Hello, Onceinawhile!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Palestinian Citizenship 1925

[edit]

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Palestinian_Citizenship_Order_1925.jpg at the top of the document Palestinian Citizenship 1925 Does it really matter that the remainder of the document is in Hebrew when referencing this image to show Palestinian Citizenship was a reality in 1925 and presumably until May 14th 1948? ... Talknic (talk) 06:35, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1920 Syrian mandate flag

[edit]

This flag is obscure (it was used at best for a few months, and solid information on it is hard to come by), but I don't think it really falls into the fictional flag category. In any case, it's not nearly as fictional as the stupid "mandate civil ensigns" that User:Gryffindor seemingly created out of pure nothing one bored rainy day, but which for some reason apparently cannot be deleted... AnonMoos (talk) 20:39, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What are the green lines? Are they supposed to be late Ottoman Vilayet and Sandjak boundaries? If so, then there are discrepancies from other maps I've seen. If they're supposed to be something else, then that something else should be explained on the image description page and/or the article in which the image is used (en:Definitions of Palestine), which is not the case now... 2013 map

[edit]

hello Once, i've noticed you were working on File:Palestinian National Authority within Israel, 2013.svg. However i must note that since late December 2012 and especially since January 2013, the PNA was completely transformed into the State of Palestine. I would hence like to ask you to modify the image into "State of Palestine, 2013" title (or something of that sort.Greyshark09 (talk) 19:22, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Greyshark, i'd be happy to help but i don't think i can - i believe image title changes need admin help (at least i know i had help last time i changed one). Oncenawhile (talk) 10:17, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have uploaded a PNG image file which is extracted from your File:Mandate for Palestine (legal instrument).svg, because such historical document should not be converted to vector graphic and hence should not be an SVG image. I also notified User:AnonMoos about my recent upload and asking how to replace your SVG image by my PNG image. --Quest for Truth (talk) 05:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Onceinawhile,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks for uploading File:Mahmoud Abbas describes the Trump Peace Plan as "Swiss Cheese".jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Lands acquired by Rutenberg company

[edit]

See File:Lands_Acquired_in_the_Vicinity_of_the_Jordan_Works_in_Palestine_and_Transjordania,_from_the_Palestine_Electric_Company_Archives.jpg

Hi. I'm sure the map was drawn in two colours. As it is now, all we have is a big confusion. The lands around Moshavat Kinneret had been settled since 1908, Menahamiya already since 1901, Gesher apparently was built on land bought by Baron de Rothschild (d. 1934), so not by Rutenberg and probably long before his time. The original legend clearly distinguishes between the two categories, but the distinction is lost w/o the colour. Now all dark areas appear alike. As it is, the map is almost useless, as the distinction it was specially created for is lost. All it offers now is - what? Which are those among the Jewish-owned plots in the wider area which were useful for building the water conveying system for the power plant? Very thin. Is there a way to get a colour copy? Cheers, Arminden (talk) 00:00, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Arminden: you are 100% right. I have never seen a color copy unfortunately, and do not know how we would be able to get hold of one. Onceinawhile (talk) 03:16, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Onceinawhile, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Memorandum to Protestant Monarchs of Europe

[edit]

In August 2013 you uploaded Memorandum to Protestant Monarchs of Europe https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memorandum_to_Protestant_Monarchs_of_Europe_for_the_restoration_of_the_Jews_to_Palestine,_Colonial_Times_1841.jpg (actually Memorandum to the Protestant Powers of the North of Europe and America) copied by Colonial Times from The [London] Times. Is it possible for an image of it's appearance there to be uploaded or at least its date and page to be mentioned?

According to the note preceding the memorandum's text it had "just appeared in a periodical entitled Memorials concerning God's Ancient People of Israel. Is it known in which issue of the periodical the memorandum originally appeared? Mcljlm (talk) 03:28, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mcljlm: Zero0000 uploaded the original Times version in this image.
Regarding the original periodical, see the discussion at w:Talk:Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury#Letter in the Times.
Onceinawhile (talk) 21:30, 16 November 2022
@Onceinawhile: Thanks to that mention I've now been able to read the Times version. I now wonder why you didn't delete the Colonial Times version. If not deleted it would be useful to add a note making clear it was republished from The Times - least one author has mentioned Colonial Times as if that's where it first appeared - and change the file's title to Restoration of the Jews (perhaps in upper case as in The Times). Mcljlm (talk) 03:13, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I don’t mind if you want to change it - I left it because I think the Colonial Times image looks better as it is on the front page and not cropped. Onceinawhile (talk) 23:55, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Colorization

[edit]

Hello Onceinawhile,

I hope that Commons has notifications, but in case you missed it, I reverted your colorized version of File:CairoConference1921.jpg. That said, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be on Commons - you should definitely feel free to re-upload it as a derivative image, just I figured it'd be better if you did it yourself rather than me doing it and obscuring whose work it was. It's only an essay, but Commons:Colorization does suggest that colorization is drastic enough to be better as a separate upload rather than a replacement. (And this would apply for any other colorization efforts as well, of course.) SnowFire (talk) 20:52, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Palestine Grid

