categories

[edit]

Please, consider removing categories which get redundant if you add a new one. For instance, "Breads" has to be removed while adding "Breads of Russia". - A.Savin 18:03, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

...And again: [1] For your interest, "sweet food" is a "food", and "food" is (also) a "product"... So, Category:Sweet food of Russia suffices completely... You'll never understand, heh? - A.Savin 23:34, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, someone has put some foreign milk packs into the Food of Russia category. Apparently, they mean not only the food produced in Russia, but also commonly consumed in Russia. Hence it is not always true that everything in a subcategory also matches the parent category. Another example: in the category Cabbage Rolls there are a few images of Golubzy and a few others of german rolls. The category belongs to Cuisines of Russia, Germany etc. So in some cases it may useful for clarity to add some picture also to the parent category.

Another reason to keep certain pictures in several categories is that the most of the categories don't have their 'front page' demonstrating the nicest images. Only most basic and popular categories have such pages. Therefore I think it is sometimes useful to include one (the nicest) picture of each subcategory into the parent category such that a user looking at the parent category immediately recognizes what she should expect in the subcategories. Off-shell (talk) 23:47, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's what galleries are for. Categories are just unsorted folders of media by the same topic, that's all. Consider to read Commons:Categories, especially about over-categorization. - A.Savin 23:56, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 20:48, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Grilled food

[edit]

[2]: how can this be? Roasting is done in an oven; grilling on, well, a grill! Am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 15:58, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to w:Roasting, "Roasting is a cooking method that uses dry heat, whether an open flame, oven, or other heat source." Apparently based on this, Category:Grills is included in Category:Ovens, and Category:Grilled chicken is included in Category:Roasted chicken. Following this logic, I suppose that grilled food is a kind of roasted food. On the other hand, Category:Roasted pig is included into Category:Grilled pork, so that these terms seem to be interchangeable in certain context. If you have a clear idea, how to separate all these categories, it would be good to do it in a coherent way. Off-shell (talk) 18:06, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Certainly the pig thing you mention is simply wrong: there is no grill at all involved in roasting a pig on a spit. Yes, I guess one can roast over (for example) an open fire with no oven. I wouldn't normally think of grilling as a subset of roasting, but I'm not interested in fighting over it. The other way around is just wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 15:47, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. So far I didn't see strict rules on the creation of categories. It seems to me the difference between Category:Octopus (food) and Category:Octopus-based food is that the former includes pictures where an octopus is served alone, while the latter shows combined dishes where it is part of a salad or served with a side dish etc. When some objects get sorted by country, one often creates a subcategory called "something by country", e.g. Category:Seafood dishes by country. If you create something like Category:Octopus dishes by country, it can also be included in Category:Seafood dishes by country, similar to Category:Fish dishes by country, Category:Crab dishes by country etc. --Off-shell (talk) 20:14, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Patlıcan kebab, a preparation that makes people who hate eggplants begin to love the thing.

Hi there. Could you have a look at the cat Heads and around and help a little to organize things better in the offal/awful area? While we have a specific cat for pork, mutton dishes go together with dog heads and things like that. Of course if other people eat dog meat while I don't, I have no right to say them anything; but I would prefer my sheep head(s) to be categorized a little better... Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 13:08, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Food preparation in <country> categories

[edit]

The use of "in" in these category names means that the images need to have been taken in the named country. We don't take a picture of preparing Chinese food in Australia and call it food preparation in China. If anything, the images in these categories could be individually in the food prep by country categories, but the categories as a whole cannot.

