fit. "Creative Commons licenses are drafted to be enforceable around the world, and have been enforced in court in various jurisdictions. To CC's knowledge, the licenses have never been held unenforceable or invalid. ... They primarily seem to show that CC licenses are limited and still permit copyright claims to proceed. If I chose to modify one, to allow its use under that particular license that is my own choice. Some users also restrict use on Facebook, something that has thousands of my photos, from Wiki all over it and it has NEVER given me credit.
- I really only have 2 others users here I would call friends. Both are admins. My picture was on the front of EN last week, and right here on this site now, TODAY, so you want to come teach me the rules, check to see what I may have done before.
- When you own something you can make the rules.
- Forgive me if a little gruff, one of my oldest friends passed last week, another could pass at any moment and a family member was missing, after 10 years and over 4000 artistic professional donations in the way of photos that I took, you can trust me when I tell you dont need your education. But for shits and giggles: Gracias, ขอขอบคุณ, Takk skal du ha, Arigatōgozaimashita & daedanhi gamsahabnida (대단히 감사합니다), you get a thank you from me in every language I speak.
- Life is short, live it large and don't sweat the small stuff. I hardly contribute here anymore as it has as many people with opinions and many people that are simply broken bitter and trying to find something to do. All too often I become targets for others so it is no longer "pleasurable" for me I am afraid to contribute here much. I dislike all confrontation and simply try to show people through my photos places that most never get to see.
Have a nice day, week, month and year! --Don (talk) 07:37, 29 April 2018 (UTC) [
- I don't see how my photography experience here is relevant at all as I haven't commented on the quality of your photograph, but rather licensing issues with direct links to Creative Commons' stance as well as Commons policy. A CC license does not circumvent copyright, rather its utility relies on copyright itself in order to allow certain freedoms. Your modification of the CC license is certainly your choice, but it's a choice that is incompatible with both the CC license and Commons. That's not really something negotiable or that you can chalk up to "my picture, my copyright". The restriction of using images on Facebook is actually due to Creative Commons being incompatible with Facebook, not an additional restriction on Facebook. See: Meta:Legal/CC BY-SA on Facebook.
- The one seeking confrontation here is you, as I already told you how a simple change in wording from "requires" to "requests" is all it takes; you're the one being aggressive and stubborn when I pointed out Commons policy to you. I reached out to you in good faith after I saw the featured picture, I don't have any criticism of your work nor do I know who you are, as that doesn't have any bearing on the issue at hand. All I care is that a Featured Picture as an exemplar should actually adhere to Commons policy, especially since the community has deemed it some of its finest work. Lastly, that is a nice video, very relaxing camerawork. Opencooper (talk) 08:55, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Then request its removal and thank you for your comment on my video... --Don (talk) 18:17, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Its nice that you upload clearer images (and overwrite the previous versions) but is it possible that this particular image loses a great deal by your conversion to black and white? Perhaps next time you might consider uploading such a major change as a new file. Now, mind if I revert? Eddaido (talk) 09:14, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Eddaido: I don't understand what detail could have been lost by conversion to black and white. Newspapers in the past were always printed in black and white. There's no color information present that would have differed in the color channels. The sepia tone you're noticing was not in the original negative from Underwood & Underwood, but is a result of the paper aging. You're welcome to revert it, though I don't see why. careful
[edit]Before you add a bunch of images to a category, make sure the category exists. DS (talk) 22:12, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
- @DragonflySixtyseven: Is adding uncreated categories not allowed? My intent in doing so was to group together common images, but without going though all the effort of creating a new category (which requires looking though multiple category trees and trying to find the corresponding Commons category names). My hope is firstly, to show that such a category could exist (similar to redlinks on Wikipedia), and secondly to pre-populate the category to make it easier for any future creators of the category (many images won't mention the specific cat in their descriptions so woulnd't be found with a search). If there's a Commons policy against red categories I'll stop, but otherwise I see it as a net positive with little harm done. I know I should go the extra length and actually create the category pages, and I have for many, but sometimes I'm just not up for it. Opencooper (talk) 01:24, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not sure there's a policy against it, but red category links look sloppy, as they often (but not always) indicate simple misspellings. DS (talk) 14:19, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference
[edit]Hello Opencooper
We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !
This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.
We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.
If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).