[edit]

Some years ago, you uploaded File:Survey of Palestine 1942-1958 1-100,000 sheet index.png, a georeferenced map that uses that odd palestine grid. Now I try to open the map in QGIS, and the image that appears very small somewhere in the Sinai peninsula if load it into a EPSG:7142, or far larger than the world map if I do in WGS84. The same happens to File:Palestine, Index to Villages & settlements, 1-250,000.jpg, not uploaded by you, but also georeferenced and palestine grid. Do you have an idea what is the problem? It is likely a settings issue in QGIS; but I am not very skilled with the more advanced functions.--Antemister (talk) 21:56, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DutchTreat: could you help with this? It was your (excellent) work, and I don’t have the expertise to answer the question unfortunately. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:36, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Antemister: Please tell me more about the steps you followed to get a georeferenced version of the first file "SoP 1942 index". I tried the following steps: Click on the button https://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/4406 "View the georeferenced map in the Wikimaps Warper"] for the files in Commons. Go to the "Export" tab in warper. Select one of the image types like "Download rectified GeoTIFF". When I load this TIFF as raster layer into QGIS, the map is distorted in the WGS84 CRS. Explaining the reasons for this distortion will require some deeper discussions. Wanted to give you these quick points in case they help you. I might not understand the nuances of your question. Please me understand your goal and the steps you are following to move forward. Ping me on this page with your response. DutchTreat (talk) 23:21, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I did just download the file and opened it as a raster layer in QGIS, assuming that it is already a GeoTIFF file. Now I did as you described it, downloading "rectified GeoTIFF", and I got the map on the correct position, very distorted as described. But actually I am interested in File:Palestine, Index to Villages & settlements, 1-250,000.jpg (for extracting the exact boundaries of Corpus separatum (Jerusalem)). So I downloaded the map, started to georeference it, using EPSG:7142, but it results in the image located in the Sinai. So the file itself seems to be georeferenced correctly, and the problem is my QGIS project. So I asked you primarily because you have already georeferenced such palestine grid map, and you might know where I made the mistake.--Antemister (talk) 10:49, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Antemister: Make sure in QGIS you enter (x, y) coordinates with X=longitude and Y=latitude. Since in this part of the world the numbers are close to the same range, it's easy to incorrectly put the latitude first. If I think of anything else, I'll respond later. Best of luck. That is an interesting map for further study. DutchTreat (talk) 17:40, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
longitude/latitude is correct, now added manually points with these coordinates, they are also in the Sinai. Which EPSG did you you when you georeferenced that file?--Antemister (talk) 18:16, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Antemister: Used EPS:28191 - Palestine 1923. From my notes, the transform type: "Thin Plate Spline" with resample : "nearest neighbor". DutchTreat (talk) 21:56, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Antemister: Good news! I reproduced your issue and found the answer. Enter the grid coordinate values multiplied by 1000. The CRS EPSG:7142 is using meters, not kilometers. Thus (100,200) on the map becomes 100000, 200000 as input to the georeferencer. See conversion to in EPSG:4326 WGS84 degrees. Instead of QGIS, I find this method easier. I used Wikimedia Warper "6259" to create an online version. Feel free to download either the GeoTIFF (51 MB) or the PNG (199 MB)+XML. Let me know your thoughts. Thank you, tried it also by myself, it worked now!--Antemister (talk) 21:43, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DutchTreat: , again an issue with that map, needed the map again for another porpose again, downloaded it from https://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/4406#Preview_tab, and saw that it is distorted. in QGIS the same way as in the preview. Likely a minor error, can yoou check that?--Antemister (talk) 06:27, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Warper automatically assigns the CRS as WGS 84. Thus the exported file uses that same CRS. Let me see if there is a better alternative. DutchTreat (talk) 16:31, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I use WGS84 but the image es as distorted in QGIS as the preview. Is that an problem of the conversion from Palestine Grid to WGS84?--Antemister (talk) 16:55, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Antemister: Added more control points in the Warper. Still using Rectify Method: Thin Plane Spline, but changed to use Resampling Method: Cubic Spline. Results are looking better. Please export the file again and see if you are getting the results you would expect. Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. DutchTreat (talk) 21:05, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DutchTreat: , yes, now the georeferenciation is correct as far as I can judge it in the low resolution (the large distortions are gone). Is it possible that you update full resolution 400 MB image? (want to draw the then-shoreline of the dead sea)--Antemister (talk) 21:58, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Antemister: For detail work like you are describing, I recommend using the scans directly, not the index. I warped the three sheets of interest related to the Dead Sea: 10 Jerusalem 6884; * 13 Dead Sea 6885 and 16 JebelUsdum 6886. Give these a try. They would import as three layers in GIS which can be merged. DutchTreat (talk) 11:23, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, cool!--Antemister (talk) 21:57, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just made a few minor tweaks that improve the alignment. If you have already downloaded the three sheets, please get a fresh copy. They are still not perfectly aligned, so more control points are needed. DutchTreat (talk) 11:43, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
