Small images uploads

Hello Ning-ning,

when copying images from geograph.org.uk like e.g. Image:119430 c5afcb18-by-Michael-Patterson.jpg could you please make sure

• that you upload the file in its original (bigger) size,
• that you change the destination filename to something more meaningful (e.g. Footpath_to_Whitwell_2006.jpg)

before you click "upload file"?

Hi Bdk. I've uploaded a file with changed file name and original size as per your recommendations. I use the uploaded files for infobox images, where the width should be 240-250 pixels. Due to the low quality of many of the Geograph images I modify them to remove foreground, straighten horizon, correct the perspective etc. I also add sky where the original has burnt out to white, using Photoshop cloud filter, I clone out TV masts and telephone wires where possible. The file I uploaded today has not been modified substantially (because on this system I am reduced to using Gimp!) but it has been cropped to remove foreground. Hence the size it has been uploaded at is not the original size, but I've not reduced it either.

Your request suggests to me that you have other uses in mind for these images. I'm unsure whether you intend use of the original Geograph images or my edited versions. Ning-ning 09:21, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the explanation, and for the improved filenames, of course :-) Well, the Geograph images are generally rather small, no question. But why did you choose to resize the Cratley image? I can't note any differences here to the bigger original image, only that it is – unnecessarily – much smaller. Anyway, in cases where you've edited an original file (e.g. cropped it), could you note this in its description please? Something like "slightly reworked" next to the source URL would be sufficient (that should prevent others from asking the same questions I asked above *g*, or to upload the bigger original file over your reworked version). --:Bdk: 16:42, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Probably would be best for me to upload two versions of each file- a full-sized one and a reduced one with proper notes and explanation, and a note cross-linking the two. Anyway thanks for pointing these problems out.Ning-ning 17:43, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Yup :-) But, still … please don't take the following as an offense, it's definitely not meant as one, I only hesitated to ask this before because you seem to be an experienced editor: Why don't you simply use the [[Image:Foo.jpg|250px|Caption]] syntax to resize images for infoboxes? I mean, you wouldn't have to spend your time on manual resizing and double uploads, and others could easily use these images in whatever size they want then ;-) --:Bdk: 20:39, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Derbyshire images

I actually thought that commons delinker took care of files which got renamed. I'll have to look into that. There are quite a few files I set to rename on commons, but aside from Nottingham Uni & Donington Park images, I don't think I've transwikied any images from that area. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Editing other images does not make it own work

You edited File:Whitby_Abbey_01.jpg and uploaded it here File:Whitby Abbey Wilfrid.jpg as own work and licensed it as PD (I found out via this image en:File:Whitby Abbey Wilfred.jpg). You can't do that. If you edit an image licensed {{Cc-by-2.0}} you must keep same license and mention photographer. Always leave a link to the image you edited. Then others can see it is an edited version and can help you fix it if you forgot something.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