Category:Borscht cooking, Category:Pierogi making: this means cooking of borscht anywhere that it is cooked, so that category can't go into a country-specific category. Individual files can, but not the entire category. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:24, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I already thought of such things before. The point is that the whole concept of categories has its limitations. If applied consistently it demands a very fine granularity where at the end almost every image needs its own separate subcategory. However, categories are needed to help finding a good image among similar ones. E.g. Pirogi making is absolutely identical in Russia and Ukraine. Having images sorted by country would mean that someone looking for this process has to browse through several subcategories. Many people have no time for that and choose the first image they find, although there are better candidates. So far the idea was to keep granularity more or less dependent on the real number of images, even at the cost of a certain inconsistency. --Off-shell (talk) 07:07, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It could go in "Food of" categories. The "of" categories don't have the requirement that the image be taken in the named country. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:15, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"Food of ..." categories were so far used for basic (mostly industrial) food products, in contrast to "Cuisine of ..." One would then need a category like "Preparation of dishes of Russian cuisine" or something similar.
A side remark: if you remove "Food preparation in ...", please do not add "Cuisine of ..." instead, where it produces overcategorisation. E.g. Category:Borscht cooking is in Category:Borscht which is in categories "Soups of ..." which are in turn in "Cuisine of ...". --Off-shell (talk) 07:23, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi The Supermind. He is the owner of the image but not of the depicted object. The sculpture is an artwork which is subject to copyright by itself. See Ukraine#Freedom_of_panorama. The author of the sculpture died 2010, so it will go into public domain in 2081. Nevruz

[edit]

Hi. You added Category:New year celebrations in Turkey to Category:Nowruz in Turkey; however, you did not add Category:New Year celebrations in China to Category:Nowruz in China, nor did you add Category:New Year celebrations in the United States to Category:Nowruz in the United States. (I did not look at the other similar national cats.) Would you like to do something in order not to create a difference between these countries? Cheers. --E4024 (talk) 12:26, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The name "New Year celebration in ..." is ambiguous. It may mean only the celebration on December 31 according to the Gregorian calendar which is the international standard today, or the celebration based on the local tradition. I have no particular preference on this issue. --Off-shell (talk) 09:46, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply and for the file moves. I will take Turkish Nevruz out of the New Year cat. Nobody sees Nevruz like that in Turkey. It is the rebirth of nature with spring. ("Yılbaşı" means "capo d'anno".) Happy New Year to you! --E4024 (talk) 09:26, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Any particular reason Category:Plăcintă is a sub-cat of Category:Apple pies? I suppose a plăcintă can be apple, but cheese is a lot more common, no? - Jmabel ! talk 00:02, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jmabel. According to en:Plăcintă, "Plăcintă is a Romanian, Moldovan and Ukrainian traditional pastry resembling a thin, small round or square-shaped cake, usually filled with apples or a soft cheese...". If apples are wrongly stressed as a common filling, then it should be corrected everywhere. --Off-shell (talk) 17:58, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience, the apple variant (plăcintă cu mere) is more or less a seasonal dish in the autumn when the apples come in; you also see plăcintă cu dovleac, the Romanian equivalent of pumpkin pie. The cheese variant (plăcintă cu brânză) is usually something close to a feta, either sweetened or salted, and is year-round. & Plăcintă varies in style, almost anywhere between a pie and a strudel. Meat variants also exist, though as a vegetarian I don't know my way around those.
I don't know quite how to get citable sources for that. For what it's worth, there's an originally Moldovan-based restaurant chain, now mostly in Romania, called "La Plăcinte" that has a crazy number of variants: here's their English-language menu: https://laplacinte.ro/en/. - Jmabel ! talk 18:13, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You can change the categorisation, as you see fit. Currently there seem to be no pictures with apple filling at all. But of course they may appear in the future. In general, I find the whole concept of categories somewhat impracticable. Strictly speaking, one would need subcategories for every possible filling (i.e. "Plăcintă with apples", "Plăcintă with cheese" etc.) and then assign "Plăcintă with apples" to "Apple pies". --Off-shell (talk) 23:14, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I will remove the "apple" parent. As to your last: you could do it that way, or could just use both Category:Plăcintă and Category:Apple pies. Not every pair of categories that both apply to some photo need an intersection category. - 03:53, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Dairy beverages has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
