Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

- @Tiven2240: It appears the source of uploaded file has been moved or deleted, which is unfortunately common for government run websites. Listing few news reports that feature the image with source accreditation. Could Archive.org copy of source be used as a valid source here?

K Sivan's image
[edit]Hey Ohsin. So I created a cropped version of the original image of Dr. K Sivan as we discussed here. And I have marked the file you uploaded as a duplicate of the original file, since the main source of the image was pib press release. Is that alright? —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 18:59, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- It is fine but there is no difference between calling a GoI image, PIB sourced or ISRO sourced as I understand it. Ohsin (talk) 19:02, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Please see my reply on discussion for deletion request. —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 19:12, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Some good news
[edit]Commons had managed to get OTRS permission from Indian Navy (OTRS ticket #2013090610005872, see this)!! There is no reason why they cannot get permission from ISRO.— Vaibhavafro 💬 15:58, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Vaibhavafro: Thanks for that! Very encouraging result, I need to look into how OTRS works and how to initiate it. For ISRO this Navy example could even be cited in the communication process to persuade them. Ohsin (talk) 13:20, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
- Welcome. I am also very exited. If a military organisation can talk to Commons, why not a civilian one?! Cheers! — Vaibhavafro 💬 13:29, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Comment@Ohsin: I think it won’t be too easy. You will have to shoot-off mails to ISRO requesting permission. If you get a reply, that will be stored as an OTRS. However, you can still cite the Navy-example to persuade them. Regards,— Vaibhavafro 💬 04:49, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
thanks for your comment
[edit]I will revert the delete JarrahTree (talk) 10:11, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you. Ohsin (talk) 10:15, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- no problems JarrahTree (talk) 10:16, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: Community translated captions are still missing after revert but perhaps other uploader will be willing to copy-paste them from file history to the alternate file. Ohsin (talk) 10:54, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- no problems JarrahTree (talk) 10:16, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 05:02, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
- Many thanks, these features like uploading from URL and batch uploads would be very handy. Ohsin (talk) 00:27, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

- @Victuallers: Apologies for that, it was due to setting of previous upload from Vicuna. Ohsin (talk) 16:04, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thats OK - it was a bit harsh so thx for taking it in good spirit Victuallers (talk) 16:38, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Duplicate HSTDV file (deletion request)
[edit]I see you have uploaded the above file in webm format. I have uploaded a duplicate version of the above file in a different video format - ogg.
Can you please request a speedy deletion of the webm file? Ogg is usually better than webm because the latter doesn't run on Apple devices.— Vaibhavafro 💬 19:51, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- As far as I know the file should get transcoded into compatible formats for different devices. Ohsin (talk) 23:35, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- No, the file doesn’t get transcoded on iPhone; I have personally never seen it get transcoded on iPhone. Still, I have requested speedy deletion of my file because I don’t want to force you to delete yours due to such a small issue. Please try to prefer ogg/ogv format the next time when you upload a file. Regards,— Vaibhavafro 💬 07:54, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!
[edit]Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
